Knocking an arrow onto her bow Pai draws and releases, taking a few steps back to keep away from the front line while remaining within 30'. And continuing her song all the while.
Ranged Attack into Melee:1d20 + 7 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 7 - 4 = 5...distracted by the improvised singing, her arrow flies off into the underbrush, never to be seen again.
Damage on hit:1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Oh Mister Lizard, come to understand.
You will soon fall if you fight this band.
"Poor creature is probably just hungry. Hurt it a bit and I bet it will run off into the jungle. No need to kill it!"
Pulling her bow off of her back, Pai begins to knock and arrow while she sings to bolster the groups efforts, singing a song that she hopes will turn out to be prophetic.
The mighty lizard hissed and growled
But we knew he meant no harm.
The hunting had been poor for a while,
And of course he could not farm.
He saw us and thought a treat,
A yummy morsel for me to eat.
But once we showed our teeth and prowess,
And caused him to fear and doubt.
Then the lizard turned to run.
And that was the end of the bout.
Simulposted...Oh, I didn't remember the breastplate...I based all of this on the character sheets on alias profile pages and did not notice the breastplate on the next line under your scalemail.
Realized after I posted there is an added perk on the chain shirt for Ashlion...His speed right now is being reduced to 30 down from 40 because of the medium armor he's wearing...so moving to the +1 chainshirt would net him 3 less ACP AND 10 more movement speed.
So maybe we let Ashlion and Tygrah wrestle for it? They seem to like doing that anyways.
I added the loot from post numbers 674 and 688 to our loot tracker. Rory already noted the sell of the brooch of shielding and the split out of that gold. We have 900 more gold to split (500 from Count Fancyman and 400 from the Sheriff). So on top of the 125 Rory mentioned everyone gets another 128 gold, 5 silver, 7 copper.
Rory has called a claim on some of the magic crossbow bolts, Pai can also use them, as can Yolar based on current equipment choices.
So unless anyone else wants to pick up a cross bow I propose rory gets the 5 requested and Pai and Yolar split the others between them (10 each).
We have a magic chain shirt (I am assuming medium since it wasn't specified) to either sell or put on someone. My guess would be that it goes to Tygrah. It would be a +2 boost to your AC with no drawback (same ACP since the chain shirt is inherently masterwork). Could help Yolar too by lowering his ACP from -4 for armor down to -1, but the actual AC would be flat. Same for Ashlion (you guys actually are wearing the same thing, how embarassing). :P My vote would be Tygrah unless someone has a more compelling arguement somewhere else.
That brings us to the potions of barkskin. Assuming minimum caster level of 3 (level 2 spells) it gives someone a +2 Natural AC bonus for 30 minutes. I think these would be best served in the hands of our frontliners, Ashlion and Tygrah...but other thoughts and opinions are welcome there as well.
Pai recounts the series of events they encountered at Fort Breakthrough, being sure to underline the evidence that Lizard folk appeared to be involved in some kind of frame job, but not diminishing the evidence that was there, either legitimately or planted, that could lead to the conclusion of the Song-O tribe's involvement. After that she proceeds to tell of their encounter with the lizard folk inside the town during the storm.
"...while searching for the sheriff during the storm we found her incapacitated by a lizard folk raiding party. One of their troop appeared to be a magic user making use of the storm to empower his spells. At first I had assumed he was responsible for bringing the storm, but in retrospect I am not as sure. He was easier to defeat than I would expect if he could summon such a powerful maelstrom. But, the fact that two such incidents have occurred so close to each other here and at Breakthrough makes me assume that the settlement will experience more lizard problems in the near future. The events feel correlated to me."
Diplomacy w/ Help from Rory:1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 9 + 2 = 27
Pai watches as her tale is recounted to see what information takes the listeners by surprise and if there is anything that should be surprising that anyone seems to already know or is upset about having been found out.
Is there a mole here? Sense Motive:1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
She also tries to remember what she can recall of Count Nesus...
I have always felt like the brooch of shielding was good early sell treasure. Magic missile is generally not so ubiquitous of a spell to make it worth while to have a 1500 gp item around to counter it. MM is more useful to players than enemies because over long periods of time (multiple encounters) the 100% accuracy wins out. In the short term monsters can often choose better spells and deal with the lower than perfect accuracy. Because of that the brooch is normally better for enemies than for players.
My vote would be Tygrah get the wand to spread out our healing ability a little bit more (I have spell slots to heal with) and we sell the brooch.
But if someone (like Rory) really wants it I won't object.
In other news, trying to get caught up on all of the posts you guys made over the weekend. Will be making a post shortly if we are at a place in the story where one makes sense for me.

