I have an idea I think could work well. Skill synergies should work like Aid Another. Basically you roll the first skill check against DC 10 (possibly there could be more difficult DCs if the skills are less connected) and if you succeed you get a +2 bonus on the second. Which skills synergize is up to the DM.

The probelm I have with this system is that I always seem to roll a 20 on the first check and a 1 on the second.

Skill synergies are a great idea but i am not sure that having to roll another check just to add a bonus is the way forward. We have a current house rule in our game that gives you +2 for 5 ranks, +3 for 10 and so on. that way the more you know the more you can apply it to something else.

Alright, how about this one...

I had a lovely brunch with Jesus Christ,
He said "Two words about innanity: Fundamental Christianity"
The food was very nice, but then He had to go and die for my sins
and stick my ass with the check.

Show me a hero
And I'll write you a tragedy
Go near an open window

So if you're looking for a good time,
And you're prepared to pay the price.
Fifteen quid is all she asks for,
Everybody's got their vice.

If you're waiting for a long time,
For the rest to do their piece.
You can tell her that you know me,
and you might even get it free.
So any time you're down the East End,
don't you hesitate to go,
You can take my honest word for it,
she'll teach you more than you can know.

Charlotte isn't it time you stopped all this mad life.
Don't you ever think about the bad times.
Why do you have to live this way.
Do you enjoy the lay or is it the pay.

Sometimes when you're strolling down the avenue,
The way you walk, it makes men think
of having you.
When you're walking down the street,
Everyone stops and turns to stare, at you.

of course fifteen quid was worth a bit more back then than it is now...

Depends mostly on the type of death. There has been good number of deaths which make sense, sometimes resulting from my character's own actions...not all of them particularly heroic (getting shot by another PC who then discreetly buries your corpse in the swamp and steals everything you owned is not heroic, but it was realistic in the context and rather memorable death...and I am first to admit that I am at least partially to blame for that).

When the character dies I make another one. That's how it goes.

My character in AoW was recently killed by Ilthane, fortunately he was raised from the dead again... just when he was getting into his stride as well... i guess it goes to show that you should never think your character is immortal! i also remember in an old 1st ed game i had a fighter character. we were using the natural age of death rules from the DMG, rolled in secret by the DM, and he died at the age of 24! massive heart attack and then run over by the wagon he was riding on... i was not a happy bunny at that but could accept the death of the character to the dragon... i guess as it has been said it all depends on the circumstances.

Last night, my 3rd level dragon shaman was unexpectantly pasted by an orc shaman/barbarian. Two...TWO!...natural 20s in a row. Crit and confirmed. Battle axe...3x damage. Went from 20 to -15.

So, I have to admit here that I do not deal as well with my character getting killed as I would like to. I'm 37, so I would like to think I'm mature enough to say "Ah, shucks. That was fun, though!" and roll up another character. However, I don't. I think I pout quite a bit, actually. And that sort of embarrasses me.

I think the issue is because I haven't had very many characters die in a game. I suppose that one gets used to it after "X" number of character deaths? Also, I tend to invest quite a bit of myself in figuring out how to roleplay said character. Not quite acting, but more of getting into a mindset. And the longer I play that character, the more invested.

So, I'm curious how other folks feel when their beloved character goes below -10.

I can hardly blame you for not 'handling it well'. I would go mad if my 3rd level character died due to 2 natural 20s in a roll!

we used to use a rule that if you scored to natural 20's and a hit your character was killed outright. sadly this meant that one of my friends had his 12th level fighter/mage killed by a very lucky, bog standard hobgoblin... like something from OoTS! poor Mav, he was never the same after that!

First off, Kendrick's new one (sorry bout wrong spelling in other post ;) is off last year's TOP SELLING Christmas album Twisted M-F'ing Christmas. Saw them do "Silver Bells" in Oklahoma last summer, still awesome band! I still have no idea who the other one is...and I know I probably should, Phil Lynott passed in 86, and I think Randy California passed close to then? Either of those guys's bands?

Next is Luke's newest one. It was this line "My yellow in this case is no so mellow. ", though its supposed to be "NOT so mellow", anyway that was what tipped it off - Hendrix "Axis: Bold as Love". That dude was a genius. I made the trip to Seattle about 12-13 years ago (after the Singles movie came out with Matt Dillon laying beside Hendrix's grave) and had to visit that spot too. Got there and saw how they have to keep replacing the sod around the site because of the foot traffic. Then it got weird, because I realized it was a human under there not just "Hendrix"...had to leave after that and go sit down for a while. I have some Tull cds, and while I can claim Ive listened to "The Passion Play" twice, Im not usually paying that much attention to the lyrics. Still love the heavier sounds they were making on Songs from the Wood and Heavy Horses, though.

