While Sizara keeps watch, the remaining members of the exploration group try to discover something interesting about the abandoned campsite.

The examination performed by Alexite and Sasha reveals that the campsite has been recently used. The two rangers are able to find some discarded refuse, including both a tricorn hat and a few brightly colored scarves.

Jesari:
You immediately identify the hat as the one worn by Captain Kovack while you were aboard the Jenivere. You also indentify the scarves as having belonged to the scholar Ieana.

"Hey, this hat...This was Captain Kovack's hat, wasn't it? And these scarves...They belonged to Ieana!", comments Sasha with a perplexed expression.

---

Alexite and Sasha are also able to find some tracks: they find a trail leading south, left from two pairs of Medium sized humanoids.

I'm waiting for Alexite's answer to my PM to know if he's ok to venture into the thorny patch to recover the berries. I will post more later, once I've understood if Alexite whises to perform this task.

No one is able to propose a better plan to get to the berries than to send someone of the group through the patch of thorny nettles. Alexite promptly takes the task upon himself and tries to hack his way through the patch of nettles.

The ranger proves quite nimble and is able to avoid most of the thorns while he moves forward. Once he reaches the center of the patch, he begins harvesting the berries, a task which keeps him busy for 10 minutes. During the harvest, Alexite is pierced by some thorns and instanly develop a painful rash. He feels sickened, but he's stalwart and goes on without a protest.

---

Once he's done harvesting berries, Alexite tries to hack his way back to his companions. He soon returns, but while moving forward several other thorns have stuck in his flesh, worsening his rash. By the way, the ranger is now back from the group, with his beltpouch full of viper berries, and the group can resume its travel towards south.

---

After a short conversation between the party members, the group final decision is to get back to the camp instead of keep going south.

Everyone does his best to find a suitable place where to camp for the night and finally, after an hour spent searching a comfortable shelter, the group is able to spot a natural shelter where to sleep for the night, before having to start traveling again.

The group has camped for the night. While Alexite uses his time to teach some commands to his monkey Tito*, Sasha and Sizara go hunting while Jesari and Kali'da take care of the shelter, ensuring that the site is made clean and comfortable before the others sleep in it.

Everyone does a great job. When Sasha and Sizara come back, the shelter is clean and cozy. The two hunters quickly show the group what they've been able to catch, and only one member of the group is forced to eat the prized rations.

Alexite takes 4 points of damage from the thorns and he's sickened for 24 hours (he will recover in Erastus 2nd afternoon).

The signs that others had made it onto the island safely was welcome news, though with the suspicions Jesari held toward the captain, it was a mixed blessing at best. She nodded in agreement with Sasha's assessment, studying the discarded hat with a gleam in her eye. The girl crouched down and picked up the tricorne, twisting it about as she looked it over. "Mind if I keep this?" If no one protested, the sorceress gently tucks the hat away with her other belongings.

She winced and moved a hand to cover her mouth out of empathy, concerned for the ranger's well-being as he plucked the berries from the thickest cluster of thorns. His return was met with a relieved smile, a joyful clap, and an excited hug. "Thank you so much for this, Alexite. That was incredibly brave." Her eyes shift to his cuts and rashes, feeling guilty to have put him through this for the sake of someone else. "I'll make sure Aerys knows what you did for her. I know she'll appreciate it."

@ Sizara:
Sasha listens to Sizara's words while they travel through the jungle. Then the red-haired girl answers the elf with a brusque tone: "Can you just stop being so...Creepy?", she says, quickly reaching the others.

---

When you go hunting toghether, Sasha stays silent for a long time before breaking the ice. "I-I am sorry for what I said before...I'm just not used to get this personal this soon with people. You were right. I love dinosaurs. I had a dimorphodon pet named Yellowing long ago. It was so cute and sweet! Then she took it away from me...But that's another story. I would be glad to meet your cousin Sizara, if you was telling the truth I'm sure she's an interesting person. But unfortunately I don't know if I would ever venture into the Mwangi Expanse depth to find your people. I just wanted to reach Eleder and start a fresh new life.".

After listening to Sasha's tale, Sizara smiles.

