Do I get any kind of bonuses for Bosbain having ahold of the rope around Jal?
Reflex: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25; never mind.
Jal's boots slide a few inches towards the hole before catching on some unseen lip under the disgusting water. Luckily he keeps his feet, watching warily as the small black lake drains right out from under him.
"Well, I gotta say thats a first."
Once the water is gone, he steps forward and peeks downwards, getting a look at what awaits below.

As the water begins to swirl violently Deris leaps into the lake. The water whips hip around in fast circles until he disappears down into the hatch.
Peering down Jal sees a rung ladder leading down to a network of 6-foot-wide, arched tunnels connects double vaulted ossuary chambers. The once ornate chambers are now a patchwork of brown stone walls, faded paint, and crumbling plaster. Water seeps through the walls and collects in floor cracks and ankle-deep puddles.
Jal sees Deris peering up at him from below. You coming down or what?

Jal produces an iuon stone and tosses it to Agirran. "Yah."
Then he steps back from the hatch, getting just out of eyeline of Deris. "So he's officially a ghost. Deris. He's down there. Any of you know how to deal with that?"
Regardless, he steps up to the ladder, motions for Brother Tophor to cover him, waits for the group to ready themselves, then heads down the ladder, then into the darkness.
"Tophor, hold a light and stay a few feet behind me. Let me know what you hear. I'll sweep for traps."
Then the varisian draws his long Tian blade stalks down the hallway, taking his first right and heading towards what he hopes is the correct door.

Tophor frowns, mumbling as he activates the light of his wayfinder. “You forget what happened the last time we went marching down a dark tunnel with a bright light… I’d have gotten the jump on those kobolds, if it hadn’t been for the beacon – and some loose gravel.” he adds sheepishly.

As Tophor activates his wayfinder the group makes their way down into the tunnels to join Deris.
He smiles at Jal. This is it. He waves his arms about in the darkness.
Hehe he is no ghost. Very much alive.
With Topher's wayfinder the group makes their way to a large door. Using his strength Jal once again finds some footing against a small stone and creaks the door open.
Carved pillars in the corners of this chamber hold aloft a double-vaulted ceiling of cracked frescos. On either side of the chamber, a single step leads up into a deeply recessed area that forms an arched room of its own.
On the floor of the east recess, the perfectly preserved body of a young boy lies in a puddle and stares silently upward.
From the western recess is the sound of soft scraping and moaning. Brother Topher peers in the area to see walking corpse of a bugbear lumbering towards them. It wears only a few soiled rags, it's flesh rotting from it's bones as it stumbles forward with it's arms outstretched, carrying a Morningstar and a decayed light wooden shield.

Is Deris in combat/on the map? I have Low-Light vision, if that helps.
Deris is not on the map as it is a small map. He is quietly following behind the party.

Unsheathing a shining blade – silver crescent adorned with an array of holes across the metal – Tophor charges the shambling corpse. Narrowing his svelt form even further, he slides under the creature and rolls up into a wide stance, lashing out with the temple sword.

Disregarding Agirran's suggestion, Jal dashes forward with the group, lashing out with his own curved blade. He aims for what he hopes are the weak spots that keep its undead joint together.

EDIT: if that deals sneak attack damage, Jal will use an immediate action to make the bugbear his Studied Target (which deals an extra 2 points of damage on that attack).

Rushing into the shadows Agirran slams his axe blade into the undead bugbear. The blade tears a large swathe of rotting flesh from it's side.
Brother Tophor is able to slide right under the bugbear's legs, though his aim with the Temple Sword is a bit off as it clatters across the back end of the undead's shield.
@Jal- As far as I can read undead can be sneak attacked. So you get your studied target
Jal rushes at the bugbear and stabs his katana through it's armor. Shifting his foot Jal tears the katana free through a rib with a crack. The entire side of the bugbear fall free and hangs loosely by a patch of skin.
Mumblypeg hobbles into the shadowed room to find out what is going on as Rika fires an arrow at the bugbear. The arrow comes to rest, stuck into it's wooden shield. Kami rushes in, his talon's scrape against the undead's armor but is not able to penetrate it.

Jal and Agirran make quick work of the undead menace as their blades hack it to pieces.
Agirran checks on the lad and finds him to be deceased for quite a while now. On the tattered clothing he finds an Andoran crest. This is the body of Grishan Maldris, the younger brother of Colson Maldris (now the head of the Andoran faction in Absalom).

”Ya see there, cara,” Jal says with a smarmy wink, ”teamwork really does make the dream work.”
He kicks at the bugbear remains for a few moments, looking for anything useful.
Perception, search the bugbear body: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20
Then joins the team at the boy’s body, shaking his head at who it is. ”That aint’ gonna be easy news to deliver. I vote we make Tophor do it.”
Perception, DC15: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14 <— wow, lame.
Then he takes a circuit of the room, looking for anything else that might be interesting or useful for the team and their mission.
Perception, the room: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28
From this room, is there only the door to the south? Or is there also a door on that west side where Tophor is standing? (I can’t tell if that black-out panel is over a wall or door)
Brother Tophor
|
“Why has the body not succumb to the ravages of time? And how did that bugbear get down here? Or maybe it was here before the sinkhole gave way?” The monk muses aloud as he investigates the rest of the room, bringing his light to the heart of the chamber.
Perception: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (16) + 19 = 35
“Take care with that, Bosbain,” he warns, pointing to the discovered ring. “It could be cursed.”

"The bugbear might have been here before the flooding. The boy's body ... " he shrugs, "I have no clue. Maybe it was preserved? Maybe time is weird here?"
He looks around at the group, "Any of you schooled folks have any idea?"

Yea, they are two separate deals. I just threw that in there also since you guys found the ring. The preservation is just from the crazy necromantic magic about the place.

Once the rush of combat has passed, Rika goes about the room, nervously, before asking "What we do now?"
Agirran the Fury

"Onward and inward. Leave the boy resting where he is until we find out how this place works." Says Agirran, perhaps more thoughtfully than most people might think him capable of.
Brother Tophor

As Tophor activates his wayfinder the group makes their way down into the tunnels to join Deris.
He smiles at Jal. This is it. He waves his arms about in the darkness.
Earlier, was Deris waving his arms about as if to get our attention, or in some mumbo-jumbo sense?
GM Tyranius
|
Get your attention.
Opening the door the group heads deeper into the necropolis.
Water drips from the double-vaulted ceiling and trickles down the walls to pool on the floor. Bone shards of a hundred skulls litter the room like shattered seashells. Wide stairs climb to the west. Narrow stairs dive to the north. On the south wall, an open doorway gapes, a carved relief depicting a massive battle filling the archway over the door. The rest of the walls are filled floor to ceiling with nooks that house ancient, but drenched, skeletal remains. In the center of the room sit twelve school children in a circle on the floor. One child seems to be silently telling a story, her arms moving rapidly as she makes scary faces.
peering around from behind you Deris' eyes grow wide with excitement. Quickly he shoves past everyone as he begins to shout. SEE! SHE IS ALIVE! I KNEW IT! He bellows as he points to the girl telling the stories. This is my daughter Cassiel!

Cool. Thanks for the clarification.

Tophor grimaces, as the others humor the madman. “This is wrong – their souls must be allowed to move on, and this man allowed to grieve. Whatever – or whoever – is responsible for this must be stopped.”
Rika Fumeyo-no-Oni

"Nothing is right in this place. The spirits of land must be very angry to let this take place." Rika opines. "But is not mission. Can be later. First is find ring and girl." she continues as she gazes intently at each of the children.
Are any of these children not ghostly figments of the past?
