Round 2 Initiative 8, AC 12, hp 14/14
Fiendish Dog: Initiative 8, AC 13, hp 13, rd 1/2.
With an infernal word, Bealzius sends the beast snarling at the Ankheg, attempting to distract it from Raven long enough for him to get a good hit in or retreat, as necessary.
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Bealzius himself conjures a glob of acid from the lower hells, flinging it at the closest target.
1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 - 4 = 3 (if in melee)
1d3 ⇒ 1 acid
Okay... I'll keep playing until you find a replacement, it just might be at sporadic times, due to schedule conflicts. :P
Initiative 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Round 1 Initiative: 8, AC: 12, HP: 14/14, Conditions: Inspired
Bealzius uses his scroll to summon an infernal dog. As he unfurls the paper and the sound of chanting fills the air, a gleaming red line of a summoning circle appears infront of him. Threx runs around the circle, sniffing the edges and squeaking excitedly.
Please read my post on the discussion thread. My schedule is pure chaos these days.
I'm afraid I'm going to have to drop out of the game. I can't keep up with posting every four to eight hours (like most of you do), not with two jobs and my other gaming schedule. :P And rather than lag behind like I've been doing, I figure I would step out and let someone else play who can post that often.
Perception
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Bealzius has been silent most of this time (actually I've been at work, and then without an internet connection for a few hours), ruminating on the problem, which has presented itself to him as a vast logic problem. Threx, at least, chirps and squeaks occasionally from his cage, though apparently not enough to alarm the others. (He's a quiet compsognathus. :)
Bealzius examines the book carefully, attempting to understand the magical writing that was present there.
Spellcraft
1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
"Regretfully, madam, spells of linguistic knowledge are not in my repertoire." Bealzius sighs to himself. "And I personally have had no reason to study the goblin tongue. Perhaps someone in the town can speak it."
"That's the thing about the undead in this town."
Bealzius thoughtfully strokes his beard as he continues.
"They don't attack with a plan, they just seem to wander about and attack at random. In other words, this attack was not an intelligent or thoughtful one, just.... marginally effective. It is a masterful way to introduce elements of chaos into warfare, and for students of chaos, or demonology, it has a way of praising the beauty of the unplanned far more than any strategic attack."
Bealzius nods.
"And then convert him to the One True Faith, painfully if necessary."
Bealzius looks at Threx, who makes a chirping noise as he looks back.
"I wish those things would stop exploding. It would be easier to look over a zombie's body and identify any arcane marks on it. That might give us some clue as to what is causing them to rise up."
Round 2, HP 14/14, AC 12
Bealzius moves to a safer distance, then turns and fires another ray of positive energy at the undead creature, confident that even if it hits a living creature by mistake, it wouldn't do anything to them.
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21 for 1d6 ⇒ 3 positive energy damage.
Is the -4 penalty for firing into melee due to the attempt to not hit an ally, or more due to a called shot mechanic? If it applies, subtract 4 from the attack roll above.
Round 1: AC 12, hp 14/14
Bealzius spies the wolf along with everyone else.
Initiative 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
"Although I can't be certain, I'd say that's a zombie."
He looks around for more, but hopes there aren't any.
Perception 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Casting disrupt undead
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 for 1d6 ⇒ 5
Bealzius blanches when Lucrezia begins stuffing paper into bags and containers, but he grits his teeth and proceeds to place any loose papers between the pages of his spellbook, and otherwise to stack books by size and weight.
Sorry, work.
Bealzius also searches the room, with detect magic. He looks over the books and scrolls, trying to determine what they are mainly about.
Perception(20)
20 + 1 = 21
Bealzius is in his assigned position.
Bealzius grumbles only slightly about leaving his military support behind, but he follows the group on foot. Threx, at least, gets to ride in his cage.
Bealzius and Threx approach carefully on the back of their combat steed, though he does not venture past Marc or those well-keyed for combat.
Bealzius strokes his beard as he contemplates the possibilities. "Not necessarily. But we shall go with that tactic for now, and change it if need be later."
"Remember, we are dealing with a strange necromantic power. The undead have unusual powers and abilities. Whatever we find down there, expect nothing to be as you think it should be."
Heal another 2 hp from rest.
Spells prepared: summon monster I, mage armor, infernal healing, grease
I also use my last vial of unholy water to cast infernal healing on myself, restoring myself to full hitpoints unless something dramatic and deadly happens within that 1 minute. 14/14
I took average.
Perception
1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14
Threx's Perception
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Rolling his eyes at the two.
"I would appreciate it if you would keep me out of any orgiastic tendencies. It would interrupt my rest."
Still clutching his hand over the grievous scar, Bealzius nods, though without much humor in his voice. "I have certainly been addled. That much is true."
Bealzius smiles a little to himself. "Since I don't intend to enter combat any more than I absolutely have to, I do not think I shall be preparing those types of scrolls. However, for those who do fight well on the front lines, perhaps I might suggest a different tactic. There are some of us who have some ability to fight at range, but cannot do so optimally because of your presence in melee. If you might wait a few seconds before charging the foe, we might be able to do significantly more damage from a distance."
Bealzius arches an eyebrow at Lucius.
