I traded a couple messages with Tara. She is rather bogged down short-term between work and caring for her niece (her sister is sick). I'm going to get things started in the morning, she can join in there after. We are starting in an inn, after all. So someone can walk in at any time.....

And it seems like Google docs is the preferred method for maps/combat. I have used it some before for maps, and seems to work well enough for others. Plus you can access It just fine from a mobile device, so that is nice.

Boram with your Combat advance (and thus proficiency in all martial weapons), you could definitely do that. With the Finesse Training applying to "Light Blades", if you wanted to go with a more "swashbuckler" style, an option could be Rapier and Main Gauche (with kukri reskinned as the defensive dagger). This game is about flavor, so such a handwave perfectly fine. And, I mean, come on, you get a d4 for the rapier instead of a d3 with the kukri - that is a HUGE bonus!

Setting The Broken Broadsword will most definitely be a permanent, brick-and-mortar building in a set location... but of course, this is a world of fantasy and wonder, so anything IS possible. Given it's close proximity to both the Stolen Lands AND the mountains into Iobaria, I thought Restov would be a good choice. Alternately, we could have it be an "Inn on the Road", a traveler's waypoint outside of Restov, perhaps just on the western side of the mountain pass. Any preferences?

Spell Availability A couple more minor house rules. First, it as always irked me that nature casters (those casting with the power of 'life') have a slower progression for Cure spells. So, anyone with nature casting gains Cure spells at the same progression as other divine casters. Second, all casting classes have access to all six of the 2nd level ability score spells (bull's strength, bear's endurance, etc).

I will try to compile all the various house rules into the Campaign page.

Also, I heard back from Tara, she is supposed to dot in today.

Hey crew, great to see everyone getting excited for the game. I just got out of a very long, and rather eventful, day of work. To help me unwind, let me address some of the questions as they stand.

Boram All weapon related feats and abilities that would previously apply to a single weapon now apply to a weapon group. So yes, finesse training in the light blades would be the appropriate choice to cover daggers, short swords, rapiers, and the like.

Boram yes, confirming from earlier that hit points are indeed rolled as a half hit die plus half the die. So a d8 is now D4+4, etc.

Nisil those changes were more so intended for if you advanced your combat skill. However, the standard druid armament is based around a specific image of the druid, that often does not line up with many build concepts. If you would prefer to go with simple weapons plus one martial group (In this case Bows), I am perfectly fine with that. I think skill with ranged weapons would be very appropriate for an air based druid.

Weapon Groups ramble:

On the topic of weapon groups, at one point in time (and they don't have books in front of me, so this might date back all the way to 2nd edition combat and tactics) there were two types of weapon groups: type groups, and style groups. A weapon type group would be a cluster of weapons that are similarly made and use similar mechanics (light blades, axes, bows, ETC). Style groups were a cluster of weapons that fit a certain theme or genre, where a character might get a little bit of training with a variety of different tools that fit their purpose (rogue, druid, monk). The catch was you could gain proficiency in a style group, but any feats applying to a "group" had to be applied to a type group. I will dig through my books and notes when I get home to make sure I am going straight up to edition.

Setting I am really leaning towards the southeast corner of Brevoy, where it meets the Stolen Lands, and Ioboria stands on the other side of the mountains. It gives us lots of 'unknown' to play with. Does this work for everyone?

I just dropped Tara a message, as she hasn't dotted in yet. I noticed the last week in her game posting has slowed, likely because of the holiday. I am leaving her character choice up to her. She did propose the idea of being able to trade out characters between 'sessions'. I thought the idea might be fun, and wanted to open up to other players if they also had other characters they might want to explore. Just an idea.

Finally, I have created an avatar for the proprietor of the Broken Broadsword, Finnegan McTavish. I will likely GM from this profile, but use his when we are in the inn!

A couple quick addendums:
Favored Class Bonus is not restricted by race, so you may select bonus hit point, skill point, or a third option as you choose. Moreover, I am feeling generous, so everyone gets two per level. You cannot take anything twice in the same level, and you may also take one that applies to an ability related to your subclass.

Cleric Channel uses wisdom instead of charisma. Every other divine caster has all their abilities and casting from the same ability score (paladin and Oracle both cast and channel off charisma, Inquisitor casts and gets its powers off wisdom, and warpriest casts and channels off wisdom). The charisma dependency is a holdover from old editions, and makes a MAD character even more MAD solely for the sake of being able to heal its party.

How do people want to do combat? Do we want to use battle maps or theatre of the mind, and if maps, do we want to host on roll20, google docs, or something else? I appreciate everyone's thoughts.

I want to thank you all again for your applications, this has been one hell of a past week pouring over all your characters, your board activity, and your responses to my questions. In a perfect world, I would invite you all. But I want to give this game my best, and so I will be keeping it to one table. And given the power level of the characters, I am thinking five is the best (I went with a classic "4+1" setup). Without further ado, could the below players join me in the Discussion thread.

Robert Henry
RdKnight
Tara Ravenheart
Brainiac
SmooshieBanana

Should I decide to pull in a 6th character in the future, or have need for a replacement player, I will absolutely come back to those who submitted in the initial recruitment. Now, on with the show.

RECRUITMENT NOW CLOSED

Ladies and Gentlemen, I want to thank you all for your submissions for this game. I am looking at an amazing cast of potential characters, and will most certainly need a few days to make my considerations. During that time, I may send you PMs with questions, I appreciate your responses.

May the taps at the Broken Broadsword flow freely for you all!

Varvara The interesting part of Oracles is they are the one divine caster with clear potential for an "unknown benefactor" - so Anyone but Eiseth works, because who the Anyone is can be left as an unknown...

Pad300 I dig the Lankhmar throwback reference... now, who could be Fafhrd???

You all have about 36 hours to get things wrapped up. Let's do this!

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Good morning/afternoon ladies and gentlemen, I wanted to remind everyone that I will be closing recruitment Sunday night at 11:59 pm EST, so you have two and a half days (60 hours) to get characters wrapped up and posted. There are a lot of great submissions already, though a few are lacking certain aspects (a couple missing a background, a few others a complete build out - Pad300, Gregor the Barkeep, Hack Anslash), I encourage you to get these finished up.

In your entry, I would like to ask that you clearly list somewhere how you spent your Demi-Gestalt increases: Saving Throw (if applicable), Advance, and Boon Feats.

I want to remind people this game will have a bit of a classic-dnd throwback vibe with a few dashes of camp, and both an embracing of and some poking fun at many classic tropes.

Simeon With a secondary focus on working out the demi-gestalt system in this game, I am going to reaffirm that I am not interested in seeing Prestige Classes at this time. Sorry. I think your current proposal is sound, but if you would like to submit something different you are more than welcome to.

