"Hey, Poogie... *chomp chomp chomp*," Chuffy begins, his mouth full of food, "You did real good against Vorka... *nom nom nom*... she regret day she ever came back to kill Birdcruncher chiefs.... *slurp slurp slurp*.... but she do great job of roasting pork.... *crunch crunch crunch*.... poor, juicy, tender Squealy Nord..." Chuffy uses his dogslicer to pick bits of Squealy out of his teeth.

@Jack: Thanks a heap for helping with the resolution to that one. Please don't take our gripes as anything like a complaint on you... it was a turd of an encounter to throw at pregens especially.

Bolded section is mine. If that's the only place you've got that compares the two, then I would suggest that they are definitely different.

I know it only refers to AC, but still. At the very least, RAW is still unclear about this. I actually think this is a good FAQ candidate. May find the appropriate spot to post this question on the boards.

"Moggie! Your flames do nothing," screams Chuffy, "Heal Poogie, he figured out how to damage this thing! Chuffy not know what he did, but it hurt Vorka-thing!"

With Poog down, Chuffy makes no more Squealy Nord puns. He just focuses and... Oh, sh*t! Vorka looking at Chuffy like Chuffy only oppon... en...t.... Realizing that he will no longer be able to sneakily slide his dagger into a weak spot when the monstrosity is distracted, Chuffy flees pell-mell for the trees (full withdraw). Upon reaching a suitably sized trunk, he tries to disappear from view.

Chuffy stealth: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (12) + 20 = 32

Trusting to his sneakiness, Chuffy then very quietly rises up for a better view, drawing his crossbow as he goes.

The goblin is too stupid to put out the flames that have now set fire to his spider's wooden cage.

Chuffy, basting: 1d6 ⇒ 2

... and I really would like to thrash out the RAW on hardness vs energy reduction for animated objects in the discussion thread. I understand this is how it is ruled for the rest of this encounter... but I wouldn't mind if a certain level 4 rules lawyer helped me to thrash it out. For... y'know, the... <redacted>... that I may or may not be running.

Oh, fire damage!

Chuffy doesn't so much continue to burn as his pimples continue to boil against his face.

On fire!: 1d6 ⇒ 2

"Ow! Chuffy is basting in his own puss! Oh, sorry, Chuffy not mean to say 'basting'. Poor, well-cooked Squealy. Hey, you think he's done yet?"

Chuffy squeals as the flames sear his body. "Oh, sorry Poogie. Chuffy not mean to say 'squeal'! Poor, aromatic Squealy."

Secretly angry at the death of the only 'chief' who never picked on him, Chuffy tries to stab Vorka-thing as viciously as he knows how.

Damage, sneak attack: 1d4 + 2d6 ⇒ (3) + (5, 4) = 12

By the by, Chuffy does 2 bleed damage... but I'm fairly sure that doesn't work here. Yet another nerf, eh? If it does though...!

Chuffy dutifully drops to the ground and rolls twenty times. He stands back up with a very confused look on his face.

"Who told Chuffy to do that?" asks the goblin, looking up at the sky.

Yeah, I think the confusion is over "is a construct an object too", specifically in the "animated object" context. I don't believe there is anywhere in RAW that says they are... just in the title "animated object". However, magical beasts are not real "beasts" (since their subtype is "magical beast" not "animal") and as such are not subject to the same stuff that animals are (like speak with animals, etc). It's their type that matters, and an animated object's type is construct... and for that, they have construct traits. They are no longer an object in the same way that a robot is no longer an collection of metal objects, it has transcended.

Unless I've missed a written rule somewhere that says they need to be both, that is how I will treat them in the purely hypothetical situation where I may or may not throw one at the players a game that I may or may not be running in the future.

Okay, I promise that will be my last attempt to convince the GM not to kill us.

As for the scenario design... calling for knowledge (arcana) when none of the pregens have one feels like more than just an oversight, it feels... sloppy. This is a Free RPG Day Module, not Bonekeep. It should help promote roleplaying, not teach players how f*cked up and deeply situationally unfair the Pathfinder rules can be at times.

