Alright, I will submit Skerrin Maltisse, CG Elven Witch (with Elizabeth, his Lyrakien familiar) for consideration :-)

(Build and background in profile, to be clear!)

I would like to submit Skerrin for consideration to fill the 'trapper' role.

Please note that I intend to take spell blending (Aram Zey's Focus) in order to be able to deal with *magical* traps, but for the moment, he is perfectly capable of dealing with mundane ones :-)

Luke_Parry here, with my submission.

EDIT: Huh. Never mind then :-/

For the record, I was directed here by a different 'recruitment thread' post by GM_Wasted, but I see that is now defunct. Oh well!

I would like to submit Skerrin Maltisse, a LN Elven Wizard(Conjuror) for consideration :-)

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Skerrin lines-up another shot at one of the Goblins, and let's the foul creature have it!

Acid Splash (Ranged Touch): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10, for 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 Acid damage.

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16.

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

I won't hold it against you :-P

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Skerrin frowns, and throws a small blob of acid at one of the goblins.

Acid Splash (Ranged Touch): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12, for 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 Acid damage.

Hopefully, they are flat-footed ;-)

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Excellent :-)

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Skerrin directs his eagle to attack one of the goblins!

Talon: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9, for 1d4 ⇒ 4 S/B damage.
Talon: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8, for 1d4 ⇒ 4 S/B damage.
Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4, for 1d4 ⇒ 2 P/S/B damage.

He then cooly attempts to shoot one of them with a glob of acid, his hand drifting to the acid flask he keeps in his belt pouch...

Acid Splash(Ranged Touch): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14, for 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 Acid damage.

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13.

A chill goes up Skerrin's spine.

Goblins? Here?

Initiative: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23.

Surprise Round:

Uses Shift to teleport 5' closer to the goblins, and then starts casting Summon Monster I.

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

*waits with baited breath* ;-) :-P

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Shaking his head in bemusement, Skerrin heads off in search of Cyrdak.

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Skerrin ponders what the next clue might mean.

Is it referring to Cyrdak? I did not know he was that way inclined...

Knowledge(Local): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21.

Currently leaning towards the proprieter of the theatre, but I feel guilty sterotyping actors as gay, merely on a hunch ;-)

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Skerrin heads over to the Carnival, to look for Ameiko...

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Skerrin nods his thanks to the Sheriff, and heads straight for the Rusty Dragon Inn, to look for Ameiko.

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Having had a bit of time to think, Skerrin decides to go looking for Sheriff Hemlock.

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Lost in thought, Skerrin's drifting eventually takes him to the Skeeball game booth.

Why not? Let's see if my hand-eye coordination is what it used to be...

=230 total (money back)

Although he stumbles a bit at the first game, he eventually gets into a rhythm, and finds that he is quite enjoying himself... although he is never able to attain that 1gp prize!

Well, that was diverting... I wonder what else there is around here?

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

I was waiting to see if another hint was forthcoming ;-)

Either that, or Skerrin was going to wander around bemused for a bit, before finding something else to catch his eye :-P

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Knowledge(Local): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18.

Skerrin's features wrinkle in benign amusement.

I knew that I should have spent some time researching the town, first...

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Skerrin nods gravely.

"Of course."

He then hands over the required registration fee, and with a flourish, signs his name.

Skerrin then bows, and returns to circulating through the fair-ground. Smiling as he passes the various game booths, he is eventually drawn to the large scrum of people surrounding the scavenger hunt booth.

This could prove diverting...

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

I listed that in the recruitment thread :-)

For your convenience, I will reproduce my answers to all of your questions here:

A character goal:
To learn more about the Thassilonian Empire, through the analysis of the ruins scattered throughout Varisia, and a retrospective study of the culture of the indigenous human population.

One paragraph describing what your character looks like, how they carry themselves.
Skerrin is an elderly Elf, with a mane of fine silvery hair, and a tanned, weather-lined face. He generally dresses in a sturdy explorer’s outfit, dyed green with designs picked-out in silver thread. He typically has a journal and quill in hand, ready to make note of anything interesting which catches his eye.

One paragraph describing you character's personality.
Although he can be quite distracted at times, going off onto tangents about esoteric subjects, he is quick to smile, and is filled with boundless energy – although his strength is failing, he is still as spry as ever! Skerrin does not tend to bear grduges; he does not see the point, when he will continue to live for centuries, of allowing disagreements to fester. He can, however, be a staunch ally.

We'll start the game in Magnimar, as you are heading to Sandpoint. Give me a reason why your character is heading to Sandpoint.
Taking a look at a map of the Gulf of Varisia, Skerrin decided that the best way to approach the hinterland of Varisia would be to catch the regular 'ferry' from Magnimar to Sandpoint.