I had some avatar image issues a few months ago, but nothing recently. I have noticed the time stamp thing, Meraati. I think once it's been posted for more than a couple hours, its been listing the timestamp that aligns with Paizo's native time zone on the west coast (of the United States).

Pad300 Deeds give A LOT of options, but is still limited by the number of Grit/Panache a character has. As such, I am going to tentatively say 1 Boon Feat per two levels/tiers of Deeds (1 Feat for 1st & 3rd, 1 Feat for 7th & 11th, 1 Feat for 15th & 19th). This is for both Swashbuckler and Gunslinger.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Storm Dragon we will be using the Golarion standard Emerging Guns set of Firearm rules.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Storm Dragon If you take your Advance in casting, a 6-level caster would increase to a 9-level caster. So, you could play an inquisitor, magus, bard, or alchemist with a full 9-level casting progression. Bard or Inquisitor, as spontaneous casters, would use the charts for Sorcerer/Oracle; Magus and Alchemist, the charts for prepared casters like Druid/Cleric/Wizard.

You would still use your own spell list, and we would create an appropriate addition for 7th-9th level. If you had a full caster as your subclass, you could also spend boon feats to access their spell list.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Pad300 give me a few hours to revisit the swashbuckler build, figure out a better feat cost for the deeds. The level-based packages might be a good idea.

Simeon That prestige class gets +1d6 dmg per two levels to pretty much all attacks, Vital Strike, some other fluff, half its non-prestige class's advancement, and was released in the final book of the last AP of 1st edition (Swan song level power creep)...

Storm Dragon 'designating' your specialization for the purposes of access to abilities would be included in the "alternate identity" talent. However, any further benefits from the specialization (the Avenger's increase in BA or the Stalker's Sudden Strike) would have to be acquired through the already established rules.

Application rate has definitely been a little in the last few days, so I will be holding to be cut off date of the end of day on Sunday, November 21st.

Storm Dragon Oblivion and Locmore look to be correct on their interpretations. Pad300's work out likewise is doable. I am sorry your idea doesn't manifest as you'd like. The demi-gestalt system is obviously still a work in progress, and just like any alternate rule, not everything lines up perfectly. Indeed, that is often the case, especially when trying to maximize output over building to a thematic concept. I think one of the issues, unfortunately, is that Zealot and Warlock should never have been listed as Archetypes, but rather included with the base class as additional Vigilante Specializations (that's what they really are). And really, the larger problem is they tried to create a "Catch All" highly customizable class, when it should have been 4 individual "Vigilante" classes (Avenger, Stalker, Warlock, Zealot... A to Z!).

As to whether the Inquisitor is more powerful than the Zealot-Vigilante, that is debatable. It is a focused class with a single concept, built around that. The Vigilante is highly customizable (with a wealth of both social and combat talents), but customizability has always had a cost in both D&D and Pathfinder class design. To your final question, each Talent would require 1 Boon Feat (from a quick review, most are equivalent to a feat or a little more - if there is a talent that mimics an ability I have already called out as having a higher cost, then it would get that cost instead).

Pad300 hmm, Swashbuckler's Deeds hit an interesting point, similar to Bardic Music. Starting Panache is lower than rounds for BM, but also has a manner to recharge throughout the day, so that in a negligible difference. I am going to say 1 Boon Feat to gain Panache/Grit and two Deeds, 1 Boon Feat per two additional Deeds.

Today is a good day to..o The Omdura is an interesting choice, I just glanced over it and am intrigued by the Inquisitor-meets-Bard-meets-Paladin concept of it.

AdamWarnock I am morbidly intrigued by your concept with a 3 Charisma, and am curious how the 3 will manifest in your character's personality. Do also realize that puts you in a very susceptible realm for being incapacitated by Cha damage attacks.

You are all nuts, and I love it! Tara, you are welcome to submit more than one application if you so choose.

As for setting, I am leaning more and more toward Brevoy/River Kingdoms/Ioboria. As stated earlier, it will be decided with the selected group, but feels like a good, underutilized region.

And no, I will not be selecting a party of entirely raging barbarians... That would make this game Stonefall: the Beginning!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

TheWaskally You gain no casting as a Sorcerer - this is one of the majors differences between demi-gestalt and full gestalt. You have Cleric casting; having purchased a Bloodline, will be able to swap out your Bloodline spells for prepared Cleric spells just like Clerics can swap out Cure spells. In addition, having spend a Boon Feat to gain access to the Sorcerer spell list, you can also prepare Sorcerer/Wizard spells in your Cleric prepared spell slots. Now, you also have your Advance, I am not sure if you are spending that on Combat, Spellcasting, or Skills. But if you spend it on Spellcasting, you will be a stronger Cleric and have more spell slots, thus leaving you with more of a resource to share among your casting pursuits. Does that clarify?

Doing some research, it would seem that even permanent energy resistance from two different sources (like race or class) do not stack. I would be okay with you taking a refluffed version of the Tiefling alternate trait Scaled Skin, something like Blessed Skin or Angelic Skin, to handle it. Or, you are welcome to convert your duplicates to other energy types (fire, sonic).

Alright, here is the next response load:

AdamWarnock You can also get heavy armor proficiency by spending a feat on it... like normal.

Jereru Exceptional spontaneous caster would use the "Except" column for caster level, have their class's spell progression at +1 level, and your Spells Known are all increased by +1. So, at 4th level Sorcerer, you would currently have CL 5, use the 5th level spells per day (6/4), and your spells known increase by +1 (7/4/3). Make sense? And yes, you can take the generic Metamagic Master (and Magical Lineage as well).

Varvara Rdknight was correct about the number of Boon Feats you have. Interestingly though, purchasing your Mystery grants you the 1st revelation (part of the trade off for the curse), each additional revelation after that needs to be purchased separately. So you actually have one more Boon Feat to spend (either to retake Furious Focus, another revelation, or something else you want).

Rdknight Yes, you can take Sylph as a race - it's actually rather underpowered, so I might even give you a little boost if you are chosen. You don't get two classes casting, so if you select Exceptional casting, it advances whichever is your primary class (in your case druid). You can then spend Boon Feats to get access to Witch Spells that you can cast with your Druid progression. Does that make sense?

TheWaskally Boon Feats cannot be spent to gain spellcasting. With Cleric as your primary, you cast as a Cleric. You have an Advance to spend as per the Spreadsheet. You can then spend your Boon Feats to gain abilities from your subclass, in this case Sorcerer. Now, you can certainly spend your Boon Feats on general feats, this just means you get less powers from your subclass. If you wanted to embrace your Sorcerer subclass, I would recommend:
1st level Boon Feat: Bloodline
2nd level Boon Feat: Access Subclass's Spell List (lower)
4th level Boon feat: Bloodline (2nd power)
Does that all make sense?

