Pad300's work out likewise is doable. I am sorry your idea doesn't manifest as you'd like. The demi-gestalt system is obviously still a work in progress, and just like any alternate rule, not everything lines up perfectly. Indeed, that is often the case, especially when trying to maximize output over building to a thematic concept. I think one of the issues, unfortunately, is that Zealot and Warlock should never have been listed as Archetypes, but rather included with the base class as additional Vigilante Specializations (that's what they really are). And really, the larger problem is they tried to create a "Catch All" highly customizable class, when it should have been 4 individual "Vigilante" classes (Avenger, Stalker, Warlock, Zealot... A to Z!).

As to whether the Inquisitor is more powerful than the Zealot-Vigilante, that is debatable. It is a focused class with a single concept, built around that. The Vigilante is highly customizable (with a wealth of both social and combat talents), but customizability has always had a cost in both D&D and Pathfinder class design. To your final question, each Talent would require 1 Boon Feat (from a quick review, most are equivalent to a feat or a little more - if there is a talent that mimics an ability I have already called out as having a higher cost, then it would get that cost instead).

Pad300 hmm, Swashbuckler's Deeds hit an interesting point, similar to Bardic Music. Starting Panache is lower than rounds for BM, but also has a manner to recharge throughout the day, so that in a negligible difference. I am going to say 1 Boon Feat to gain Panache/Grit and two Deeds, 1 Boon Feat per two additional Deeds.

Today is a good day to..o The Omdura is an interesting choice, I just glanced over it and am intrigued by the Inquisitor-meets-Bard-meets-Paladin concept of it.

AdamWarnock I am morbidly intrigued by your concept with a 3 Charisma, and am curious how the 3 will manifest in your character's personality. In addition, having spend a Boon Feat to gain access to the Sorcerer spell list, you can also prepare Sorcerer/Wizard spells in your Cleric prepared spell slots. Now, you also have your Advance, I am not sure if you are spending that on Combat, Spellcasting, or Skills. But if you spend it on Spellcasting, you will be a stronger Cleric and have more spell slots, thus leaving you with more of a resource to share among your casting pursuits. Does that clarify?

Doing some research, it would seem that even permanent energy resistance from two different sources (like race or class) do not stack.
AdamWarnock You can also get heavy armor proficiency by spending a feat on it... like normal.

Jereru Exceptional spontaneous caster would use the "Except" column for caster level, have their class's spell progression at +1 level, and your Spells Known are all increased by +1. So, at 4th level Sorcerer, you would currently have CL 5, use the 5th level spells per day (6/4), and your spells known increase by +1 (7/4/3). Make sense? And yes, you can take the generic Metamagic Master (and Magical Lineage as well).

Varvara Rdknight was correct about the number of Boon Feats you have. Interestingly though, purchasing your Mystery grants you the 1st revelation (part of the trade off for the curse), each additional revelation after that needs to be purchased separately. So you actually have one more Boon Feat to spend (either to retake Furious Focus, another revelation, or something else you want).

Rdknight Yes, you can take Sylph as a race - it's actually rather underpowered, so I might even give you a little boost if you are chosen. You don't get two classes casting, so if you select Exceptional casting, it advances whichever is your primary class (in your case druid). You can then spend Boon Feats to get access to Witch Spells that you can cast with your Druid progression. Does that make sense?

TheWaskally Boon Feats cannot be spent to gain spellcasting. With Cleric as your primary, you cast as a Cleric. You have an Advance to spend as per the Spreadsheet. You can then spend your Boon Feats to gain abilities from your subclass, in this case Sorcerer. Now, you can certainly spend your Boon Feats on general feats, this just means you get less powers from your subclass. If you wanted to embrace your Sorcerer subclass, I would recommend:
1st level Boon Feat: Bloodline
2nd level Boon Feat: Access Subclass's Spell List (lower)
4th level Boon feat: Bloodline (2nd power)
Does that all make sense?

Pad300 Hmm, Summon Monster is an interesting one. I am going to say there are two possibilities:
1) If you have purchased the Eidolon ability, it will be 1 Boon Feat per tier of spellcasting (lower, moderate, high) - so 3 over full progression.
2) If you are purchasing only Summon Monster, it will be 1 Boon Feat per two levels of the spell.
On Item Creation feats, you may spend up to 4000 gp on item creation, but it will require the requisite skill checks.

