Male Half-Elf Cleric 1 / Fighter (Cad) 1
Oh my goodness! My browser has given me no indication that there were new posts in gameplay, even as it has consistently kept me updated about the discussion thread. I was wondering what people were talking about! Very sorry about this. I'll get myself up to date and back in the action.

As they descend the stairs, Ethaniel speaks softly to Sidara. Elven: "In sooth, I trust none but the Savored Sting, one who is already with you. I tell you this, and indeed I swear on Calistria's name that I am your ally this day. Yet what may chance if I come alone?"

"Are we not always wary? Does not the work we do require attention to every detail?" Ethaniel studies the elf in front of him, pondering an old temple saying. If a Calistrian wants you dead, you'll find yourself alive. His hand begins to shake. "A bath would do me well."

Why today? Ethaniel does not respond to Iscarel, but nods at Sidara, then turns from where he stands and walks up the stairs. When he arrives at his room, he opens his door, and stands just outside it as he waits for his guest to enter. Elven: "A welcome to you."

Gendarmes are thieves handed shining armor and legal writs...some crooked? All crooked! Ethaniel's thoughts come out as hushed mutterings. As he walks from the kitchen with some regained composure, Ethaniel turns to Tippy and taps him on the shoulder. "The words you spoke have just come together in my head. You have done me a kindness, and I appreciate it." He stares at the halfling for a moment longer, perhaps wishing to apologize for his earlier ungratefulness but finding no more words. Suddenly, he turns on his heel, and goes to his room. He looks under the bed, then in the wardrobe. He combs through ever drawer, pausing occasionally to listen carefully for a foreign sound. They've not been here...but they know Marcus, and shall know me as well if they come calling. Sting shield me when that time comes. Fifteen minutes after disappearing upstairs, Ethaniel reappears and assumes his shift, as if the gang attack and his panicked fit had never happened. His eyes, however, frantic, scan the room at their normal rate.

I'm not sure why I don't have Ethaniel's total weight listed, but I'll amend that tomorrow. It is certainly more than 210 lbs, I'm afraid. Ethaniel murmurs as his senses begin to return. Hearing voices, he sits up suddenly, grasping desperately for his whip before falling over on his side again clumsily. Oh no! They've taken me! Tremors take his hands and legs as he tries to push himself to his knees.

As hard as he sprints, Ethaniel cannot keep pace with the other three, though they are still in his sight when they reach the Goblin. The Goblin...almost safe. But it's not safe! Nowhere is safe! They've seen you! You fool! How could you let them see you!? Doubling over, Ethaniel wretches in the street, then stumbles up against a nearby building. They're still coming! Go! When he at last reaches the door to the gambling hall, Ethaniel freezes. Surely the gendarmes knew me, and have sent their agents ahead. They've ransacked my room, it's sure. Have to think...I'll just...there...I'll just lie down over there. Ethaniel's world spins as he takes labored steps to a nearby stack of crates topped with folded burlap. Under here...I'll stop and think, just for a moment. Thirty seconds after he pulls the cloth over himself, he is out cold. Ethaniel is just outside the Golden Goblin, though partially concealed, and unconscious.

I hear all that, but Ethaniel has a deep-seeded, irrational fear of the gendarmes. He ran in to back up the group against the gang. If we were facing Marcus's demonic adversary, Ethaniel would have his friend's back. The gendarmes are a different story, though. In fifteen years of what basically was indentured servitude in Riddleport, Ethaniel learned little more than to hate his uncle and fear the gendarmes. A month or two ago, he revenged himself on his uncle, dumped the body, and has been a paranoid mess since. He hasn't shared this with any of his new companions, but even seeing the gendarmes sets Ethaniel very much on edge. Getting chased by them has raised the level of panic significantly, well past logic. Of the four possible directions, he sees gendarmes in two of them, and the the gang that just tried to murder him and his friends in the third. I am a big believer in "play nice with others," and I've wrestled with the decision because out-of-character, I realize it's not a team-player move, but the action is at the core of who my character is, and I gotta go with it. That doesn't mean he'll get away though. Medium armor = slow half-elf...

I know this is a terrible idea, but I've put a lot of thought into it, and any way I look at it, I can't imagine Ethaniel not running. Ethaniel doesn't even look in the direction of the gendarme's command. He turns on his heel and runs as fast as he can. Run to DB35.

No no no no no no no! Gendarmes! No no no! A look in my eye and they'll see everything. They'll know all about Henri, and the cook in the box at the docks! No! They'll wrest me down and string me up, and all the scum of Riddeport will come to see hang there. 'Henri's whelp,' they'll say, and laugh. No! I can't...they can't...run, idiot, run! Ethaniel's head whips back and forth, and visions of the gendarmes dance at the edge of his vision. They're swarming all around! Too late! He turns towards Marcus. You! You you you you! It was you who charged in again! It was you I trusted! You! Now we're all dead! Ethaniel takes a step towards Marcus, gesturing furiously, but when he lays a trembling hand on the ranger's side, healing energy comes forth from it. I didn't kill anybody...not one! Run, idiot! Run, and leave these fools! No! Too late...too late. Put the weapon aside. Put it aside... Ethaniel spends a move action to coil his whip and place it on his belt. He then takes a 5-Foot Step to DM46 and expends Remove Fear to cast Cure Light Wounds on Marcus. Cure Light Wounds - 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 I know that Tippy and Tam need the heal just as much, if not more, but I think Marcus is our best chance at surviving the encounter at this point, as his favored enemy bonus is making a big difference.

I have mixed feelings about it, as I don't want the others to leave Tippy high and dry, but I think I do need to get off some healing before those three thugs act again. A 5-Foot Step will still let Tam and Marcus full attack. "Ascaria, come my way!" Ethaniel calls out to his companions. "Marcus! Tam! They've drawn you too far! Step back!" The half-elf clutches at his holy symbol, preparing to call forth positive energy. As Waife recommended, Ethaniel will move to DR42 and ready an action to Channel Energy.

How far and long can we run that they will not pursue us? Ethaniel's hand slides to his belt and he hooks his buckler to his forearm. And I thought it would end with my feet hanging above open air, gendarmes all around... Move action to draw buckler, and another to move to DW53.
Male Half-Elf Cleric 1 / Fighter (Cad) 1
Though Marcus calls him off, Tam is pressed to a wall... Ethaniel slides over to the side of the building, putting himself between Ascaria and the man who cries out. His whip dances out on front of him as he tries to give his ally an opening to move. Ethaniel moves to U13 and attempts to disarm the thug in V10. Bless +1, Strength +3, BAB +1, Masterwork +1, Weapon Focus +1, Weapon Quality (Disarm) +2 Disarm (Whip) vs. CMD - 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22 "Part! This is at an end!"

My understanding is as Tippy's: the trip replaces the melee attack, so the roll is against the enemy's CMD, and success will result in that enemy falling prone (and not in any damage). On combat maneuver success: If your attack roll equals or exceeds the CMD of the target, your maneuver is a success and has the listed effect. The word "attack roll" leads me to think that you make a single roll, as your attack, and that determines the result. Were it two separate rolls, I believe it would specify "CMB roll," and have additional language about the need to hit the target first. I can find nothing in the entries about reach weapons or whips that amends the above, but I may have missed something. As for Ethaniel's placement, he should indeed be in V16, right below Tam. It was late, and my weary eyes drifted as I was determining the square on the grid. The whip has a 15-foot reach, so the trip should still be valid.