Pad300 Hmm, Summon Monster is an interesting one. I am going to say there are two possibilities:
1) If you have purchased the Eidolon ability, it will be 1 Boon Feat per tier of spellcasting (lower, moderate, high) - so 3 over full progression.
2) If you are purchasing only Summon Monster, it will be 1 Boon Feat per two levels of the spell.
On Item Creation feats, you may spend up to 4000 gp on item creation, but it will require the requisite skill checks.

Archpaladin Zousha sorry to hear that, you still have plenty of time to come up with a concept.

Tara Ravenheart haha, I love them all, they hit "Classic Fantasy Tropes" and "Tropes Remixed" both on the head! Definitely excited to see what you decide on and write up.

Everyone, keep the questions and characters coming! I think at this point, based on the extra time necessary to use the Demi-Gestalt system, I am going to be looking at next Sunday, the 21st, as the final day of recruitment.

Well, it never hurts to cast the dice...

Rolls:

5d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 3, 2, 4) = 14 - 10
5d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 1, 1, 4) = 13 - 11
5d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 6, 1, 1) = 16 - 14
5d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 4, 1, 1) = 11 - 9
5d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 5, 3, 5) = 21 - 15
5d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 2, 4, 6) = 19 - 16
5d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 3, 3, 5) = 19 - 13

Okay, I compiled these responses across the last day and a half, so they are scattered together in a hodge-podge order.

Advances You receive the one advance at character creation, no more. You cannot spend Boon Feats to gain more Advances. This is one of the major differences between full Gestalt and Demi-Gestalt - it prevent sthe Wizard with Good BA, 3 good saves, and solid skills.

Subclass (swapping) The idea of this system is to give a boost and some extra abilities while making a thematic character (getting several multi-class abilities without the cost of multiclassing); cherry picking levels and trading in/out tends to fly in the face of that. AdamWarnock, perhaps there is an archetype you can apply to either ranger or fighter to get what you are looking for?

Prestige Classes much like swapping of subclasses above, I am highly hesitant to allow multiclassing (including Prestige classes) at this point. The system already grants a manner of multiclassing, and I am concerned further multiclassing will be primarily for about ability stacking.

Pad300 Back on Friday you listed a potential build which I did not reply to. You get to select one Advance to apply to your character for his career. So, here goes: With Fighter as your primary class you begin as a "Noncaster". By taking Wizard as your subclass, you can spend your Advance to boost your spellcasting to "Limited Caster", which is the 4th level progression chart that rangers, paladins, and bloodragers have. We would establish a basic spell list for access (probably use the bloodrager's), then you could spend Boon Feats to gain access to the wizard spell list and abilities, including arcane school and anything that may be associated with any archetypes you applied to wizard. A cleaner way to build a Fighter/Wizard might in fact be to take Magus as primary, then Fighter as your subclass and go with a Combat Advance. This would give you d10 hit die, full BA, all the proficiencies of Magus, the ability to cast in light and medium armor at 1st level, and 6th-level progression.

Trevor86 You would use the 9 level (wizard/cleric/druid) chart for casting advancement. For spell lists for a class that has advanced beyond its normal level cap, we will establish a thematic spell list for the primary class. Gaining full access to the subclass's spells will still require expenditure of a feat. So, if you Advanced an Alchemist to a 9th level caster, we would create the 7th-9th level lists to reflect the previous 6 levels. Make sense?

Almonihah Having access to four different subclasses to tap into at your whim seems like a dangerously powerful option for a player to have - I am going to have to say no. In addition, in reading into the archetype, I see that it gains the Medium's Spirit ability; my apologies, but as I am not allowing the Occult classes, I would have to rule this archetype out as well.

Rdknight Familiars are a restriction for Witches, for without them they cannot cast spells - just as a spellbook is for a Wizard, an oath is for a Paladin, or a Curse is for an Oracle. As such, you gain that automatically by taking the subclass. A Swashbuckler/DG Witch would be a tough build. If you are looking to really embrace the spellcasting, I would go Witch (9th level caster) / DG Swashbuckler, take a Combat Advance to bring you up to average BA and d8 hit die, with casting in light armor. Then spend your Boon Feats on Swashbuckler abilities. I wonder if there are any archetypes for a 6th-level caster that make them "Witchy"? Might be a good option if you want to get to good BA. As to your question about weapon proficiencies, you get what your primary class has, and if you take a Combat advance, gain what is listed in the spreadsheet.

Locmore It is the cost per Spell Level - you would pay three feats, one for lesser magic (1st - 3rd level spells), one of moderate magic (4th - 6th level spells), and one for greater magic (7th - 9th level spells). So yes, you could be a Cleric of Nethys with access to the full spectrum of arcane magic as well.

Bharaz let me read over the Shifter and the archetype a couple times and I will get back to you on the Boon Feat costs.

Robert Henry Thank you greatly for compiling the list! I do not have a preferred format, and appreciate your assistance on this front. And Robert, yes Boram as a Rogue / DG Rogue could take either a Combat or Skill advance, and would increase a second saving throw to good.

Character Themes I applaud everyone for being creative and diving into the Demi-Gestalt system. In the recruitment, you may remember every Game has associated Character Themes. This game's were "Classic Fantasy Tropes" and "Tropes Remixed". I encourage each of you to look at how your character fits into one or both of these themes. I have not gone through every character, and some still need their backgrounds completed to fill it in. Below are three examples of embracing or twisting a classic fantasy trope.
Classic Fantasy Tropes
- Boram the Burglar (the Halfling "born to be a" Burglar)
Fantasy Tropes Remixed
- Lilianne Nightshade (Human Cursed to be a Monster - reversed!)
- Warren Connery (The Peasant Hero romancing the Princess - reversed!)

For those concerned about it taking them time to build a character, or worried about mistakes and errors - this system is new to everyone, I expect there to be issues. To this point it has only been used by a small group of people, so this will also test the system, and identify any challenges or opportunities it might have. The mechanics for characers can be adjusted, I will be looking at the core of the character, and the player's PbP history, for the majority of determining who I select.

6 people marked this as a favorite.

Imagine the joy and excitement I went to bed with Thursday night, having a PbP determined by vote with 40 people participating in the processs... only to awaken to the first few posts basically trashing the process and the game that won. It honestly put me on a pretty down mood for yesterday, and I had to take some time just to consider my next step. But I came back this morning to reread them (and the 40+ other posts), and noticed a comparison of this campaign to being "vanilla"... and I laughed!

