Pathfinder Battles: Undead Hoard

Tuesday, February 26, 2019

Yes, yes, I know. That's not the right version of "horde." But hear me out! No army of undead is complete without a veritable dragon's trove of minion figures to inundate the battlefield with. So while the minis represent a horde of undead, you, dear reader, are going to amass a hoard of these phenomenal figures from the forthcoming Pathfinder Battles: Ruins of Lastwall set from WizKids (now due out in May).

We've already looked at the Skeletal Speaker figure, but it's not the only skeleton in the set. No, there are two more to form the backbone of your undead army. Here we have the Skeletal Samurai and Skeletal Soldier, Medium uncommon and common figures, respectively.

Dry bones, dry bones, so many dry bones. Often missing from the armies of undeath are aquatic creatures, the drowned dead. Well, not anymore! The Draugr, a Medium common figure, can also serve as a blue-skinned zombie or other walking dead, but is particularly useful when you need the living dead to threaten a ship or coastal community.

While all undead threaten to haunt the dreams of the living, only some are native to the Dreamlands themselves. One such example is the Lovecraftian horror known as a Leng Ghoul, represented here as a Medium common figure.

Last week I promised one final deity in the series, and none seemed more fitting for this set than Arazni, whose history is intertwined with the Knights of Ozem and the Whispering Tyrant. It was the dread lich who killed her when she was Aroden's herald, known as the Red Crusader, after all. Now, she rules the undead nation of Geb in the absence of its ghostly namesake. A Medium rare figure, Arazni will be particularly useful to GMs running the Tyrant's Grasp Adventure Path, the first adventure of which should be hitting store shelves before the end of the month.

Among the many artifacts linked to Arazni, none are more infamous than the Bloodstones of Arazni, a set of canopic jars holding her innards. Thus, when deciding on our final piece of set dressing, we used the image of these jars to make a pair of Canopic Jars suitable for any undead tomb. In practice, they came back smaller than I would have preferred, even if they are at the correct scale. In retrospect, we probably should have cheated their size up a bit and grouped them together into a bunch instead of being individual urns.

Finally, we end our preview series with one of the most requested figures in Pathfinder lore. A figure originally made way back in 2005 in metal form in Compleat Encounter: The Vault of the Whispering Tyrant (the first appearance of the iconic lich, long before Pathfinder or Golarion were even a thing), the Whispering Tyrant has never had a prepainted plastic iteration. That ends now, however, with this Medium rare figure based on the Wayne Reynolds cover of Pathfinder Campaign Setting: The Inner Sea World Guide.

Next week, we'll look at the contents of the set's premium piece, the Cemetery of the Fallen, with pictures of the final pieces on display at New York Toy Fair earlier in the month.

Really digging those canopic jars!

I love the skull in Arazni's violet-hued flames and the Whispering Tyrant looks freaking terrifying!

Lots of good undead here, but I’m a little disappointed that there is o Shocker Lizard. Still this is a strong finish to the Ruins of Lastwall set. The case incentive is phenomenal as well, I’m looking forward to next week’s preview.

But, then we have over two months before the set comes out, does this mean no more previews for the time being?

I definitely prefer the individual urns. I sort of wish all 4 could have been made -- the art for them looks really great.

It is also great to see the Whispering Tyrant in plastic!

These have been added to the gallery page which now shows the full set:

I really hope you are done doing undead till the builder sets on your shelf have sold out.

Berk, i imagine that Mark could show us a different render from the "Pathfinder Battles: Iconic Heroes Evolved" set each week - it is supposed to be out in may too. ;-)

I may have said this before, but it's more true now than it was then... this may be the finest set I've seen / been anticipating since the Rise of the Runelords set first came out!

And as a GM who is planning to run Tyrant's Grasp, I am so very happy at the appearance of several of the minis revealed in this blog! ;)

Skeletal Samurai: I like it, it can either be an undead from Tian-Xia (useful for Jade Regent) or a different kind of Skeletal Champion.

Skeletal Soldier: This mini looks like a "Cairn Wight" illustration (i don't remember from where) and can stand in for all kinds of more fleshy, intelligent undead, like maybe Juju Zombies. I also like that it has a weapon, shield and armor. It looks a little viking in style and could be used in the Land of the Linnorm Kings.
This being a common allows for a small warband troop being built easily.

Draugr: This CR 2 from Bestiar 2 (page 110) looks great and may also be used for an undead barbarian. It is the 84th creature from Bestiary 2 to be adapted into a ppm (out of 285 total, 45 of them huge or larger). You can also build a small crew of drowned sailors with it being common.

