'Khar laughs maniacally as the ghasts take off running. [b]"That's it! Run away little ghouls!" The exhilaration of victory is quickly followed by a need to rest. Unfortunately, he has to fight to keep going despite the pain and mounting exhaustion when he realizes that Tassa is being dragged away by one of the ghouls. Sprinting out the door and around the corner, charges the fleeing ghoul dragging Tassa, tearing at it in an effort to get it to let go of her.

Using another Ki to keep combat prowess up for another round

Aware that the horde of ghouls attacking him was rapidly wearing him out, 'Khar begins backing out, focusing his assault on the most wounded of the ghouls. The large were-kin snarls, slashing with tooth and fang to try to bring down his foes before they bring him down. "Snap out of it, y'lazy bastards! This'ow y'wanna go out Urick?" he growls at his paralyzed allies.

Using Combat Precognition for 1 ki. All enemies attacking 'Khar have to roll twice and take the lower roll for 1 round.

'Khar roars again at all the surrounding ghouls. "That all y'got, y'toothy sacks of flesh?" he growls. "Why y'wastin' yer time on all them? Come'n get me!" Crouching down, he focuses his keen senses on the ghouls surrounding him. Instinctively he knew things were getting bad with Urick down. Still, this was the sort of fight he'd been hoping for, so he wasn't about to back down or flee. Continuing his assault on the ghoul he'd been focusing on he slashes at it aggressively, focusing on bringing it down.

Turning briefly to Tassa he growls "Go! Will follow!"

Shouldn't 'Khar have gotten some AoO's the past couple rounds? He has 10' reach remember.

Between shaking off the pain of the ghouls' claws and fighting off the paralysis, 'Khar seems not to be listening to Ila's call to coordinate with Tassa. Instead he focuses his efforts on the ghoul he'd hit before, continuing to assault it savagely.

Will use Intimidating Force on the next attack that would hit

Intimidating Force:

Intimidate: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23
Just as the ghoul attacks 'Khar turns to face it and unleashes a savage roar, daring the ghoul to follow through with its attack.

"Hahaha, sounds like y'like it more than y'hate it," 'Khar says responding to the professor. "Time t'have some fun!" Filling the room with his roar, his body begins to grow in size even further than he'd been originally, growing several extra feet in height. Brandishing his claws, he grins toothily at the ghouls before him. "Time t'die..." he says as he lunges at the one to his side.

The stench inside is overpowering for 'Khar's sense of smell, but he manages to power through it anyway. He was pretty sure he'd never smelled anything quite so terrible, though, even the festering meat they used to feed the monsters in the arena. "Ugh, th'smell," 'Khar grumbles. "Better off gettin' rid of whatever is makin' this stench."

He makes note of the two groups preparing to attack them but stays calm to avoid giving away that he is aware of their presence.

If there is a lot of darkness inside the house (like quite a few rooms ahead) I'd like to swap to see-in-darkness instead of extra move speed.

"More fun this way anyway," 'Khar says before taking his shirt off and tying it around his pouch. Focusing inward his muscles begin to bulge, and within moments his skin begins to grow the striped orange fur marking him as were-tiger kin. In a deeper, growling voice he adds, "Lets beat the answer outta them now."

Did 'Khar take 36 or 38 damage? Also, should put him up at rage puts him up +4 wounds (total and current), which might put him at not-staggered depending on whether he took 36 or 38. Need to know if that changes my condition to decide what to do.

'Khar roars loudly as the bug pierces him with its stinger, leaving a gaping hole in his gut. He looks down and brings his furred hand down to the hole, and lifting it up dripping in his own blood. He begins laughing, though it's clear the blow nearly killed him outright. "That's why I came'ere!" he sputters out, coughing up blood as he does, "...finally a true monster!"

He roars at the bug again, fighting off both the blood loss from the wound, as well as whatever magic was attempting to slow his mind. The adrenaline from his rage kept him from feeling the wound directly, and the extra rush from nearly dying gives him enough strength to gather himself together.

Forgot, but can I assume 'Khar spent a round as we approached to regain maneuvers?

'Khar is more than a little surprised when Tassa disappears, appearing next to the mayor. "Need t'learn that trick," he says, thinking aloud.

He rolls his eyes at Urick's proclamation of judgement upon the mayor and chuckles. "Don't think words are gonna kill'm, Urick, much less that shot," he growls snarkily. He heads off after Tassa, eager to fight the mayor before she has a chance to kill him with those tentacles of hers.

