Books and maps and scrolls... Kai can read those, but he can't read people. Would that be "coming downhill" to assist us or "coming downhill" to kill us??

Kai's truly not this paranoid. But *I* am.
Kai's just happy to be out and about, slinging spells, learning new things... it's my job to make sure he stays alive long enough. lol.

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Lol - no worries!

At first he seemed quite upset (literally steamed, as his elemental nature burns a bit hotter), "hmpf." Then, noting her wounds his internal fire dies down. "It is. Understandable..." A instant later his smile and the light in his eyes returns, and quite cheerfully he admits, "Besides I'm sure it won't be the last thing out here that will want a bite of us."

Kai-Sovis turns and makes ready to continue the march.

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Lol, you toasted all my fun...

Well, Kai digs through the ashes... it appears he is looking for something. Anything. He pockets a few of its teeth, stands, and declares, "Next time, try not to destroy everything. We may have been able to learn a great deal from this fallen creature... or at least salvaged some of its more arcane parts."

Kai stares down at his dirty hands, sleeves, and travel robes. Grimaces. And two arcane words later, the grime and soot are magically swept free -- he appears to have just stepped off the Leprichaun. Prestidigitation, Baby! *Always lookin' his best :)

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

"One moment..." Kai busies himself by cutting into the displacer beast with one of the small daggers he carries... At first glance it looks like he might be cleaning it for a meal later, then it just looks like he's digging in it like he's lost his chamber-keys...
He's not subtle or clean about it and soon the corpse is near unrecognizable, and Kai seems to be pulling organs out to keep.

For the DM:

Three goals in this:
1) He's looking for the stomach or liver or any organ that might show signs of "residuum infection". If there is nothing obvious, he'll just end up taking the innards with him for further study when they get to camp.

2) Whether there's a game mechanic or not to it, fey creatures might contain ritual components that he might be able to distill later on. If there's no mechanic, I'll just roleplay it as one of the ways he gets components.

3) Kai is always curious. His high intelligence needs to be fed. He's never seen the insides of a fresh disp.beast... seemed like as good a time as any.

If needed:
Arcana: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22
Nature: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

lol... but Maborg has a little fire resistance, so I can singe him just a bit :)
hahahaha

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Kai had not intended to catch Aleena in his attack, the beast must've moved too quickly. For future, Kai would not attack a party member, I'll spell it out clearer in my readied actions.

From the Scorching Burst Readied Action
Attack vs Beast: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24 vs REF
Attack vs Aleena: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 vs REF
If they hit, Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 fire damage

EDIT: In the end, I guess the dice agreed with Kai not shooting a friendly. And it's a crit, but it looks like it is already max damage, whoohoo!

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Kai inches closer to Edie to make sure she is fine and readies himself to blast the feline creature as soon as it shows. His eyes light up as he begins incanting a simple spell... holding off on the last syllable so that he can release a column of arcane flame the instant he sees the creature.

Readied Action to cast Scorching Burst on the beast the instant he shows. Targeting the creature's square with a burst 1 so it will hit all the adjacent squares... hopefully catching it regardless of its mind warping powers.

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

FOR GRIM:

Two character questions:

1) I currently have 3 cantrips (Light, Mage Hand, and Chameleon -that stealth power). I think I'd like to switch out Light for Prestidigitation. I know it means losing a potential source of light, but I think I want Kai to be able to call flicks of flame (goes with his persona) and Prestidigitation offers a lot more arcane flavor than just casting Light...
Of course, I think they shouldn't have limited the number of cantrips a mage could know, minor arcane powers seem to naturally fit the class. Ah well.

So, would you mid if I switch out the cantrip Light?

2) How much do you use Rituals in your games?
I can't tell if the mage class gets rituals or not. I think so, I just don't get free ones every five levels like a wizard, but that may have been a house rule at our table game, and I can't find it. So, I was wondering if I should keep looking or let it go, lol.

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

I think the group is ready to move out by foot.
We're not letting Maborg near our ship - it's well concealed for now, we don't want it falling to the same disenchant, and we can't really take that many with us from Maborg's crew.
...it didn't sound like it was too far away.

