I've been wanting to play as Red Mantis for a long time, so of course I was going to jump at this opportunity. Add in high level action and the writing of Vanessa Hoskins, who did such an incredible job on Abomination Vaults, and I knew we were in for something special. The fights were challenging but fair, giving us plenty of chances to use our higher-level feats and abilities. Treasures were legitimately valuable and came in very handy many times. The story was everything it promised to be, with a truly epic finale.
I'm not exaggerating when I say this is one of the best adventures I've ever played.
It's odd that the reviews for this pingpong between "this is awful" and "this is the best thing I've ever played".
I had GM'd a good bit of Society scenarios and this was my first time running something bigger. It was challenging to be sure, because of the vast wealth of story there was to be discovered, but I had a good time with it and my players enjoyed it.
To the people who complain that there are so many haunts: well yeah, it's a haunted house. There will be a few creatures who have made a home there but mostly you should expect to encounter ghosts and haunts. Yes, haunts can be a pain in the rear, but they can be dealt with like any trap or encounter.
Bottom line, excellent story and a challenging setting.
Big thanks to Paizo for putting out the map for it, I am so glad I bought it!
I picked the Derhii up as part of a blind box last weekend. I don't usually like blind boxes because I'd rather know what I'm getting, but Legends of Golarion has been pretty reliable so far. This was a very good purchase indeed.
The Derhii is a gorgeous figure. The detail on the wings especially is very well done and everything about it screams bad@$$. It's a flying ape with a massive sword! I immediately looked up its stats and was amazed to learn it is only a CR5 monster. My only real complaints are:
1. I am unlikely to ever actually play or face a Derhii, so it will just be a very pretty sub for whatever large creature I'm really using, and
2. As with all my other plastic minis, the sword tends to curve in odd directions.
These are very minor complaints however. Awesome figure!