Archpaladin Zousha sorry to hear that, you still have plenty of time to come up with a concept.

Tara Ravenheart haha, I love them all, they hit "Classic Fantasy Tropes" and "Tropes Remixed" both on the head! Definitely excited to see what you decide on and write up.

Everyone, keep the questions and characters coming! I think at this point, based on the extra time necessary to use the Demi-Gestalt system, I am going to be looking at next Sunday, the 21st, as the final day of recruitment.
Alright, here is the next response load:

Advances You receive the one advance at character creation, no more. You cannot spend Boon Feats to gain more Advances. This is one of the major differences between full Gestalt and Demi-Gestalt - it prevent sthe Wizard with Good BA, 3 good saves, and solid skills.

Subclass (swapping) The idea of this system is to give a boost and some extra abilities while making a thematic character (getting several multi-class abilities without the cost of multiclassing); cherry picking levels and trading in/out tends to fly in the face of that. AdamWarnock, perhaps there is an archetype you can apply to either ranger or fighter to get what you are looking for?

Prestige Classes much like swapping of subclasses above, I am highly hesitant to allow multiclassing (including Prestige classes) at this point. The system already grants a manner of multiclassing, and I am concerned further multiclassing will be primarily for about ability stacking.

Pad300 Back on Friday you listed a potential build which I did not reply to. You get to select one Advance to apply to your character for his career. So, here goes: With Fighter as your primary class you begin as a "Noncaster". By taking Wizard as your subclass, you can spend your Advance to boost your spellcasting to "Limited Caster", which is the 4th level progression chart that rangers, paladins, and bloodragers have. We would establish a basic spell list for access (probably use the bloodrager's), then you could spend Boon Feats to gain access to the wizard spell list and abilities, including arcane school and anything that may be associated with any archetypes you applied to wizard. A cleaner way to build a Fighter/Wizard might in fact be to take Magus as primary, then Fighter as your subclass and go with a Combat Advance. This would give you d10 hit die, full BA, all the proficiencies of Magus, the ability to cast in light and medium armor at 1st level, and 6th-level progression.

Trevor86 You would use the 9 level (wizard/cleric/druid) chart for casting advancement. For spell lists for a class that has advanced beyond its normal level cap, we will establish a thematic spell list for the primary class. Gaining full access to the subclass's spells will still require expenditure of a feat. So, if you Advanced an Alchemist to a 9th level caster, we would create the 7th-9th level lists to reflect the previous 6 levels. Make sense?

Almonihah Having access to four different subclasses to tap into at your whim seems like a dangerously powerful option for a player to have - I am going to have to say no. In addition, in reading into the archetype, I see that it gains the Medium's Spirit ability; my apologies, but as I am not allowing the Occult classes, I would have to rule this archetype out as well.

Rdknight Familiars are a restriction for Witches, for without them they cannot cast spells - just as a spellbook is for a Wizard, an oath is for a Paladin, or a Curse is for an Oracle. As such, you gain that automatically by taking the subclass. A Swashbuckler/DG Witch would be a tough build. If you are looking to really embrace the spellcasting, I would go Witch (9th level caster) / DG Swashbuckler, take a Combat Advance to bring you up to average BA and d8 hit die, with casting in light armor. Then spend your Boon Feats on Swashbuckler abilities. I wonder if there are any archetypes for a 6th-level caster that make them "Witchy"? Might be a good option if you want to get to good BA. As to your question about weapon proficiencies, you get what your primary class has, and if you take a Combat advance, gain what is listed in the spreadsheet.

Locmore It is the cost per Spell Level - you would pay three feats, one for lesser magic (1st - 3rd level spells), one of moderate magic (4th - 6th level spells), and one for greater magic (7th - 9th level spells). So yes, you could be a Cleric of Nethys with access to the full spectrum of arcane magic as well.

Bharaz let me read over the Shifter and the archetype a couple times and I will get back to you on the Boon Feat costs.