With the weaver dead, 'Khar seems to calm down, his frenzied movements again relaxed and deliberate. He ignores the peasant next to him for a moment, looking around for the scarecrow or anything else that'd joined the fray. When he sees the construct stumbling around on fire, he just sighs. Turning to face the peasant, he crouches down slightly to look the crazed man in the eyes. "Don't suppose ya are some kinda monster? Prolly not, huh?" he asks, sounding rather skeptical. Retracting his claws, he backhands the farmer, his strength now diminished with his rage gone. "Get outta here, chump, 'fore I tear your throat out."

'Khar growls at Tassa as she appears behind the weaver and envelops her in tentacles. "Takin' th'fun outta it," he grumbles. Still, that registers as a minor annoyance compared to when the spider turns its back to him. "You were fightin' ME," he growls as his form seems to grow slightly larger and more fearsome. He slashes at the spider with one of his claws, "Thought ya were gonna make a sacrifice outta ME!" he shouts, his anger rising. "

His shouts come coupled with an onslaught of claws and bites, the rage and indignation at being ignored driving him to tear the weaver to pieces.

"Gettin' things started then," he says, his eyes seemingly focusing on nothing, as he takes off his top and tosses it to the side quickly.

'Khar's grin seems to waver between his typical expression and a grimace of pain for a moment, and suddenly his muscles and skin begin to swell. He crouches down as his form grows rapidly, and his heavily scarred skin begins to sprout orange and black fur everywhere. When he finally stands back up, he seems to have grown a few inches, his form now that of an anthropomorphic tiger. The were-tiger stretches his arms, his joints cracking as the tension of the transformation is released. His eyes, now yellow slits, seem almost to shine in the low-light. He flexes his hands, points of his claws just slightly poking out from within their sheaths. "Gonna charge th'spider," he whispers in a growling baritone.

Standing at an imposing 6'5", 'Khar paces impatiently as the Judge explains the situation. He wasn't exactly convinced this was worth the time. Some tax collector gone missing hardly seemed like the best way to find something challenging to fight. To top it off, he had bought slightly nicer clothes at the urging of Urick. It was all tiresome, but greying half-elf had earned 'Khar's respect, and seemed to have good instincts about this sort of thing.

He glances around at the others in the room, not certain why they needed so many. Still, even split among them the money would be sufficient to pay for more than a few nights worth of drinking. 'Khar then turns his attention to the other greying man in the room, his curiosity piqued as he concurs that there might be some sort of rare creature involved in the disappearance. It would certainly be far more interesting than the more probable case that the people simply weren't interested in paying their taxes. Back on Jalmeray the tax collectors had usually been heavily escorted for precisely that reason.

The others who had arrived were... not what he expected. It seemed more like a group of teachers from the university had shown up than a group of people intending to hunt some kind of monster. Of the group, however, one of them set him off. He sniffs at the air, trying to determine what it is about the Varisian girl that rubs him the wrong way. Unable to put a finger on it, he turns his attention back to the Judge.

"S'we hunt'm down and bring'm back one way or another. Taxes to boot, yeah?" he says in a gravelly baritone. "Sounds easy enough."

I've been looking at it quite a bit, seeing what other people have done with it. Overall, I like the system. It makes sense that two 10th level fighters with different con have the same vigor, because it's a skill thing. Con should make you last longer through the day, in terms of wounds, but also you should be able to last more fights vigor-wise due to good endurance. This is where the current wounds and vigor system is lacking I think.

The best tweak I've seen for this is to add Second Wind as an ability that allows you to take a 5 min break to regain some of your Vigor. Characters can do this a number of times per day equal to their Con mod, which means that high Con characters can have a longer workday, but their ability to handle combat in a single 3-4 round fight is the same as someone with high con. This makes sense when you consider that most people can muster 20-30 seconds of fairly intense physical effort. It's the recuperation time that changes as you build up stamina.

As far as vigor recovered goes, I've seen half per rest, but I tend to think it should be lower. Con on a d8 hitdie character is worth 1/8 HP per con mod. Someone with +4 con mod gains 50% extra HP. Now having extra HP all at once is more valuable than having extra vigor that you can only access after a 5 min rest, so I think having each one restore 1/4 of your vigor is pretty reasonable. That means someone with +4 con mod has roughly 2x the vigor of someone with +0.