In 21st century America, we take vanilla for granted, and associate it with being simple. Yet vanilla is still one of the most expensive spices across the world. It is the unique unripened fruit of a genus of orchid from Central America, something much prized by the ancient Mayas and their successors. When the Spanish conquered the Aztecs empire in 1519, they brought both vanilla and chocolate back to the Old World, setting the flavor palettes of Europe ablaze. Out of it's natural element, the wild growing orchid was finicky and it failed to produce fruit in gardens across Europe. 300 years later, French businessmen took the plant halfway around the world to an island east of Madagascar, where a 12-year-old slave discovered a way to hand pollinate the plant to cause it to produce the fruit. Of course, that was only half the battle - the fruit would need to be grown, carefully tended to, harvested while still under ripe, allowed to cure in the sun and sweat at night for several months, dried, all before it could even be processed, most often into a paste or extract... Well, you can see the labor intensive nature of this.

It reminds me a lot of being a GM. Done well, a GM hopes to present a game much like vanilla ice cream: well liked by many, with a nuanced, dynamic flavor, that runs smooth and seems effortless, and that with bits of extra flare can become almost anything. Rarely the players think about all that goes into such a creation. If you think vanilla ice cream is bland, I challenge you to make some ice cream from scratch and don't add the vanilla (or any other flavoring agent), and see how it tastes.

Anywho, onto some commentary...

Locmore/Storm Dragon/Robert Henry - initially I really like the idea of Varisia for this game - It is supposed to be a quintessential frontier, with relatively small city states, lots of different environments, ruins of a forgotten empire, and all manner of mystery. But it is also been the setting for a fistful of adventure paths at this point, stealing much of that mystery away. Brevoy, the River Kingdoms, and Ioboria present many of the same options, but with far less in stone. In the end, the setting used will be a decision collectively made by those players selected for the game and myself.

Almonihah - sounds like an interesting thematic adjustment to the Prowler at World's End. As for your "weird things" with demi-gestalt, post them here so that I can consider them. The system grants a good deal of freedom and significant power increase already, so I trust your ideas will be a responsible exploration.

Hack Anslash I agree with your Bard vs Skald issue, its something I had always bemoaned about the hybrid class.

Robert Henry - For your subclass, you can select another class (with any legal archetypes), or up to two archetypes for your primary class (outside of any already applied to your primary class in the first step) that you can purchase abilities from with your boon feats. Background skills do not grant a +1 if it is already a class skill for you (like a trait), but rather allows you to spend Background Skill ranks on those two skills (that are otherwise 'adventuring skills').

Raqeul Cailean - you pretty much on target (for both skills and abilities). So you now have 7+int skills points and access to the various additional options listed. And for your boon feats, your first one is both "Bardic Music/Inspire Courage", and then an additional feat for "Fascinate" and "Inspire Competence" (see the notes at the bottom of the Demi Gestalt spreadsheet). This leaves you with one Boon Feat left.

ON DEMI-GESTALT okay, I started trying to answer everyone's questions separately, but perhaps putting them together into a cohesive thought might be best.

I have been blessed to game with the same evolving group for over 20 years. As a whole we enjoy creating thematic characters, committing to a concept and then working the mechanics around that. Pathfinder did a good job setting up from third edition in making single-class characters strong, but that makes multiclass options often longer behind. The hybrid classes did a decent job to address this, or may have, if your combo was one of those that received a treatment. The variant multiclass system was another attempt, and for some it is good, but it's benefits vary wildly (barbarian gets rage @ 3rd, rogue sneak attack @ 7th, and paladin smite @ 11th). And of course, costs half your feats; feats being a resource Monte Cook (one of 3rd edition's creators) identified as severely lacking (his alternate rules recommended 1/lvl) after he left WotC and created Malhavoc Press.

The idea behind the Demi Gestalt system is an attempt to find the sweet spot between Variant Multiclass and Gestalt; more impact then the former without the unbridled fury of the latter. My home group has been playing with it a bit, and enjoying it, but they are also not trying to break/game it - I would ask you all to do the same.

Spellcasting you can only get a spellcasting progression from your primary class, not from your subclass (you cannot purchase it with your boon feats). You can improve your spellcasting by spending your Advance (Step 3) on it. So if you start as a Bloodrager and have selected Oracle as your subclass, you could spend your Advance on Spellcasting. This would take you from a Limited Caster (4 level progression) to a Moderate Caster (6 level progression). You would still be a Bloodrager, but instead use the 6-level chart (like the bard). Higher level spells would need to be established, and any spells whose levels would be broken by the change would be corrected. I have also added some specific Boon Feat costs to add on features to your spellcasting at the bottom of the demi-gestalt spreadsheet.

Restrictions/Codes/Curses any limitation that your subclass has applies to you as per normal. So paladins have oaths, oracles have curses, etc.

Occult Classes I did not include these as options in the recruitment as I am unfamiliar with them. With so many pieces already in motion, I would ask that you leave them off the plate. Thank you.

I have to get to work now, but will post more later!

Well, that was an exciting end to the voting!

I am already awaiting the cry of, "I demand a recount!" I am pretty sure I have cleanly tallied, and then adjusted, any and all votes throughout this phase. And whether I use the established timeline (11:59 pm EST - which is confirmed by my countdown, and thus ends with Trawets81's post), or wait until the last post made before I wrote this (Tara Ravenheart), I come out with the same answer...

12:00 PM EST:

Absolute Final Count (3:27 am as I refresh and hit post):

Another Night at The Broken Broadsword
Character Themes: tavern regulars, classic fantasy tropes, tropes remixed
Campaign Arcs: anything is possible
The Broken Broadsword is a rundown, ramshackle tavern and flophouse that has been repaired and rebuilt so many times, a first time visitor might wonder how it even stands. Smelling constantly of stale beer and body odor, it is nevertheless the fabled watering hole of countless heroes throughout the ages. On any night you can find a rogues' gallery of characters awaiting the next bit of trouble - a hooded man stumbles out of the rain and with his dying breath drops a relic from a forgotten ruin, a demonic fiend is accidentally summoned by a drunken warlock, pirates storm in and press gang the passed out guests into a crew, the King's chamberlain sneaks in seeking volunteers to rescue a missing royal child, a pickpocket opens a seized scrollcase and discovers the legend of a mystical artefact, the praetorian city guard storm the place to arrest the entire house, or hordes of zombies come marching out of a nearby crypt seeking one of the Broadsword's guests - it all could happen on any night!

So, we begin Phase 2 of this recruitment. Reminder that Character Build rules are in the first post of this thread. I am sure I will need to answer questions about certain aspects of the Demi-Gestalt ruleset as character creation moves on. You are encouraged to use the Character Themes listed above to create your concept - so a character one might find in a fantasy tavern, potentially using a classic fantasy trope - but will it be a straight presentation, or a twist / interpretation of an old classic? This is meant to have a fun, light-hearted, nostalgic vibe - so embrace it. Let's see some characters!