I am finding the Bard spell list to be very lacking playing Core only. It is an interesting challenge, but man would I like to pick up Ear-Splitting Scream. :)
Since wounding an affected creature awakens them I am guessing that the sleeping lizard near the barricade is either dead or getting up now. Do we have an indication of which in case our melee-ers in range want to reduce that down to one option?
Slogging her way through the mud, Pai continues her song as she draws and arrow and fires upon the druid-lizard on the wall.
"Down fell the lizards, slowly one by one.
Some fell to sleep while others were quite done.
*Polyglot*
Soon they will all be dead, and then the storm will cease.
And the lizard folk will never find their true release."
Sorry I wasn't around yesterday...suddenly very busy at work so ability to goof off at my desk is a little bit more limited.
I will try to make some updates today at lunch and then again tonight after dinner. Will still be able to do once per day, but my previous ability to do more than once per day will probably be curtailed quite a bit.
Pai smiles as she sees her magic take hold of two of the lizards.
"That should knock them out for about 2 minutes...unless someone does something to wake them up. Leave them be unless you think you can finish them."
Stepping back closer to the fray, Pai begins to sing to once again bolster her companion's confidence.
"Four little lizards dancing in the rain.
One climbed up and then the lightning came.
That's when we came and killed all the lizards.
and the four little lizards won't dance again."
Please enjoy to the tune of itsy bitsy spider...I think?
Pai releases her sleep spell centering it where it will hit 2 of the three lizard footsoldiers.
I don't know if that also hits tygrah or not. Looks like an edge case, so will leave it up to gm. Will save DC 14 for creatures effected up to 4 HD, lowest HD first ties affecting closer to center first, left over HD wasted. I will hold off on my actions for this round until I know how that changes the battlefield.
I have moved Rory's token 15' due north...Northeast would have placed him diagonal to the southern most lizard folk, which did not seem tactically ideal.
Rory, if you would prefer a different position let me know and I will change it.
Can we get the sheriff's token added to the map? Yolar or I might run forward at some point in the battle and try to heal her if the opportunity presents itself.
Another bolt of lightning illuminates the room, thunder following close on its heels rattling the makeshift storm shutters and eliciting a cry from a few unsuspecting villagers.
"We can't wait anymore. Sheriff might need help."
Pai nods her gratitude to the villagers that have accepted her offer, and returns to the party and the two surviving deputies.
"Adaela had us bring everyone here and then she went out there by herself. By my count she has been gone too long. There could be more than just a troll and some water elementals out there. I say we go find her and make sure she is okay. What do you guys think?"
Pai turns to address the deputies who appear ready to go looking for their boss themselves despite the gashes and bruises already bespotting their faces. "You deputies stay here to keep the peace. These people are your responsibility. I have arranged for a few of the more muscle-y guys over there at the bar to help you out should you need it."
Pai glances at the Pearl, but shakes her head. "Such an item would not be useful in empowering my particular kind of magic or performance. At least not in the way it is intended to be used. Perhaps Yolar could make use of it?"
She looks worriedly out the door that the Sheriff left through. "I don't like it. This is not a safe storm to be venturing out in alone. If something were to happen she has no one with her to take her to safety."
She looks around at the assembled crowd whose safety they have been charged with. "Not much we can do to keep this lot safe except make sure they stay here. Rory, find some townsfolk that are a bit more brutish and can back up the deputies if need be. Maybe slip them some coin to make it worth their while. I say we give Adaela 10 minutes and if she is not back by then we go see if she needs back up."
Disappearing into the crowd, Pai begins looking for potential conscriptees - like she told Rory to do.
Search for Villagers to conscript to the militia for a day:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19.
If she finds potential candidates:
"You there, you look like someone that can swing a cudgel if the need arises. If the sheriff isn't back soon my friends and I are going to go out and make sure she is okay. That will leave the deputies a little short handed here. Would you be willing to help out if it came to that? Doing so could be beneficial to your coin pouch."
Pai puts a small stack of 5 silver pieces on the table in front of her mark.
Not having any fire or acid readily available herself, Pai repositions herself so none of her allies are between her and the troll, about 20' away. She then draws an arrow and fires while she keeps up her song.
Ranged Attack - Firing into Melee, but no cover:1d20 + 3 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 3 + 1 - 4 = 11Well that's not hitting Damage on hit:1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Unfortunately, as she fires a gust of water ladden wind blows through, causing her arrow to fly wide past its head.
Know Nature:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26"For every 5 points by which your check result exceeds the DC, you recall another piece of useful information." -- I am bringing Fire and Acid stopping the regeneration and his 10' reach in as character knowledge based on that result...I hope that is okay.
"That big green thing Tygrah is a Troll. Swords will only slow it down! It heals up real quick. We will need fire or acid to finish it off. And watch out for his arms, he can swing that club farther than you would think."
Standing at the back of the fray and knowing that her weaponry won't be of much use in the combat, Pai once again begins to sing to bolster her allies.