"I generally have no intention of fighting in the front lines. I felt that I could offer some interference in this case, but was not expecting the skeletons to be as intelligent as they were. For some reason I could not sense that before, but it is likely that my superiors would inform me it is due to my impatience and absent-mindedness. If we have some downtime tomorrow, I will attempt to write some scrolls so that I am more prepared in combat scenarios where I don't have any spells left."
Bealzius strokes his beard.
"It is also strange that these animated skeletons were surprisingly agile and intelligent. Marc speaks correctly when he says that it is the wise tactic to assault the less armored. That the skeletons were able to use this tactic informs me that these were not the simple command-obeying type of undead."
"We are dealing with a significantly disturbing force, and I fear that most of our assumptions regarding the undead will prove useless. Zombies bearing a plague, some fast, some slow. Immune to magic of force. Animated skeletons, active and intelligent. This is a concern for us all, and I must consider these facts most carefully."
All in all, I think I'm roleplaying a low Wisdom, high Intelligence character very well.
Bealzius arches an eyebrow at Marc.
"I was not expecting the thing to immediately target me. I had always assumed animated skeletons were a shambling, unintelligent lot, but I see now that I am mistaken. It was a potentially deadly mistake, but an educational one."
At 2 hp.
Bealzius nods gruffly, surprised at how easily the skeleton turned to attack a flanker. He rubs his chest where the sword pierced through.
"They move surprisingly quickly for undead creatures, don't they."

Stabilize
1d20 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 - 2 = 3
Round 5 Stabilizie
1d20 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (7) + 2 - 3 = 6
I was going to say something rather defensive, but I don't think that will add anything to the experience.
Round 2
Init 24, AC 12, hp 8/8
Bealzius dismounts and readies his shortspear.
Round 3
Init 24, AC 12, hp 8/8
He moves forward and strikes at one of the skeletons, striking from a flanking position.
1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 + 2 = 23
1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
26 posts, lol.
As is usual for him, Bealzius fails to notice anything, as his mind is too busy ruminating over other arcane matters.
initiative
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Round 1
(assuming that a minute has passed)AC 12, hp 8/8
Remaining mounted, Bealzius prepares his crossbow and loads it.
Ride check.
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
I'm out of main spells for the day. Need a chance to rest and rememorize.
Apparently, you all are most active, around noon my time... :P
Bealzius is relieved that no one was seriously hurt by the goblins, but also waits for Hafdan, curious as to whether or not he discovered anything in his scouting attempt.
Round 2
AC: 16, mage armor, bless, hp 8/8
He conjures an acid splash at the closest unengaged goblin.
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
1d3 ⇒ 3
"Acid from the vats of Tartarus!"
but the acid veers wide from its intended target.
Initiative
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Round 1
AC: 12, hp 8/8
Bealzius will move his mount 5 feet away from the goblins and dismount, then cast mage armor on himself.
Sorry, everyone. This weekend is crazy busy at work... (tax-free weekend). I thought I put it in a previous post, but I must have forgotten to... Things won't return to normal until Monday, really. Maybe Sunday afternoon if I'm not completely exhausted.
Bealzius lets his compy Threx out of his cage, (although to be honest, Threx can let himself out any time he wants to), and lets him run around in the area surrounding the house for a bit, going a little into the forest, but never too far from the group.
He strokes his beard as he watches the tiny dinosaur run around.
"It's possible, if the Eriksons did have some cursed item that caused this zombie plague, the goblins or whatever creatures were here now have that item."
Bealzius looks around the house one more time, using detect magic to see if anything the family might have had in their household was cursed or enchanted in some way.
Perception (20) 20 + 1 = 21
Knowledge (Local) 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
With Threx adjusted to the small cage he had bought for him, Bealzius searches the house for anything strange or arcane. Casting detect magic
Perception: Take 20 20 + 1 = 21
Dotting.
"Given the history of the wars in this area. I would not be surprised if it was a goblin." Bealzius strokes his beard. "This zombie curse might have been something of their making."
Knowledge (history) on the goblins in the area.
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
Bealzius looks out into the forest where the movement is fading.
Perception 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
He considers for a moment sending Threx into the woods to check it out, but finally decides not to.
Bealzius accepts the book and flips through the records.
"I agree with your conclusion. If these two families were trading, and they were the first to be afflicted, it is likely that something that was traded carried the curse."
Bealzius looks through the list of traded materials for anything magically suspicious. Arcane 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
Although he wasn't patient enough to cut it as a librarian, Bealzius' hands still itch to hold the book and thumb through its pages.
Bealzius searches the household, with Threx perched on his shoulder. 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7.
He also notices the destruction of the town, and ponders the possibilities of magic that might have caused it. Arcane
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Also casting detect magic as he looks around the buildings and the household.
"I would also like to investigate the residences of these three families."
Bealzius strokes his beard as he contemplates this for a second.
"Is there anyone around who remembers the first people who were sick? Perhaps they can help us to find a point of origin."
I have changed my opposition schools to Evocation and Enchantment. Already starting to feel a little different.
My spellbook is listed at the bottom of my profile.
Among other things, this means I can no longer cast light spells or magic missiles. I may learn dancing lantern if we need light in the future. It also means I can cast detect magic as a regular spell instead of an opposed school spell.
I've also had to change out my spell selection, as a result, so I think it will be a little better than what I had before.
