"We'll not be the ones starting any trouble," Marikel thinks to himself. He glares in the dirction of Dorn. "Or else."
Marikel notes the abundance of half-orcs on the crew and tries not to show any disdain.
"After all, they all have jobs. Even if it is on this... ship." He smirks to himself.
"Except that one..." Marikel frowns at the sight of the half-orc with the long braid cleaning his hands. " Might keep an eye out for that one."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel does as told. After a brief look about the ship ("Keelboat", he reminds himself), Marikel finds himself a public area where he can watch the shore go by and be seen by the passengers and crew. He stays to the side, out of the way but visible, with a polite nod for those that show a passing interest, and ready to be called upon for assistance or conversation.
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel nods thoughtfully, then glares at Dorn.
"We don't have any issues with a full orc until she says she'd rather hide a murderer from us for a few gold than help us stop more slaughter."
He turns back to Melira.
"Miss Melira, I would like to apologise to you. I was unaware that Gashnakh was looking for information on our behalf. I'm very grateful that you took such initiative. I do understand that my ways are not always the best way, a lesson that Miss Alicia often likes to teach me. Now that I'm aware that you have the matter in hand, I'll try to stay out of the way."
Marikel meets Melira's eyes.
"Thank you, and I'm sorry for my recent attitude."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel examines Melira.
"Yes, it appears I need him like I need you. And yet, for someone who had part in the deaths of a lot of people, Gorewillow doesn't seem to be lacking in assistance."
Marikel takes a step towards Melira.
"People like you and Bloodtusk think that if you don't ask questions you won't have to live with the consequences of your actions. But I've seen those consequences. I've watched a small town mourn its dead, people grieve for lost loves, parents risk life and limb to protect those they care for. You think you'll be fine if you mind your own business but you're belief that your associates will do the same for you is mistaken. After all, you'd sell any of them for the right price. Gorewillow would strangle you to death with his own bare hands if he believed it would immortalise his name in a respectable university. So, forgive me if I'm used to working with people I trust and can rely on to do the right thing."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel glances to Melira.
"My apologies, Captain Bloodtusk. Forgive me for being unaware of your formalities. Have you any other rules concerning your boat? Or is this a ship?"
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Hi all. Apologies for the quiet. Life has been a little spicy of late. We were flooded out of our house for a week and still don't have power. Our house is on 3 meter stumps (10 foot for you yanks) and the waters came up to about 2.8 meters. Everything under the house is trashed, but everything in the house is still okay, like my Pathfinder books and my RPG and board game collections. :-)
And, you know, I've been pretty slack before that too. Will try and update more often in future.
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel nods politely.
"Greetings Mr Bloodtusk. I'm Marikel and these are my companions. We're seeking passage to Freedom Town and possibly beyond. We're searching for a felon, one Skreed Gorewillow. I don't suppose you've seen this person of late?"
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
"Let's hurry up and get back to Melira and see if that ferry has turned up. We weren't gone for long but Desna seems to have little time for me of late. Most of my life actually..."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
"Well done everyone," Marikel looks about and nods to Tama.
"A pleasure working with you. Farewell."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
"You honour us. I pray Trunau will never have need of your battle prowess but I fear that day will actually come too soon."
Marikel bows his head to Tama.
"If you'll forgive us, we'll do a quick search of the area," Marikel nudges Alicia, "and be on our way. Our mission requires some degree of urgency."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel rushes to Alicia's side.
"Is everyone okay?"
He looks to Dorn then back to Alicia.
"Stay close. I can heal everyone."
He looks to Tama.
"I can heal your horse too. Bring it over."
Marikel swings his sword low and a burst of healing energy flows over all his companions around him.

Marikel, are you wearing this armor?
Not unless I'm 5th level- I don't have the Heavy Armour Proficiency feat yet. I intend to, but I'm currently wearing this nice Masterwork Breastplate.

