Pathfinder Rise of the Runelords pbem seeking 1-3 replacement players

Gamer Connection

Our RotR pbem game stagnated due to lack of posting, and now we're looking for people committed to frequent posting and entertaining writing. You can take over one of the old characters (a Shoanti druid, gnome frost sorceror or halfling rogue) or make a new character that has a reason to go adventuring with the Heroes of Sandpoint.

The party is 1st level and has just defeated a goblin raid on the town of Sandpoint the day before yesterday. Now they're investigating a goblin lair, where they might find the new party member(s). 25-pt buy, no evil characters, core material only for class and race (though I'll usually accept archetypes). The current party includes an Ulfen ranger, a Shoanti monk and a cleric of Shelyn; we could use a rogue or arcane caster. I'd like to see some basic concepts here before you go to the work of statting out a character.

Our group on Yahoo Groups is rotrdk, with a link to our website on it.

Allow me to present Skerrin Maltisse, a LN Elven Wizard :-)

Appearance:

Skerrin is an elderly Elf, with a mane of fine silvery hair, and a tanned, weather-lined face. He generally dresses in a sturdy explorer’s outfit, dyed green with designs picked-out in silver thread. He typically has a journal and quill in hand, ready to make note of anything interesting which catches his eye.

Although he can be quite distracted at times, going off onto tangents about esoteric subjects, he is quick to smile, and is filled with boundless energy – although his strength is failing, he is still as spry as ever!

Background:

Originally from Kyonin, Skerrin moved to Korvosa almost two hundred years ago, when his master was made the Kyonin cultural attaché to Korvosa. As a means of furthering better magical relations between the Korvosan Acadamae and the mages of Kyonin, his master deemed that it was politically expedient for him to send his apprentice to take classes at the Acadamae.

Skerrin found that the majority of the humans were aloof, but he kept his head-down, and despite the fact that he had no particular skill at Conjuration, eventually took the Test of Summoning.

Having ensured that his token ‘olive branch’ of intercollegiate goodwill had succeeded, Skerrin’s master turned his attention away from the Acadamae, and focused on his ‘cultural’ portfolio with great zeal – in fact, he became quite notorious for his interest in the young women of Korvosa, much to the chagrin of more than one noble house or merchant family.

However, such scandalous activities were simply a cover for his actual purpose in the city – using a combination of magic and money, he maintained a web of informants that specialised in knowing anything and everything about the city.

Invariably, Skerrin was in the thick of whatever long game his master was running. Things continued in this fashion for close to a century, before someone managed to unravel the carefully constructed web, and attempted to finger the puppet-master – Skerrin took the fall for his master, and was ultimately expelled from the city for spying.

He returned back to Kyonin, and lived a life of quite mediocrity, pouring over ancient books, and developing a reputation as a respectable sage. However, in his later years, he was seized by wanderlust – he remembered the fierce excitements and the rush of adrenaline associated with adventure and discovery, and decided that he would like to experience it again before he retired.

Searching through his records, he became fascinated with the cyclopean ruins and tantalizing hints of forgotten magic that littered the Varisian Gulf, and resolved to travel there. Taking a boat from Magnimar to Sandpoint, he arrived just in time for the Swallowtail Festival...

A full stat-block is available via his profile :-)

Grand Lodge

A quick outline for now, more later...

I'd love to play as a Chelaxian Magician [Bard] who is fascinated with the workings of magic and has a childlike curiosity.

She's quite naive despite her culture and generally sees only the best in people. She has taken up worship of Nethys but has a great appreciation for most of the gods and has come to Sandpoint specifically for the Swallowtail Fesival.

What she lacks in guile she makes up for in raw enthusiasm and is eager to put her skills to work.

Looking good so far! If the characters already know each other, so much the better. I'll leave the thread open for a few days to let people have a chance to work up a concept, and I'll choose the soon-to-be-Heroes then.

Here then is Avelia Jaugaffre, the Chelaxian Magician. Skerrin, I took the liberty of writing your character into her background. They met in Magnimar and agreeing to travel together.

Her character sheet is linked to in her profile.

@Avelia: I have no objection to that :-)

Okay, you're both in. :) Please join the Yahoo group, download and fill out the .rtf character sheet under Files according to the house rules on our website, and come up with some reason Skerrin and Avelia were caught by goblins north of Sandpoint before the Swallowtail Festival. I'll have the other characters 'rescue' you from the goblin lair.

Any questions?

Going over the house rules now. I'll have my character sheet up within the next 24.

Skerrin, you still with us?

Also, there's still room for one more.

I was in a Runelords PbP that died at the exact moment your in now.
A Halfling Rogue no less.
Is there some advantage to yahoo groups vs the Paizo boards here. They just did some nice upgrades to the PbP forms creating campaign tabs amount others items.

You're already in consideration for the other Runelords game (the one with the dwarf), so I'd prefer not to put you in this one too.

