Hoping to set something up on Friday or Saturday nights that isnt a D&D clone.

I prefer Vampire, Shadowrun, Call of Cthulhu etc.

Hello I'm looking for a group to play with on Friday or Saturday nights 7:30pm to Midnight or so. I love Shadowrun and Vampire but I am open to Pathfinder, D&D and other things as well. I can go from North Seattle (Northgate) to South Everett (Payne Field). I'd be willing to run Shadowrun 2, 3, or 4th edition but will play about anything Thanks!

Interested, but I got young kids. When you have a day and time picked I might be able to fill the last seat or two (I met my wife playing 3.0) Good luck in your search.

Hi,

Myself and 1 or 2 other guys are looking to play Pathfinder (or another game) on Roll20 from 7-11pm PST on Tues, Wed, or Thus. One of us can GM if we need to but we would prefer to be players. Thanks!

[edit]could possibly start a bit earlier and doesn't have to be every week

I'm on the north end as well but not available till May, probably have to be a weeknight to.

I haven’t had the opportunity to play a detailed game yet, but everything that I’ve read points to The Riddle of Steel being a fairly deadly game. Any thoughts on this?

Its a lot like a fencing match, your only going to take 1 to 3 hits but it could be a long flight between to masters.

I heard the latest edition of shadowrun is less deadly...

Untrue. The new system actually evens out the lethality. Before most Trolls could shrug off anything but in Fourth Edition Trolls are still appropriately tough but can't shrug off bullets to the face they way they used to. I've found the lethality of Shadowrun was mostly up to the intelligence of the players. It was relatively easy to survive so long as you played it smart and didn't get in over your head, and, of course, wore armor.

I've been playing Shadowrun for years, across three of it's editions.

Ehhh its more statistically swingy. This gives a significant advantage to weapons that were laughable to a troll before. Armor is also not as good for the troll but better for the guy with body 1. The old systems had a more of a curve to them where as 4e is a linear progression if you take the averages and dont factor in swing.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Unknown Armies. I dont know about it being super deadly but fights are scary because you know someones going to die and it may be you.

WOW thread necro... geez... darn you google!

2) "old edition gamers" who remember when the bard was at best a good 5th member.

IDK 1e Bards were amazing, of course actually being one was near impossible as you had to be a Druid, Fighter, & Thief first...

If I were Paizo I would ignore D&D 5e (officially, but by all means play it so you know your competition) Focus on what you already have and release your "Baldurs Gate". Pathfinder needs to build the brand and Baldurs Gate CRPG brought many people over to D&D that perhaps knew the name but never played before. Rise of the Runelords CRPG could be great but it need to be done well. Its more important that its a solid single player game that introduces the player to Pathfinder than have all the bells and whistles of multiplayer or class options. Even if you just play a pre-generated character tailored for the story would be fine for your first CRPG out the door. You can always add multi-player or class/race selection to future games.

Pathfinder has grown on me as i find the minor tweaks to spells and feats are amazing. The classes are generally more interesting but at the same time I think I liked my wizards with a d4 hit die. SO YMMV but I started out indifferent and the more classes I play the more I can't go back to 3.5

It's all cool. However, I'm now somewhat concerned that 'the dude' may be fantastically trolling us...

Having found and read the rpg.net thread

http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?593390-PF-Barbarian-build

I think hes new and/or never actually read the rule book and just goes off what his rule lawyer says. I still say he has a point in a minor minor way. The English used in the rules could have been better. "Either" can be taken inclusively or exclusively.
ei·ther
adjective
1.
one or the other of two: You may sit at either end of the table.
2.
each of two; the one and the other: There are trees on either side of the river.

[edit] there is just the logical problem that you could never in any other situation take the bonus twice per character level but if you want to only look at this case grammatically... I can see it.

Even were you to allow a half-elf to choose the same favored class twice, you'd still only get a single favored class bonus per level. So if my favored classes are Barbarian and Barbarian, I get to choose between +1 hp, +1 skill, +1 hp, or +1 skill.

I would agree with this

I have to admit, it does not say pick two different classes. So ergo, he isn't wrong by the wording.

... come on.

What does he choose as favored classes ? Barbarian and barbarian ?
The wording is pretty clear :

Half-elves choose two favored class at first level and gain +1 hit point or +1 skill point whenever they take a level in EITHER ONE of those classeS.
It's not even just RAI here, just sweet RAW without ambiguity.