Robert Henry Thank you greatly for compiling the list! I do not have a preferred format, and appreciate your assistance on this front. And Robert, yes Boram as a Rogue / DG Rogue could take either a Combat or Skill advance, and would increase a second saving throw to good.

Character Themes I applaud everyone for being creative and diving into the Demi-Gestalt system. In the recruitment, you may remember every Game has associated Character Themes. This game's were "Classic Fantasy Tropes" and "Tropes Remixed". I encourage each of you to look at how your character fits into one or both of these themes. I have not gone through every character, and some still need their backgrounds completed to fill it in. Below are three examples of embracing or twisting a classic fantasy trope.
Classic Fantasy Tropes
- Boram the Burglar (the Halfling "born to be a" Burglar)
Fantasy Tropes Remixed
- Lilianne Nightshade (Human Cursed to be a Monster - reversed!)
- Warren Connery (The Peasant Hero romancing the Princess - reversed!)

For those concerned about it taking them time to build a character, or worried about mistakes and errors - this system is new to everyone, I expect there to be issues. To this point it has only been used by a small group of people, so this will also test the system, and identify any challenges or opportunities it might have. The mechanics for characers can be adjusted, I will be looking at the core of the character, and the player's PbP history, for the majority of determining who I select.
Okay, I compiled these responses across the last day and a half, so they are scattered together in a hodge-podge order.

It honestly put me on a pretty down mood for yesterday, and I had to take some time just to consider my next step. But I came back this morning to reread them (and the 40+ other posts), and noticed a comparison of this campaign to being "vanilla"... and I laughed!

In 21st century America, we take vanilla for granted, and associate it with being simple. Yet vanilla is still one of the most expensive spices across the world. It is the unique unripened fruit of a genus of orchid from Central America, something much prized by the ancient Mayas and their successors. When the Spanish conquered the Aztecs empire in 1519, they brought both vanilla and chocolate back to the Old World, setting the flavor palettes of Europe ablaze. Out of it's natural element, the wild growing orchid was finicky and it failed to produce fruit in gardens across Europe. 300 years later, French businessmen took the plant halfway around the world to an island east of Madagascar, where a 12-year-old slave discovered a way to hand pollinate the plant to cause it to produce the fruit. Of course, that was only half the battle - the fruit would need to be grown, carefully tended to, harvested while still under ripe, allowed to cure in the sun and sweat at night for several months, dried, all before it could even be processed, most often into a paste or extract... Well, you can see the labor intensive nature of this.

It reminds me a lot of being a GM. Done well, a GM hopes to present a game much like vanilla ice cream: well liked by many, with a nuanced, dynamic flavor, that runs smooth and seems effortless, and that with bits of extra flare can become almost anything. Rarely the players think about all that goes into such a creation. If you think vanilla ice cream is bland, I challenge you to make some ice cream from scratch and don't add the vanilla (or any other flavoring agent), and see how it tastes.

Anywho, onto some commentary...

Locmore/Storm Dragon/Robert Henry - initially I really like the idea of Varisia for this game - It is supposed to be a quintessential frontier, with relatively small city states, lots of different environments, ruins of a forgotten empire, and all manner of mystery. But it is also been the setting for a fistful of adventure paths at this point, stealing much of that mystery away. Brevoy, the River Kingdoms, and Ioboria present many of the same options, but with far less in stone. In the end, the setting used will be a decision collectively made by those players selected for the game and myself.

Almonihah - sounds like an interesting thematic adjustment to the Prowler at World's End. As for your "weird things" with demi-gestalt, post them here so that I can consider them. The system grants a good deal of freedom and significant power increase already, so I trust your ideas will be a responsible exploration.

Hack Anslash I agree with your Bard vs Skald issue, its something I had always bemoaned about the hybrid class.

Robert Henry - For your subclass, you can select another class (with any legal archetypes), or up to two archetypes for your primary class (outside of any already applied to your primary class in the first step) that you can purchase abilities from with your boon feats. Background skills do not grant a +1 if it is already a class skill for you (like a trait), but rather allows you to spend Background Skill ranks on those two skills (that are otherwise 'adventuring skills').