And...weirdness abounds. Taliesin and Valegrim both reference sharks in their entries, right after I talk about the one that noe one would know - which is a song by Shark Island! Wow! My last one was "Get Some Strange" from those guys' Law of the Order cassette.

how about:
A home for fleas
A hive for the buzzin bees
A nest for birds
There ain't no words
For the beauty, the splendor, the wonder
Of my...

sorry bud, neither of those! i've been listening to twisted christmas and a very metal christmas all week and getting strange looks from the customers as they come in for their gear... here is another poser for you...

Burning, looting, raping, shooting,
Burning, looting, raping, shooting,
A burning, looting, raping and a shooting,
Burning, looting, raping and a shooting,
All this I'd do I'll kill for you.

Oh c'mon pretty baby won't you take my hand,
Or come and f*ck the singer in a rock and roll band,
Oh baby baby baby baby baby,
I wanna see your blood all over the land,
All this I'd do I'll kill for you.

Spoiler:
Coz I'm a warrior (warrior) of Ghengis Khan,
I'm warrior (warrior) the blood won't wash away,
I'm a warrior I'll kill my self one day

I was all of six or seven when Cobain died, but a while after the fact, I saw a photograph of a banner someone had hung on an overpass that said "Hey Kurt, Nice Shot." Kind of morbid.

Stefan--about a year and a half ago I had a fit of inspiration and typed up an extensive set of background notes on Alhaster, in which I tried to reconcile the background material in AoW with what I could find in Greyhawk canon sources (LGG/Adventure Begins/Iuz the Evil) and online in the Living Greyhawk "Bandit Kingdoms" website (which had disappeared last time I checked). I also added a ton of my own ideas in to tie the disparate threads together.

It's about an 8 page MS Word file, and I believe I posted some of it (a timeline of Alhaster's recent history detailing the circumstances of Zeech's accession) somewhere, and you might be able to dredge it out of the archives, but I'm happy to send you the whole file, which should give you some ideas to make use of or modify as you see fit. It helps if the DM gives the players enough information before the campaign starts to enable them to create something that fits. When we started our Forgotten Realms campaign our DM said our characters would be starting in Silverymoon but should not be from there. We had to do three characters each (which initially started in a previous campaign when we only had two players and now most of the other players love playing multiple characters anyway) so as a means of getting my characters together I had two travel to Waterdeep with their trades, set up in the yard of another tradesman for a while, then take on his daughter a apprentice and head off for Silverymoon where they were working (gnome illusionist locksmith, elf fighter bowyer/fletcher, human rogue apprentice locksmith) with a cart and a couple of tents that made up a travelling workshop. I even sketched out the apprentice's family and their home/workshop where the locksmith and bowyer had stayed and worked for a while.

I thought I'd done quite well. DM didn't say anything was amiss although we only discussed it briefly at the beginning of the first session. Lo and behold, when the game started our first task was to escort someone back to Waterdeep. So, when we arrived, naturally my characters were going to stay back at the apprentice's parent's place and work from there around anything else that came up. No way, said the DM. All the other characters will be staying at the Yawning Portal so your characters are too. There has been one short notice job but nothing so far that cannot be handled by meeting friends in the evening for a chat and a drink so I still have no idea why my characters are there. It rather puts a player off, so do discuss these things BEFORE you start the first adventure.

I have always written fairly detailed backgrounds for characters that i have played. these have a knack of growing as the character advances, more hooks and quirks appearing as the character developes.

in an online game i played in the DN gae special items for those players that wrote decent backstories... this might be a way to encourage it in players... the old carrot and stick approach... just be careful that the carrot aint too big!

Whoah, the pain

Skidrow's monkey business from 40 seasons... are these guys still out there??? any joy on my one from earlier? here is another snipet...

My man was workin at the seafood spot
Sellin fish n chips and dealin bags of pot
Dressed in a pirates uniform and all
Lookin like a fool headin for a fall
He was walkin home late one night godbless
Heard the scream of a woman in immediate distress
He answered the call heart beating in his chest
he headed down the alley hoping for the best
he saw the girl who was screamin her mouth beat shut
two guys standin by her bout to get f***ed up
he said you don't hit the b*tches while I'm still alive
stabbed on in the neck the other in the eye
the girl ran home told her daddy she was saved
by a pirate with a shiv and a real smooth way
the vision of the pirate would surely never fade
so she called the New York post and tried to get paid

super hero your my super hero

you gotta love it, i figured wheels of steel would have been too obvious... SAXON ROCK!!! I am looking forward to maiden's new tour too...been a few years since i last saw em... they were announcing the Dance of Death album at Donnington.

