Hearing Ishirou's warning, Jesari cautiously backed away from the opening so that whatever was pursuing Ishirou wouldn't have an easy time dragging her down into the watery pit. Jesari backed away from the rope, leaving the task of pulling Ishirou up to Alexite. Instead, she scrambled for her weapon and peered down into the cavern, trying to make out their foes. Heal: 1d20 ⇒ 17 Jesari leaned against her shovel as she peered down at the skeleton, completely exhausted from her efforts thus far. "That's not a good start. Hopefully it's just some kind of morbid warning and not a sign of things to come." Even though it meant more work, Jesari nodded in agreement with Alexite's suggestion. "Better safe than sorry. No telling what could be down below." Stepping to the edge to get a better view once the cavern is completely uncovered, Jesari gives the obstacle before her an unsure glance. "Maybe we should use some rope?" Before Ishirou can begin descending, the sorceress does as requested, taking a single crossbow bolt from the case at her hip and effortlessly casting a spell to make it shine like a torch. Jesari gives a polite smile as she tucks the projectile beneath one of the leather straps crossing his chest, giving it a gentle pat to make sure it's in place. "Be careful, ok?"

Jesari gave Ishirou an amused glance as he pulled out the map and went over all the steps to find the correct spot to begin digging. "I'll never understand pirates. Treasure maps, buried treasure, cryptic directions; it's all so ridiculously dramatic." Jesari laughs to herself and folds her arms, already beginning to pace around the hilltop out of boredom. "What's even supposed to be buried here? I'm not sure hauling a chest full of gold and jewels back to camp would be worth the effort. At least not until we find a way off this island." Unless someone can offer her a better way to pass the day, Jesari settles down into a shaded spot and withdraws Aerys' epic from her pack. It was a nice change of pace to get some time to just read, a pastime she enjoyed back home even among all the countless other distractions.

Jesari lagged behind the rest of the group as a way to distance herself from the looting both physically and mentally. This almost felt like grave robbing in her mind; just because it doesn't look like a tomb doesn't mean it isn't one. Still, the book found by Alexite piques her curiosity enough to bring Jesari in closer, the young woman peeking over his shoulder as he read. As Jask's name continued to come up and his innocence became clearer and clearer, Jesari could only speak in astonishment. "Wow. To have found this is one of those one in a million coincidences. Jask has someone looking out for him." Jesari stopped to look at Ishirou out of the corner of her eye, half expecting him to be stuffing the amulet into his pocket as the three of them hovered around the ledger. She had half a mind to just let the Tian man keep everything he found. At least then he'd have something of value in case the treasure map turned out to be a flop, possibly making him easier to deal with if things didn't work out ideally.