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

As the afterthought occurs to him, "Actually, with that much unrefined arcane essence raining down on the environ, it's no wonder the fauna is unbalanced and willing to attack so aggressively... Maborg, I fear the team you left behind may be in greater peril than previously suspected."

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Ruminating more to himself than anyone else, "So. A residuum storm... I supposed a charged mote of residuum traveling through an oppositely charged arcane item may strip it of its inherent properties."
Kai's eyes brighten and more to the group as he feels he may have a valid cause, "It sounds similar to a Disenchant Ritual... of course on a much larger scale... and raining down from the skies... and strong enough to knock multiple flight machine from the air."

Then to the pile of items offered from Maborg, "And if we take those items with us to this Tower, I'm not sure how long their inherent magicks will last."

Kai fiddles with the bracers and the belt attempting to attune himself to them, so perhaps he can gain more info in an hour or so... but maybe also find out more about this draining effect.
Arcana: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Is the bug scared off? Challenge over?

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Not understanding the language (Perhaps Dwarven? thought the words appear similar to formal counting in Korean, lol), but recognizing its sequence and assuming "JIGGIT" means to start over. Kai tries to help Edie keep time, though his pronunciation is probably off:
"Tan, TeTHER, mather, pipf, aser, SEZAR, ekker..."

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Kai tentatively raps on the nearest wall with his fist, tries a little harder... then gives up when the only sound is his grimace. He tries a different tactic: work smarter, not harder.

Clearing his throat, he calls out to Maborg's thugs, "Try jumping over there, a little to the left. No. Your other left. There should be a focus in the substrate that will resonate and amplify your efforts." When they stop at stare at him, he rewords it: "Stomp there and it will be louder!"

Dungeoneering: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 7 + 2 = 16
Could also use Nature there instead, if you think it's more appropriate, it would be +2 more.

Status: HP: 21/26

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Kai looks quizzically at the dwarf. "This creature followed the tiefling all the way from the mountains and you expect a little loud jumping to scare it off? ... Permanently?
Why not draw it out into the open with all of us in a strategic location and burn it down?"

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Kai spends a few heart beats mentally running a private checklist of causes for tremors. He subtly shakes his head no each time he rejects a theory. Finally he stops, looks straight at Edie, his eyes flash with a bit of terror...

Not a shout, but in a clear voice, "Lady Edie. Do. Not. Move. Everyone else stop." Kai-Sovis grasps Kendall's arm, trying to stop his forward progress.

Turning towards Maborg. His spine straightens and his voice deepens as if addressing an unruly student that has just set their desktop on fire (again). "It followed you into town. You've put all of these people in danger. What is it exactly? Be fast."

Kai continues to his shipmates still in a lecture-tone. Matter-of-factly, "Some subterranean creature is most probably tracking the tiefling and his thugs down from the mountains. It is the most reasonable explanation for the tremors. The cobblestones and building floors could be confusing it for now... but..." Kai tries to draw Kendall's eyes towards Edie, one of the only one of us who is standing on patch of grassy field instead of worked stone.

Ah, "Tremors", we need Kevin Bacon here to help us out.

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Kai's eyes still smolder as he mentally considers the encounter, Interesting litmus test for us, we seemed to have survived the fire... I think I like these bunkmates! He flashes a quick smile to his teammates and brushes a little dust from the sleeves of his travel robes.

The rumble of the ground finally pulls Magus Eclavim's attention from the other salvage team. He focuses for a moment to see if he can discern the source.
Nature: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
Arcana: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Aleena, you should heal yourself - I only took two hp of damage. You got hit a lot worse.

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Round two
Kai steps over the crumpled body with the nunchaku, sliding in next to Kendall's shield. He uses his arcane teaching to focus his mind for a moment in the chaos of combat... with a glance and flick of the wrist he sends two of the thugs back through the window they were leaping from.
Then with a blaze he turns back to Maborg. Kai's eyes light up, and fire springs to his call... blue, white, and red sparks of molten metal begin to rain down upon his enemies. But doing his best to not kill the already fallen foe.