"Don't worry about it. I wasn't offended. I figured something might be bothering you a bit. If anything I'm glad that I didn't offend you. You must understand, I'm still trying to understand how others well socialize. It is very different from how things are done among my people. And I was telling you the truth! She would be overjoyed to meet you!"

Continuing their conversation, she adds, "I'm sorry that this person took your friend from you Sasha. That was not right of whoever it was. Such a person would have been scolded immensely by my people's shamans, druids, and chiefs. Such behavior isn't accepted. If you were mistreating or abusing your pet, then that would be a different story. But from the short time I have been with you, I know that you would never hurt any animal without cause, and the way you speak of Yellowing, you loved her dearly."

"Then I will help you find a new life away from those who would force you to live a life you do not wish to! It is the least I can do. Well, that and also find you a new friend. A new dimorphodon or a new dinosaur friend. If you want me to that is. I don't want to open up old wounds or make you unhappy. You are...um...very special to me. And I feel a close connection to you. Ah there I go again acting like I'm back among my people."

Sizara clears her throat before continuing, "When I said earlier that you were bonded by the spirit of the jungle, I meant that in a good way. I forget that others don't always like that or feel uncomfortable when I tell them such things. But you see, I was bonded with a spirit when I was born. On the day I was born, my people were attacked by the servants of the Gorilla King, the Charau-ka."

She spat the names of the Gorilla King and the Charau-ka.

"They attacked us and several of my people were killed. My mother had just given birth to me and was weak. However, just before the Charau-ka could reach her and me, a massive thunderstorm appeared overhead. Then, the spirit of the cheetah appeared. The Charau-ka were terrified, not only because the storm was sending lightning bolts down, striking several of their number dead, but the cheetah spirit pounced and started slaughtering the Charau-ka, leaving none alive to escape its wrath. When the Charau-ka had all been killed either by the spirit or the storm, the cheetah spirit looked at me and according to my mother seemed to smile before disappearing along with the storm. My people's head shaman said that the spirits of the storm and cheetah had a strong connection with me, and thus that is why I am named Sizara, which means in Elven, Cheetah of Storms. I have always felt a strong connection to both the cheetah and storms. So, you see, being bonded with the spirits isn't necessarily a bad thing. Although I have always wondered, why did they bond with me on the day of my birth? Was I meant for something great? Sometimes the spirits ask for something in return, sometimes they just bond with us mortals just because they wish to, or for any number of reasons. That is what is told to the children of my people. So, I wonder how do I strengthen my bond with the spirits who saved my people and me all those years ago. Ah I'm sorry if I talked your ears off. Come let us find food for us and the others."

Alexite smiled as he pulled out one more thorn from his body. Tito looked at him like the man was crazy and perhaps he was. In any case, the tanglebriar didn't look as bad when he first went in. It was all bad once the first thorn had pricked his skin. he hated to admit it but he had been a tad claustrophobic in there.

"I sure hope Aerys does appreciate it and we can all start working together towards a common goal. Like getting out of here. Do you think she's ready?"

Sizara:
Sasha listens to your words, but while you speak she seems to be unable to focus her attentions on what you're saying, especially after you've been talking for more than a minute.
"Ok, now you're being creepy again Sizara...". The red-headed girl smiles as she looks the elf in the eyes: "Sometimes you overwhelm people my dear. Not that what you've been saying was not interesting, but...It's a matter of time. Do not get personal too soon with people. I don't know how it works among your people, but we need time to open ourselves up with people we don't know very well. You have to be patient if you want to make some human friends. Sometimes, we're not ready to hear your story, as we're not ready to tell you our stories. I thought elves were much more slower than we are, but it seems like I was wrong. Just be patient, Sizara, and try to not speed up things with the others. Time will tell if there's someone among us who's bound to be your friend. But for now, if you get too close, you might scare us off. Relationships are built step by step".

"Creepy!? All I have done is be nice to everyone and try to protect everyone and I am called creepy as thanks!? You humans are ugh!!!! And to think I thought you were different Sasha. Seems I was wrong."

Sighing a bit, Sizara apologizes

"Sorry if I snapped at you. I really like you Sasha. I have been trying to make friends here but everyone doesn't want to be open with themselves and to others. I know you wish to help me and I appreciate your advice but I cannot do what you advise. This is who I am and I'm not changing."