Jesari shrugged in response to Alexite's questioning. "He said he would split it up to four ways. As for whether or not he holds up his end of the bargain afterwards, I can't speak for him. Honestly, I don't find him particularly trustworthy but I'm at least willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until he proves me wrong. Call it naivety or whatever else you want, but I think everyone at least deserves a chance to do the right thing, even if you have to drag it out of them sometimes." =========================
Jesari lowers Aerys' book to her lap as she notices Ishirou approaching; also dismissing the spell she had been using to read in the waning sunlight. After Ishirou poses his question, Jesari softly closes the book, stands, and places it near the rest of her belongings. "Sure, Ishirou. Just let me ask the others. We can leave with you in the morning and say we're going out to explore as we normally do. No one else has to know." Minutes later, Jesari walks up behind the ranger, tugging on the sleeve of his shirt to get his attention if she hadn't already and leaning in to whisper to him. "Ishirou wants to leave with us for the treasure. He says it's nearby." I figured I'd go ahead and move things along since its been awhile. Jesari took a step back from Ishirou, eyeing him incredulously. Was that really what all this was about? A treasure? How someone could maintain greed in the face of death was beyond belief but for the good of the other survivors, Jesari bit her tongue. "Ok, deal. We help you, you help us. Why couldn't you have brought this up earlier though? You're looking for a treasure and trying to get off this island alive...two things you just admitted you can't do alone. Why fight against us?" *** Jesari returned to Kali'da and Alexite, looking more confused than anything. It took her a moment to arrange the words in her head in a way that made sense, both to herself and her companions. "Ishirou wants to find a treasure that he has a map to and he wants us to help. He says once he has his treasure, he'll help us get off this island. I think he doesn't want off this island until he has a life worth going back to. I guess he thinks whatever that map of his leads to is going to solve whatever problem he's hiding from." Gonna hold off on responding to Ishirou until Alexite and Kali'da have their say. No way Jesari is going off alone with him. I think my third day diplomacy is going to be for Sasha. I guess just spend some time small talking or something. Jesari flashes a glimpse of the smile that had been absent since learning of Hakeem's fate at Aerys' hesitance to show affection. It was sad in a way, knowing what she did about Aerys' past, but it was still cute enough to push all that aside and earn a genuine albeit brief laugh. "How are you feeling? Have the berries helped?" Jesari took a second to look over Aerys as she repsonded, practically assessing her before taking her hand. "Come on. I think Alexite has done far more to earn your gratitude than I have. We owe him a visit." =========================
Jesari turned toward Alexite as he approached her, listening to his proclamation. Her response likely wasn't what the ranger was hoping for; the young woman practically buried her face in her hands and sighed a sigh of frustration. "Why are you both so ridiculously stubborn? We can't just leave him behind. That's murder." Jesari placed her hands on her hips and hung her head; she was already dreading the next words that were coming out of her mouth. "I'm going to go talk to him." Memories of his lecherous gazes were still fresh in her mind but it still wasn't enough to dissuade her from calming the situation down. She couldn't let what happened to Hakeem happen to anyone else, even a perverted and selfish old man. Her steps as she neared the Tian were soft and cautious, half expecting the man to be filled with anger after his talk with Alexite. With the softest voice she could manage, Jesari spoke up as she drew closer. "Hey...Ishirou. Alexite told me what happened. Just know that it isn't true...and that he didn't mean it. He's just upset with everything that's been happening, you know? It's hard not to be, right?" Jesari paused, searching her mind for the words to get Ishirou to open up to her but the fact was that she just didn't know anything about the past he constantly alluded to in order to make that happen. So instead Jesari continued with the sweet voice of innocence, wearing a mask of concern as she looked for a way in. "Can we talk? I haven't really been able to get to know you with everything that's been happening." Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27 Gonna use my first day to talk with Ishirou, maybe the second as well depending on how things go. I'd like to switch over to reading the book as well. I can go either way. It feels like kind of a waste to have an open spot and not offer it to someone but it might also feel kind of forced to introduce someone new. Back at the camp, Jesari was sitting by herself on a fallen tree, her head resting in one hand while she absently held onto her flute with the other. She had been like this for awhile, alternating between playing a few sorrowful tunes and quietly staring into the distance contemplating her situation. Death seemed to always be lingering over everyone's head but Hakeem's passing made it feel far too real. Jesari didn't want to die - not on this island anyway - and the comforting sound of music was but a momentary reprieve from her grim thoughts; her fingers would eventually come to move on their own from the years of practice, leaving her mind to wander down dark roads once again. Thinking was the last thing she needed to be doing right now. Jesari approached Aerys after Jask's impromptu funeral, holding the captain's hat between fidgeting hands. "I wanted this to be a surprise but..." Jesari shrugs and offers an unenthusiastic smile to the half-elf. "Well, anyway...I thought you would like it. A captain's hat for the future captain."