I think I can SHIFT to put Kendall between me and Aleena and still be protected by both Kendall and Aleena's rug... err... daughter.
So...
MOVE ACTION: Shift away from Maborg
STANDARD ACTION: Psychic Surge vs the two coming out of the window.
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21 vs WILL of "shortsword guy"
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22 vs WILL of "coming out of window guy"
If they hit, they each take Damage: 4 = 4 psychic damage and are pushed 3 squares... I'd like to force them back through the window (as painfully as possible).
ACTION POINT: Argent Rain targeting the area between Kendall and the Inn
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23 vs REF of "hammer guy"
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22 vs REF of Maborg
If they hit, they take Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 fire damage and the area is on fire till my next turn - ALL CREATURES take 5 damage.
I'm also assuming that the nunchaku guy is out of combat, so I wouldn't include him in the attack.

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Since it only goes against enemies (and yeah - that's a nice power that only hits enemies -- most tend to be indiscriminant at low level... :) but I picked powers that mostly only target enemies so I can sling freely),
Anyway, I would've lobbed it where it hits the most target -- so it sounds like:
Primary: Hammerman
Secondary: Axeman-1, Axeman-2, and Maborg.

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Just curious before I post my second round, do I know how my round 1 actions played out? (how many I hit and so on?)

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Kai spares a half second to appreciate Steelshod's valor... just a half second. And then throws one of his stronger spells at the group. A ball of glowing force streaks to the center of our adversaries and then erupts into arcane shrapnel that flies towards the others. (We have three in front of us, including Maborg, and three behind us outside?)

Move Action: (if necessary) shift to a position where I can cast without invoking an attack of opportunity... and still stay close to Aleena's new crazy rug creature.
Standard Action: Force Orb Attack.
I'd like to target the nearest group, preferably one that includes those that Aleena and/or Edie has already hit. I need to target the middle one first, so that my secondary attack hits more enemies... not sure who that would be, or if there is a chance of hitting 4 or 5 others?
Force Orb Primary Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17 vs REF of middle target
If it hits, Damage: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (1, 4) + 4 = 9 force damage <--IGNORE
EDIT: Free Action, rerolling the (1): NEW DAMAGE: 1d8 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 4 = 12 <-- Use this!

After it hits the middle target it explodes hitting ADJACENT ENEMIES.
Secondary Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17 vs REF
Secondary Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12 vs REF
Secondary Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 vs REF (if available)
Secondary Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12 vs REF (if available)
If any of those hit, Secondary Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12 force damage

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

"Ha hah! Like you'll ever find The Lucky Leprichaun." Kia is still proud of himself until he sees the weapons being drawn... Now things are getting hot!

Initiative: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (12) + 0 = 12

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

As quietly as he can manage, Kai whispers to his shipmates, "That is NOT a salvage team, that is a muscle team - notice: no researcher, no support members, nothing but brute force... They most likely want to take our Leprichaun and press gang those of us that are left standing."

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Kai would've used arcana to help conceal The Lucky Leprichaun. Bending the light a bit, wrapping other parts in shadow.
Chameleon's Mask: Use Arcana instead of Stealth...
Stealth Check: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28

It takes just a few moments, but in the end he is more than satisfied that it would take extreme skill to pick Lucky out of the haystacks. He starts off after the group with a big smile.

Kai-Sovis seems lost in thought as the team travels the road. The wall, the bridge, the various shops, none of them register. This was the first time he has truly used his magic outside of the classroom. The thrill of it burns bright on his face, while his mind races translating arcane academics to practical application in his mind.

Kai is so focused, that he barely notes the ruckus within the inn. And it's not till he hears Kendall's Intimidating warning, that he finally wakes up and feels the groups tensing. He does his best to stay out of the way and towards the back. Arms folded behind him, eyes blazing, and trying his best to note anything he can about the group and the surroundings.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

I think the consensus is to stop off and rest rather than pushing through and losing a surge -- no need, we don't believe we're in a time crunch.
...
So, stopping the night in Brothersford.

