Alister approaches Tenzekil. "Surrender, gnome! We'll undoubtedly be more merciful than the queen!"

Did Alister's alchemist fire hit? Also, I don't know if the persistent damage (1d6 on the following round) would apply.

"That's it, Mikhail! Cut them down!" Alister draws another alchemist's fire and hurls it at the bees again.

Grimnir's acid should also get the Inspire Courage bonus

Alister is about to put away the alchemist fire when he spots the bee swarm still intact. "Go stop the bleaching, I'll hold off the swarm of bees!"

Stay on the road. Easier to spot us, but the fey have all the advantage in the forest, and we're liable to get lost in the woods. Of course, this is a pocket dimension, so normal rules might not even apply.

I just realized Alister is still in the effect

Reflex Save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 Ugh

Alister tries to flee from the attacker, the vines grabbing at him and slowing him down. Provoke AOO for leaving the square.

Once away, he simply vanishes. His voice, however, remains. "Kill the worgs and they won't be able to flee!"

Cast Vanish; maintain Inspire Courage

With the entangled penalty, it's likely Alister is taking some damage, but at least he's invisible now.

Alister dashes out of the vines before they can grab him. He draws his sword. "We need to dispatch them before they can report back to the queen!"

Alister shifts the haversack filled with strobes in his back. Though he knew it weighed no more than normal, he swore the bag felt heavier. "Right, let's take the road and get out of sight quickly." He glances at the others and begins hustling up the path, trying to keep an eye out for any sign of someone coming.

Alister slips off his haversack filled with the wardstones. He holds it tightly and prepares to step into the rift. "Everyone ready? Something tells me, it won't be rainbows and gumdrops on the other side." He slides his metamagic rod out of the pack in case there's an immediate need.

Without being able to prepare spells again, Alister is out of 2nd level spells. He's got his 2 3rd-level slots and 3 1st-level slots left.

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

Alister glances over and sees his brother and the dryad whispering. "You two about done? We have a Queen to kill." After the fact, he watches the two of them. An interesting possibility...

Alister stumbles out like a zombie. He has dark circles under his eyes and his shoulder is bruised. "The Fellnight Realm is closing in on this world. Not even our dreams are safe from her anymore. We must stop her."

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

Ouch, all of our arcane casters. Divine casters even if they succumbed could still prep spells.

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

"The Queen of Roses is more ancient and formidable than I thought. If the Eldest locked her away, they either feared her or feared what she would do." Alister examines the smaller wardstones. "These came from the Fellnight Realm? The bleachling was her pawn to cause all of this..."

He looks up at the dryad and the others. "A mortal was the key to bringing her here, and mortals shall be her undoing. Thank you for fighting her army while we try to take this on. How do we enter the Fellnight Realm?"

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

"If we don't all choose to fight, then we will never have another choice again. Let's be clear, you will not outlast Queen Rhowsan, you will not outwit her, you will not learn to love her. Your days of freedom will be over."

He turns to the centaur. "You are from Nomen? I hope to live long enough to visit friends there. But make no mistake, your cousins will soon face Rhowsan themselves if we do not stop her now. Do you think the Queen of Roses who would be Eldest will be satiated at the forest's edge? If she takes the mantle of Eldest to herself, she doesn't seek just a small refuge to watch the sun rise and set. She means to bring her Realm -- a realm where she rules absolutely -- here and grow it. The Narlmarches, the Kamelands, Nomen, the Slough, the whole of the Stolen Lands, and even more. And if you retreat now, then those of us who sit here may be the ones who bridle and bit you. For we will be her slaves and our strength will be hers. If we don't stop her now, she will add fey and mortals alike to her army, becoming nigh-unstoppable."

Alister looks questioningly at Tiressia, not wanting to lower her in the eyes of the other fey, but needing to address her points. "Yes, our lives are but a passing nuisance to the fey. But do you fear our fleeting actions more so than the Queen of Roses, who would call herself Eldest? Her subjugation and rule over you will last an eternity and you will feel every moment of it for your long lives. The pain and dominance of her presence will crush you ever slowly as hundreds of winters pass. You might live under her rule, but is it a life worth living?"

