Cahal takes in Ben's advice, while feeling lifted by Nidhi's. The fake mummy is too close for the spear, so Cahal drops it with a hint of regret. She lifts her hands for defence and finds the right position for her fingers to stab instead of punch at the creature and slides to her left to flank with Zilchus. Free action for Martial Flex and gain Hamatulatsu for piercing damage. Brawler's Flurry (piercing) with IC, flank, and Prayer: 1d20 + 13 - 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 13 - 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 341d8 + 7 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 7 + 2 + 1 = 14
Confirm?: 1d20 + 8 - 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 8 - 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 241d8 + 7 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 7 + 2 + 1 = 15
Cahal is losing it. The darkness, the fire traps, the lack of progress, the tension within the group finally get to her. "You know what, this is too much. I can't believe the Dark Depository, as hard to find as it is, also has a secret archive! I mean, a secret archive within the secret archive, within the secret archive. I bet once we find it, it will have another secret archive!" and she phases out, no longer interested. Only when Nidhi moves towards the sarcophagus to open it does she stir. She gets back up on her feet and grabs her spear: "Ok, bored to death is one way to die, but this one I can fight back! Be ready!"
Finally, Cahal notices the scrolls through the cobwebs and curses at herself for being and looking so foolish. Then she realizes no one picked up on it and just shrugs her discomfort away, shoulders relaxing. "No climbing for me then... Say, this guy got in trouble for searching the Sky Pharaoh too much!? I wonder why that is... I mean, no one seems to care anymore." "Oh, and are we going to open those sarcophagi? I suggest we don't. They're always full of surprises. Nasty. Surprises."
"By Osiris, with all the scrolls you would expect in a library, you wonder why they would blow fire bombs all the time... Speaking of which, are there any scrolls in this forsaken place!!! I'm starting to think this is where they send nosy people to get rid of them. Promise them forbidden lore, set up a few nasty traps, and voilà!" Cahal mumbles as they make their way. When she reaches the Hall of Lost Curators, the hair on her arms rises and she shivers: "I don't like this place... And still no scrolls..." Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22
"This place has more trap than a discussion with a Calistrian priestess!" mumbles Cahal, exasperated and wondering if they would survive this place. "This is extreme scholarship..." she comments. "Ok, tell me where you want me. Right, I'll have your back then, but may I suggest we keep Ben in a safer spot than he suggests. I don't mean to be rude, but his talents lie elsewhere than taking fire blasts in the face, am I wrong?"

Thanks! Saving for items, that brought me back a bit to 2nd ed. when we had to do so when we missed certain saves. It would bring the table to a grind, and players with scrolls to tears!" Cahal shrugs as Ben states the obvious. No miracle then, she thinks. "Right. Then Nidhi, may I suggest you go in first and try to find traps before they find us? You can be roped, and I can follow you closely in case something comes at us?" she suggests. I hope something comes at us! I need to hit something... and she looks at Zilchus, then bursts out laughing nervously. "Right. Let's go? Sad face then!" she says, impatiently. Reflex: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 Cahal is shot backwards, taking the full force of the conflagration. Singe and smoking, she spits blood and curses: ”What a sh!thole! I swear, the first thing that attacks us will regret the day Lamashtu gave it birth!” As she takes in the strange configuration of the place and its challenges, her mood darkens further: ”Really!? Sloped hallways? Ben?” and looks at the wizard, expecting some kind of arcane miracle.

Cahal listens in silence, concentrating on not making things worse. As long as people were moving towards the right place, time or deadly danger may solve things better. Instead, during their trek, she tries to keep an eye for other assassins lurking in the dry shadows. When they finally make it, she lets a sigh of relief and simply makes sure to smile and not let Zilchus leave or slap or twist fingers. It seemed he had the princess' attention, which was a great boon to the group.
Cahal looks to Nidhi, then the guard. For a moment, she considers fighting, fleeing, but decides to relent and accept to accompany the guard: "Nidhi, you find the others. I'll accompany this man with my assassin and press formal charges. As you were not the target, but I, we do not need you for now. I'll find you guys later..." And if the guard accepts, she'll part and follow him to the nearest station.
Cahal shrugs and adds, puffing up her demeanour as she speak: "This man is a captive. He tried to kill us and we need to bring him to our patron, the royal and regal Muminofra. You'd best help us carry him there, lest your head ends on the pointy head of a stick, watching her collection of exquisite exotic bird with glazed eyes..." Cahal hurries to tie up the assassin before he wakes and kicks his lights out for good measure. (Non-lethal damage) To Nidhi: "Let's go! Quickly! Yes, before the guards arrive! Find me a big carpet if you can." and charges the tied up assassin on her back. "He can't talk, but perhaps he can write..." she comments and takes off with her charge, hoping to get lost in the crowd.
"By the Old Gods! Did this guy just try to kill me?!" blurts Cahal as she fails to think and rushes at the assassin. If she can reach him and attack, she'll use her Knockout ability. If not, she'll just double move and stay as close to him as possible to prevent another bolt. Cahal lets the others speak, but she is certainly surprised to find someone in here. Though why not? Perhaps it was just a matter of getting the right permission? Finally, she can't help herself and blurts out, intrigued and awkward: "Hmm... You come here often? I mean, I am Cahal, from Wati, and this is my first time here..."
Cahal watches the guardian with awe. Then realizes it could only be some kind of demonic creature from another world. She had heard of those, djinns and whatnot, but to see one in the flesh, and to see it act as a mere guard?! Semi-frozen, she tries to prepare her mind for the possibility of battling such a creature, and dying doing so...
"Aaaand they're just looking for an excuse to kick us out. So yes, let's not give them an arm to twist as they please..." Cahal comments. As they head back, she lingers behind a bit to look at Zilchus and say: "Our responsibility is to guard the front. You should be there with me. We get cut down first. That's the deal. That's our lot." Then she takes up her position at the front, guarding Nidhi. Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (5) + 13 = 18
Cahal is all smiles. Bureaucracy could spell death even for the greatest of warriors, her former husband used to complain, and this day, bureaucracy she had vanquished. She felt a little proud when the massive door swung open, probably because she never thought it would; that some long forgotten clause in some long forgotten policy prevented their success. But no. Packed like four mules, she makes her way through the portal, feeling as light as a sprite.
Cahal takes a deep breath, but otherwise just glares at the library clerk, then at Zilchus and Ben. Things were not going as well as she thought they would. She turns to Florence and Nidhi: "Right. Looks like the boys need to bond or live their teenage years. Once more. I say we go shopping. Make sure we have food, water, and everything else we might need so we can stay day and night. You think our climbing gear is up to par? What else can we expect?" "In any case, we already bought a lot before going to the library, so maybe we can take it easy. But not here. And not with them..."
Cahal watches with interest Zilchus as he elbows Nidhi in the wall. Without wanting to, she turns analytical and studies Zilchus' move with a critical eye. Overall, she's pleasantly surprised. The man has skill empty handed, though Nidhi should have been able to protect her throat a little better... Then she shrugs, watches him storm off with Ben in his wake. To Florence and Nidhi, she says: "Right. I'm with you guys. We have three days in the fancy library. We shoudl camp there, if you ask me, bring everything, food, drinks, mattresses, the works, so that we can make the most of the time. Why don't we start by getting all we need. I can do that and carry it to the library, while you figure the paperwork. I just need you to give me a list." As she gets the list and leaves to do some shopping, she comments flatly: "I can't believe the bookworm walked away from this." |