@Karma: Vorka is indeed from WBG1. She's a cannibal. Pretty fun NPC. Much more fun than an massive hard to damage construct.

I've sent a few texts to Jack about being unsure where RAW says that animated objects are treated as both objects and constructs. I believe they become constructs and cease to be treated as objects. Also, the energy reduction is a property of objects, and not a result of hardness (it just interacts with hardness). I also have a cause beyond rules lawyering for wanting to know this... but don't want to reveal what cause that is for my own nefarious reasons.

Assuming that the original ruling stands, my retcon is as follows:

... shoots off like a stuck pig to the other side of the Vorka effigy, drawing his blade as he goes and ducking her attacks.

Chuffy acrobatics to avoid AoO, vs Vorka's CMD: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31

"Die again! Vorka the Porker! Oh, sorry, me not mean to say 'porker'. Poor, scrumptious Squealy..." Chuffy continues annoyingly.

If that actually hurts the thing, Chuffy will yell, "Moggie! Pass Poogie back his wand of firepigs if you don't know how to use it!!!! Oh, sorry, Chuffy not mean to say 'firepigs'. Poor, delicious, Squealy. Chuffy going to get away from all this crackling fire. Oh, sorry, Chuffy not mean to say 'crackling'. Poor, tasty, Squealy. Okay, enough funny business, getting out of here. Hope you can save Chuffy's bacon. Oh, sorry, Chuffy not mean to say 'bacon'..."

The insufferable goblin makes to run away. However, despite his furiously pumping legs, he makes absolutely no progress. He looks down to notice that he is floating a few inches above the ground. Chuffy quickly wills himself back to the ground while his legs are still flapping, and shoots off like a stuck pig (sorry, Damien not mean to say 'stuck pig') into the underbrush. Once there, he finds a quick hiding spot and then floats up so that he's got a nice little assasin's perch above the treeline. On the way, he draws his crossbow and starts fingering his flaming crossbow bolts (double move, drawing as free action).

Chuffy doesn't seem to be in the mood for truffle cakes just yet. Perhaps because he hasn't smelled them yet. He kicks at stones on the way back to the cave. Is the life of the chief meant to be this boring? Chuffy had heard of another goblin tribe that got to lead a raid on Sandpoint. Now that sounded like fun! Chuffy heaves a massive sigh, causing his acne to ooze slightly, and continues to trudge along back to the caves.

"Poogie? If we still bored tomorrow, can we kill tribe?" Chuffy isn't even close to joking, "Oh, and Moggie, please coat Chuffy's weapon again. Chuffy thinks it came off on the vine." 'Please'? 'Please'?!!?! Something is seriously wrong with Chuffy. Chuffy is so boooooooooored he's using manners.

Survival assist: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8 -- I take it we can assist with this, yeah?

Chuffy starts helping Squealy Nord out with the truffle hunt, but the pimply goblin quickly grows bored and starts squishing facial craters instead. "Hey Squealy! Did you see that? That's what I call a 'Poog Blaster'. It shot out at least... erm... five thousand feet!"

Eventually, Chuffy sits on the ground and starts moaning about how dull this is. He then notices the potion labelled 'potion of fruitiliciousness'. It sounds good, so he takes a sip to see if it truly is a nice tasting potion, or if Poogie and Moggie just got it wrong again.

Chuffy shakes his head to clear out the cobwebs and the sound of singing. "Chuffy kind of misses her now she's dead," he notes forlornly, "Ah well, let's go see what was in that silo of hers. Poogie, you can fix yourself, right?"

Chuffy waits until his priest has fixed himself, and then he'll quietly and sneakily head up to the grain silo to look for treasures. Then he'll burn it to the ground.

Chuffy saunters back over to where the feathered siren is.