With 3 hours left, we have a new frontrunner! The top five are:

The King is (un)Dead, Long Live the King - 47
Another Night at the Broken Broadsword - 43
The Felonious Few - 36
Stonefall: the Beginning - 29
Holding Out for a Hero - 26

With about 6 hours left, I want to thank you all for participating in the first leg of this recruitment. Whichever game is selected (and its getting really close), I am excited to see the characters people create for them!

Ladies and Gentlemen of the board, for those of you checking in looking for the final game selection, you likely missed my extension of the voting by one day in a previous post. With the release of settings for each potential game in one of my earlier posts, many people expressed interest in adjusting their votes. You are welcome to change your votes, and may do so through tomorrow night. At this point, with 24 hours left, here are the standings:

Another Night at The Broken Broadsword - 42
The King is (un)Dead, Long Live the King - 34
The Felonious Few / Your Last Chance - 34
Holding Out for a Hero - 27
Stonefall: the Beginning - 26
You get a Kingdom, and YOU get a Kingdom - 24
Fortune, Fame, and Honor Among Thieves - 16
Under a Twice Cursed Moon - 11

Daynen, I like the suggestion, but don't want to drag this phase of the recruitment out further by adding elimination rounds. That said, it does look like Fortune, Fame, and Honor Among Thieves and Under a Twice Cursed Moon are both pretty much out of the running. Something to consider if you are thinking about making adjustments or casting a vote during this final day of voting.

I thought you and Joska both said do the forge first, so that's why I agreed with that. Kevin r commended go down, and if the forge is just the room itself a maybe a closet or two, then that will come immediately next. No?

Smooshie, Jereru, and Mythic, I have updated your votes according to your wishes.

It seems the setting overview for each proposal may have altered people's opinions of the options. To allow consideration, I will extend the game selection phase by one day, to allow everyone a chance to alter their votes if so desired.

With just about 24 hours left, here are the current standings:

Another Night at The Broken Broadsword - 43
The King is (un)Dead, Long Live the King - 32
The Felonious Few / Your Last Chance - 30
Holding Out for a Hero - 27
You get a Kingdom, and YOU get a Kingdom - 24
Fortune, Fame, and Honor Among Thieves - 19
Stonefall: the Beginning - 17
Under a Twice Cursed Moon - 14

And as requested, here are my thoughts for where each game might take place in Golarion:

Another Night at the Broken Broadsword - this game needs a setting with lots of environmental variety, and not too much structure. A fractured nation with a smaller/weaker government, where the wilds are dangerous. Varisia, Brevoy, and the River Kingdoms all come to mind.

You Get a Kingdom, and You Get a Kingdom... And YOU Get a Kingdom! - an island far off the western coast of Avistan.... Could the ruins you are sent to inhabit possibly be a forgotten piece of ancient Azlant?

Fortune, Fame, and Honor Among Thieves - The nation of Taldor is a tainted, greedy, shadow of its once noble self. Where better then the capital of Oppara to set a game about a den of thieves?!

Holding out for a Hero - Nowhere can more heroes be found, and this their apprentices, offspring, and followers, then the center of the world - Absalom. Of course, this adventure will no doubt take them far and wide, but the Jewel of the Inner Sea will factor in their story.

Born Under a Twice Cursed Moon - the Land of Nex almost fell to magical cataclysm during the war with Geb - hell, the Mana Wastes are proof of that. Perhaps the end of the war came at the will of the ancient heroes... But their efforts are now failing.

Stonefall: the Beginning - Though a few northern lands are populated by "barbarians", the Lands of the Linnorm Kings and the mighty Ulfen who call it home I believe most accurately fit my vision for Stonefall. Mighty Norse heroes, whose rulers have literally slain a dragon single-handedly, that sounds like a people of legend...

Felonious Few - Long have the citizens of Andoran fought to cast off the reigns of Cheliax, but the devil-worshippers play by a different set of rules, making it near impossible for them to repel their former masters. Perhaps it's time for them to employ a force with looser morals to help even the odds.

King is (un)Dead, Long Live the King - There are two locations that jump out as obvious settings for the hordes of undead to have conquered - Lastwall/Ustalav (after the Whispering Tyrant escapes), or Osirion (perhaps the Pharaohs of Ascension have returned). A third option could to end the undead horror that is Geb, perhaps even with some PCs whose families have been in exile from Geb for... Oh, 5000 years?

Happy Halloween all!

Today is a Good Day... the overwhelming support for Golarion has already let me to call that game will take place there, so no need for updated Faerunian deities.

Tara Ravenheart I have been thinking a good deal about where each game could be set in Golarion, and will post that later today.

Okay, here are the current standings:

Another Night at The Broken Broadsword - 35
The Felonious Few / Your Last Chance - 27
The king is (un)Dead, Long Live the King - 27
You get a Kingdom, and YOU get a Kingdom - 22
Holding Out for a Hero - 21
Under a Twice Cursed Moon - 14
Stonefall: the Beginning - 13
Fortune, Fame, and Honor Among Thieves - 11

Remember, voting will continue through November 3rd, so you are still welcome to share your thoughts, and ask any questions!

I am not sure if anyone is interested in joining another game, but I have posted a recruitment thread Choose Your Own Adventure.

For any that saw my pre-recruitment thread a while back, this is now the game that set up. I have 8 potential games that I have proposed running (letting everyone vote right now - hence the title), and then will go into the actual recruitment after. It will be Pathfinder 1e with some significant house rules - it will feature a demi-gestalt system I have been using with my home group.

I hope to see some of you there!

Locmore I will expand on the language in my Demi-Gestalt file to clarify a few things. It is a copy of the working document I have used with my local group, so I was able to explain more in person as I shared it.

As stated in the intro, it occupies a space between gestalt and variant multiclass. A sort of "lesser" Gestalt. It also allows an interesting option to focus further on a primary concept as well, something that the gestalt system left rather lacking. But that is all for the next phase of this recruitment....

Hmm, I think I may have confused some. My post last night was meant to say that I will be running whichever game is selected in Golarion, but the game itself is still totally up in the air. Please keep voting for your top three choices for which game to run, I want your feedback!

Here are the current standings (remember, your first choice gets 3 votes, second choice 2, and third choice 1).