Hey I get a feeling,
It has some kinda healing.
Regeneration Baby,
Makes him feel so fine.
Helps relieve his mind.
You've gotta burn him with fire
or pour on the acid, otherwise things will get dire.
"Water elementals! But something is wrong with them. They look...murky? Its weird. My magic isn't going to be much help to you guys, so I will stand back here."
Pai takes a couple of steps back to be outside of the immediate range of the water elementals (trying to post up about 40' away if there is space) while pulling her bow out and beginning to knock an arrow.
As she does she also begins to sing.
Raindrops are falling on my head,
But just cause of that does not mean we will soon be dead.
Dying's not for me...
Not sure if allies can hear me over the storm, but if they can this starts my bardic performance, so everyone gets a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls.
Just realized that I still had my available pool of Bardic performance rounds wrong. I get 4+charisma(3) + 2 (level up) + 2 (favored class bonuses)...so it should be 11, not 9. I am correcting that on my profile now.
simulpost...let me edit. I keep that diplomacy for the end and roll a sense motive seperately since I already know that result.
Guess I should make a roll too then...
Diplomacy w/ Help from Rory:1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 8 + 2 = 23
Sense Motive:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
Pai gives the man a knowing look. "I get it. There are quite a few people taller than me there, chance of getting trod on is larger than I normally like. But if you stay here you are definitely not going to make it.
The storm gust blows through, causing the shutters on near by buildings to bang back and forth loudly and accentuate her point.
"Come with us and we will keep you safe from everyone else. There was a private conference room we used when talking with the Sheriff, maybe it will be available."
"Sheriff sent us. Says a storm this big is liable to wash out the whole island. She wants you to come with us back to the Stone for shelter until it all blows over."
"Okay, but Ashlion, stay near Mirya, make sure she doesn't get blown away!"
Pai braces herself as she pushes back out into the storm. The wind is strong enough that the gnome very nearly becomes the one to go flying when the door first opens. But leaning heavily into the wind she is able to push forward, heading towards the home of Amal Rashid.
For purely selfish reasons I believe Mirya is of the most value to us...the other two are currently unknown NPCs. Unless someone gives a good reason to do otherwise (is one locale on the way to the others for example?) Pai will say we should go try to find Oyin first.
After having been deputized Pai sets to work immediately, all the while wondering if a good job will mean more good coin.
She starts with a few halflings that have decided to shelter from the storm early and stake out the best table in the Stone. She recognizes one of them as the man she swiped a drink from a few days ago before her performance.(Keep the Peace).
"Listen Lads. This table is already where it needs to be and is weighted down by your ales, so it's not going to blow away. You're town might though, and then where would you get your ale going forward? Why don't you go out and put in a decent labor, and when you come back I'll buy you your next round, what do you say?"
Diplomacy:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
The men sat staring at their mugs gruffly for a few minutes while she smiled next to them, and Rory glared over her shoulder from behind. Finally with a grumble and a scraping of stools against the stone floor, they rose and left the Stone.
Having completed that task, she went to the back of the Stone, grabbing a bundle of carrots from the kitchen on the way out. Coiling up some ropes, she starts leading a donkey out into the storm. Creating a harness around the donkey's shoulders and chest, she lashes a sled to the beast and begins urging it to move water and foodstuffs across the courtyard and into the shelter. (Move Supplies - Handle Animal)
She holds the carrot out in front of the donkey as she cajoles it to trudge through the rain. "Come on Bessie. You can do it. Just a few more trips and then I will put you back in the stable with some fresh hay. What do you say?"
Handle Animal:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Having walked halfway across the yard with its third load, the beast suddenly lowers its head and refuses to move any further despite persistent encouragement.
Okay, any of the talls taking the medium sized MW silver dagger? If not it is getting sold here.
So our weapons and armor that we are selling nets us:
(70+105+105+100+184+40+50+30+310+20)/2 = 507 gp.
Split 6 ways, thats 84g and 5s per person. It will be another 161, so 26g and 8s per person if we also sell the silver dagger.
I am assuming all other weaponry not already claimed is getting sold in this...Things not commented about yet that it includes are 6 long spears and the small MW battleaxe...seeing as how neither Bavick or I are proficient with it I figured that one was safe.
Since we are at the Smithy we need to know what fit in the bag and what didn't. Also what we took with us that no one is interested in. Pai is going to hold on the the small MW Dagger unless Bavick wants it...if you want it it is def yours...
The silver mw dagger is too big for her and the small mw battleaxe she is not proficient with. So my vote is both of those get sold.
It seems like the weapons and armor from post 423 probably did not fit in the bag...yeah? Did the 6 long spears make the trip back? Is anyone keeping one of those or are we selling them?