The next day Sizara tried to talk to Alexite.

"Alexite it seems some of the other survivors believe I am creepy because of my beliefs and who I am. This is not good. And here I thought I was helping others. Among my people being open is a good thing not a bad thing. And yet people here find it creepy."

She also tells the same thing to Jesari and Kali'da too hoping to get help.

That evening she confesses to Sasha.

"Again Sasha I'm sorry for snapping at you the other day. Again I cannot stop being myself. But I'll give you space and leave you be. But I'm not going back on my promise to find you a dinosaur. I keep my promises."

So you can imagine my concern and surprise that others aren't so open about hearing about spirits."

She laughs at this.

As everyone gathers around the campfire to prepare for dinner, Jesari leans in toward Sizara upon hearing her plight, resting her face against her hand in thought. She let out a long and thoughtful "Hmm...," her head tilting from side to side as she weighed her words. It was important to make sure her elven companion understood the difference between doing wrong and just doing things the wrong way.

"Most humans enjoy their privacy, Sizara. It usually takes awhile for someone to warm up to another person, to feel comfortable letting you in and letting themselves out. I feel like your only problem is projecting the culture of your people onto ours; we're just not the same when it comes to sharing parts of ourselves."

Jesari suddenly snaps her fingers as an epiphany occurs to her, a way to explain the predicament in a way the elf might understand. "Have you ever been to a feast? You know how the courses sort of come in waves, right? You start small, work your way up, and then cap everything off with a tasty dessert. Humans are a lot like that. You start with the small things: shared interests, funny stories. Then you get to the real meat of a person: who they are, what they believe. And after all of that, you get the treat; the sweetest part of the person that ties everything else together."

Jesari pauses as she finishes speaking, a smile slowing growing on her lips until she can no longer hold back the laughter. "Gods, that was corny wasn't it? I'm so bad with metaphors." With a wistful sigh and a displeased grumble from her stomach, she glances down, absently rubbing a hand across her belly with a frown. "And now I'm hungry, too. What I wouldn't give for some real food right now."

***

Once everything in the camp had settled down and her companions looked ready to retire for the night, Jesari slides up to Alexite, leaning in close to whisper to him. "Thank you...for everything. I don't know where we'd be without you." Her head turned away briefly, scanning around the camp as she looked to steer the conversation toward what was actually on her mind. "Look...I have a feeling you know why Aerys wants those berries. Just...keep it a secret and let me handle it, please? She's a very proud woman and I'd like to avoid embarrassing her by letting her secret get out to anyone else. I don't think she would handle the idea of everyone knowing her problems very well."

Sizara listened to Jesari's words and began to think about that.

"Hm...I've never thought of humans that way. I guess i should take things slow, huh? A very wise approach Jesari. And no it's not corny actually. Well maybe a little but not much."

When Jesari mentioned about eating real food she laughed.

"I tend to eat fruit and meat. Very nutritious but I know what you mean. I'm still trying to understand the human saying 'taste like chicken.'"

Laughing a bit she added, "Sorry if I offended you when the spider attacked with my talk of spirits and all. I tend to forget that some humans aren't very interested or comfortable about spirits. It's strange to meet people like that. I mean I was bonded with a spirit at birth. And that spirit saved my life. But don't worry about the spider getting in your bed. My cousin put several mice in my bed. Freaked me out. Nearly destroyed my hut getting them out of my bed."

Sizara laughed at remembering her cousin's prank.

When the sun rises again, the party members are well-rested and ready to depart. As always, Alexite guides the group with Jesari's help, while Sasha and Kali'da keep an eye out for potential threats and Sizara takes care of the group.

Today, unfortunately, Alexite and Jesari are not able to properly lead the group: the exploration party spends 4 hours traveling through the jungle, but instead of heading north-west, the group ends up traveling all the way down to east. The dense vegetation and the relentless rain sure have played a major role in causing the group disorientation.