Singing lovely melody,

"Come back here you juicy thing -

Chuffy was going to give Poog one of his minty-fresh potions of healing, but instead he is drawn to this magnificent voice! The goblin bursts pimples in an effort to clear his face up for whatever divine beauty is conjuring such a magnificent sound. He attempts to add his own voice to the song...

Sorry Poog, but Chuffy really did throw all the mushrooms there fully knowing that it was what they were looking for. Stinkin' humies touched them.

Chuffy attempts to remove the last mushroom that Poog managed to save from Squealy Nord. Not gonna eat dirty mushrooms touched by longshanks...

Sleight of hand: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16

If he gets the mushroom without Poog noticing, he lets Squealy chow down.

On the way to the truffle hunt, Chuffy moves over to Mogmurch, "Hey Moggie, you gonna help me out? Chuffy want poison on blade. Please? Stankrush been bitting little vials you give him real good - got lots now! Chuffy make sure you get bigger slice of pie."

Chuffy's sheet says he's learned to cooperate with Mogmurch and gets him to apply the poison to his blades now (Mogmurch auto succeeds at this). I'd like to poison my blade and three crossbow bolts.

"Chuffy check out silo, you pick boring mushrooms," says the pimply goblin. Being naturally cowardly and cautious, he creeps up to the ruined silo to scout things out. He remains hidden as best he can (ie. if he can't find cover, he won't go there, preferring to look from a distance).

As the fireball incinerates everyone in the clearing, Chuffy takes a moment to pause and think. Ah, this is the reason Chuffy hasn't killed Poogie yet. That wand won't last forever, though...

Chuffy rushes in and starts rummaging through the treasures. He flings the truffles in Squealy Nord's direction and starts chomping on the ham, mouth open, so the pig can get a good look at it. He draws out the corpse of toad, 'Fat Frog', who has long ago died of starvation. It is almost completely dried up now, frog skin stretched taut between its brittle bones. "No food for you, Fat Frog. Have you put on weight? Naughty froggy! You still on diet!"

Then Chuffy spies the greatest treasure of all. "Toe scratcher is mine!" he screams and grabs the oversized implement. The disgusting goblin kicks off his boot, revealing a foot covered sores and boils. "Aaaaaaahhhhhh...." he moans delightedly as he uses the implement. Pus and blood erupt from various places on his foot and begin to make the ground stink like dead badger.

"So, back home?" suggests Chuffy, "Tell followers how awesome we are, eat horsies and then kill whole tribe to relieve boredom. Sound like plan? Oh, right, truffles."

Stealth again, if I need it: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (12) + 20 = 32

Moved Chuffy on the tactical. Plan is to have a readied action to fire his crossbow for "when shıt hits the fan".

Horsies? Doggies? Oh dear... oh dear!

Chuffy does what comes naturally and hides. Drawing his crossbow and leaving his companions behind, he creeps ever closer to the stinking humies. Chuffy takes special care to be downwind of the animals as he gets closer.

Chuffy stealth: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (15) + 20 = 35

Chuffy sees the goblin heads on pikes. Cool. Chuffy starting to like these longshanks. Too bad for them that Chuffy is bored.

"First, the boring story... now we need to pick mushrooms," Chuffy grouses, "Chuffy gonna kill someone else today. If longshanks no give Chuffy excitement, Chuffy find another thing to kill..." Just in case he could be accused of being subtle, Chuffy eyes off Mogmurch and Poog in turn while licking his newly enchanted dogslicer.

He only cuts his tongue up a little.

Yes indeed! Let's do this.

"Poogie, what's he saying? Chuffy can't speak pig," the annoying goblin wines, "Poogie lucky, he speak pig from birth! Haw!"

Despite having no means of communicating with Squealy, Chuffy jostles for a position at the forefront. He wanted to hear every squeak and grunt. By Zarongel's severely singed holy pubic hair I'm bored with being a chief!

Chuffy was just about to fire off his fireworks right at Poog when what the fūck happened to my post??!?! the dirty, rotten, cheating priest is declared the winner.