Yahoo Groups allows me (and my players) to upload files and sends out emails to everyone when there's a new post, which are the main features that make me prefer them.

Looks like Skerrin dropped out. No other takers?

whatcha looking for to round out the party?

A rogue would be nice, or a full arcane type. Other than that, I'm open to suggestion.

fangess ogrefell:
this halfling lass came to riddleport -- wanting to leave behind the chelish condescending attitudes of smaller folks -- the year before looking to join ranks with the night scales. through some mishaps and misunderstanding, she is now wanted by both the night scales and gargoyles for questioning.

finding it rather complicated to explain her side of the story without exposing her spotty past, and subsequently having to take sides, she decided to fake her death and board a merchant ship bound for sandpoint as stowaway. perhaps, she hopes, her anonymity and time with erase that brief endeavors in riddleport.

sandpoint sounds quaint and small enough for a halfling to escape notice -- or even disappear -- and sizable enough, she is sure, with ample purses needing to be liberated.

brief stats:

halfling younger female varisian rogue of chaotic neutral nature, but with one toe steeped in chaotic good. however, the inclination to dab in poison use often marks her are less than good -- although she has on occasions caused severe debilitation in "deserving" targets.

(full stats available upon invitation to game.)

Fangess sounds interesting, but 2 things:

1) To get the extra campaign feat she has to actually be from Varisia - it's not fully clear if she was from Cheliax? If you don't want the extra feat, she can be from wherever.

2) She has to have some reason to have been captured by goblins outside Sandpoint prior to the Swallowtail Festival, as that's where the party would meet her. Maybe she could have been traveling with Avelia for some reason?

she is varisian; went to cheliax, but decided not for her: wanderlust.

how you'd like to fit her into the current situation would be fine with me.

an idea: she tried to steal from the goblins. they caught and tied her hands, with whatever intentions they want to keep her captive. she breaks free and runs into party. if they are currently in battle, she breaks free, delivers a sneak attack, then joins a party to fight the goblins. (sleight of hand +9; escape artist +8; stealth +12).

Do you have room for a sorcerer with some stuff from UM/APG? Specifically crossblooded archetype with the sage and umbral bloodlines. Short version, he's an illusion based traveling performer/contact juggler (the stuff David Bowey did in Labrynth, yeah, that's contact juggling).

Could have easily gotten caught by the greenies on his way to perform at the Swallowtail festival.

I'll get stats up tomarrow if you're interested.

tahl liadon wrote:

What on earth would you want to steal from goblins? *g* Other than that, I'd love to hear some more about her background.

I don't mind most archetypes, but other than that I'm trying to stick with core rules. Is it possible for you to build him with those? I'll have a look at the bloodlines on d20pfsrd.

oh, c'mon, this is 1st level pcs! we steal anything and everything -- esp. the rogues -- at less this one! (lol)

you want me to post her or rather i share with you directly somehow, more on her background?

fangess watches the two men from the shadows...:
it is purely coincidental that she happens to be here, and here she needs to remain silent and motionless. the abandoned warehouse provides ample nooks and crannies to conceal a stealthy body.

"...and you have the list of hits?" one says to the other.

"it's right here. you have the poison darts?" he hands over a folded parchment and retrieves a small metallic box in return. "you are certain these are the gargoyles' teeth?"

"i am one of the few who can authorize their use. make sure you leave the evidence, but don't make it too obvious..."

"just do your job and i'll do mine! the names on that list: they will all be there tonight. the toast will be at nine bell... that night scales venom must be mixed in just right before and no sooner. its efficacy is very brief, but the potency is fatal. that formula is exclusively night scales'. they will be implicated without a doubt."

"by the time they figure it out, we'll be... wait! what was that? did you hear that?" the two men stop dead, each drawing his weapon.

fangess curses under her breath. why now! her stomach churns again and a sharp growling sound echoes in the dead silence. should have eaten something!

the two men attempt to vacate. they charge directly into each other out of sheer bad luck, knocking each other off their feet.

fangess takes the opportunity to vacate the inopportune situation, having heard too much. she hops the boxes and exits the nearby window, clamoring up towards the rickety roof. she begins to rush across the length as quickly and quietly as possible. half way, her instincts tell her to stop; the footing doesn't feel right just about... here! before she can react, the surface gives and drops from under her feet. as she falls through, she sees a gaping hole in the ceiling, affording the a view of the starry night.

she hears a loud crash and her back feels like it has been slammed by an ogre, knocking the breath from her. fangess's vision dims and the warehouse falls deeper into darkness.

fangess comes to. how long have i been knocked out? she feels around in the darkness and her hand touches a metallic box. she instinctively grasps and shoves it in her belt pouch. she can hear voices coming from outside and flickering torch light, slowly providing low light inside the warehouse. she reviews the scene: the roof had collapsed on the two men -- from their lack of movement, she can only come to one conclusion -- killing them. fangess notices some of the darts are scattered on the floor (the box must have come undone and spilled its contents). she sees a gargoyle's tooth sticking out from the leg of one the men.