Questions for Grim:
Is our ship something we'd have to hide? Since I'm sure surface dwellers are tired of salvage teams coming down and "rescuing" items from them... or is it possible that ornithopters are common enough that we don't look like a threat to the populace?
Also, along those same lines: are we going to face constant angst from the surfacers (landers?? downers?!!) b/c we're from Erarat (we're eraratians, erars, erarans, cloudies??)

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

"I'm unsure if indeed there will be ghouls, but you have the pertinent information correct." Kai finds that staying in instructor mode helps him get through the worst of Aleena's aerial acrobatics.

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Kai visibly relaxes as he shifts into his familiar instructor mode.

"Donte, also known as Warrentown, is a chaotic assortment of buildings, designs, and people. While there is a titular city government, Donte is run by the local thieves' guild... and with populace of bandits outnumbering the honest folk of Warrentown, that fact is of little wonder. Though, it has led to interesting local rumors, including one on a series of murders being blamed on one of the original founders of the town or some such local superstition.
Despite all of that, Donte is probably best known to outsiders for its eclectic arrangement of buildings. It is a maze of twisted structures of various heights and easy to get lost in. Or easy for some to get lost within... It also boasts a sprawling subterranean dungeon and undercity of sewer labyrinths that rivals some of the grandest cities in the land.
For a salvage team, this could be a significant find."

Then as an afterthought, "Oh. And of course, there are the undead. Donte should have been swallowed by the undead of the Nightlands by now. There may not be teams of them roaming the streets, but be prepared. I do believe that I have a source of radiant energy that I could bring to bear if called upon, but I cannot focus it often."

I have an encounter power that I can switch to that does radiant damage, which is generally helpful vs undead...

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Kai would completely misread Steelshod at this moment.

Kai marvels at the dwarfs resolve. Curse the dwarves and their genetic stability. I bet if we went upside down he wouldn't be phased -- wait, can this thing flip upside-down??!

Rather flatly, "I'm telling you we should've brought cats on board."

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

We're not falling, we're flying... yes, flying. It's just a form of arcane flight. Yup. Get it together Sovis!

Through clenched teeth, "Bear slightly east... no, east is currently to your right... your other right."
"And, though years of being targeted by Master Travix's translocation spells has steeled me from being nauseated, I am not sure the rest of the crew has had similar exposure. Lady Edie, you may try to keep you hand off the vertical control lever."
Nearly all of that comes out in one breath as Kai struggles to keep his cool. Well, as cool as he can as he attempts to stay as still as possible.

Don't complain! Do not distract her - At least she is at the controls, I don't think I can move from this spot...

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

A machine... just think of it as another form of magic, just another form of magic... never mind that it is too heavy to stay aloft, and it is an incomprehensible -even for me- distance to fall, and no natural creature that flies is shaped this way -STOP THAT! it's just another form of magic... it's just another form of magic...

Kai seems to be mumbling a bit to himself and standing as rigid as possible. Fighting back the nervousness in his voice, "I will gladly navigate to Donte for you, Lady Edie."

Without moving from his position, Kai looks over to the maps and begins making note of their current position and destination. Kai takes a deep breath, centers himself, and begins to recall all he can remember of Donte, Nightlands, and the regions to the northeast.

If needed for navigation issues, Dungeoneering? to read the maps??: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
For info on their desitination, History: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Kai only half listens to the exchange about armor wearing and who does what...

He peruses the volumes in the control room making a mental note of each - creating a reading list and rearranging a few of them so that they are properly ordered. Once satisfied, takes a look at the actual controls and then finally returns to the bunkroom entrance to discuss possible courses.

Kai-Sovis was fairly friendly and jovial, but all of that has burned away when the question of getting down to business arises. "There is a village to the northeast called Donte. Based on their proximity to the Nightlands, they should be overrun by the undead by now. However, they've managed to curtain the advance with the aide of a village champion. I would very much like to meet this champion..." He pauses, maybe leaving something more unsaid... "Plus, I would assume the area to be fairly free of competitor salvage teams."

DM question::

What sort of rolls/checks does it look like it will take to pilot this craft?
Also, can I start making knowledge checks on each of our rumors that have been presented? Maybe history or religion checks? Just to see if any course of action would be better suited.