After spending 4 hours traveling east, Alexite and Jesari are now sure about the direction to follow to finally reach the camp. Unfortunately, the long, undesired deviation probably won't allow the group to reach the camp neither toady. The group is currently located on the eastern shore of the island, and all of the party members can see another wreck stuck between some sharp and protruding rocks*.

SHIPWRECK EXPLORATION (optional)
=========================

To reach the ship, a DC 10 Swim check is required.

DC 10 Swim check:

You are able of reaching the shipwreck and lift youself aboard with relative ease.

DC 10 Swim check (failed):

You are not able of reaching the shipwreck, but you can try again.

If you have failed by 5 or more, you take 1d3 damages from the protruding sharp rocks.

If you reached the shipwreck, you can explore the wreck with a Perception check. You can take 10 on this check. Taking 20 requires two hours of exploration and will slow down the party. You cannot use the aid another action. You can try again up to 3 times.

DC 15 Perception check:

You are sure that there's nothing valuable to be found on this shipwreck. The only interesting thing your search has turned out is the name of the ship, carved in a rusting plate: "Golden Bow".

DC 15 Perception check (failed):

You are sure that there's nothing valuable to be found on this shipwreck.

If you have failed by 5 or more, you were distracted enough to step on some weak flooring and plummet 10 feet onto rocks or a lower deck. You take 1d6 points of damage from the fall.

The scouting group spens the remaining hours of the day traveling to the main camp. This time, Alexite guidance proves effective, and the party is able to cover a good distance. The group has traveled in the jungle interior to protect from the relentless rain pouring on Smuggler's Shiv.

As usual, Alexite spends his spare time teaching some commands to Tito, while Jesari and Kali'da prepare the temporary shelter for the night and Sasha goes hunting together with Sizara. The hunt proves very unlucky, with the red-haired girls unable to provide any food to the group members, who are forced to eat the rations, now alarmingly starting to end.

The group is currently located on a sheer cliff above the eastern coas of the island, and all of the party members can see another wreck stuck between some sharp and protruding rocks**. The wreck seems further than the previous one.

SHIPWRECK EXPLORATION (optional)
=========================

To reach the ship, a DC 10 Swim check is required. If it's night, the low-tide lowers the DC to 8.

DC 10 Swim check:

DC 10 Swim check (failed):

You are not able of reaching the shipwreck, but you can try again.

If you have failed by 5 or more, you take 1d3 damages from the protruding sharp rocks.

It's long swim to reach the shipwreck. You have to succeed at a DC 5 Constitution check to swim without become too tired.

DC 5 Constitution check:

You manage to swim to the shipwreck without any problems.

DC 5 Constitution check (failed):

The swim was far too hard for your comforts. You are fatigued until you don't rest for at least 4 hours.

If you reached the shipwreck, you can explore the wreck with a Perception check. You can take 10 on this check. Taking 20 requires two hours of exploration (three if it's night) and will slow down the party (if it's night, you won't have the time to sleep enough time, and as such you won't recover hp damage, ability scores damage and recharge your spells and special abilities). You cannot use the aid another action. You can try again up to 3 times. If it night, you suffer a -2 penalty to your Perception check, even if you have torches and light spells at your disposal. If your character doesn't have a torch or cannot cast light for himself, his penalty increase to -4.

DC 20 Perception check:

You're able to uncover a flask of acid in a chest placed in the bosun's cabin. Your examination turns out also 5 gp, 19 sp and 10 cp. You're even able to spot the ship's name: "Tears of Grog".

You finally reach the main camp. When you arrive, Ishirou coldly welcomes you and with a nod he points towards Jask, who is nervously walking back and forth. As soon as the Garundi man spots you arriving, he rushes towards you and with an agitated voice he asks: "Oh, may Nethys be blessed, you arrive just in time! It's about Hakeem. I fear he has gotten into troubles. He has gone hunting this morning and he hasn't returned yet. Please, go and search him. I ask you this as a personal favor. Please...".

On the other side of the main camp, Gelik is busy cooking something. As soon as he spots you, he welcomes you with a gesture of his hand.

Aerys is lying at the feet of a large tree, maybe asleep.

Do you go and search Hakeem?

Given the disastrous results last time they explored a wreck, Alexite did not recommend doing so again. He looked at the wrecks and longingly thought of the treasures they may find but passed on the opportunity. Now there was only survival and getting off this island.