"Men may come and go, but our hearts are inspired by legacy and legend. Even now, we honor those who served our fledgling realm, our Lord Faisul and Sir Alexius. We hold their names and ideals and try to measure up. A great pact with the free fey of the Narlmarches in times of need can be part of that legacy too. It can guide our kingdom and shape it. Allow our people to see you as allies and brothers to call and be called upon when danger arises. If we grow prosperous, you will have our swords and axes at your side."

I haven't played it yet, and I'm very optimistic based on feedback from others, but I do find things in the rulebook that make me cringe. It reads as much more gamey than 1e. Not sure how to explain it, and I'm aware that it sounds very groggnard-ish. I'm hoping that the things that make me wary fade away in actual play and that it's back to Pathfinder again.

By gamey, I mean that things seems to be presented very tightly tied to the game structure and not as natural as in 1e. Everything seems to be a game term and not just described. Classes have class feats, not just abilities and choice at each stage. Actually everything is some kind of feat even multiclassing, rather than the plethora of named abilities in 1e (Discoveries, rage powers, Revelations, talents, etc). All this probably makes for a tighter game structure with less ambiguity, but it just seems more artificial and mechanical to me. For instance, items aren't measured in pounds, but in "bulk." Like I said, I catch myself just sounding grumpy, rather than legit critiques. That's why I'm hoping the mechanics fade away once you start playing.

I really do like certain aspects though, like the 3 action combats, encouraging more mobility, and less disparity between casters and martials. And a viable skill-based way to heal! I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the way skills work, and it's weird that Inspire Courage is a cantrip.

I guess I hope my issue is more with how the game is presented than how it plays and works. If so, I can happily live with that.

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

Alister stands and looks around at the assembled forest creatures. He clears his throat and begins to speak.

"Queen Rhoswen seeks to bring all the forest under her rule. She wants every creature to bow to her and will force her will on you. You will be little more than slaves. See what she has wrought on you already. The Spriggans don't invite you to join them. They have put many of your kind to death."

He looks back at his small group of champions. "The bleaching seems to have convinced her to do the same to our mortal kingdom. She seeks to destroy my people and all we have built. I am the sword and shield of my people. I will fight her and the bleachling with everything I have. My brother and my friends will fight them until the end."

He pauses, looking at the group again. "Queen Rhoswan commands a mighty force that dwarfs all of us. If we each fight her individually, we have very little hope of winning. But together, we have a chance. A single stick is weak, but a bundle is strong. A herd can protect each other from wolves. The decision to be strong is yours. We will choose to fight with all we have. If you join us, we can take the fight to her. Make the spriggans regret taking the lives of our friends."

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

"Come on!" Alister leaps off the cliff awkwardly.

"Tenzekil! I challenge you to single combat! Face me and we can avoid all this destruction!"

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

"Tenzekil!" Alister, now returned to his normal form, shouts the name of the bleaching. "Come and face me! You ruined a scared ceremony and killed those who I pledged to defend. I will have justice!"

He shifts to address the spriggans more. "And why did Tenzekil seek such a crime? Because a young gnome girl thought him too old and crass to be her suitor! We are here because Tenzekil is angry at a girl! Because she will not love him! Is that worth serving him?"

Diplomacy (heroism): 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 16 + 2 = 33

I picked Diplomacy because this is more of forceful persuasion to abandon Tenzekil rather than any sort of demoralization.

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

"There's a whole mess of them in the cave. Hang on." Mer-Alister grabs his pack, dumps out the contents, then swims with it down to load up the haversack. He returns with all the wardstones in tow.

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

Alister grabs one of the stones and quickly makes his way back to tell the others. "Aristu, Piotr! What do you make of this?"

Is the cave fully submerged or do you emerge into a breathable space?

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

"That, I might be able to do." He peers down in the water, hoping there's not another elemental hiding. Then suddenly he twirls around and a merfolk Alister stands before them.