With Kali'da down, a flash of panic crossed Jesari's face. The sorceress let out a steadying breath and held a single hand out toward where Kali'da had fallen, preparing her next spell. It was a spell she had held off on using up until now out of fear of catching one of her allies in it but with Kali'da brought down by the creatures, she likely wouldn't even know what had happened. With a single word, a stream of painfully bright and mesmerizing colors flowed out from her hand, washing over the fallen priestess and two of the dinosaurs. Casting color spray. I drew on the map where I want to cast it. Hopefully you can see it. Not sure how color spray works on unconscious people but I'm sure Kali'da will be fine even if it does work on her. Jesari stood in shock at the sight of Hakeem laying on the ground surrounded by predators. It was only the sudden swooping attacks that snapped her out of it, her grip tightening on her spear as she shifted to the side to give herself more time to concentrate on a spell. Jesari folded her arms and shook her head as she looked out toward yet another wreck captured by the island. The girl bowed her head and whispered a short blessing for its sailors, even if the wreck didn't look recent. That spark of excitement and thrill for adventure had likely already taken hold of some her companions as they gazed out upon the ruined ship, and Jesari preemptively excluded herself from another trip into the ocean. "No. No way am I going out there. Never again." =========================
Jesari blinked in disbelief, finding it hard to believe she was staring at yet another ship run aground. "This really makes you want to believe all those rumors about this place. It's like the island is collecting trophies. It's starting to get creepy." Her arms wrapped themselves around her waist as a shiver went up her spine. What if this place really was haunted? =========================
There was only one thing on Jesari's mind as the camp came into view but Jask's demeanor was enough to stop her in her tracks. This wasn't like him. With a worried gasp at the delivered news, Jesari looked toward the others. This was definitely an emergency; Gelik was one thing but it wasn't like Hakeem to play around. "What do you guys think? Do you think you can find him?" As the others debated, Jesari snuck away from the conversation and toward Aerys, tapping the half-elf gently on the shoulder to announce herself. "We got the berries for you..." Jesari sat down her backpack with a relieved groan, searching through it for her prize. "Well...it might be more accurate to say Alexite got the berries for you. He went through a lot for these - for you." Jesari stood up and looked over her shoulder at the rest of the group, already bending over to pick up her things once again. "Something might have happened to Hakeem and I think we're going to check it out. I'd like to talk more when we get back."

As everyone gathers around the campfire to prepare for dinner, Jesari leans in toward Sizara upon hearing her plight, resting her face against her hand in thought. She let out a long and thoughtful "Hmm...," her head tilting from side to side as she weighed her words. It was important to make sure her elven companion understood the difference between doing wrong and just doing things the wrong way. "Most humans enjoy their privacy, Sizara. It usually takes awhile for someone to warm up to another person, to feel comfortable letting you in and letting themselves out. I feel like your only problem is projecting the culture of your people onto ours; we're just not the same when it comes to sharing parts of ourselves." Jesari suddenly snaps her fingers as an epiphany occurs to her, a way to explain the predicament in a way the elf might understand. "Have you ever been to a feast? You know how the courses sort of come in waves, right? You start small, work your way up, and then cap everything off with a tasty dessert. Humans are a lot like that. You start with the small things: shared interests, funny stories. Then you get to the real meat of a person: who they are, what they believe. And after all of that, you get the treat; the sweetest part of the person that ties everything else together." Jesari pauses as she finishes speaking, a smile slowing growing on her lips until she can no longer hold back the laughter. "Gods, that was corny wasn't it? I'm so bad with metaphors." With a wistful sigh and a displeased grumble from her stomach, she glances down, absently rubbing a hand across her belly with a frown. "And now I'm hungry, too. What I wouldn't give for some real food right now." *** Once everything in the camp had settled down and her companions looked ready to retire for the night, Jesari slides up to Alexite, leaning in close to whisper to him. "Thank you...for everything. I don't know where we'd be without you." Her head turned away briefly, scanning around the camp as she looked to steer the conversation toward what was actually on her mind. "Look...I have a feeling you know why Aerys wants those berries. Just...keep it a secret and let me handle it, please? She's a very proud woman and I'd like to avoid embarrassing her by letting her secret get out to anyone else. The signs that others had made it onto the island safely was welcome news, though with the suspicions Jesari held toward the captain, it was a mixed blessing at best. She nodded in agreement with Sasha's assessment, studying the discarded hat with a gleam in her eye. The girl crouched down and picked up the tricorne, twisting it about as she looked it over. "Mind if I keep this?" If no one protested, the sorceress gently tucks the hat away with her other belongings. ========================
Jesari looked on as Alexite ventured into the thicket, worry evident on her face. She winced and moved a hand to cover her mouth out of empathy, concerned for the ranger's well-being as he plucked the berries from the thickest cluster of thorns. His return was met with a relieved smile, a joyful clap, and an excited hug. "Thank you so much for this, Alexite. That was incredibly brave." Her eyes shift to his cuts and rashes, feeling guilty to have put him through this for the sake of someone else. "I'll make sure Aerys knows what you did for her. I know she'll appreciate it."

