Wow, I only counted up to 57 rooms, which is still very much overkill.

I think what I might do, given my party's tendency to invest in their communities, is leave a few (20-25) rooms caved in and say that they could probably be repaired.


I'm going to be running the Shackled City Adventure Path, which started in Dungeon Magazine #97, way back in '03. Problem is, I'm not particularly huge on PF Geology/Geography and I was hoping for help.

Cauldron, the city of the Adventure Path, is located in the upper interior rim of a dormant volcano. It's also somewhat near a jungle, apparently.

Anyone know of a suitable place for it to be?


If by RP, you mean the Custom Monster Creation stuff, I don't believe he used that. Instead, what I got was this:

Grindylow
+2 Dexterity Grindylows are agile and dexterous
Small: Grindylows are Small and gain a +1 size bonus to their AC, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls,
a –1 penalty to their CMB and CMD, and a +4 size bonus on Stealth checks.
Darkvision: Grindylows can see in the dark up to 60 feet.
Tangling Tentacles (Ex) Although agrindylow can’t attack to cause damage with its six tentacles, these wriggling legs constantly writhe and reach out to tug at and trip adjacent foes. During the grindylow’s turn, it can make a single trip attack against any adjacent foe as a swift action. It gains a +4 racial bonus on trip attacks made with its tangling tentacles, and if it fails to trip a foe, that creature can’t attempt to trip the grindylow in retaliation.
Languages Aquan
Darkvision: Kobolds can see in the dark up to 60 feet.
Amphibious (Ex) Creatures with this special quality have the aquatic subtype, but they can survive indefinitely on land
Languages: Grindylows begin play speaking Aquan. Grindylows with high Intelligence can choose from the following: Common, Undercommon, Sylvan, Gnome, Goblin, Draconic, Auran

Additionally, I got a +4 to Stealth, and a swim speed of 120 feet.


So I would need two-weapon fighting and improved two weapon fighting, so that's slightly out of the question.

Alright, so if we ignore the bite, it should still be possible for this character to be arguably workable in the current iteration:

Move action to provoke AoO

Swipe at them with Panther style

Grindylow Trip (there's a question, since the Panther b~@$&slap and the GrindyLow Trip are both swift actions, I can't use both of them at once, can I? If that's true, I'll have to pick up Panther Claw at 6th level so it's a free action.)

Regular melee attack, and if both hits get 2d6 bleed damage.

As for duellist, Boar Ferocity allows me to deal piercing damage with my unarmed strikes.

At this point, I don't think I'll be moving past 8th level as a Monk. Given my lower Intelligence, I think that Duellist is limited at best to 3 or maybe 4 levels.

The followup question here is: at 4th level, a duelist gets Combat Reflexes when using a light or 1H piercing weapon. Does that mean I can take Panther Claw/Parry at level-up because I have it by virtue of a class ability? If not, then I'd be best off with MoMS 8 + Duel 3, and then go with Brawler up until the hypothetical 20th level endgame.

Oooh, ouch. Given that you've taken the time and effort, I'd argue this:

"Dave, as you can see I've spent a s+$!load on developing this character. Can you make it so that since you could be handicapping my melee character with terrible HP rolls, perhaps you could allow me to take, say, a bare minimum of 60-70% of the maximum roll as a minimum here? So for example, instead of getting cocked up by a 1HP fighter, you start as a 6 + CON HP fighter?"

Assuming your DM is called Dave here.

That is kind of the middle ground that would work.

But on the other hand, in my experience it's better for a GM to make a game more lethal by creating risky situations than by artifically adjusting the scales and measures of the ruleset that they're using.


Thinking of taking Crane Style next for my Grindylow MoMS monk, at level 8, using Boar, Panther and Crane, fighting defensively, move to provoke an AoO, slapping them in the face, swift trip for being a grindylow, then another attack for the bleed on panther style. And if I get that panther b%+#&slap out of the way, they take a penalty to their attack, which, if it hits, I can deflect and slap them AGAIN for hilarity's sake, which by this point should give me enough to do the Boar Style 3d6 bleed damage.

I know I am hijacking your thread a bit here but this is how I've managed to work my Monk.


Erase - seriously, this one's a no-brainer later on. I mean, the roleplaying applications for this are fantastic, but the DC to remove runes is fixed and easy (DC 15 caster level check - piece of piss)

Sure, it can't remove Symbols, but everything up to that is perfectly fine.