Just for fun, tell me your character's favorite food and drink.
Pheasant with a lemon and pepper sauce, accompanied by elderberry wine.

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Skerrin is carrying *exactly* a light load :-P

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Leaving spell slots open allows for utility.

As per the Core Rule Book, if a Wizard leaves (a) slot(s) open, he can take 15 minutes to prepare spell(s) later in the day.

This way, if there is a first level spell that I decide I really need, and we have some preparation time, I can do so :-)

I had not picked a familiar yet. I will do so.

Having two component pouches is a hold-over from previous campaigns - so that if someone sunders my component pouch, or steals it, I have a back-up :-)

The *Scribed Spells refers to the cantrips that Skerrin had to scribe - as a specialist, he does not get cantrips from his 'opposition schools' in his starting spellbook, but I am a completist, so I had him pay for them :-)

I will deal with carrying capacity shortly, although I am fairly certain I stayed under a light load...

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

I hope you don't mind me posting in this thread, but rather than simply dotting, I thought it would be nice to do a 'proper' post :-)

An elderly Elf, with a mane of fine silvery hair, and a tanned, weather-lined face, dressed in a simple green robe covered with Thassilonian runes picked-out in silver thread, drifts through the crowd, taking in the sights and sounds.

Ah, I had almost forgotten the frenetic pace of life amongst the humans. They are full of such energy - rushing around, accomplishing much in that brief moment of time they grace this world. Yet, despite the brevity of their existence, they are so alive! It is good to be back...

When he hears the gentleman spruiking for people to participate in the talent show, he cannot help but smile.

Well, that could be diverting...

He patiently waits his turn in line, and then announces himself.

"I am Skerrin Maltisse, lately of Kyonin. I can perform simple magical tricks to delight the young, and young at heart. What I can do may be surprising, but I guarantee that it is perfectly safe."

Basically, Prestiditation, with maybe a celestial eagle summoned for the grand finale.

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Skerrin Maltisse, reporting for duty :-)

No worries, Goblins; I figured that it was not deliberate ;-)

? I have submitted Skerrin Maltisse...?

I would like to present Skerrin, a LN Elven Wizard(Conjuror) for consideration :-)

Just for fun, tell me your character's favorite food and drink.

Pheasant with a lemon and pepper sauce, accompanied by elderberry wine.

Detailed Background:
Originally from Kyonin, Skerrin moved to Korvosa almost two hundred years ago, when his master was made the Kyonin cultural attaché to Korvosa. As a means of furthering better magical relations between the Korvosan Acadamae and the mages of Kyonin, his master deemed that it was politically expedient for him to send his apprentice to take classes at the Acadamae.

Skerrin found that the majority of the humans were aloof, but he kept his head-down, and despite the fact that he had no particular skill at Conjuration, eventually took the Test of Summoning.

Having ensured that his token ‘olive branch’ of intercollegiate goodwill had succeeded, Skerrin’s master turned his attention away from the Acadamae, and focused on his ‘cultural’ portfolio with great zeal – in fact, he became quite notorious for his interest in the young women of Korvosa, much to the chagrin of more than one noble house or merchant family.

However, such scandalous activities were simply a cover for his actual purpose in the city – using a combination of magic and money, he maintained a web of informants that specialised in knowing anything and everything about the city.

Invariably, Skerrin was in the thick of whatever long game his master was running. Things continued in this fashion for close to a century, before someone managed to unravel the carefully constructed web, and attempted to finger the puppet-master – Skerrin took the fall for his master, and was ultimately expelled from the city for spying.

He returned back to Kyonin, and lived a life of quite mediocrity, pouring over ancient books, and developing a reputation as a respectable sage. However, in his later years, he was seized by wanderlust – he remembered the fierce excitements and the rush of adrenaline associated with adventure and discovery, and decided that he would like to experience it again before he retired.

Over the years, he had come across various scraps of information regarding the ancient Thassilonian Empire, and decided that visiting the modern nation of Varisia, to explore the ruins still in situ, as well as the gypsy culture which was inspired by the rune magic of ancient Thassilon, would be a worthy capstone to his long life... After all, what is the worst that could happen...?

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Skerrin nods.

"That seems fair..."

Skerrin is happy to seek medical attention, and then to ensconce himself in a library for the rest of the day, in preparation for The Breaching on the morrow! :-)

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Skerrin waits with interest, watching what Toff's reaction to Nadya will be...

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Skerrin cautiously moves over to where the student is, and asks:

"Why was an Abyssal construct after you?"

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Revised action (i.e. not delaying):

Frowning, when he spots how sorely wounded the others are, Skerrin concentrates, and swiftly casts a summoning spell, causing the floor underneath the spider to swell, buckle, and extrude a bulwark of stone...