Marikel eyes the pathway underfoot and begins to make his way carefully down the slope.
(Move down the path... 20' to... N2 I guess. :-)

Marikel jogs up and looks to Mahath.
"Good thinking. We'll need all the help we can get."
He touches the pommel of his sword against his shield and with a qucik prayer a radiant light emerges from the shield to engulf him before fading. Another prayer and with a wave of his sword, holy power and a sense of resolve wash over the party.
(Cast shield of faith on myself and bless on the party)

"It's not more important. That doesn't mean it's not important."
Marikel looks to the others.
"Tama did help us. But we don't want fall further behind. But I don't want a pile of debts behind us. And it'll be dangerous."
Marikel smirks. "Again."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel frowns. "We're kind of in a rush. Is there another way of discharging our debt?"
His shoulders slump.
"How far away is the ferry?" he asks resignedly.
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
"Probably something to do with the drake," mutters Marikel who has been following Melira's instructions without complaint. "I'm not a strong believer in coincidence."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
"Well, it appears we have little choice if we are to be reacquainted with Gorewillow. Let's move."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Yup. Marikel's spells are ready.
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel shakes his head and scowls.
"Will-o-wisps? Great. Why would Gorewillow go through a swamp? Is that where you're taking us, or do you have a better solution?"
He hefts his pack and with a glance to the others he follows Melira.
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
"Hmm, some of the first good news we've had for a while. Let's get moving while Melira tells us more about the hospitable sounding Ghostlight Marsh."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel glances over to the others and nods.
"Very good. We want to move as quickly as possible now that we're on the right track."
He stands and stretches then reaches for his sword and half pulls it from the eldritch sheath. The blade is razor sharp once more and, with a slight shake of his head followed by a satisfied nod, Marikel slides the sword back again. He eases back into his armour for his watch then takes a brief look around to ensure all is as it should be. Between rounds of the campsite and scanning the dark exterior for signs of trouble, he feeds the campfire and sets about readying his things for an early departure.
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
"Not reassuring," Marikel grumbles over his shoulder.
"I don't want to be right about this artifact."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel frowns.
"We're not in this to make a profit. Gorewillow has shown his eagerness to kill innocents for a few gold. We're going to get that item back and prevent any further deaths."
Marikel gestures to his companions.
"We were all among the carnage as orcs from the Twisted Nail attacked Trunau and brave people died in the defence of their friends and families. Each of us here accounted for multiple attackers and Miss Alicia even slew a Cave Giant."
Marikel stands and paces.
"If that was just a ruse to find this artifact, there's no accounting for how many more lives may be lost. We believe it belonged to an ancient warlord who united the monsters of Belkzen. But we've seen dead things rise in their tomb and we all know who mastered such evil powers in centuries past. If this item can do this neither Trunau nor Freedom Town will be safe. Maybe not even neighbouring nations."
Marikel start to unpack his gear in a corner while continuing.
"We stay the night and set out in the morning. You, Miss Melira, may wish to prioritise your assistance to us if you still want a future in this area."
Marikel settles down to sleep.
"Wake me for the final watch."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel nods.
"Well, if you can work with the likes of Gorewillow, we shouldn't be too much of a hassle for you. What was he doing anyway?"
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Are you gonna swap the Alicia and Ansha avatars? :-)
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
"Greetings," Marikel nods at the orc before looking uncertainly at the snake and settling for, "Hi."
Marikel offers round some more food.
"As we'll be working together I'd like to know your abilities and your information on Gorewillow and his client. If we all know who can handle what we'll know when to help and when to stay out the way. Obviously, I'll go first."
He smiles benignly.
"I'm Marikel and I'm a... cleric of Iomedae. Obviously she grants me healing powers but the rest of my abilities are of a more martial nature. Her blessings grant me weapons, grant me shielding and grant me power to command my enemies. And I can bestow some of these blessings on my allies."
Marikel looks rather pleased with himself.
"But I am aware of my limitations. I don't work magic, I don't know the land and I'm not talented with a bow."
He looks round the group patiently.
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel bites into some dried meat and chews thoughtfully.
"Let's start with Gorewillow. You said you know where he is. If you can lead us to him safely your services should no longer be required. If you help us apprehend him, I'll pay your standard fee a third time. If he's not there, I'll only pay your standard fee plus half again, with an option to retain your services should they be required."
Marikel nods thoughtfully.
"Is there anything you'd like to add?"
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel scowls.
"Mister Dorn, we won't be going anywhere until the morning. And while it is of vital import that we catch Gorewillow, if Miss Melira here is his accomplice then her assistance would be less likely to improve the situation in our favour."
Marikel turns back to Melira.
"I'd much rather drag Gorewillow back to face justice than yourself but you cannot deny what the easier path would be for my battle hardened companions and myself."
He smiles grimly.