Jesari frantically squirmed out from underneath the spider's corpse, kicking the creature in the face several times in her haste to free herself. Her first act of freedom was to crawl onto her knees, coughing and retching from the lingering taste of spider blood. She gives Sizara a sideways glance between coughing fits, raising her eyebrow in confusion. "Spirit animal...? What?" Finally regaining her compsure, Jesari climbed to her feet, pinching at her clothes and looking down at the mess with obvious disgust; it was going to take awhile to get the mess out, even with magic. "Can we just forget about this, please? I don't like to talk about it." =========================
Jesari's eyes light up at the sight of the campfire, a bit of hope evident in her voice. "Maybe some of the crew survived?" Before getting her hopes too high, however, Jesari waits to hear the news from Alexite and Sasha. ========================
Upon hearing Alexite's declaration that these were viper nettle berries, Jesari could barely contain a gleeful squeal. Her enthusiasm was quickly put on hold when she sized up the obstacle in front of them though. "I can try magically plucking them from the vine, but I'd still have to get closer."

Jesari stirred softly beneath the spider as the commotion pulled her away from her dreams. Her eyes fluttered open wearily at first, finally snapping open fully in abject horror and shock when her mind registered the events taking place around her. As she began screaming, with each one growing louder and more panicked than the last, Jesari's bedroll quickly became a whirlwind of flailing limbs. For a moment, it all felt too surreal, especially upon hearing the echo of her own voice raised to a volume it seldom ever reached. "Get it off! Get it off!" Jesari did the best she could to escape out from under the spider's weight but found little success. With her weapons out of reach, Jesari did the only thing she could think of to scare the arachnid away: she tightly closed her eyes, grabbed a single leg with both hands, and tried to do the very same thing the creature was planning to do to her only seconds ago. Might as well, right? When else am I going to get an excuse to use that ability? =P

Jesari falls in line behind Alexite and Sizara, not wanting to be the one to bear the assault of this second lizard. Once safely inside the cave and behind her companions, Jesari draws her crossbow in anticipation of another fight.

It seemed their lizard foe was slippery in more ways than one. Jesari grit her teeth in obvious frustration, finally deciding to resort to more mundane means of dispatching her foe. With spear in hand, Jesari stepped forward, stabbing downward at the lizard to hopefully put an end to the electrical attacks against her companions. Attack: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19

Not knowing what this creature was or what it was capable of, Jesari found herself fearing the worst. In any case, it was clear that this thing wasn't as much of a pushover as the overly territorial snakes the group had encountered so far. Having made up her mind to end things as quickly as possible, Jesari's hands began to swirl about, leaving a blur of magical energy in their wake. She intoned a few words of power; words that held very little actual meaning to her but were instead more of an involuntary reflex that unlocked things far greater than herself. The only sign that her spell completed was the cloud that glazed over the eyes of the lizard, if only for a second. If Jesari gets the feeling that her magic had it's intended effect, she will hold up a hand, motioning to the others to hold their ground. "Hang on a second. I think I can talk to it." I'm not sure how you feel about counting charming a monster and then asking it to leave as 'defeating an encounter.' I'd like to cast Charm person on the lizard but if it denies everyone XP, I might just poke it with my spear instead. I know it's kinda meta game-y on my part but I thought this would be better than denying progression to everyone else or holding things up with a debate.