Casting SM VII, to summon a greater earth elemental, which thanks to earth glide, is able to occupy the same space as the floor.

Fort Save (Summoning as a standard action): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22 Vs DC 22, to avoid fatigue.

Sweating slightly, Skerrin directs the elemental to attack the spider!

Slam #1: 1d20 + 21 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 21 + 1 = 40, for 2d10 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (7, 7) + 10 + 1 = 25 Bludgeoning damage.

Slam #2: 1d20 + 21 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 21 + 1 = 34, for 2d10 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (2, 2) + 10 + 1 = 15 Bludgeoning damage.

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Fort: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30.

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Round 2 - Reflex: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (5) + 14 = 19.

Round 3:

48/80 hp, AC 17/17/12, CMD 21, Magic Circle Against Evil.

Feeling that his companions have things well in hand, Skerrin delays, watching the fight unfold with interest.

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Round 2:

"That thing is a 'Retriever', a daemonic construct."

He then throws a Persistent Glitterdust at the beast.

DC 22 Will save, or blind for 13 rounds. If it passes the save, it needs to immediately make a second one, in order to actually save, due to the 'persistence' effect.

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Mostly, I was trying to protect Skerrin, with something that he could use to cover other people, if it became necessary.

Knowledge(Planes): 1d20 + 40 ⇒ (20) + 40 = 60.

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Surprise Round:

Action 1: Cast Magic Circle Against Evil.

Action 2: Flee ;-)

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18.

Hmmm... That does not sound good; so much for a 'quiet day'...

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Skerrin inclines his head.

"Very well. I take it that it is known that we have your blessing to explore the campus, and are officially to be considered your guests? I would not want any... misunderstandings... to spoil things."

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8.

"Well, if that is indeed the only reason, I hope that we are able to put on a sufficiently good show!"

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Skerrin inclines his head.

"Indeed. The fact that you have gathered us all together ahead of time suggests that you have some specific purpose in mind..."

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Skerrin inclines his head, cordially listening to Toff's words. After a suitable pause, he replies.

"I would be pleased to participate in the Breaching Festival this year; I remember well the furor caused when it was last won, and I can only imagine the response if someone managed to win after so long."

Nadya Dimineata wrote:
"How about you old man?"

Skerrin smiles thinly, before replying cryptically:

"I seek the righting of old wrongs."

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Grabbing his spectacles, Skerrin quickly reviews the contents of the envelope, complex emotions playing across his face.

It has been so long since I was in Korvosa, but the memory is still painfully fresh... I know that I have wanted to make some journeys, but is this excursion down memory lane really the wisest path to take? Still, it would be nice to see the city again... and to prove to those fools exactly what they were trifling with when they expelled me from the city...

He then nods to the woman.

"Give me an hour to collect my things, and put my affairs in order, and I will avail myself of the opportunity the scroll you have provides me with."

Skerrin then quickly moves about his house, collecting those things he feels will be needed for The Breaching Festival...

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

275 - I wanted him to be an 'elderly' Elf. I did not, however, apply any aging benefits/penalties, as I wanted this mainly for flavor, and did not want to 'min-max' the spellcaster too much ;-)

However, if it would make things easier, I can adjust his age/background to make him a 'young adult'.

Male Elf Witch(Beast-Bonded/Pact Witch) 6

Checking in, as requested :-)

Let me know if there is anything that you need further clarification on :-)

For the record, I have finished putting together Skerrin, and he is ready for review :-)

I would like to submit an Arcanist: Skerrin Maltisse, a Lawful Neutral Elven Conjurer (Infernal Binder) 10 / Loremaster 3.

Appearance:

Skerrin is an elderly Elf, with a mane of fine silvery hair, and a tanned, weather-lined face. He generally dresses in a sturdy explorer’s outfit, dyed green with designs picked-out in silver thread. He typically has a journal and quill in hand, ready to make note of anything interesting which catches his eye.

Although he can be quite distracted at times, going off onto tangents about esoteric subjects, he is quick to smile, and is filled with boundless energy – although his strength is failing, he is still as spry as ever!

Background:

Hearing of The Breaching, Skerrin has decided that, after his long exile, it is time to return to Korvosa, and show them what a *real* mage can do...

His crunch still needs a little tweaking, but the 'bare bones' of his concept is there :-)

@Avelia: I have no objection to that :-)

Searching through his records, he became fascinated with the cyclopean ruins and tantalizing hints of forgotten magic that littered the Varisian Gulf, and resolved to travel there. Taking a boat from Magnimar to Sandpoint, he arrived just in time for the Swallowtail Festival...