Raqeul Cailean - you pretty much on target (for both skills and abilities). So you now have 7+int skills points and access to the various additional options listed. And for your boon feats, your first one is both "Bardic Music/Inspire Courage", and then an additional feat for "Fascinate" and "Inspire Competence" (see the notes at the bottom of the Demi Gestalt spreadsheet). This leaves you with one Boon Feat left.

ON DEMI-GESTALT okay, I started trying to answer everyone's questions separately, but perhaps putting them together into a cohesive thought might be best.

I have been blessed to game with the same evolving group for over 20 years. As a whole we enjoy creating thematic characters, committing to a concept and then working the mechanics around that. Pathfinder did a good job setting up from third edition in making single-class characters strong, but that makes multiclass options often longer behind. The hybrid classes did a decent job to address this, or may have, if your combo was one of those that received a treatment. The variant multiclass system was another attempt, and for some it is good, but it's benefits vary wildly (barbarian gets rage @ 3rd, rogue sneak attack @ 7th, and paladin smite @ 11th). And of course, costs half your feats; feats being a resource Monte Cook (one of 3rd edition's creators) identified as severely lacking (his alternate rules recommended 1/lvl) after he left WotC and created Malhavoc Press.

The idea behind the Demi Gestalt system is an attempt to find the sweet spot between Variant Multiclass and Gestalt; more impact then the former without the unbridled fury of the latter. My home group has been playing with it a bit, and enjoying it, but they are also not trying to break/game it - I would ask you all to do the same.

Spellcasting you can only get a spellcasting progression from your primary class, not from your subclass (you cannot purchase it with your boon feats). You can improve your spellcasting by spending your Advance (Step 3) on it. So if you start as a Bloodrager and have selected Oracle as your subclass, you could spend your Advance on Spellcasting. This would take you from a Limited Caster (4 level progression) to a Moderate Caster (6 level progression). You would still be a Bloodrager, but instead use the 6-level chart (like the bard). Higher level spells would need to be established, and any spells whose levels would be broken by the change would be corrected. I have also added some specific Boon Feat costs to add on features to your spellcasting at the bottom of the demi-gestalt spreadsheet.

Restrictions/Codes/Curses any limitation that your subclass has applies to you as per normal. So paladins have oaths, oracles have curses, etc.

Occult Classes I did not include these as options in the recruitment as I am unfamiliar with them. With so many pieces already in motion, I would ask that you leave them off the plate. Thank you.

I have to get to work now, but will post more later!
Imagine the joy and excitement I went to bed with Thursday night, having a PbP determined by vote with 40 people participating in the processs... only to awaken to the first few posts basically trashing the process and the game that won. It honestly put me on a pretty down mood for yesterday, and I had to take some time just to consider my next step. But I came back this morning to reread them (and the 40+ other posts), and noticed a comparison of this campaign to being "vanilla"... and I...Oblivion's Scion2021-11-06T22:11:39ZRe: Forums: Recruitment: Choose Your Own Adventure!
Character Themes: tavern regulars, classic fantasy tropes, tropes remixed
Campaign Arcs: anything is possible
The Broken Broadsword is a rundown, ramshackle tavern and flophouse that has been repaired and rebuilt so many times, a first time visitor might wonder how it even stands. Smelling constantly of stale beer and body odor, it is nevertheless the fabled watering hole of countless heroes throughout the ages. On any night you can find a rogues' gallery of characters awaiting the next bit of trouble - a hooded man stumbles out of the rain and with his dying breath drops a relic from a forgotten ruin, a demonic fiend is accidentally summoned by a drunken warlock, pirates storm in and press gang the passed out guests into a crew, the King's chamberlain sneaks in seeking volunteers to rescue a missing royal child, a pickpocket opens a seized scrollcase and discovers the legend of a mystical artefact, the praetorian city guard storm the place to arrest the entire house, or hordes of zombies come marching out of a nearby crypt seeking one of the Broadsword's guests - it all could happen on any night!