The other two were Iced Earth's Melancholy and Samson's Hammerhead.

a slightly different tack now...

We cruise down the river patrolling the docks
Deliverin justice to eight square blocks
Brooklyn was safe nobody got shot
We used swords and daggers and kung fu what nots
This kinda sh**s so common had no choice
Doin it for free like the village voice
This ends my first installment of the story
He was good kicking ass but bad with the glory

here is one of my personal favourites...

; Its snowing outside the rumbling sound
Of engines roar in the night
The mission is near the confident men
Are waiting to drop from the sky

The blizzard goes on but still they must fly
No one should go where eagles dare
Bavarian alps that lay all around
They seem to stare from below
The enemy lines a long time passed
Are lying deep in the snow

Into the night they fall through the sky
No one should fly where eagles dare

Theyre closing in the fortress is near
Its standing high in the sky
The cable cars the only way in
Its really impossible to climb

They make their way but maybe too late
Theyve got to try to save the day

The panicking cries the roaring of guns
Are echoing all round the valley
The mission complete the make to escape
Away from the eagles nest

They dared to go where no one would try
They chose to fly where eagles dare

Make the sadness go away
Come back another day
The things I've said and done
Don't matter to anyone
But still, you push me to see
Something, I can never be
Why am I their shattered king?
I don't mean anything

and this...

I want to ride out on your quest
I'm waiting, I'm waiting, to stand by your side
To fight with you over the sea
They're calling, they're calling, I have to be there
The holy land has to be free Fight the good fight
Believe what is right

and finally...

They hammered and wrought and the rune spell caught
And engraved upon it's shaft,
With a head of steel beneath which all men would kneel,
And would lay down the sword, at last.

I think the other shadowrun thread "I love shadowrun" has some ideas, but here's some more. Firstly, there's not too many published for 4E, so if you're playing that one you might need to do some conversion. IF you visit the offical website they do publish one a month that you can download for free, and now they are doing ones for 4E. They can more or less be run as a campaign, one after the other. However, I haven't bee that impressed with the quality of these books. I have run a number of published Shadowrun adventures, my favourite is the Brainscan campaign, which involves Deus the AI that takes over the Renrakru acrcology, this series is awesome. The three adventures published in the corporate punishment adventure are all pretty solid. I've been trying to run Paradise Lost, which takes place on Hawaii, I like this module, but it takes some reworking. I can't think of too many other that really stand out right now.

Since there are a lot of Shadowrun afficionados on the boards, I figured this would be as good a place to ask this question as any. I'm looking to start running a Shadowrun game, but I don't have a lot of time to write up original material - are there any published modules anyone could recommend?

the original Harlequin module was amazing... i played in it and ran it at a later date... harlequin's back was pretty good too

Do you want it to translate the wielder, too? If so, use tongues.

my initial option was probably the easiest as it used an existing item but the others all have merrit too, it's a personal choice thing i guess

Hi all –

I am thus far disappointed in the usefulness of Pathfinder. Being a Greyhawk culturist, I find my reading of Pathfinders' Galarion disenfranchised (someone will of course correct my misspelling of their setting). The story line is great and the flavor of the setting is excellent. However, without places like CanonFire!.com authors willing to do the work for me (the converting and placing of Pathfinder into a more Greyhawk or as termed, Pathhawk, setting) I am unlikely to use it. In fact, I received issue 3 on Saturday 2007.11.10, flipped through it and then promptly placed it in my magazine rack.
My purchases of Pathfinder will likely end after this Adventure Path. I have yet to purchase any of the Game Mastery modules, but I did buy the Critical Deck, and just...
As I am in my 40s Greyhawk is synonymous to D&D for me too. I’m surprised that you received Pathfinder 3 and put it aside. Fort Rannick could easily be placed in a variety of areas. While Sterich, Geoff, Yoemanry especially lend themselves to it, it could be any overrun fort on the frontier in rough terrain. It is a great adventure that is far more than a Steading-of-the-Hill-Giant-King giant whacking. The Gamemastery line has been excellent too, Bloodsworn Vale (W1) could be placed in Geoff, Yoemanry, Perrenland, Theocarcy of the Pale, or Ratik. Gallery of Evil (U1) can be placed in any large city. Crown of the Kobold King (D1) can be placed in any lightly settled area. They’re all really very flexible. The probability that any new Greyhawk material will be created approaches zero. While you’ll likely always need to make some adjustments, I find it far easier to tweak than to create from whole cloth. If nothing else I find reading a good module inspirational, sending me down paths that I wouldn’t have gone down otherwise in the campaign.