Jesari sat in stunned silence, for once completely out of ways to put a positive spin on things or words to use in comfort - if this even were a time for words. Instead, she dropped the hat she had snagged away back into Aerys' lap and turned to face the sun as well, resting her hand on Aerys' knee in reassurance. Jesari stared off into the horizon for what felt like forever, her voice finally filling the silence with a tender and hope-filled whisper. "Maybe someday I can show you a better world." *** Jesari was up bright and early once again, feeling better just as Jask had predicted. Her things were already packed up and ready to go, with a new distinctly book-shaped lump pressing against the side of her backpack. Before everyone was entirely ready to depart, she took the opportunity to properly introduce herself to Sasha since there had been little time for her to speak with the redheaded woman thus far, both here on the island and on the boat. Jesari found herself looking forward to this second exploration adventure; it would be a nice change of pace to have another human girl her own age around to talk to. Gonna take Aerys' book with me to finish it as long as she's ok with it. If not, Jesari would happily leave it behind. And yeah, same exploration and rest actions as usual unless that interferes with the reading. Heal: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (2) + 0 = 2

Jesari frowned when she heard Aerys' story and the words she used to tell it. Those were the words of a defeated woman, one that gave up in the face adversity rather than fight for the place in the world she deserved. With a little effort, Jesari scooted herself across the ground until she was nearly shoulder to shoulder with Aerys. Both of Jesari's delicate hands reached out and wrapped around the free hand of Aerys as she looked into the other woman's eyes. "Life is too precious to spend it pretending to be someone that you're not. Earn their respect by being better than them, not by stooping to their level and trying to imitate them. And if that doesn't work? Screw the rules. Get your own ship, find your own all-female crew if you have to, and show all those boys how stupid they are by doing it better than them. Yeah, it's harder...but no one ever lived a happy life by just taking the easiest path. And... As her voice held onto that last word, one of Jesari's hands slowly snaked itself toward the hat that Aerys had removed, snatching it quickly when the moment was right and hiding it behind her back with a playful smile. "No more hiding. If you're going to die here, at least go out as Aerys and not whoever that other person you created is." Jesari took a second to look back over her shoulder toward the camp and her fellow survivors, returning to meet Aerys' gaze with a look of seriousness. "They need you; we all need you - the real you. Please...just try. For me?" Jesari gave another quick glance behind her, this time wearing a grin when her body turned back to the conversation with Aerys. "They're not that bad. I promise."

Jesari's eyes shifted down and away from Alexite when he began asking questions about Aerys, her lips pressing together as her mind frantically began searching for a polite way to give him the answers he desired without betraying the trust she had earned from Aerys. "Well...she's scared - I think we all are - and I get the feeling she doesn't know how to deal with it. And she's...sick. If we can find some viper nettle berries to help her get better, I think the rest of you would see the woman I see." Jesari gave a quick smile, both to reassure Alexite as a quick congratulations to herself for not letting anything sensitive slip out. A light of realization hits soon after, Jesari's eyes growing wider as she remembers an important piece of information. "Oh! Kali'da says the berries grow near rivers by the way. So if we ever run across one, I think we should follow it and see if anything comes up." *** Jesari wakes up early the next day, already sitting outside underneath the shade of a nearby tree when many of the others awaken in spite of Jask's orders to rest and her own condition. She has made herself seemingly comfortable, her head and shoulders resting against the trunk as she lays down, with Aerys' book propped up against her legs and a hand occasionally lazily reaching up to turn the page. It's only when she spots the stirring of Aerys that Jesari tears herself away from her reading, patting her hand on the ground nearby in the hopes of luring the other woman over. "Hey, how's my new favorite author doing?" Jesari offered up a cheesy smile before snapping the book shut and sitting up. Jesari's eyes wandered across Aerys' face for a few silent moments before she spoke up, wanting to ask a question that had been on her mind since last night. "You were right last night. I grew up looking for the wonderful parts of life; the beauty in everything and everyone. And I have to ask...why are you hiding yours? This book...your face...you're robbing the world of a chance to get to know a really wonderful person." Just doing some RP for the next day, hopefully buttering Aerys up to the point where she feels like helping out around the camp. Are we able to raise an NPCs morale or is it fixed? If I can fit it in, I'd also like to spend some time with Jask, either this day or the next. Possibly get him to tell some more stories, learn some more about him, and bond a little. Jesari brought Aerys in close, offering the elven woman a shoulder to cry on and the comfort that only a sincere hug can bring. Aerys' sudden need to share catches Jesari off guard but the young woman happily does as instructed, humming to herself while waiting patiently for Aerys to return. It turned out that what Aerys had to share was equally as surprising as her desire to share it. Jesari's eyes lit up when Aerys presented the book and her mouth slowly shifted from an expression of shock to one of childlike glee. Even with sickness hanging over her head, Jesari had trouble keeping her excitement on a leash, bouncing happily and shouting loud enough to be heard by everyone in the camp. "Aerys! This is amazing! I had no idea!" Catching herself, Jesari slapped a hand over her mouth - though it did little to cover her growing smile or laughter - and peeked over at the camp as if to say 'Oops.' But just as quickly as her burst of excitement had come, it faded into a look of contemplation, her eyes looking down at the book in her hands with uncertainty. "I'm honored, Aerys, I really am. And I'd love to read it...but I think it would be better if you hung onto it when I'm done." Jesari sighed and looked up from the book to meet Aerys' eyes. "It might not seem like it, but I'm scared to death too. I mean...I grew up in a temple writing poetry and playing the flute for crying out loud. I'm not exactly cut out for this stuff. But I realized something while I was out there. Every time things got tough and I wanted to just quit, I would think about my grandfather and the promise I have to keep. I feel like it would be best if this book was that same kind of promise for you. Survive, get this book off this island, finish it, and share it with the world."