So, we begin Phase 2 of this recruitment. Reminder that Character Build rules are in the first post of this thread. I am sure I will need to answer questions about certain aspects of the Demi-Gestalt ruleset as character creation moves on. You are encouraged to use the Character Themes listed above to create your concept - so a character one might find in a fantasy tavern, potentially using a classic fantasy trope - but will it be a straight presentation, or a twist / interpretation of an old classic? This is meant to have a fun, light-hearted, nostalgic vibe - so embrace it. Let's see some characters!
Well, that was an exciting end to the voting!
Under a Twice Cursed Moon - 14

And as requested, here are my thoughts for where each game might take place in Golarion:

Another Night at the Broken Broadsword - this game needs a setting with lots of environmental variety, and not too much structure. A fractured nation with a smaller/weaker government, where the wilds are dangerous. Varisia, Brevoy, and the River Kingdoms all come to mind.

You Get a Kingdom, and You Get a Kingdom... And YOU Get a Kingdom! - an island far off the western coast of Avistan.... Could the ruins you are sent to inhabit possibly be a forgotten piece of ancient Azlant?

Fortune, Fame, and Honor Among Thieves - The nation of Taldor is a tainted, greedy, shadow of its once noble self. Where better then the capital of Oppara to set a game about a den of thieves?!

Holding out for a Hero - Nowhere can more heroes be found, and this their apprentices, offspring, and followers, then the center of the world - Absalom. Of course, this adventure will no doubt take them far and wide, but the Jewel of the Inner Sea will factor in their story.

Born Under a Twice Cursed Moon - the Land of Nex almost fell to magical cataclysm during the war with Geb - hell, the Mana Wastes are proof of that. Perhaps the end of the war came at the will of the ancient heroes... But their efforts are now failing.

Stonefall: the Beginning - Though a few northern lands are populated by "barbarians", the Lands of the Linnorm Kings and the mighty Ulfen who call it home I believe most accurately fit my vision for Stonefall. Mighty Norse heroes, whose rulers have literally slain a dragon single-handedly, that sounds like a people of legend...

Felonious Few - Long have the citizens of Andoran fought to cast off the reigns of Cheliax, but the devil-worshippers play by a different set of rules, making it near impossible for them to repel their former masters. Perhaps it's time for them to employ a force with looser morals to help even the odds.

King is (un)Dead, Long Live the King - There are two locations that jump out as obvious settings for the hordes of undead to have conquered - Lastwall/Ustalav (after the Whispering Tyrant escapes), or Osirion (perhaps the Pharaohs of Ascension have returned). A third option could to end the undead horror that is Geb, perhaps even with some PCs whose families have been in exile from Geb for... Oh, 5000 years?
With just about 24 hours left, here are the current standings:

Let me say yes, of course Holding Out for a Hero should summon up thoughts of that song, because that was my intent! Whether you know it from it's original film Footloose, from it's awesome 2000's appearance in Shrek 2, or it's most recent run in Loki, all are epic stories, befitting an epic adventure that this could possibly be.

For The Felonious Few, I would prefer to lean more toward the miscreant/antihero/criminal-of-circumstance side of this concept rather than a fistful of sociopaths. Not to say that evil characters would be unwelcome, just not looking for a CE murder hobo or NE guy who just has to betray everyone.

For Stonefall, I have an alternate race from a homebrew campaign to represent a "Norse-esque" people descended from giants. We would be using that, its a little more thematic but still gives options. And doomsday? Well, let's just wait and see....

Hmm, hadn't thought about Ash's chainsaw... But may just be tempted into some kind of steampunk fun if The King is (un)Dead happens... after all, hail to the King, baby.

Another Night at the Broken Broadsword is definitely the most open-ended, allowing for all manner of dungeonny-goodness.

I appreciate all of your input. The lists have expanded to the point that I need to spoiler them to make them manageable. Several were close so I combined them.

On the topic of Campaign Setting, several points were made in favor of Golarion or FR. While I am not removing homebrew completely from the options, it would likely be beneficial for all involved to use a published setting.

I played in an Iron GM game once. It was a cool concept, though sadly our GM was in a little over his head. Still, we had a good time, and have definitely played around with that format in my group as well.

There have been some questions about Character generation and source material. As the campaign itself still needs to be fleshed out, I am still quite a way from determining such details. I will say that, unfortunately, I have rather little experience with most 3pp material and will likely bar it's use. Sorry if that is disappointing for some. I do plan to throw a couple curve balls at character creation, so do not fear, there will be plenty of goodness to go around.