My DM has been taking it as when the bleed occurs you roll and that's the bleed damage that it does every turn. Each additional bleeding strike allows you to reroll and if it's higher you take the higher value.

Case in point: Monk with Boar Style hits twice, roll 2d6 bleed damage. I rolled a 3 (which happens way more often than it should with 2d6 for me for some reason). Next turn, hits twice again and rends flesh, now rolling a 10 on 2d6. now the target is taking 10 bleed / turn.

Consequently, if I were to then take Belier's Bite, the total bleed would be 2d6 + 1d4.

Not sure if that's how it should work, but that's how my DM is running it, and I'm not complaining.

Appraise is for me the lowest-ranked skill on the basis that I've never used it at all in a proper manner or had it come up logically in game. I've used it to haggle down shopkeepers and stall the game, but that's about it.

My current GM keeps a list of knowledges known by each player on his PC, and he tailors his adventures to suit that, so he's done really well.


Been there with Pathfinder.

In my experience, your options are twofold:

1. Put it away for a while, move on to something else. Maybe even go outside, or something. Personally, I moved on to running a Dark Heresy game which is going well.

2. Let other people put something forward that piques your interest. A mate of mine has been running a game that involves us all being slightly toned-down members of the Monster Races - I'm playing a grindylow monk, we have a Brownie summoner, a Ratfolk, a Mite and a Goblin, and that's doing really well, I'm getting a kick out of trying something new (Boar Style + Panther Style + Grindylow Trip is great fun). I even got to make the terrible "my panther style beats your dragon style" joke to a bad guy in game last session.

Basically it comes down to being patient and letting the inspiration come to you, rather than chasing it out.

Which sounds eerily similar to something I was told regarding relationships and dating, but that's a different story for a different time.

Another thing you could be experiencing is something I nicknamed the 'Gray Area Effect'. You're getting all this information about things that are happening here there and everywhere, and you're not able to really fit your game into the world as it exists because you're not able to get enough elbow room to tell the story you want to tell.

I'm currently playing the aforementioned MoMS in a campaign that a friend is running. He's running an all-monster game (with a few adjustments to the monsters to make them all roughly equal in power), and after a split in the group, we have:
Me, playing a Grindylow Master Of Many Styles,
a Brownie Summoner (Vanilla),
a Ratfolk... something, it escapes me right now,
a Goblin Cavalier/Beast Rider,
a Gourd Leshy Druid,
and a Mite Alchemist/Rogue.

The problem is, I've never played a monk and I was hoping for some advice. Anyway, here's the character as he currently stands.

Fort +6, Reflex +6, Will +8

AC 19 (10 + 1 Size + 4 Wis + 2 Dex + 1 Monk + 1 Dodge)
CMB +6 (+5 Monk, +2 Str, -1 Size)
CMD 23 (+5 Monk + 2 Str + 2 Dex + 4 Wis + 1 Monk - 1 Size)

Acrobatics +10 (5R)
Climb +10 (5R)
Perception +12 (5R)
Stealth +17 (5R, +4 Racial, +4 Size)
Intimidate +8 (5R)
Knowledge (Religion) +8 (4R)

Feats / Specials:
1st - Boar Style
1st - Panther Style (Monk Bonus)

Extras:
> I get one free trip action each turn with an additional +4 to the attempt
> I retain my bite attack from a 'regular' grindylow.

I have a few questions:
1. When I make a full attack action, if memory serves I get my punching attack and my biting attack. Another player (who admittedly loves to cheat) mentioned that I would take a -4 on my bite attack if it came after the unarmed strike. Is this correct, and what can I do to fix this? For reference, my common tactic in this place is to dart forward, provoking as many AoOs as possible. When one of my Panther Style response strike hits, I then use my free action trip thing to attempt to trip the struck target, then make a normal unarmed strike on the possibly tripped foe. If both hit (whether or not they're tripped), then it triggers the Boar Style bleed effect.

2. Where could I go with this character? My first thought was to take Weapon Finesse and go into Duellist up until at least 3rd level, to take advantage of the higher BAB progression and to gain Enhanced Mobility, but I'm wondering if you guys can come up with something else to make this character as good as he can be.


One of my earlier ones had the players on the Plane of Fire.
Now, my group has a severe problem with staying on-topic.

So there they are, standing on the stairs of the Brass Palace, and the players have been talking about Disney.

So to shake it up, I blurred the line between what the players were saying, and what the characters were saying.

So an efreeti leaned over and asked them "What's Disney?"

And that's been said at least once in every campaign since.