Another Night at The Broken Broadsword - 21
Holding Out for a Hero - 17
The Felonious Few / Your Last Chance - 16
The king is (un)Dead, Long Live the King - 16
You get a Kingdom, and YOU get a Kingdom - 15
Stonefall: the Beginning - 10
Under a Twice Cursed Moon - 10
Fortune, Fame, and Honor Among Thieves - 5

As you can see, it is very much still a close race (well, perhaps not for Honor Among Thieves...) I am planning to accept votes for game choice through November 3rd, so please, share any thoughts and ask your questions!

Given it's unanimous selection today, I think it's safe to say that people would prefer the game be set in Golarion - and so it will be! Consider the campaign setting question answered, and just focus on your three choices.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Wow, thank you for all the early interest! I am also excited to see some of those who participated in my "pre-recruitment game design" thread.

Let me say yes, of course Holding Out for a Hero should summon up thoughts of that song, because that was my intent! Whether you know it from it's original film Footloose, from it's awesome 2000's appearance in Shrek 2, or it's most recent run in Loki, all are epic stories, befitting an epic adventure that this could possibly be.

For The Felonious Few, I would prefer to lean more toward the miscreant/antihero/criminal-of-circumstance side of this concept rather than a fistful of sociopaths. Not to say that evil characters would be unwelcome, just not looking for a CE murder hobo or NE guy who just has to betray everyone.

For Stonefall, I have an alternate race from a homebrew campaign to represent a "Norse-esque" people descended from giants. We would be using that, its a little more thematic but still gives options. And doomsday? Well, let's just wait and see....

Hmm, hadn't thought about Ash's chainsaw... But may just be tempted into some kind of steampunk fun if The King is (un)Dead happens... after all, hail to the King, baby.

Another Night at the Broken Broadsword is definitely the most open-ended, allowing for all manner of dungeonny-goodness.

Let's keep the votes, and comments, coming!

EDIT I think I just fixed the spreadsheet link. Can someone confirm they can now open and view it?

Greetings and well met, adventurers! I seek a group of brave soul to embark on a grand quest together! The question to ask first is... what quest shall we embark on? Now is your chance to CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE!

In the spoiler below, I have shared 8 potential games that I would be interested in running. I would like to allow the gaming public to vote to determine which game. I ask that You select your first, second, and third choices. Also answer whether you would prefer the setting to be Golarion or the Forgotten Realms. If Golarion is used, it would be set right at the end of the 1st edition timeline, if Forgotten Realms are used, it would be set during the 3rd edition era.

Please reply with your thoughts below. I will be tallying people's votes in the attached spreadsheet, Choose Your Own Adventure. Your first choice will be worth 3 points, your second 2 points, and your third 1 point. I will be accepting votes for which game to run for the next week, ending next Wednesday at 11:59 pm EST.

Choose Your Own Adventure:

Game Concept: Another Night at the Broken Broadsword
Character Themes: tavern regulars, classic fantasy tropes, tropes remixed
Campaign Arcs: anything is possible
The Broken Broadsword is a rundown, ramshackle tavern and flophouse that has been repaired and rebuilt so many times, a first time visitor might wonder how it even stands. Smelling constantly of stale beer and body odor, it is nevertheless the fabled watering hole of countless heroes throughout the ages. On any night you can find a rogues' gallery of characters awaiting the next bit of trouble - a hooded man stumbles out of the rain and with his dying breath drops a relic from a forgotten ruin, a demonic fiend is accidentally summoned by a drunken warlock, pirates storm in and press gang the passed out guests into a crew, the King's chamberlain sneaks in seeking volunteers to rescue a missing royal child, a pickpocket opens a seized scrollcase and discovers the legend of a mystical artefact, praetorian city guard storm the place to arrest the entire house, hordes of zombies come marching out of a nearby crypt seeking one of the Broadsword's guests - it all could happen on any night!

Game Concept: You get a kingdom… and You get a kingdom… and YOU get a kingdom!
Character Themes: bastard children of monarch
Campaign Arcs: new frontier, castle owners
The King has always been known for his womanizing ways. Given that the kingdom has a history of internal fighting because of its inheritance laws, the king is keen to maintain stability. He obviously can't openly acknowledge his many illegitimate offspring, yet wants to provide for them as well. The discovery of a distant island, complete with an ancient, not-quite-ruined castle, has prompted his high counselor to come up with a solution: grant the bastard children the island, with responsibility to rebuild the castle and explore and defend the land! Surely his offspring will all get along, right?

Game Concept: Fortune, Fame, and Honor… among Thieves!
Character Themes: same class/class category
Campaign Arcs: thieves' guild, oppressive monarchy, occupied country
Every grand city, full of amazement and wonder, is not without its beggars, urchins, and orphans. The destitute try to eek out a living in whatever way possible. From the ranks of the flee-bitten souls rises a band of intrepid rakes, looking to make a name for themselves. But in the shadows of the city prowl many a danger: rival gangs and powerful guilds, and worse things can be found if you pry too deep. Then, of course, there is the oppressive city guard. Can the hopeless rise to be lords of the city's underworld?

Game Concept: Holding out for a Hero
Character Themes: new batch (children/apprentices of past heroes), childhood friends
Campaign Arcs: recover artifact, stop evil plot, defend the kingdom
The tragic fate of the greatest adventurers is that with success comes responsibility. Many end up with duties and titles to kingdoms, religions, and major organizations. Gone are the days when they can deal with whatever problem they choose. But, they are often served by the best pupils, perhaps even their own offspring. And when such threats arise, who better to send then your best and brightest.

The Forgotten Realms has sooooo many famous NPC parties, any could be the inspiration for this game: Lord's Alliance, Chosen of Mystra / Seven Sisters, Heroes of Highmoon, Companions of the Hall, Harpers, Force Grey, Knights of Myth Drannor, Company of Crazed Adventurers.

Game Concept: Born Under a Twice-Cursed Moon
Character Themes: secret society, last members of forgotten bloodline
Campaign Arcs: discover lost city, race against time
In the era before these times, the world was torn asunder by the elemental powers of chaos. The world nearly crumbled, but a band of brave heroes ventured to the city at the center of the shattering energy, and bound the chaos to hold the world together. They're very essence, the blood within their body, was changed in this process. Eons have passed since this day, and the bindings that hold chaos within are slipping. But if precious few descendants of those original heroes, who still bear touch of the blood, remain. Can they be united to once again fulfill the heroic destiny of their ancestors?

Game Concept: Stonefall: the Beginning
Character Themes: single race (norse), isolated population, clanbound
Campaign Arc: discover the unknown, race against time
Your clan are a proud people, a mighty people, who have survived for generations in the harshest mountains in all the world. Far from lands called civilized, you face innumerable dangers on a daily basis. Several other clans, like your own, have maintained a position elsewhere in the mountains. Get in recent months, your plan is lost touch with each of them. Uncertain what has become, your cleanse air has foreseen dire prophecy. Now is the time the mightiest must rise up, save your people. Now is the time of Stonefall, it has begun.

