Appearance:
Hilde is an attractive blond dwarf with blue eyes and a ready smile. She's about 4'6" tall and muscular, usually wearing her long hair back in a braid or held back with a band colored to match her eyes. When she's performing her clerical duties she dresses in gold & green vestments, with bells hanging from a sash. Background/Personality:
Hilde isn't sure of much besides her first name when it comes to her blood family and clan, as she was recovered from the giants that had slaughtered her kin by a counterattacking band of dwarves. (As for why the giants had taken a few infants alive, it's best not to speculate.) When she was found the only thing with her was a partial baby blanket with her first name embroidered lovingly on it; the part with her clan name had been roughly torn away. This was not uncommon in the Mindspin Mountains, though, and in Janderhoff recovered dwarves of unknown clan had long ago formed their own clan: daughters and sons of the forge, the children of Torag. They adopted her and the others with her.
She grew up without parents, it must be said, but with enough aunts, uncles, and cousins that she never felt the lack. Whenever she was teased by other dwarves her age about her lack of a proper blood clan, the other Forgesons and Forgedottirs would hasten to reassure her that they chose her--that she was theirs because they wanted her. And so she learned that even though blood relations are important, family by choice is still family. (She's still occasionally curious about her blood family, though even if she found out who they were she's pretty sure she'd stay a Forgedottir. Even though her life turned out well, though, she hasn't forgotten what the giants took from her, and she's spent a considerable amount of effort over the years preparing to fight them.) As she grew into adulthood her common sense and force of personality--the latter quite atypical for a dwarf--blossomed, and it was clear that she was destined for the clergy. After spending time discussing her vocation with others, praying, and meditating upon passages in "Hammer and Tongs," she came to realize that because of her upbringing and history the demigoddess Bolka seemed to speak most clearly to her. And so the choice was made. Like her divine patron she takes joy in romantic love between others, and where she sees the possibility of that love she tries to nurture it (even in the face of social disapproval). Second only to that, though, is her joy in building up communities--settling disputes, smoothing over personal grievances, and when necessary administering a mace to the face of those who would tear it down. |