Leng Ghoul: This CR 10 undead from Bestiary 5 (page 120) is only the 15th mini from that volume. The common variety is unexpected.

Arazni: This CR 26/MR 8 mini looks very similiar to the illustration on page 51 of the "Mythic Realms" Campaign Setting (where you can find her stats). I like it.

Canopic Jars: These can also be seen on page 51 of Mythic Realms, but are from the "Artifacts & Legends" Campaign Setting (page 13) originally.
I really like the look of them and agree that they should possibly be medium instead of presumably small.
It's great that we get two instead of one, even if a set of four individual ones would have been the best.

Whispering Tyrant:
All illustrations have the headpiece much bigger with thicker horns.
Also the armor is more prominent with much more bright yellow gold colors.
The cloak and robe are also much thinner and torn, like the skeletal arms. The whole mini looks too dark with this color scheme. I really don't think it does the character justice.
You can find the stats for this CR 26/MR 10 bad boy on pages 62 & 63 of "Mythic Realms".

Ruins of Lastwall has shaped up to a much better set than i originally thought.

I really like a lot of the common minis best:
-Poltergeist
-Kyton Evangelist
-Formian Worker
-Razmir Cultist
-Hyena
-Skeletal Soldier
-Draugr
The fact that a case will have 4-5 of each of them is great.

From the uncommon minis i like:
-Mohrg
-Formian Warrior
-Skeletal Samurai

and from the larges:
-Tomb Giant
-Scorpionfolk
-Warmonger Devil
best. Getting about three of each in a case will be nice.

I like half of the rares:
-Thanadaemon
-Urgathoa
-Razmir
-Arazni
-Formian Queen
-Floating Throne with Pharasma

Dressings:
-Crypt Wall with removable corpses &
-Rack
are incredible!
The rest isn't bad.

But the most useful and best piece is the "Cemetery of the Fallen" incentive.
I really can't stress enough, how important it is for international buyers to show the entire incentive first and before order cut off date (normally about three months before release date), otherwise we may not get them.
I initially held off ordering a case, because i didn't like all the human and humanoid minis shown, as i have hundreds of them.
As more and more of the later reveals met my desires, i ordered two bricks and the incentive.
When i saw pictures of the actual incentive, i ordered two of them.

The thing is, i don't know if my order will be fullfilled, as the order cut off date of www.blackfire.eu was already over.
Here's hoping.

Sczarni

I have a feeling I'll buy a common set on the aftermarket, and get a few additional singles, but I won't buy a case of anything that doesn't have a mob as the case incentive anymore.

edit: bad voice to text messing up by/buy

This is helpful feedback as I look to preview future sets. Up through the previews of Kingmaker last summer, I was operating under the assumption that everything needed to be previewed before the street date, and fans here expressed their frustration that the set hadn't been fully revealed before paizo.com subscriptions were billed. So I scheduled out these blogs to leave a full month from the last one before subs were set to auth in early April. Knowing that the timeline is even longer for international orders not made through paizo.com gives me additional things to consider for the next set.

As for why the Cemetery of the Fallen set is being shown last, I was waiting until we had an image of the full set all painted and packaged. Until Toy Fair, we in the office had only ever seen digital renders that didn't do justice to how the pieces look in relation to one another or individual paint masters that didn't illustrate the duplicated pieces. I'll talk a bit more about that in next week's blog.

Hi Mark, could you confirm what we will actually see in a box that contains the Canoptic Jars please? I'm getting a very mixed read from the blog and various postings. Many thanks.

My understanding is that there will be two jars (the ones depicted in digital renders on the left) packaged together. They are individual pieces (ie. not connected to one another) and are size Tiny or smaller when placed next to other figures. The illustration of four canopic jars was the reference we sent to WizKids (along with one of them at Arazni's feet to show scale) for them to sculpt and paint them.

Mark, I'd like to express serious appreciation for your consideration to subscribers. I love that you're working hard to have these fully revealed before subs charge, and that you're trying to be considerate of international buyers too, since that's a big ask, but an important one for them. Bravo!

Thank you, Mark! :-)

Order deadline for the
"Pathfinder Battles: Legendary Adventures Preview Pack" is may 14th 2019, but as we already know it's content, i ordered one.

Order deadline for "Pathfinder Battles: Legendary Adventures Case of 4 Booster Bricks (8 ct.) with Goblin Village Premium Set" is june 11th.
I already know i want the village, but i don't know how many walls are included and if one is enough.
The fact which huge uncommon minis will be in the set ultimately decide, if i order two bricks, a case or two cases (to get two villages).

I would greatly appreciate it, if you could reveal the parts of the incentive and six to eight uncommon huge minis before that date.

Thank you for your time and dedication! :-)