I grew into gaming with Greyhawk and it has and probably will always be my spiritual D&D home. i have read through a couple of the pathfinder modules and indeed the game mastery ones and with a little work they would indeed fit in with the camoaign world of choice of my group (which has been running for more than 20 years now).

second ed. turned D&D into a cash cow with all the extra stuff that was produced to 'add spice' to the game, a scenario which was sadly repeated with third and 3.5 editions.

sadly WoTC with their corporate mindset don't seem to have taken an interest in us long term gamers, those of us who are like the bird man of alcatraz... set in our ways.

i would like to thank you Erik, James and all those other guys who have done such a grand job of keeping gamers like me interested in D&D when the guys that own it just want us to empty our pockets to line their own. Paizo has been one of the greatest assets to D&D in the last 5 years, at least in my own humble opinion.

i will not be buying 4.0 (i cant afford to buy all that AND a laptop just to continue my hobby) and will definitely check out a 3.5(mkII) from Paizo and look forward to your own and indeed your contributor's good works.

I've run several games without wizards. You have spellcasters in the cleric and druid. Why do you think you have to have arcane magic to survive in DnD? Clerics are much more important in my opinion than wizards.

i am currently taking part in an AoW campaign that for the first 10 levels had no mage or cleric... in that situation UMD becomes a rogue's best friend!

what about a helm of comprehend languages and reading magic? the standard price for this is 5200gp, of course you would have to double that as it has no space limitation. to buy it would be 10,400gp and if they were making it themselves 5,200gp.

hope that helps

Never played 4th ed by some mates and i did play at euro gencon 92 with sam lewis... that whole royal family thing... cheese but great too (prince charles as a troll... who'd have thunk it!). to date SR is the only game i have consistently GM'd and i ran thru 1st, 2nd and 3rd eds. this was the first and only game that i have played in and run where it don't matter how great you think you might be even the cops can leave you as nuthin' more than a greasy stain on the streets of seattle. i still have a box full of stuff up in the loft... only thing that got my goat was decking... man it took forever!!!

Nice suggestion indeed. I will think all of it over !

Also, my thief is tempted by the assassin prestige class, or another one (do not remember the name) similar without the evil alignment requirement. Of course he would like to join the Assassin's Guild.
As it is historically an offspring of the Thieves Guild with the mission of disposing of GH enemies, I think the Guild might be interested in testing him during AoW. Do you think Greyhawk Ruins would be a good testing ground for that matter ? May be the Assassins could contact him after Tirra so that he has double reasons to explore the Castle ?

Last one: I have a new player joining, greatly tempted to come up with a druid. He knows the campaign is rather dungeon/city oriented, but insists. Do you see a good motivation for him to visit the Castle also ?

Thanks again for your insights.

go for the urban druid... i think it was in the cityscape book... a pretty good variant if your player is keen but worried about the urban environment

My group, which is composed of a swashbuckler/rogue and a barbarian/wizard and her pet owlbear, entered the games under the name of 'The Diamond Dogs' in homage to Diamond Lake and Bowie, sadly the owlbear got munched by Madtooth, luckily the prize money covered the cost of the raise dead... just!

Looks like i'm an old timer too... though at not quite 34 i don't always feel like it. I started playing when i was 12 and new to Secondary School, i played with a kid i knew from middle school (with whom i had experimented with the massive delights of runequest as a travelling dentist...dont ask about that one!).

My first Character Was Erkil the dwarf, A fighter who was as tough as old boots. had a battle axe of speed and double specialization and was a mean killing machine with a near patholgical hatred of goblinoids.

Sadly he bit the dust during GDQ when he was left high and dry by an elven cavalier(typical... damn treehuggers!)and was killed by a large number of trogs who managed a few natural twenties and high rolls on the dragon crit hit tables... i think it was a perforated lung that killed him in the end...

still playing now with the same GM and one player from those heady days when 48 hours of every week were spent eating toasted sandwhiches and playing D&D... ah those halcyon days...

hey i figured it out... if you can be nostalgic then your an old gamer

I managed to miss out on the whole newborn thing taking on my wife's two kids from her previous marriage and not having any of my own. That aside my spare time, energy and cash are taken up by the extra activities that my two (a son of 16 and a daughter of 14) take part in so playing D&D has to take a back seat.

I should have been gaming this weekend just passed but something came up so i took the family to watch my kid brother wrestling instead (not a complete loss). If your mates ask you if you'd like a gift then a subscription is a great idea, either that or pick up one of the longer campaign arcs or APs such as SC or AoW (if it is ever produced) as they are pretty much plug and play.

It is good to be able to catch up with your mates just don't sacrifice too much to do it too often. My group plays once a month, twice if we can manage it for roughly six hours... as you can tell campaigns tend to take a while. Good luck mate, to you, your Mrs and the litt'lun too