Negative con bonuses I'd probably apply to the amount of vigor you gain with a night's rest. You start off at 100%, so -1 would be 75%, -2 50%, etc. This works well, because if you're at -4 or -5 con mod, you're pretty much dead anyway :P

Edit: Of course this doesn't handle rocket tag, but the solution for that is likely to have high level (11+) feats that allow you to start using second wind mid-fight.

Gyrfalcon: Khar's definitely not taking either, but it seems like James's bard/occultist has it and bluff. That said, it doesn't hurt to have a couple people with diplomacy and bluff in case one messes up, or to help with aid-another checks.

Overall the group looks pretty balanced if that's what we wind up with. No 9-level arcane caster, but that's less of a problem than lacking someone who can at least do some downtime heals, and I think we've got that covered.

James,

The way I approach it is to first figure out what your character's main class lacks that your character should have. Weaknesses that don't fit, or abilities/utility they are lacking that would fit the theme. I then begin looking for classes that fill that gap and play around with the build to see if it makes sense.

For example, K'ra should be believably a great hunter. Bloodrager fit what I wanted out of him primarily, but it lacked the skills and utility I wanted him to have. Specifically, it left him bad at stealth, perception and the other skills that hunters should be good at. Picking up Rogue upped his skill points, and gave him sneak attack which fit really well with the "stalking predator" theme I wanted. Later I tweaked it to go for stalker as it has some really nice options for intimidation, which was also essential to the character, as well as buffs to the various skills he'd be using to accomplish his goals.

I'm not familiar with Occultist, but assuming it's a psychic caster, does the character excel in casting beyond that? Is it a major portion of their capabilities? Do they instead have more skills or combat ability? Answering those questions will narrow down what you want out of a second class. Consider also that gestalt opens up the possibility of making use of some of the more interesting prestige classes that would normally be rather limiting (sorc + dragon disciple, arcane trickster, etc.), as your second class gives you stability and stuff to do while your prestige class comes online.

Yup, some magic-ish effects from path of war, but they're pure melee otherwise. K'ra (The Bloodrager/Stalker) will be focused on the skills a hunter would need (Perception, Stealth, Survivial, Acrobatics), and heavy intimidation.

Here are my questions:

Character Questionnaire:

1. What's your characters economic situation, and the economic situation of their family? A desperately poor character with a rich family tells a very different story than a desperately poor character with a poor family.:

K’ra’s was raised in extreme poverty in a remote corner of the island of Jalmeray. His father kept them mostly hidden, and scavenged or stole what he could to help make ends meet. As a child K’ra also resorted to stealing from time to time, to help fill his own belly. By contrast, his grandmother is the head of one of the wealthiest noble houses on the island.

2. What does your character look like? Describe their fashion sense, their hair, their eyes and skin. Is there a reason they dress or act the way they do? How do they carry themselves when they don’t think anyone is looking?:

K’ra wears a ragged, blood-stained leather armor he ‘acquired’ from an elf he ambushed after his escape from Arena in the Shackles. Beneath the armor he is bare-chested, and he bears various tattoos and scars from his time as a slave and gladiator. The scars extend all over his body, and he makes a point to display them as evidence of all the fights he has survived. Three slashes cross his right eye, which has glazed over white from the wound, leaving it useless. His tanned skin and black hair give away his Vudrani heritage when he is in human form. When he changes shape, his scars remain, but his fur is the ruddy orange with the dark stripes of a weretiger-kin, with white fur lining his chest. The scars he has suffered are clearly visible, the skin there no longer capable of producing fur.

K’ra is forever scanning the area around him. He has the bearing of a predator, derived naturally from his blood and honed through years in the gladiatorial arena in Arena and in the Mwangi Jungles after escaping the Shackles. He looks down on anyone who is not a warrior, and he usually does little to hide the sneer on his face when dealing with such weaklings. Around other warriors, however, he is competitive bordering on jovial, seeing fighting and hunting as a sport to be relished. Those who fight well earn his respect, and those he considers his equals he can even develop camaraderie with.

3. Where was your character born? In Ustalav? Somewhere else? Why did they move to Ustalav, if they were born elsewhere?:

K’ra was born on the island of Jalmeray. He was exiled from the island after failing to kill his grandmother, one of the rajas of the island who is secretly also a Rakshasa. Amused by his attempt to reclaim his place as scion of her house, she briefly taught him to fight before selling him to slavers looking for gladiators for the matches in Arena in the Shackles. There he fought for many years, clawing his way up the ranks one fight at a time, taking advantage of his weretiger abilities and his innate rage to help him. In time he even began to harness the abyssal taint he had inherited from his grandmother alongside the weretiger blood of his grandfather.

