Near the end of the meal, however, he finds a chance to ask Lady Dacilane a question: "You've been such a delightful hostess this evening, madame." he says jovially "surely there is something we can do in return?" He carries his voice in such a way that his comment could be taken as friendly manner, rather than the pointed question in light of the setting that it really is.