Game Concept: The Felonious Few / Your Last Chance...
Character Themes: misfits, convicts / dirty dozen
Campaign Arcs: impossible odds, race against time
Desperate times call for desperate measures, and there is no one more desperate than a nation that is losing a war. In such moments, one might consider the most likely of allies, perhaps even those inhabiting their own prisons. You have been given the choice, rot in jail til the end of your days, or help defend the country and win you're freedom. The odds are stacked against you, but the chance to return to your own life, free of shackles? That might just be worth the risk.

Game Concept: The King is (un)Dead, Long Live the King
Character Themes: refugees/exiles, monster hunters
Campaign Arcs: old king/god returned, guerilla warfare, horde (undead)
In days long past, our kingdom was ruled over by a cruel wizard and his vile arcane minions. They stood as gods above our ancestors, demanding worship. After centuries of slavery, the people rose up and defeated them. But they were not completely destroyed. Three years hence, their cultist followers, long working in the shadows, achieved their goal and saw their god-king reborn an undead ruler. The realm was swarmed by a plague of undeath, and those of us who escaped have plotted to bring down the fiend. The weapons used to defeat him are still secured in vaults within our once great kingdom, but we need to brave the horde of undead to recover them. Can a few nimble, daring souls make it in and recover the key to reclaiming our kingdom and laying low this tyrant?

PLEASE DON'T START CREATING CHARACTERS YET!!! We don't even know what game this will be. I posted the character creation rules so they are on the first post, rather than lost in the middle of the book. Once the Game voting ends on the 3rd and the game is announced, I plan to leave the recruitment open through November 14th, maybe longer.

Character Creation:

Depending upon which campaign is selected, some of these may vary slightly (race, for instance, in certain settings), but the below will serve as the core for character creation.

Ability Scores 30 point buy
Level 4th
Race all common are welcome, uncommon and featured will also be entertained, assuming the character history fits the game.
Class all core, base, and hybrid classes are welcome. Summoner must use the Unchained rules; Barbarian, Monk, and Rogue can chose to. No 3PP material. We will be using an in-development ruleset I have been working on, [i]Demi-Gestalt
. It occupies a space partway between full Gestalt and Variant Multiclass (neither of which are available in this game). The demi-gestalt system in fleshed out in the linked spreadsheet above.
Background I pulled these from PF2e and adjusted them for 1st edition. You gain a +2 to one ability score, and a -2 to another. You cannot apply a +2 to a score that also gains a bonus from race, but you can apply it to a negative from race to cancel it out. You also gain to skills as class skills; they also count as Background Skill when determining how you can spend your skill points. The backgrounds are fleshed out in the linked spreadsheet above.
Traits two, taking a drawback allows a third
Skills 2+int increases to 4+int, all others remain the same. We are using the Background Skills optional rule. We will also be using Athletics in place of Climb and Swim.
Feats Elephant in the Room feat tax rules are in effect.
Hit Dice modified minimum die (1d6 = 1d3+3, 1d8 = 1d4+4, 1d10 = 1d5+5, 1d12 = 1d6+6)
Equipment 7000 gp, no single item worth more than 3000 gp

History I expect a fleshed out character background, you can select the format that works best for you (freehand writing, appearance/personality/background, 10 minute background, bullet point list, etc).

Without diving into all the details, it's the interesting gap in gestalt: you can make combos like the sorcerer / scaled fist monk who has 9 level casting, good base attack, all good saves, decent skill points, a bunch of abilities, and a single primary ability score, but no real way to build a fluffed out sorcerer, or the best martial artist in history.

Sure, you could go sorcerer/oracle (or bard/summoner/eldritch scion magus/etc) to make a dual caster class build, or a fighter/monk for more combat feats & abilities, but it still doesn't actually allow focus on the single concept. An oracle with more mysteries and bolstered casting. A monk with access to more ki, a rogue that is truly the master of all skills.

Still working out the details, and I am sure there will need to be tweaks along the way. But hopefully I will have it up soon.

Ridge, hahaha, I have to say I got a good laugh flashing back to watching the old animated series as a kid! And no, I was not watching it during its initial release (was an infant/toddler back then), but have found memories from my childhood all the same.

For any who have been following along, I have been compiling the options into a single file while also working out the mechanics on something my in person party has been toying with: demi-gestalt. It is a mashup of Gestalt and Variant Multiclass with an option to also double down on a single core concept if that is your preference. I am hoping to have it all written up in the next few days, and move into more of a recruitment process. Thank you all so much for following along!

Hmm, looks like I need to come up with a villian worthy of the crusade!

Two questions:
1 - many Gestalt characters are very MAD, would you consider a 25 pt buy to assist with that?
2 - any consideration for the Elephant in the Room feat tax rules?

Definitely excited to see what Seb's finalized character creation details are! I have a few ideas flying around, hoping to make one a reality.

Ridge, Tara, those are both awesome! I have a few coming of my own...

A tavern that is a church - and a priesthood full of drunken monks! I love it!

Seb, thank you for your understanding and welcoming nature. Text-based communication can be interpretted in different ways, so I was worried I had caused offense. I will definitely still apply.

Obviously, it's all up to Seb, but I like Tara's compromise proposal on ability scores. Just my 2 copper.

Hi Seb, my sincerest apologies. The last thing I would want to do is offend anyone in our gaming community, especially a GM whose game I am interested in. I wrote that post quick on my cell phone, and clearly it did not convey my tone or direction appropriately. I played a little Dark Sun back in the day, so when I saw your recruitment, I got really excited. Launching into the many files you linked and finding your old recruitment details, I was doubly excited for the opportunity to mix third party with paizo material, and even work in a little third edition as was listed prior. I started wondering what cool things I may have forgot from way back in the days of 3.5.

In your posts to that point, you had referenced spheres casters but no other specifics, so I assumed the open options from your old recruitment would stand. When Cuan and monkeygod were pushing for third party with the limitation of paizo material, I was trying to inquire as to why (I have since looked and found your other recent recruitment that was referenced). Clearly my quick response and its intended casual/playful manner was lost entirely in translation and came across instead as me questioning what you want to do with your game. Absolutely not. I think one of the most important things for any game master is to run a game they're excited about, including using the rules they desire. Once again, I would like to offer my apologies.

Having already offered offence, I believe it would be in poor form for me to apply for your game. It seems like you already have a core crew returning, and multiple other people interested (let me throw a couple stars at both SmooshieBanana and Tara Ravenheart, they are both a blast to play with), so I wish you only the best of luck in your storytelling endeavor!

With all respect,
O.S.