"Ha! It worked!" He looks immensely proud of himself. "Now..." He whispers another word and vanishes, but you hear and see the splash of water into the pool.

Cast Alter Self to become a merfolk. Then Vanish. Alister gets a swim speed of 30 and low-light vision, plus he's invisible for 5 rounds. (I think that's right that he doesn't get the full Swim 50, nor the aquatic ability to breathe underwater, but he can hold his breath). He will quickly scout the cave.

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

Alister struggles to his feet and begins healing himself with the wand. "I usually use magic to ward myself. But you might have a point about the bow. I'll look into it the next time we're back in Stagfell."

Scratch 9 charges from the wand to get him to 45hp.

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

Inspire Courage is still going for 2 more rounds. Alister is just that good that his broken, bleeding body is providing a boost.

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

I'm starting a week and a half road trip where posting is going to be irregular.

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

Alister groans at the pain from being battered. He lashes out with his sword again filing it with arcane power. "Die, puddles!"

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

"Fine, have it you way! Burn them to hell!" Alister shouts, suddenly disappearing.

Alister glances at his brother, then back to the elemental. He speaks in a precise and low voice. "I don't think you understand me. Show us the wardstones. If Queen Rhoswen hears that you refused us, she'll use you as a watering hole and you'll learn what it feels like to go through every forest animal in her whole realm."

Intimidate: 1d20 + 12 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 12 + 2 = 20

Uh...three 6s in a row...?

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

Alister shakes his head. "He doesn't go anywhere without me. Now, our Queen told us to fix this. Where are the wardstones? We need to see them to figure out what the druid has done. My brother can break his magic, but he might need the rest of us to understand how." He watches the elemental closely to see what might resonate with it.

Alister will translate for the others

"Ah good, we finally found it. We are associates of Tenzekil, the bleachling. The Magnificent Queen Rhoswen has commanded that we examine the wardstones. Something is wrong with them. She believes the druid to have done something. My brother has fey blood and can break the druid's magic."

"Now, she told us to find you and that you would show us the wardstones. Our Queen commands it."

"I can cast a spell to speak whatever language it speaks. Maybe we can get it to help us." Alister casts a spell and begins to try and speak Aquan towards the pool. It's a gurgling language that seems to sound like the man is about to drown.

Aquan:
"Hello? I am Alister of Stagfell. May we speak? We come as friends of the forest."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 16 + 2 = 28

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

"Quickly, after it! Maybe it knows something." Alister draws his sword and begins climbing up to the second pool.

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

When they reach Dead Man's Drop, Alister uses his metamagic rod to cast another extended Heroism spell. He squints as he tries to see through the thick mist. "I might regret this, but..." Alister casts a Detect Magic and instinctively puts up his hand to try and block what might be an overwhelming sensation.

Cast heroism using extended metamagic rod. Then cast Detect Magic.

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

Alister nods. "We need to break the connection with our world. How do we restore the wardstones once we find them?"

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

Alister stays with Devarre, helping the man. "You're safe now. Can you tell us what you remember? Especially about the Rose Queen. We need to know how to stop her. Did the wisp know anything about where she is? Or Tenzekil, the bleachling?"

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

Alister pulls out the newly purchased wand and taps Devarre with the inaugural charge. He uses it again on the druid for a good measure.

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

Alister watches the corpse candle fly away. "I thought all of them would be freed. I guess that was too much to hope for. We have to end this mist before we head back to Stagfell though."

He looks down to Mikhail tending to Devarre's wounds. "Can you wake him?"

Human Bard 7 [hp 47/47; F+4, R+7, W+8 (+4 vs. language and sonic); AC 18/12/17; Init +1, Perception +10, Sense Motive +16]

Griminr, did you factor in Alister's Inspire Courage?

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 3 + 2 = 17

Does that also mean Mikhail's spell has no effect?

Alister's eyes go wide at the mention of Candlemere. Then he speaks with a harsh edge. "I ended the evil hold on that island. The elven souls may pass to the afterlife. In your case, I'll send you there myself." He slashes at Devarre, the magical drumbeat moving him faster than normal. His sword glows with magic.