FYI, I'll be on the road today so don't expect anything from me until this evening/night. Alexite will later recommend that they do indeed look for Hakeem

Jesari folded her arms and shook her head as she looked out toward yet another wreck captured by the island. The girl bowed her head and whispered a short blessing for its sailors, even if the wreck didn't look recent. That spark of excitement and thrill for adventure had likely already taken hold of some her companions as they gazed out upon the ruined ship, and Jesari preemptively excluded herself from another trip into the ocean. "No. No way am I going out there. Never again."

Jesari blinked in disbelief, finding it hard to believe she was staring at yet another ship run aground. "This really makes you want to believe all those rumors about this place. There was only one thing on Jesari's mind as the camp came into view but Jask's demeanor was enough to stop her in her tracks. This wasn't like him. With a worried gasp at the delivered news, Jesari looked toward the others. This was definitely an emergency; Gelik was one thing but it wasn't like Hakeem to play around. "What do you guys think? Do you think you can find him?"

As the others debated, Jesari snuck away from the conversation and toward Aerys, tapping the half-elf gently on the shoulder to announce herself. "We got the berries for you..." Jesari sat down her backpack with a relieved groan, searching through it for her prize. "Well...it might be more accurate to say Alexite got the berries for you. He went through a lot for these - for you." Jesari stood up and looked over her shoulder at the rest of the group, already bending over to pick up her things once again. "Something might have happened to Hakeem and I think we're going to check it out. I'd like to talk more when we get back."

Council of Thieves Maps

Aerys smiles at Jesari, looking around herself before taking the berries from the girl. "Thank you Jesari...", she says with a pleasant smile before hugging Jesari. Her hug is indeed very strong, and maybe too little delicate. Embarassed for her own sudden emotional momentum, Aerys loosen her hug. "I hope you haven't told anything about my...problem to the others", says Aerys with a sigh. "I suppose I'll have to thank Alexite when you'll come back".

That said, Aerys leaves Jesari free to join her companions. Before she can leave, however, the half-elf whispers: "Oh, and nice hat you've got there...", before smiling again. Seems like Aerys was able to discern the nature of the object contained in Jesari's backpack without the girl having to extract it.

Of course, her jolly mood was cut short by the lack of food brought in from the hunt. "Rations are runnin' low," she noted solemnly.

When Jesari joins the group again, Alexite quickly focus his attention on trying to uncover a trail revealing Hakeem's steps. With the aid of his companions, the ranger has no difficulty to track down Hakeem's path*.

The group follows Hakeem's path for about half an hour, before coming out into a clearing with a cliff on its edge. Hakeem's body lies unconscious at the edge of the cliff. A group of 4 flying creatures are flying around Hakeem's body.

"Dimorphodons!", shouts Sasha, "We must drive them off from Hakeem's body, otherwise they'll poison him!". The red-headed girl darts towards the creatures, a fiery expression painted on her face as she exctracts her cutlass.

The dimorphodons are fast and reactive, and they're able to strike first. They immediately focus their attention on you. The creatures fly up in the air before suddenly diving against you.

The first dimorphodon comes at Kali'da, managing to bite her on her neck and injecting her with poison**.

Another dimorphodon attacks Sasha, but it misses its intended target.

A third dimorphodon charges headfirst into Alexite, but again it misses.

The last dimorphodon comes at Sizara, and it's able to bite the elven girl ***.

It is I that should apologize for making you swim when you weren't comfortable. And it was all for nothing. We'll stick to the task at hand from now on which is to get off this island."

He then adds as an after thought, "I'm not sure that I do know what is going on with Aerys. But if she has a problem, I wouldn't be telling everyone in any case. I really wish for everyone to start working together towards a common goal."

Alexite was momentarily undecided. he wanted to go and help Hakeem but the flying dinosaurs were attacking. In the end, barely dodging a flying creature made up his mind.

He tried to recall what Sasha said about these animals. He remembered that they were poisonous but were they territorial? Would they attack if they backed of? They certainly wouldn't be hunting a human?

He yelled at Sasha, "Sasha, are these like your Yellowing? Can we get them to stop attacking?"