As to the suggestion of a published AP, I have actually run two in the past to completion (in person, not PbP). I found it actually required more prep work for me to modify the APs as opposed to writing my own material. The suggested examples are great ideas, and it looks like the GMs are crushing it; it's just not what I am looking to do at this time.

Okay, if you still have more ideas to add to either category, please share them. At this point, I would like to shift the phase to Game Concept. Here, put together a pair together a Character Theme and a Campaign Arc to submit a proposal.

Here is an example:

Game Concept: When Our Prayer Are Not Answered
Character Theme: holy order
Campaign Arc: gods have gone silent

You can also use more than one of each - example:

Game Concept: The Stone Helms of Mithral Hall
Character Theme(s): single race (dwarf), kingsguard
Campaign Arc(s): protect the kingdom, us against an army

Hi all, Oblivion's Scion here. I returned to the boards a little over a month ago after stepping away for family reasons late last year. Since then I have been toying around with the idea of starting up a game. As for what that game will be, well that is the point of this thread. I thought it might be intriguing to have the community help come up with a concept. So below I'm going to lay out two topics (character concept/theme and campaign arc) and I'm requesting people submit additions to those categories. What do I mean? Let's work through it a bit.

Character Concept & Theme
Holy order
King's Guard / musketeer
Convicts / dirty dozen / suicide squad
Secret society
Single race
Same class or class category
New Batch / children & pupils or past heroes
Childhood friends
Isolated population

Campaign Arc
Thieves Guild
Rebels in occupied nation / evil government
Defense against Invasion
Gods go Silent
Rescue missing monarch
Race against time
Recover artifact(s)
Search for lost city
Magical plague
Civil war
Child of destiny
Frontier / undiscovered lands
Horde (undead, humanoid, extra planar?)
Players imprisoned
On the run

Here are the settings I would be comfortable running the game in:

Campaign Setting
Golarion
Forgotten Realms (3rd edition, 1369-75 DR)
Ravenloft (late 2nd edition, Domains of Dread)
HB: shattered world / post-apocalyptic
HB: war torn medieval fantasy

Once we have a good list for the two aforementioned topics we will be putting them together to create game concepts. But that will come in a few days. So, let the creativity flow!
...what kind of game would people be interested in playing?

Two chairs sit between several cogitator terminals and devices that deserve inquiry, and the wall running back from the door has a rack holding two shotguns, a bulky lascarbine, and a few metal rods with rubberized grips. But of primary note is the metal canister mounted on the wall next to the window, bearing a large green triangle with a skull and crossed bones emblazoned within it. Two tubes run down from in to some kind of pump with a lever, from which two more tubes run to small holes in the window, where nozzles extend into the tunnel.
Julien stows the access card away, hoping that the dented and bent metal will be useful at a future time.

We will be using the 1st edition Pathfinder rules, adjusted as laid out below in ‘Character Creation & Rules’. I am looking for 4 to 6 compelling character concepts that will fit in a mystical gothic setting. While the supernatural does in fact exist, most people think it is a thing of myth and legend. They are terrified by it, to be sure, but their rational mind tells them it is not real. Something in your life has given you a glimpse of that reality, something you can never truly deny again.

What he did is actually similar to how Iron GM events start. But really, there are so few GMs on this board - why the attempt to shatter his ideas, especially with flawed 'facts'?

Yes, flawed. My apologies, but you are confusing Pathfinder with Golarion. Pathfinder is a gaming system developed by Paizo Publishing based on the long-standing 3rd edition d20 ogl. Golarion is a campaign setting, initially released by Paizo Publishing under their GameMastery brand as a setting first for Crown of the Kobold King, an adventure module for D&D 3e, then for Adventure Paths while also publishing Dragon and Dungeon Magazines for Wizards of the Coasts (the creators of the 3rd edition system that is the basis of the Pathfinder system). Currently Golarion serves as the 'de facto' setting for Pathfinder (or rather Pathfinder was developed and published as a way to both continue their Adventure Paths in Golarion using a system similar to where they started and to capture all those gamers disenfranchised by the release of 4E), so I can understand the confusion.