Chuffy grins as he watches the other goblins taking their aim. The pimply rogue lines up a shot at Poog...

"Bwa ha ha ha ha ha!!!" Chuffy laughs, despite being bitten, when Poog and Mogmurch finally cross the line, "Chuffy is the greatest! Poogie and Moggie must love taste of mud and feeling of brambles. Moggie worse rider even than Poogie! Bwa ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!"

Chuffy thinks hard about the targets. Remembering previous challenges, the greedy goblin tries to "steal" the most points first.

So sad that they gave Poog a ride skill... or did they? So happy that Steve's dice came to his character's rescue (development-wise).

"Haw haw!" laughs Chuffy with glee as he see's Poog true to form on his attempt to ride an animal, "What that you say yesterday, 'Me Poogie, me learn how ride animals now! Me bestest rider in world!' Haw haw! Poogie still like mud better than animal's back. Poogie, 'Great Chief Mud Rider'! Haw! Here, Chuffy show you how it is done."

With practiced ease, Chuffy climbs onto the goblin dog. It smells so much better than regular dog. Without a saddle, though, Chuffy's constantly erupting facial volcanoes are making the dog's fur slick and matted. It is quite tricky to hold on, but the mean-spirited goblin is too caught up in showing up Poog to truly pay attention to what is going on.

"Chuffy going to beat Poogie! Chuffy knows how to make goblin dogs go real fast!" he yells, taunting his chief. Once on the back of the dog, Chuffy sticks it in the backside with his dogslicer and clings on for dear life.

Chuffy ride, no saddle: 1d20 + 13 - 5 ⇒ (16) + 13 - 5 = 24

EDIT: That'll teach me to post in gameplay before reading discussion!

Chuffy's stuck mount is running so fast, it easily leaps over the mud pit that Poog seems to have fallen into. Chuffy giggles uncontrollably at the fate of his comrade.

He almost doesn't see the narrow ridge until it is too late.

Chuffy ride (Ridge Racer), no saddle: 1d20 + 13 - 5 ⇒ (11) + 13 - 5 = 19

Sticking the dog in its other flank, Chuffy manages to guide it close enough to the wall that it not only makes the narrow ridge, but it does so at great speed. Howling with joy, Chuffy rounds upon the gnome. Weapon already in hand, he digs his knees in to his dog's sides and gets the extra reach he needs to take a swipe at the gussied-up pumpkin.

Dogslicer damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1 -- Phew!

"Die silly gnome!" Chuffy is really starting to enjoy this game. Chuffy stabs his dog once more for good measure and it charges off down the ridge.

Chuffy pulls up, hard, on the dog's mane and it leaps gracefully over the brambles. The wicked goblin leaps from the dog's back and cheers himself on, "Chuffy is the greatest! Other chief's are losers!" he yells loudly before crying out in pain as the sliced-up goblin dog bites him in the breeches.

"Okay, getting bored now. Next story!" he yells, sitting back in his chair, "Poogie, maybe this one will tell you something with flames in it and you can burn him!" Chuffy rubs his hands at the prospect of burning. Oh, how he loves burning. Almost as much as he loves stabbing.

"This axe stink of stunty flesh," Chuffy complains. Nevertheless, he puts his dogslicer away and picks up the ridiculously oversized waraxe in both hands.

"Chuffy warning you, if other part of story come true... then Chuffy chop head off again..." struggling for grip with his flesh juice coating his hands, Chuffy does his best to line up a very messy shot...

"Chuffy like this game!" the sadistic little goblin jumps up from his puss-encrusted chief-chair, "Chuffy want to play." Chuffy draws his dogslicer - now magically enchanted by Mother-Whatever-Her-Name-Was. The pustulent goblin advances on Mothmangler Munge.

"Now, Mothmangler already dressed as Great Green Goblin King," Chuffy notes, "Chuffy play part of longshanks lord. This no axe, but it do the job!"

