It all depends. I recently played a PFS module where a successful Diplomacy check triggered combat. The logic being the NPCs took the PCs ability to talk as weakness. So you never know how the skill checks will work out.

If someone's PC has an action, but nothing which does fire damage, Kaseem will allow them to retrieve his remaining Alchemist's Fire from his bandolier to throw at the oozes.

Just in case the DC is 30, Kaseem will automatically aid (+9 Perception) Ari-Ani's Perception check.

Unsure if they will provide any defense or help versus the diseased grove Kaseem nonetheless makes sure his scrolls of Detect Poison, Detect Evil, Air Bubble, and Protection from Evil are in one of his bandoliers. In the other bandolier he checks his Alchemist's Fires, Holy Water, and Acid flasks.

Great Googly Moogly that's one weird looking creature! Is there a Knowledge check to learn more about him? On improving his attitude with Diplomacy, can it be the same PC twice? Or does it have to be 2 different PCs? Obviously Silver Tongue is the #1 choice; if he can do it twice I'd suggest the rest of us try to aid his check. Kaseem is a bit apprehensive about casting Guidance as Dolok might take it poorly.

Kaseem has a +1 bonus to both Strength and Dexterity so he can assist on the Strength check but isn't a good choice for Acrobatics. He has Religion but not Nature so he can't help with that nor does he have Engineering.

@GM: Would there be a Knowledge or Spellcraft roll about the ceremony? From a player knowledge perspective what Nelket said sounds very similar to a Planar Ally spell.

Horrid rolls happen and neither the player nor PC has a re-roll available. If only there was a Paladin at the table that has +5 in Knowledge (Religion) who could try making the roll...I wonder who that would be??? ;)

So it isn't just me. I was going to send PMs to the GMs letting them know of my connection issues with the site but it appears it's more widespread. Not rush on starting and unfortunately I have not run/read/own this module either.

The great axe condundrum started in 3.0 with the 'out of the book' orc wielding a great axe. If that baby critted, the PC was a goner. So when they changed over to 3.5 they replaced the great axe with a falchion. Since it critted 10% more often than the great axe, it still bagged many a PC. Luck always plays a role.
The other not near-death part of playing up I didn't like was that my PC, being a Paladin, just couldn't contribute as much. One hit and he was out of the fight to heal or other PCs would have to take their actions to heal/protect him and it just makes things tougher on the group as a whole.

If this was PF2, playing up would probably be suicidal on account of the +10 crit mechanic. In PF1, it's kind of a crapshoot. In early years, playing up was a trivial increase in difficulty. Around Season 4, PFS dramatically increased the difficult of missions and there were LOTS of TPKs. I have no idea how season 9 averages out.

3-02 and 5-06, both at the first in-person Convention I attended. One of them (I think 5-06), my L3 Paladin with 28 HPs was hit for 23 HP damage - in one hit. Not one round, one hit. Luckily he didn't get hit again until he managed to heal up a bit but it still almost killed him. In the last slot of the day I played 5-02 but this time I talked a couple of other players into voting to play down as more than half of the table (sort of like this table) were L3. The player with the L7 PC wanted to play up but lost the vote. For that module the GM told us what we would've faced in the 6-7 subtier vs. the 3-4 subtier we were playing. One of the encounters the PCs had literally zero options for fighting it and we would've either died or run.

It comes out to 2.86 which is rounded up to 3 so we could pick either high or low tier. With FOUR 2nd level PCs I would strongly recommend the lower tier based on my past experiences playing up particularly when 2/3 of the table is out of tier on the lower end.

I probably messed the math up since we'll now be a table of 6. If we have a choice I'd prefer lower tier; I've had bad experiences playing up. :(