Wow, thank you everyone for some great suggestions and feedback. I appreciate all of your input. The lists have expanded to the point that I need to spoiler them to make them manageable. Several were close so I combined them.

On the topic of Campaign Setting, several points were made in favor of Golarion or FR. While I am not removing homebrew completely from the options, it would likely be beneficial for all involved to use a published setting.

I played in an Iron GM game once. It was a cool concept, though sadly our GM was in a little over his head. Still, we had a good time, and have definitely played around with that format in my group as well.

There have been some questions about Character generation and source material. As the campaign itself still needs to be fleshed out, I am still quite a way from determining such details. I will say that, unfortunately, I have rather little experience with most 3pp material and will likely bar it's use. Sorry if that is disappointing for some. I do plan to throw a couple curve balls at character creation, so do not fear, there will be plenty of goodness to go around.

As to the suggestion of a published AP, I have actually run two in the past to completion (in person, not PbP). I found it actually required more prep work for me to modify the APs as opposed to writing my own material. The suggested examples are great ideas, and it looks like the GMs are crushing it; it's just not what I am looking to do at this time.

Character Concept & Theme:

Holy order
King's Guard / musketeer
Convicts / dirty dozen / suicide squad
Secret society
Single race
Same class or class category
New Batch / children & apprentices of past heroes
Old Guard / retirees & heroes past prime
Childhood friends
Isolated population
Performing troupe/circus
Mysteriously resurrected
Army unit / strike squad / medieval special forces
Mysteriously murdered then Reincarnated
Tavern regulars
Refugees or Exiles
Connected Past
Rivals forced together
Everyone is afflicted by the same curse
Apprentices of one NPC
Bastard children of a king or God
Last members of a forgotten bloodline
Misfits
Non-standard races/monsters
Musical band
Lycanthropes/Skinwalkers
Undead

Campaign Arc:

Thieves Guild
Rebels in occupied nation / evil government
Defense against Invasion
Gods go Silent
Rescue missing monarch
Race against time
Recover artifact(s)
Search for lost city
Magical plague
Civil war
Child of destiny
Frontier / undiscovered lands
Horde (undead, humanoid, extra planar?)
Players imprisoned
On the run
Become famous
Planar travel
Some sort of military
Gods Wake up
Home/Castle Owners
Royal Wedding
Drafted into the Army
The Great Games
Wake up in a room with a dead man
Marked for death
Us against an army (300-esque)
Meteor crash
The dead walk at night (from dusk till dawn)
Protect the Kingdom
Guerilla Warfare

Okay, if you still have more ideas to add to either category, please share them. At this point, I would like to shift the phase to Game Concept. Here, put together a pair together a Character Theme and a Campaign Arc to submit a proposal.

Here is an example:

Game Concept: When Our Prayer Are Not Answered
Character Theme: holy order
Campaign Arc: gods have gone silent

You can also use more than one of each - example:

Game Concept: The Stone Helms of Mithral Hall
Character Theme(s): single race (dwarf), kingsguard
Campaign Arc(s): protect the kingdom, us against an army

I greatly look forward to seeing everyone's ideas!

...what kind of game would people be interested in playing?

Hi all, Oblivion's Scion here. I returned to the boards a little over a month ago after stepping away for family reasons late last year. Since then I have been toying around with the idea of starting up a game. As for what that game will be, well that is the point of this thread. I thought it might be intriguing to have the community help come up with a concept. So below I'm going to lay out two topics (character concept/theme and campaign arc) and I'm requesting people submit additions to those categories. What do I mean? Let's work through it a bit.

Character Concept & Theme
Holy order
King's Guard / musketeer
Convicts / dirty dozen / suicide squad
Secret society
Single race
Same class or class category
New Batch / children & pupils or past heroes
Childhood friends
Isolated population

Campaign Arc
Thieves Guild
Rebels in occupied nation / evil government
Defense against Invasion
Gods go Silent
Rescue missing monarch
Race against time
Recover artifact(s)
Search for lost city
Magical plague
Civil war
Child of destiny
Frontier / undiscovered lands
Horde (undead, humanoid, extra planar?)
Players imprisoned
On the run

Here are the settings I would be comfortable running the game in:

Campaign Setting
Golarion
Forgotten Realms (3rd edition, 1369-75 DR)
Ravenloft (late 2nd edition, Domains of Dread)
HB: shattered world / post-apocalyptic
HB: war torn medieval fantasy

Once we have a good list for the two aforementioned topics we will be putting them together to create game concepts. But that will come in a few days. So, let the creativity flow!

Intriguing concept, my one question is why all the hate for the Paizo classes and feats? As someone who has had limited use of 3pp material, I know their is a wealth of it out there, but feel like both access can be a challenge, and with limited knowledge, it could be harder to efficiently manage. If it's to balance power scaling, so that those with paizo classes aren't left in the dust, I can understand.

I should have my submission, a ratfolk investigator (not playing off the joke line here, it's what I proposed earlier in the thread) done by the morning.

Kingmaker is a bang-up adventure, and from the gameplay thread seems like you are having quite the time.

I am leaning toward a "rogue" myself, but was curious, I assume you mean rogue as a broad-archetype for a skilled/stealthy type?

5d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 6, 1, 5) = 17 - 14
5d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 6, 5, 4) = 23 - 16
5d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 5, 3, 2) = 18 - 14
5d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 5, 1, 1) = 16 - 14
5d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 1, 1, 1) = 10 - drop
5d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 2, 4, 6) = 19 - 14
5d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 6, 3, 4) = 17 - 13

Wow, that is a truly well-rounded yet exceptional character. Definitely a good roguish set. Would the existing players be looking for a particularly combat effective rogue, or someone more skill based? Any thoughts?

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I think this could be a truly fresh take on a classic AP! Great proposal!

So I had a brief idea for a winemaker out of Napa. Could've been a quirky spin. But honestly, given the huge amount of gorgeous national parks in California, I think I am going to write up a concept for a park ranger (ranger). Will flesh it out shortly.

RM's Existing Players & Concepts
Corrin - Kitsune Arcanist
Yeda - (race?) Shaman
Zel -
Sazzat - (race?) Bloodrager
Loxley - Kitsune Slayer

@RizzenMagnus: if Zel selects a class that an applicant selects prior to rolling, would we be able to rebuild our application with another class?

I am thinking a Ratfolk Investigator. (My alternate idea would be Hunter)

Rolls:

3d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 4, 5) + 6 = 18
3d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 3, 3) + 6 = 17
3d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 6, 2) + 6 = 15
3d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 6, 1) + 6 = 19
3d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 4, 3) + 6 = 15
3d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 5, 4) + 6 = 18

Hey GM Coyote, I dropped you a question in a PM. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!