Errr I don't think its as clear as you are saying, Barbarian and Barbarian could still be classes. However I believe RAI is pick two different classes. They never use the word "different" though so I suppose one could argue the two classes could be the same... interesting.

[edit] Its sorta like buying two BMWs and saying your going to take the BMW to work.

Also traps are often considered not much of a danger, as they are normally not deadly (no GM would risk the life of someone just because of a bad roll). So you can normally just wait and heal after tripping the trap. (yes, there are exceptions)

I would... Tomb of Horrors comes to mind to, so I don't think its exceptions but I could be wrong. My biggest complaint with 3e was while they made all this wonderful overlapping they didn't make trapfinding a feat available to anyone in the core like tracking is. And they could add some rogue specific talets or feats that boost it back up in a future book

If you are a parent on this board, what is your position on gaming content when it comes to your kids, and how did you arrive there?

I believe the demographic has shifted upward. As a parent I think its completely dependent on the child, but unlike my mother I have no problems if when my son becomes 15 he wants to play a game called Vampire. While hes younger though there are some more mature RPGs out there that I would probably shy away from but as he hits his teens its more up to him. I'm not concerned with D&D, Star Wars, GURPS, and many more at any age. Sure there are some adult bits but they are bits not overall themes and its hard to censor bits.

3.5 made you always take the regular AC even vs touch attacks IIRC if your touch AC is higher than your regular AC.

I plan relationships and events then let the PCs do what they will from there. For example in relationships the kings loves his brother but his brother is tired of the king and has made plans with the goblin king to ursurp the king but the goblin king has planed to betray the bother and joined forces with a necromancer... I think you get the idea. The an even is stuff like at this day and time the brother will attack, at another day and time an earthquake happens. The story is how the PCs interact with the relationships and events.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I think you and the rogue want different things from your game. I used to play with a guy who loved to steal from party members to give the coin to an orphanage or buy fancy clothing or spent it on anything else that would make us less powerful. It was a hoot to play with him and we learned not to let him take watch at night. We also started trying to sneak past enemies rather than fighting them. I believe either one of you has to find a different group or you have to learn how to play nice together.

Step outside and start throwing rocks at random passerby's you will hit a roleplayer with every other shot. You are in the roleplay mecca of the world.

This is soo true... Check out one of the couple dozen FLGS and if that doesn't work check out penandpapergames.com, the seattle gamers assemble (yahoo group), or nearbygamers. You can try meetup.com to but be aware that they have a large number of people who say they want to join your group but never show up.

I would say HARP is a perfect fit, even the races would be easy to convert.

It was a great time at PAX, I played the Cheliax game and liked it so much I mentioned it to my wife. She and I met playing 3rd edition D&D but she hasn't really liked D&D since she found other RPGs. She played Varisia and liked it so much she went back and played Mwangi, now shes planing to run Counsel of Thieves for our gaming group. So I call that a win for Paizo as I am sure we will be buying more books, minis, and maps soon.

So I bought the map folio hoping the scale would be different so I could just print out the maps and throw minis down but its not... Of course its PDF to so I cant even re size the thing. Any ideas on what to do?

Wait... What module are you running?

Anyone know if we will see any Pathfinder demos at PAX this year? WOTC has been there the last 2 years and Steve Jackson was there last year. Wondering if Paizo is going to have a presence.

You could also look to Mutants and Masterminds and Star Wars Saga Edition for ideas on damage and the d20 system. Mutants and Masterminds has a soak roll but static hit points and Star Wars Saga has wounds.

I would go with anytime you do something that hurts your character but make the story more interesting and was in character, you get a hero point that you can then use to gain an d6 to add to any d20 roll after the d20 has been rolled.

For example your playing a curious halfling so while hanging up above the army of hobgoblins you see a curious box in a neighboring tree so although the party is back waiting for your scouting report on the hobgoblins you decided to try and grab hold of the box in the other tree... you have now taken that curiosity and turned it into something interesting.

One other thing you could do is make bad rolls cool. Come up with situations where failing your roll is a benefit or at leased a cool plot hook. Like Conan the Barbarian (film) where the guy misses and hits the column which then sends parts of it falling down that they all have to try and avoid (good guys and bad guys). Over time this will keep them from thinking that if they roll bad they will automatically have less fun.

I think your making it too complicated. I would

A. Use a different system

or

B. Just limit the # of levels one can take in spell casting classes.