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

"Ha. My first 15 years at the Arcanix had less privacy." Just barely... ah well. Kai tries to find the bunk that is closest to any sort of window or light, and drops his packs. He's about to start unpacking when the thought strikes him...

"--Wait. Who's flying this thing?" He then flies to what he would suspect is the control room.

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

"Ah, yes, cats. And not for vermin. The last reported flying vermin in these parts was made by Doc Vayl. And he's been deceased for years. No, the felines are to appease the god Ragibesh..." Kai fades a bit into lecture mode as he talks about cats and the reports of their religious significance.

He strides up the gangplank after Edie. He's dress in simple travel robes with no weapons visible. His only gear seems to be some simple bags and despite their light weight, they look like they might tip him over any minute.

He finally breaks from his lecture on cats to answer Edie question. "Instructor Kia-Sovis. Assistant Instructor. Well, junior assistant instructor. I was in charge of younglings at the Arcanix; teaching them how to call fire." He shrugs and smiles at that last part, his golden eyes glowing like embers.

"And you all?" Without waiting for a reply, he continues to look about the small craft. "Where's my room?"

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

I'm here and posted. Thursday/Friday were tough work days. All better :)

Male Genasi (Cindersoul) Evocation Mage 1

Lol, sorry. I'm here!

Kai runs his hand through his short-cut hair, trying to catch his wind. He feared the salvage team may have left without him. Seeing the mechanical thing still docked settles his nerves... just a bit.

"Sorry, I'm late all." Kai announces it whether there are people outside or not... just assuming that you would hear him approach. He runs one last mental checklist hoping that he has left everything in order back at the academy.

Eyeing the mechanical ship, "Did anyone remember to make offerings to Janadee for her protection during our travels? I'm sure this is safe and all, but..." He climbs the ramp looking for his fellow crewmates. "Maybe we need to bring a cat aboard, I think Ragibesh keeps storms at bay if you have a cat or was it cats attract storms?? I know I have a book on it somewhere, I'll look." The last is mere mutterings, as Kai continues to inspect the ship.

Kai is religious from a scholarly and practical standpoint - he knows they exist and they are quite powerful, so it's only wise to understand and court their favor! Plus it's a bit of genetics with the genasi. "Worship" is a bit strong, but "adherence" is probably pretty close.

Zerombr wrote:
So would you like us to already be in cahoots with each other as a salvage team then?

Good question.

If we're not already part of a salvage team, I'd be good with building in a backstory with anyone:
> He can be a hot head (hahaha, fire genasi pun) and he too is looking for his past in a way, so finding common ground with a Kendall could be really easy.

> He's studied long, is well-read, and is religious so finding common ground with Aleena should also be easy.

> He's no farmer, but he finds sheep tasty, and he's got arcane energies in common with Edie... so, that could also be common ground.

But, if we decide that we don't know each other prior to becoming "Salvage Team Omicron", I'm good with that too.

Moving over to the discussion page...

Hey Rev!

You and I played together for a bit in FabesDM's Sleeper in the Tomb of Dreams game a while back (I took over Hadarai at the very end of the run).
Great to see you back, it will be fun to game with you again :)

As the name currently suggests.
This is Mur's Mage (actual name coming soon, lol)

He's very book smart, with lots of knowledges...
He's incredibly weak and also a bit clumsy (low STR and low DEX), but hearty for a mage (good CON) and he'll use his magic to offset most adventuring problems (like his Chameleon power that let's him use Arcana for Stealth Checks).

...

For Grim:

I went with Fire Genasi (but Grim if that doesn't work in the setting, I can go with another choice)... I was thinking something along the lines of the "Lost Child" concept. He has no real notion of his childhood or his parents.
His earliest memories would be of finding himself in Erarat, adopted by the local wizard's guild. He learns magic quickly and well, but doesn't really fit in (being "not natural", by definition). Joining a crew that delves to the surface allows him the chance to maybe find some clues that will tell him more about himself and/or his people and/or how he got to Erarat even.

I'm pretty much done (I have to pick a name still, lol) and I'm also mulling on my feat - I was thinking of taking a multiclass to maybe help the group with extra healing/support. I'll be decided by tonight.