Kali'da, Alexite and Sasha are able to hit their targets, while Sizara misses.

---

In the meantime, Sasha quickly tries to answer Alexite's question while defending herself from the dangerous creature: "They're docile when they're still young, but these are adult dimorphodons and we've invaded their territory. We need to fight!"

---

Seems like Jesari's spell didn't achieve its intended goal: the dimorphodon is still aggressive, and is now focusing his rage against Kali'da again.

The dimorphodons continue their attack. Alexite and Sasha proves reactive enough to deflect or avoid their bites, but Kali'da and Sizara get hit again *. The dimorphodon in front of Kali'da manage to hit the girl with its razor-sharp teeth, knocking the girl unconscious and with a bleeding wound opened on her neck.

---

Seein Kali'da going down, Sasha screams: "Someone help her! Let's fight together or we won't get out of here alive!". One moment after the girl swings at the dimorphodon in front of her with her cutlass, extracting a dagger in the process while she nimbly spins in whirling attack. "Move back, Alexite!", she shouts.

* Both Sizara and Kali'da takes 7 points of damage. Kali'da should be knocked unconscious by this second attack, and from the next round on she should be making Constitution checks to stabilize herself.

@Alexite: With that result I can't tell you much more about these creatures.

With Kali'da down, a flash of panic crossed Jesari's face. The sorceress let out a steadying breath and held a single hand out toward where Kali'da had fallen, preparing her next spell. It was a spell she had held off on using up until now out of fear of catching one of her allies in it but with Kali'da brought down by the creatures, she likely wouldn't even know what had happened. With a single word, a stream of painfully bright and mesmerizing colors flowed out from her hand, washing over the fallen priestess and two of the dinosaurs.

Casting color spray. I drew on the map where I want to cast it. Hopefully you can see it. Not sure how color spray works on unconscious people but I'm sure Kali'da will be fine even if it does work on her. On the bright side, you probably won't even notice if it does.

Kali'da:
While you're unconcious, you experience a vision as if in a dream.
You’re in a rowboat on the open ocean at night. Sitting across you, rowing the boat, is First Mate Alton. He’s obviously dead, with the wounds and stings his body displays on the wreck of the Jenivere, but still he rows. Eventually, the boat reaches an island covered with snakes. Alton waits as you exit the boat, standing ankle-deep in snakes, and then he turns and rows back out to sea, you assume off to look for more survivors to ferry to shore. But Alton never returns...

With one dimorphodon dealt with, Jesari gives a small pleased smile before dodging out of the way of the second more out of instinct and sheer luck rather than skill. When the last dimorphodon goes down, Sasha dries her forehead covered in sweat. Still wheezing, the girl looks at Alexite and says: "Alexite, is that a healing potion you got there?". Once the rangers answers, and if the answer is affirmative, Sasha goes on: "Please, lend me it."

If Alexite gives the potion to Sasha, the red-haired girl darts towards Kali'da and pours the potion in her mouth. "Come on Kali'da, resist!". Then, still leaning over Kali'da, Sasha whispers to her companions: "The potion should soon bring her back to us...or at least stop the bleeding".

Once a few seconds are passed, Sasha states: "She won't die. Her conditions are stable now, but we need to get her back to the camp. Jask will know what to do".

Back at the camp, Jesari was sitting by herself on a fallen tree, her head resting in one hand while she absently held onto her flute with the other. She had been like this for awhile, alternating between playing a few sorrowful tunes and quietly staring into the distance contemplating her situation. Death seemed to always be lingering over everyone's head but Hakeem's passing made it feel far too real. Jesari didn't want to die - not on this island anyway - and the comforting sound of music was but a momentary reprieve from her grim thoughts; her fingers would eventually come to move on their own from the years of practice, leaving her mind to wander down dark roads once again. Thinking was the last thing she needed to be doing right now.

Jesari approached Aerys after Jask's impromptu funeral, holding the captain's hat between fidgeting hands. "I wanted this to be a surprise but..." Jesari shrugs and offers an unenthusiastic smile to the half-elf. "Well, anyway...I thought you would like it. A captain's hat for the future captain."