But by no means does a Pathfinder game have to take place on Golarion. It could be in a homebrew setting, another published campaign world, or if the story revolves around the single adventure, those details could not even be pertinent and the setting is the train itself.

If RizzenMagnus chooses to set it in Golarion, as the GM/Storyteller, he has free agency to alter the setting as he sees fit. That is the beauty of a published campaign setting, adventure path, module, or what have you. Its the pieces to work with, but that can be shaped and molded as you weave a story. Think about how many aspects of Golarion did not exist when they published the first adventure in it well over a decade ago? Now, think of the Golarion of today? Everything in between was created by someone. And there have been instances where one piece of published material has contradicted another. It happens.

But if you insist it occur in Golarion, well, where could it work? RizzenMagnus has proposed a story of an ancient train-like construct, so using published Golarion material as a basis, here are a few ideas:
- it was developed as a massive siege engine in a mad demon's lab in the endless Abyss and has come through the Worldwound, laden with innumerable horrors to be unleashed on the face of Golarion.
- it is a piece of "star tech" from the Androffan space craft Divinity and its fleet, which crashed into Numeria almost ten thousand years ago. The Technic League discovered it and tried to reassemble it, but inadvertently created a monstrosity from playing with tech they do not understand. Now, the mad AI is wreaking havoc on Numeria and the lands beyond.
- like the pyramids of Osirion, it was built by a cabal of mages influenced by the Dominion of the Black, also allowing space-level tech up to ten thousand years ago. Perhaps the game is set in 4718, and the 'train' is traveling under the surface of Golarion, shattering the structure of the continents in preparation for the arrival of the prophecied Dominion invasion force that the Osirion countdown clocks foretell of.
- it is the corpse of some forgotten god that died in the battle to bind Rovagug beneath the Windswept Wastes in the Age of Creation. Perhaps it was one of his allies, a pseudo-monstrous centipede, and over the millennia the cult of Rovagug has turned the husk of its corpse into a 'god engine', hoping to use it as a deific explosive bomb to shatter the Dead Vault's doors open and release Rovagug once and for all!

Timeskeeper, the great thing is, if you don't want to play in whatever world/setting/version/game RizzenMagnus proposes, you don't have to. The great thing with PbP boards is a GM can come up with an idea and throw it out there, and if it tickles someone's fancy, they can apply. If its not your cup of tea, you wait for something that is. And I wish you, and all my fellow gamers, the best in all their gaming experiences. This is an amazing hobby we share. We each approach it from a different perspective, but we all love it. Make it your own, and enjoy it.

Well, I just finished my cup of coffee and need to get some work done.

RizzenMagnus, I think you have an awesome idea, run with it (if any of my threads above fuel your creativity, they are yours to use).

Stay Calm and Game On.
@Timeskeeper, why all the negativity to a really creative attempt by RizzenMagnus to combine everyone's ideas into a singular concept? What he did is actually similar to how Iron GM events start. But really, there are so few GMs on this board - why the attempt to shatter his ideas, especially with flawed 'facts'?
Yes, flawed. My apologies, but you are confusing Pathfinder with Golarion.
Thank you all for your patience. Over the last few days I have been working on your starting gear, as well as doing some secondary audits to characters. Thank you for any updates that have been requested. One thing I noticed as I dove deep was the broad range of rolled ability scores generated. While I have always liked the random chance part of rolled scores in RPGs, it can be challenging to play a character in a game when your counterparts have significantly higher scores. On the rolled portion of the ability scores (simply the 2d10 x 9 stats, totaled up) we range from 88 pts to 128 pts, before any modifiers have been applied. That's a 40 point swing, or rather 8 advances (which would cost a lot of experience). To that end, you will each be receiving some points to add to your base stats. It comes with a few rules (rules below reference 'rolled stat' - this is the total of the 2d10 rolled to create each ability score):

- no rolled stat can be raised above 18
- you cannot increase your lowest rolled stat
- no more than 5 can be added to any single stat
- you cannot add only 1 point to a stat (unless it is a rolled 17, which you can increase to 18)

These increases are on a diminishing curve, and will still present a range of totals, but will shorten the gap significantly.

The Enemy Within.

