Brushing his hands off and tucking the crowbar away into the outside straps of his pack, Leon looks in the direction Tim points. "Hmm. Jevon and and I didn't see anything when we looked around a moment ago. If they were hidden, why reveal themselves now?" Frowning, he nodded to himself. "I don't like the feel of it. How long until the column reaches the position of the smoke? Maybe we can move up on their position unseen and get a look at them. If they are ambushers, we might be able to turn the tables on them."

Leon shrugs at Baster's question. "Honestly, M'Lord, I hadn't ever planned on laying my hands on it myself. I just wanted to help. To me the most important thing is to make sure the wrong people don't get their hands on it. I'm going to walk up that big hill there and take a look over the land. People have been here and may still be camped nearby, but we'd never know from down in there. Feel like joining me?"

My whole life I did things because I was supposed to. It was easy. I knew what things needed to be done because they were obvious. Fields need planting. Crops need harvesting. The cow needs milking. By the time all the obvious things were done there wasn't any time for anything else. Definitely no time to worry about lost crowns and old quests. Now though... What things are obvious to a seer? Do I act on them even if I don't understand them? I want a drink..."

"Looks that way." Leon said with a shrug. "I guess it makes a certain amount of sense. We don't know exactly where the rest of the force is, but we do know where they are headed. Taking the other route might put us behind them if they've made good time. Not real reason not to take the route straight to where we were headed in the first place. It's not like this way is any more or less dangerous than that way, right?"

As a character, Leon would rather take the slow and safe route. That's the kind of guy he is. As a player I think getting swept away by a storm and still managing to get to our destination ahead of the main force is awesome. Story-wise I'd much prefer that. Leon doesn't have much of a sense of direction, so right now he doesn't even know that there even are two choices. If someone he trusts to know where they're going points them down the faster route, he'll probably never know any better. :)

I'm going to go ahead and jump over the preliminary stuff like getting water from the lake and figuring out who's carrying up what supplies. If it needs to be discussed we can do it in Discussion. Hope you don't mind GM. :) Leon walked at the head of the column letting those more suited handle the scouting. He was quiet and tried to keep his eyes scanning the horizon, but he was feeling introspective. If anyone had told me a year ago what my life would be today, I'd have laughed in their face. Hope gone. The farm gone. Traveling with elves and dwarves. Befriending bug-eyed madmenn who command things out of nightmares. Facing dragons. Falling out of the sky. This is madness. What am I doing here? Blinking, he glanced back at Ithriel. How in the world did he figure out where we needed to go to get on track again? He's mostly blind. How'd he even figure out which way north was? I guess that's no more amazing than knitting flesh with a touch. I don't think I'll ever get used to this. Sighing he laughed to himself. Just my luck I finally buy the horse of my dreams and then I'm separated from him the next day. And then I have to walk through the middle of nowhere with a hundred pounds on my back.

"Amazing." Leon says with a grin, only wasting a moment on being impressed before his adaptive pragmatism took in the new situation. Giving a few quick directions to the newly healed group, he pointed out where they had gear and supplies staged to leave. Somberly he looked to Endrian and Ithriel. "I suppose all that's left to do before we leave is hold funeral services."

Looking at Ithriel with surprise and a bit of wonder, Leon raises an eyebrow. "You sure? Alright. Can you check the wounded and give me an idea of how long until they'll be able to travel? We need to figure out if we should head to that cave or just build litters now." How could he know which way to go after that storm? I guess it's silly to ask how an elf knows anything. He's an elf. He's probably forgotten more than I'll ever know.

Don't worry about that with me. Everyone has my permission to assume non-combat actions from Leon. He's a pretty helpful guy and I think everyone has a good enough handle on his character to be able to describe him pretty well. Besides, it's really fun to see how other people write you, and what you look like through someone else's eyes.

Leon blinks and shakes his head in amazement, then shrugs. "Well, we didn't get enough done to be able to get away from here tonight, and now it's too dark. We're going to have to stay the night here. That means a double watch all night in case more trouble shows up." "Tomorrow we are going to bury the fallen, haul supplies to the waterline, build shelter and move the wounded. We're camping there until everyone's well enough to travel."

Was round 1 the surprise round? Round 2 Leon recovered from his momentary panic and drew his sword and shield, standing over Endrian's fallen form as the bear towered over them. As Ithriel's healing energy washed over him, knitting up the last of the wounds he had taken during the crash, he steeled himself to take the next hit so others wouldn't have to. Seeing Endrian wake, Leon covered his friend with his shield as he rose, stepping to the side to make room. Driving his sword forward in a powerful thrust, he prayed it would get the beast's attention. Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Probably not...

There's a lot of reasons someone might be too surprised to react properly. The game isn't trying to model them all. The meta-game just decides the basics of how your character reacts. It's up to you to decide and describe why. I'm totally with you in terms of the initiative rules not handling two boxers in a ring who are aware of each other and ready to go. Neither of them should be flat footed, but one of them will be. In this case, I think it's completely understandable for Leon to be briefly paralyzed with fright because of a giant charging deathless bear. The rules aren't trying to treat combat realistically. Not even close. Think about it. When was the last time you thought "with a little more experience I could totally take that bear"? The rules provide a framework for the narrative. They tell you the what, not the why. If you're fighting the rules, you're going to be frustrated a lot. If you get what they are trying to do you can bend them in really impressive ways. I don't mind being flat footed. It makes the story better.