Though he learned much during his time there, including how to instill fear in even the mightiest foes, he eventually grew bored of the arena, desiring a chance to set out in the world to fight bigger foes. He managed to escape during one of the matches, using his innate prowess to jump into the stands, and fled the Shackles into the Mwangi Expanse. During his time living in the Jungles there, he ran into a group of adventurers who told tales of the horrors present in Ustalav. A true opportunity for a monster hunter. Of especial interest to him were the tales of tribes of werewolves present in the region, as they were often described as fearsome, something he seriously doubted. Given his lack of attachments and his desire to best ever greater foes in preparation for returning to defeat his grandmother, he set off for Ustalav.

4. How did your character become whatever class they are or learn the skills they have?:

His childhood taught him how to steal and take from those when he needed. Ambushing travelers and roughing up the weak for food was more his style than outright stealing, but he was quite adept at skulking about as well. In the arena he developed those skills further towards killing, developing a fighting style based on intimidation and the brute strength that flowed through his veins.
In addition, the magic and hatred he had inherited from his grandmother were ever-present, manifesting in his bloodrage, which he used quite aggressively.

5. What does your character do for a living? How did they get into doing that?:

K’ra doesn’t do things for a living. While he will use money when needed, he is perfectly capable of hunting to live, and enjoys living in the wilderness. Nevertheless, in order to hunt monsters it helps to interact with people, as rumors and the like are an excellent means of guiding him to his next challenge.

6. What is their personality like?:

His personality varies from jovial to cold, and almost always arrogant. Much of how he interacts with others is dependent on how capable he sees them as. Fighters command respect, most others receive his derision, unless they are obsequious towards him. He responds well to flattery and will boast about his battles if given any chance to do so.

7. If your character is religious, explain why and how. If not, there may be a reason for that as well.:

His father was an Iroran, though he himself is not religious, seeing those who depend upon the gods for power as weak. Despite this, his behavior is actually rather Iroran, as he believes strongly in self-perfection, and much of his disdain for the weak comes from seeing it as a personal failure. The strong are strong because they strive for it, the weak are weak because they do not. It is a cruel and unfeeling interpretation of Iroran beliefs.

8. Much of the campaign will involve traveling all over Ustalav and foiling the plots of various horrifying monsters. Why does your character care about doing this? Is he an Ustalav patriot, a Pharasman undeath hunter, a monster slayer for sport, or something else?:

K’ra is a hunter for sport, without a doubt. His goal isn’t to gain fame or wealth. It is to prove himself in battle after battle, until he is capable of returning to Jalmeray to claim his noble heritage and kill his grandmother. Even with that goal, he cares more about the fact he is owed it than the wealth or prestige that goes with it. Nor does he resent or harbor hatred for his grandmother. he is merely the ultimate challenge he has before him, the mount he wishes to summit in his search for perfection.

9. What are your character's moral lines? What would they never do? What can they not stand by and watch? What will they always take advantage of?:

K’ra has little in the way of morality, though he sees little point in slaughtering the weak. He has no taste for human flesh--though he enjoys the taste of blood when fighting—so the weak are not food to him. Ideally, they should just shut up and stay out of his way, allowing him to take what he desires. Still, laws and society exist and can be useful to him, so he sees little point in breaking laws just to spite them.

Foes who slaughter the weak or helpless anger him, and he will intervene to slay the such foes, though he draws the line at that. Once he has slain them he moves on, for his objection was not to the slaying of the weak or innocent, but merely to the fact that someone would waste time on them when they could be fighting someone capable.

So settled on monster-hunter Vudrani-origin Skinwalker (Fanglord) Rogue(Bandit)/Bloodrager(Rageshaper) who came to Ustalav to kill werewolves (and other interesting monsters) for fun and profit.

Will write up a back story and questionnaire when I get some time today or tomorrow.

Edit: Gyrfalcon - having a character who struggles against and doesn't openly display their beastly nature would be an awesome contrast to K'ra who embraces it and wears it openly :o

Also, if anyone wants to be partners with K'ra for backstory purposes, he totally wouldn't have issues with a partner to compete against/kill stuff with.