Here's a quick little idea I had... make lay on hands 1d4*level*Cha bonus. If the paladin wants to heal someone, he states a number of dice and rolls them. All other uses of lay on hands (cure disease, heal ability damage, etc.) use dice of healing instead of uses/day - cure disease would use 2 dice, remove curse 3, etc.

So I had this idea about immunity to crits and sneaks. Immunity sucks - it's a gamebreaker, and it makes certain classes (rogues) pretty well useless.

The idea: creatures that normally have immunity gain minor, lesser, or greater resistance. Minor would be 1/2 damage on sneaks and 1 less multiplier on crits (so a greataxe would do x2 damage on a crit instead of x3); lesser is 1/3 damage and 2 less; greater is 1/4 damage and 3 less.

Elementals and oozes* would get greater resistance; constructs and undead have lesser; and plants would have minor. Incorporeal creatures are still immune.

*Oozes have greater resistance to crits and immunity to sneaks because of their lack of a discernable anatomy.

On a semi-related note, I was thinking about crits on the way home from work, and I came up with another idea for dealing with them. Let's face it - randomly-rolled crits kinda suck. You roll a nat 20, confirm the crit... and roll minimum damage. WTF? So I thought of this:

Either the first die of damage is automatically maxed (so a longsword deals 8+1d8 damage),

or all but the last die of damage are maxed. For example, a greataxe (x3) would deal 20+1d10; a scythe (x4) would deal 24+2d4.

I'm not sure about the second option, since it would make high-crit weapons exceptionally powerful, but I think at least the first die should be maxed, to properly reward rolling a critical hit.

As I was looking over enervation and energy drain a little while ago, I had an idea. Energy drain is kind of cool, but negative levels are stupid - even with them being simplified in 3.5, it's still more stuff to keep track of, AND you lose XP if they become "permanent".

So, I thought, why not just make it hit point drain? The number of hit points drained depends on your HD type: 1 (1d4), 2 (1d6), 3 (1d8), 4 (1d10), or 5 (1d12). In the case of multiclass PCs, negative levels are always taken from the highest class first; if that class is drained to 0 levels, then it starts on the next highest, etc. If two or more classes are equal, then it goes with the highest HD. 24 hours after losing the HD/hit points, you make a second Fort save as normal or lose them permanently. If the creature's effective HD total is reduced to 0, or its hp total to 0 (or negative Con score for PCs), it dies.

Lost hit points can be recovered at the rate of 1 HD's worth per day of rest; a lesser restoration will restore 1d4 HD, restoration 1d6+1, and greater 1d8+2 (the latter two will restore permanently lost hp).

In any case, there are NO other penalties applied. Since the spell is not actually draining HD/levels, there is no need for it.

I've been looking over the death spells, seeing how I can change them to not be so "save or suck".

Now, one thing I've done is to change the death/dying rules so that a) you die when you hit negative Con score, not -10; and b) each round, you make a Con check to stabilize; if the check succeeds by 0-5, there's no change; if it's 6+, you go to 0 hp, and if it fails, you lose 1 hp. 3 failures and you die.

So, with death spells, what I did is instead of "save or die", it's "save or be reduced to dying, but you automatically fail the stabilize rolls". Which means there's still a good chance of dying if your friends don't get to you in time.

One other idea I'm toying with (and the reason I'm posting this) is putting a HD cap on what can be affected by a given spell level (like the damage caps). For instance, circle of death is L6; it affects 1d4 HD/level (20d4 max), with a 9 HD cap. So what I suggest is:

L6 single-target: 12 HD; multi-target: 9 HD

L7 single-target: 15 HD; multi-target: 12 HD

L8 single target: 18 HD; multi-target: 15 HD

L9 single target: 21 HD; multi-target: 18 HD.

These caps are for arcane and divine - there's no difference.

Thus, a spell like wail of the banshee could kill up to 1 creature/level that has no more than 18 HD.