Jesari nodded to Jask and his suggestion; getting some rest sounded like the best idea she had heard since getting shipwrecked on this stupid island. Before she could do that, however, Jesari felt compelled to check on Aerys. She felt far too invested in the other woman and really wanted to see things work out for her, even if it was just some kind of way to set her mind at ease for not having tried harder with her old friend back in Cheliax. Jesari walked up to Aerys with her eyebrows arched in concern and placed a hand on the other woman's shoulder. "How are you doing? I know it sucks being stuck here, just waiting and having to trust that everything will just magically work out. Would you feel better coming with us next time?" Once she finished speaking to Aerys, Jesari made her way to the tent Jask indicated, leaving her stuff outside and crawling inside to lean back against her arms and wait for Jask. When he finally arrived, Jesari greeted him with a smile and probed him with questions about the camp. "How has Ishirou been doing? Has he warmed up any? I was kind of hoping he'd take my words to heart and help you guys out." Jesari thanked the kind man for his time and did as she was asked, sliding into the bedroll and flipping over to her side so she could look at Jask while he spoke. His words had exactly the effect that he desired; Jesari was already half asleep, a pleasant smile slowly growing as her thoughts turned back to her happier memories of Cheliax and her grandfather.

Jesari stopped and doubled over as the group made the call to find shelter, her hands grabbing at her knees as sweat dripped from the ends of each strand hair that fell around her face. Her breathing was labored and she was feeling noticeably light-headed, which only allowed her to let out an exhausted "Uh-huh" in agreement with the group's decision. She was beginning to question how people actually lived in this sort of environment. This was truly awful. At the campsite, Jesari gracelessly flopped onto the ground the second she got into the shade, with her backpack being the only thing actually supporting her from falling over completely. Her head titled back and her eyes closed as she let out a deep breath. "Oh, thank the gods. This is heaven." She let out a laugh intertwined with her labored breathing. "Maybe we should go swimming to cool off?"

I feel like it might be best to just camp where we are for the day. Exhausted is apparently a -6 to Strength and Dexterity which puts me at like 2 Strength so I can't move with my stuff anyways. Jesari slowly nodded in agreement with Kali'da. "Yeah, no more crashing waves and jagged rocks for me. Ever." Her eyes closed in relief as the healing magic washed over her. It was a familiar sensation oddly enough, as the cuts and bruises suffered during her time serving at the temple of Shelyn were treated in much the same way. Jesari gave the Mwangi woman an appreciative smile after the magic had run its course. "Thank you, Kali'da." *** As the group sat around the night time fire, Jesari looked inquisitively toward Hakeem. "Where to now? Back to the camp and then south? Jesari's shoulders slumped as she peered over the edge of the ship's deck and gazed back into the water. Jesari did her best to follow Kali'da's instructions but she couldn't help but steal the occasional peek or two at the animals, especially as they closed in toward Alexite.