the voices outside are agitated and getting closer, their torches and sunrods illuminating a large area immediately outside. fangess can see the warehouse's interior more clearly, having already been accustomed to the darkness. she spots a small opening from wood decay. she heads for it as the warehouse door crashes open; the warehouse is lit brightly. "there! i see someone!" a voice calls out. fangess limps to the hole and squeezes herself through. "it's a halfling and she's getting away!" she turns around to gauge her distance between herself and the men. through the hole she spots one of them picking up a parchment and opening it. "she's an assassin! get her!"

fangess feels the strain on her side as she runs through the thicket, often looking back and changing her direction away from the search lights. then suddenly, she does not feel the ground beneath her. she feels her body tumbling downward, crashing through debris and rough bumps. she ends up face down, her mouth full of sand. her body is charged with adrenaline and cannot feel any pain. she looks up and sees a ship in the distance. from the voices and activities, it is about to embark.

fangesss stumbles across the beach and wades into the water on the dark side of the ship. the anchor is being hoisted. she wraps her arm around it and clings tightly. after a moment, the ship begins to float outward, away from the bay. fangess wraps herself around the anchor, finding a good seating position. she gathers herself and takes a deep breath. she looks up and hear activity aboard. she decides to wait until it calms before sneaking aboard.

her heart continues to pound against her chest. fangess feels a sharp pain in her abdomen. fearing the worse, she feels around expecting blood, but instead, a metallic box presses between her weight and the anchor. she shifts her belt pouch and releases a breath of relief. the water splashes gently below her.

Awesome, though we try to keep our writing in the past tense. There's an rtf file I use as a character sheet under Files on the group, please fill that out and upload it.

Fraust, did you mean the Wildblooded archetype? I saw your bloodlines listed under there, but maybe that was just the mutated version? In any case, I'll allow them. Go ahead and join the group and upload the rtf character sheet too.

Fraust, did we lose you, too? *sigh* Anyone else?

Wow, people here do not hang around long. Or bother to tell you when they quit. Yet another reason I prefer the auto-messaging feature of Yahoo.

Skerrin and Avelia have jumped ship. Any other arcane types out there?

not just here. it's an epidemic; it's unfortunately everywhere! (lol)

I'd be interested in trying out a CG Gnome Sorcerer with a Draconic (Copper) Bloodline. I'm not quite sure how far you've progressed from the point you were at in the campaign when you made the initial request, so if interested, let me know what kind of situation/details you need.

Sounds good. They're still investigating the goblin lair where they'll find you, so all I really need is a reason for you to have been in a position to be captured by goblins before the Swallowtail Festival.

Go ahead and sign up at the group; there's a website linked on it that has our character creation rules, and on the group itself is a rtf character sheet I'd like you to fill out and upload.

Oh, and if you're from Sandpoint, I'll allow the Shadows Under Sandpoint campaign traits, as well.

I was thinking something along the lines of heading alone to the Festival from his home in Sanos forest; traveling alone would leave the character susceptible to capture from a group of goblins.

I've signed up at the group and I'm building the character out currently according to the rules on the website, so I should be able to fill out and upload the character sheet without much delay once I can access it, but I do have one question: Based upon the race/class/skills/feats/traits being limited to the Core, I had assumed you wished for spells to be limited to there as well. Am I correct in this assumption, or are you open to spells from other sources (APG/UM/UC)?

If the spell is from Paizo and accessible at d20pfsrd, I'll probably allow it, but I'd like to check it out first.

I didn't see that it was off-site until after I hit send, and got interupted in real life before I could go back and edit. Sorry about not coming back and explaining myself until now. If the game was on the Paizo boards, I would have been down, but I don't have the time or energy to look into other avenues. Hope you find some people.

I've uploaded the character sheet as requested. Let me know if there's anything else I can provide/you need me to change.

Fraust: Okay, that's too bad. Thanks for coming back and explaining.

I'll check the sheet asap and get back to you. Love the name, though. *g*

ElRojoGrande, your sheet looks fine to me. I'll introduce you in the next post. Welcome to the game!

I know it's kind of a tall order, but do you have a picture of Nacklewocket to put on the website?

Rotolutundro wrote:

it maybe for the gnome.

Yeah, that is somewhat of a tall order. :P

I took a quick perusal through Google images and didn't find anything relevant, but if you give me a couple days I should be able to get a worthwhile sketch together.
As soon as I get something together I'll upload it to the character portraits folder on Yahoo.

this one too old?

this one's gnome-ish

... so's this one

this one may work?

...and these aren't bad...

my favorite -- rogue-ish, but i can 'shop it to look sorcerer-y

ultimately, you might just want a head shot, right? more choices there... good luck! (...and see ya on the other side.)

Hehe.

Sounds good.