Greetings, one and all. I am looking to run a Dark Heresy game, the rpg system by Fantasy Flight Games set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. I will be using the 1st edition ruleset, with some updates from the subsequently released games by the same publisher.

A little about me: I have been gaming for about 25 years, starting with my introduction through AD&D in the early 90’s. Though medieval fantasy and D&D have always been a core part of my gaming experience, my experience has diversified across multiple systems and genres over the years. I have similarly been playing Warhammer 40k since my mid teens, and always felt the setting lent itself to so much more than wargaming. So, you can imagine my excitement when the 40k rpgs were released.

Several years ago, I relocated for my marriage, and though I have still managed to game some with my old group via Skype, I miss having a more regular gaming experience. My wife has actually been encouraging me to delve back into the hobbies I enjoy, and so I find myself here on these forums. I did a good deal of play-by-post back in the day on other sites, and feel it works well for story driven games. I take great joy in crafting an adventure, then placing it into the hands of a willing party and watching it evolve (often in some most unexpected ways).

CHARACTER CREATION

Sources Available I am open to most of the published content for Dark Heresy (1st Edition). I have significant reservations regarding the Lathe World book, as there is a notable power disparity between much of its content and other publications, so tread there carefully. Similarly, Ascension is designed for high level play, and as such is not currently available.

Stats You will roll your 9 stats in order, and may reroll one stat after completing your rolls. To allow for some customization, you may pick up to 2 pairs of stats and swap them, should you desire (ex: WS for WIL and DEX for STR). After these exchanges, apply any modifiers from homeworld, backgrounds, and the like.

Experience & Rank You are all experienced individuals who have been selected by the Inquisitor for your skills and talents. As such, you will start with 1200 xp to spend on character creation. This puts you at Rank 3. Please ensure the experience is spent at the appropriate rank (so you have 500 for rank 1, 500 for rank 2, and 200 for rank 3).

Backgrounds I think these are a great way to flesh out characters. As such, you gain 300 experience worth of backgrounds. Note that this does not add to your experience total as a character. Should you want more, you are free to spend experience during character creation to delve further into these.

Skills We will be using the shortened skill list that evolved over the several different 40K RPGs that were released after Dark Heresy. If a career grants you one of the previous skills, you gain the new consolidated skill instead. If the career normally grants more than one of the previous skills, you may select an appropriate alternate skill in its stead.

[Spoiler omitted]

Weapon Training The initial system made training in weapon based on weapon type and class (ex: las pistol). I will be using the updated system that streamlined it in future iterations, removing the differentiation of pistol vs basic training. Heavy training allows you to use heavy weapons in any category of weapon you are trained with. In some cases, you will now receive the same training twice from your starting career. If that is the case, you may substitute it with another weapon training available at Rank 1 or with a matching cost skill or talent from your Rank 1 career chart.

Specializations Bolt, Chain, Exotic, Flame, Heavy•, Las, Launcher, Low-Tech, Melta, Plasma, Power, Shock, Solid Projectile.

[Spoiler omitted]

Character Story Some prefer the classic “appearance/personality/history” format, others the “ten minute background”, still others go freeform. That I leave to you, but please conjure a character of more than just statistics. I do ask that you include how you can to be in the service of Inquisitor Brannor Smythe.

Equipment & Wealth We will handle these details after character selection. I have disliked how Dark Heresy assumes you still are paid commensurate with your past life when you are now an agent of the Inquisition, and so will be handling things a bit differently. That said, if there are any distinct, signature items that you feel fit your character concept, feel free to mention them.

"We are at war with forces too terrible to comprehend. We cannot afford mercy for any of its victims too weak to take the correct course. Mercy destroys us; it weakens us and saps our resolve. Put aside all such thoughts. They are not worthy of Inquisitors in the service of Our Emperor. Praise His name for in our resolve we only reflect his purpose of will."

- Inquisitor Enoch, the Book of Exorcisms
In the grim dark future, the existence of humanity balances on the edge of a knife. The Imperium of Man is defended by the innumerable masses of the Astra Militarum and the bio-enhanced warriors of the Adeptus Astartes. But when unique, insidious threats emerge, another force - the Inquisition - is called to deal with it.