"However, as Mister Dorn points out we can easily pay. If your talents are as good as you say, you will be well compensated. We could double your usual fee. But only for tangible results."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel frowns and tries not to let his surprise show at the turn of events.
"If you were to help us, perhaps your sins could be forgiven."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel slowly takes out some rations as he talks.
"We're looking for some kidnappers who were operating in this area. In particular a Skreed Gorewillow, a common piece of scum who fancies himself a scholar. He traded a young girls life for an artifact that we suspect has deadly powers. To make matters worse, we believe he may be working with the same forces that recently orchestrated the attack on Trunau."
Marikel takes a few bites of food before offering it round, but continues his story.
"The girl heard her captors talking about some forts in the area where their accomplices were hiding. That narrows down their location to only a few months of searching. Unfortunately, I fear the potential risk is well worth the investment of time."
He broods only a moment.
"I'm Marikel. My companions here are Mister Mahath, Mister Dorn and Miss Alicia. I encourage them to interrupt me, or they never get a chance to speak."
He smiles warmly at the others.
"What's your story? If you don't mind me asking, of course."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel makes his way in, hands away from his weapons but his holy symbol of Iomedae visible.
"We understand your caution in these dangerous times. It was long ago that the crusaders held these forts and brought peace to the area. They're long gone now but perhaps peace will return one day."
He smiles grimly.
"No time soon, sadly. It was only a week or so ago that Trunau itself was attacked by a host of orcs. As before Trunau was victorious but we believe something has deliberately stirred up trouble in the area. Have you any news of recent happenings?"
Marikel makes himself comfortable.
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
"My thoughts exactly, Miss Alicia."
Marikel makes his way with the others to the fort and knocks at the blocked entrance.
"Greetings. My name is Marikel. We're travellers from Trunau. We mean no harm. Would you treat with us?"
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Even Marikel gives a small smile when the fort finally comes into view but his frown returns quickly enough at Dorn's words.
"Perhaps it would be better if we were to be invited as guests," he suggests.
"But if we're really lucky, we might take that Gorewillow scum unawares."
He turns and looks ruefully at Alicia.
"If we may impose once more upon your grace, Miss Alicia, could you please determine the nature of these residents that we may know how to treat with them?"
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
"If you please, Miss Alicia."
Marikel leads his band onwards.
"There are several old forts in the area. We're checking this one mostly for the sake of completeness. It's closest and least likely to be where Gorewillow and his scum are heading. But they may have used it whilst drawing their plans against Trunau. It's not too far across the skittermounds to the other forts then. But that would be certain death at this time of year, Miss Varvatos informed me. So to check the other forts we'll need to ferry down the Kestrel, then back up the Esk. We may want to check out Freedom Town to see if Gorewillow is actually known there, or if it was yet another of his lies."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel stretches and drags his gear out to the horses. "Hopefully we'll find more information there than just some insect carcasses."
He takes a drink from his own waterskin and saddles his horse.
"When little Miss Sawyer described this place as a dump I thought she was exaggerating. Perhaps there's still some hope she won't turn out like her father. I'm sorry if we've wasted time. I thought it best to leave no stone unturned. Let's go."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel grunts. "Well, if there's nothing else to find here, we may as well stay overnight. Tomorrow, we'll head to the source of the Kestrel and check out the western end of the Hordeline. If we find nothing there, then we head back down the river."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
"What about outside?" Marikel grumbles.
"We now know they were here. Whoever they were. But that doesn't help us find where they've gone. And if the original inhabitants have been murdered, we should probably find their bodies and advise Trunau."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
You? Difficult? Inconceivable! :-) <3
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel purses his lips.
"Hmm. Let's all take a closer look. Might someone be returning soon? Or recently abandoned, do you think? If the latter, maybe Miss Tama would like a better home."
Marikel makes his way over to the building looking into the distance about them.
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
Marikel dismounts and takes the reins of Alicia's horse.
"Miss Alicia, would you be so kind as to take a quiet look around the area while we secure the horses here. Please do be careful and alert us if there's anyone... or anything... about."
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
"We should certainly head there. There may even be farmstead we can stay at ."
Marikel does not smile.
hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4
"The creature we killed may have been the spawn," Marikel mutters.
"But we should certainly move on quickly. Mister Mahath, I can tend that wound over the next few days and ensure it ejects any foreign material. But for now, we should move on."
(Remember my Touch of Law for a roll of 11 plus 10 healing for a 21 Heal check :-)

Marikel clambers inelegantly up the bank and rushes to Mahath's side.
"Mister Dorn, come closer. I can heal you both."
Marikel mutters to Iomedae for certainty and examines the wound Marikel received for foreign bodies. (Use Touch of Law for a roll of 11 plus 10 healing for a 21 Heal check)
"I believe Mr Mahath will be fine. The poison doesn't kill, just paralyses. Wasps prefer live prey so their eggs have fresh food when they hatch."