Pai smiles a sad smile as she takes her pouch and the additional one.
"Thank you Sifreth. Oh...one other quick question. During our battles to clear Breakthrough we came across this other symbol. It is to the god Erastil I believe? Do you know who in the town would find it significant?"
After Sifreth provides an answer to that query.
"I understand, thank you again. May the Wealthy Father smile upon all of your future dealings."
As she turns to the group as they each gather their own pouch.
"I will hold on to this extra pouch for now until we are in a place where we can split it. Let us leave this kind matron to her work so that she may grieve in private."
With that she walks back out into the rain. As she walks she addresses the group. "Where to next? The construction supplies probably came from the Emporium. I Imagine that would appreciate it if we brought it back. We also have those dried jungle plants that Quinn was supposed to take to Heri. Since we are here maybe we should deliver those as well. Does anyone have anywhere specific they want to be?"
Once the party has time to themselves Pai splits out the gold from the extra pouch. That, plus the different coins we found during the adventure totals 306 gp & 6 silver, meaning that each share is 51 gp and 1 silver, ontop of the 50 gold you just received from Sifreth.
Do I get to tease Rory?:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23Nice!
As the group trudge through the rain to the temple back Pai hurries to keep up with Rory's longer legs. "Did you see Turnip at the bar? She was making eyes at you from behind her book. She wants to get together and make a salad!"
*later at the temple*
"I'm afraid everyone is shopping for something that we find ourselves in short supply of matron."
She gingerly removes the recovered holy symbol from her side pouch and places it on the counter.
"The good news I can give you is that we laid your apprentice to rest in a proper burial and she no longer had to experience the pains of this life. Our condolences"
I have gone through the posts and updated our loot sheet...We hadn't been keeping up with that very well!
There are some things that I don't know if we would have been able to fit in the bag to carry back with us. Namely the construction supplies and the large bulk of weaponry that the fort was outfited with from post#423.
Is there anything else you guys see that should not have been included as loot? Also, is there anything you want to claim? Ashlion, I have your claim on the MW breastplate noted.
While Yolar and Muhdzuzi have a side conversation, Pai addresses Sheriff Praet.
"The news we bring is only good in that you are hearing it, and will hear it in the light of truth rather than the shadow of obfuscation that it was intended to be delivered in. It is still sorrowful and painful though, so I advise you brace yourself.
Fort Breakthrough as been overrun and all hands stationed there were killed."
She proceeds to explain to the sheriff the state that they found the fort in. How the bodies of all the dead were mutilated afterwards in what appeared to be an effort to implicate Song'O halflings in the murder. Fortunately, the true culprits were not able to expertly hide their own hand in the massacre.
"...we did find a Song'O spear piercing the body of the soldier in the courtyard, but it was apparent from the disposition of the body that the weapon had been placed their after the soul had passed..."
"...After we subdued the grippli, we gave her life back to her in exchange for information. She confirmed that she saw a battleparty of Lizardfolk leaving the fort with the bodies of several dead halflings. They couldn't very well leave the dead halflings behind, it would make it even more obvious that someone else was to blame for the destruction..."
"...the killing blow had been delivered by someone taller than the deputy sitting at the desk. Far taller than a halfling..."
"...and then we found this Terbutje had been discarded in the well. Notice one of its obsidian teeth is missing, it matches this tooth that we found in the body of the slain soldier. This weapon is far too large for a halfling to wield..."
Pai sat back on her stool. A sadness crossed her face, having completed the tale of woe. "I don't know why the lizardfolk wanted you to go to war with the Song'O. But it is quite apparent that they did. Perhaps they have used similar methods on the Song'O to instigate the attack on the farm 2 weeks ago. What I can tell is that the destruction at Fort Breakthrough was not the result of a Song'O raid. There are greater dangers in the darkened waters that we swim in."
Diplomacy - Tell the story with help from Rory:1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 8 + 2 = 16 Sense Motive - How does the sheriff take the tale? Does the indication of lizardfolk surprise her?:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
*Polyglot* "I understand. Tall people put me on my backfoot sometimes too. And I am the tallest in my family! Heck, most of them can't even speak properly." Pai shoots another wry grin at Rory. His polyglot is pretty good considering he just picked it up, but it is still terrible.
*Polyglot Con't*"We do have to let the sheriff know what happened to her people though. So why don't you stay here at the edge of town and we will come get you in a couple of hours when we head out to take you home. We'll make sure the sheriff knows that the Lizardfolk would have attacked the fort with or without Song'O being there."
Pai pulls out a piece of copper wire and holds it close to her mouth as she casts a spell. Casting Message
*Messaged Polyglot*"Hide the best you can. If we can't find you when we are leaving I will call you with this. It allows us to talk back and forth over short distances. That way I can let you know it is safe to come out and join us."
