Community Card Creator and Errata Decks

Tuesday, February 25, 2015

Paizo and DriveThruCards have been cooking up a couple of delicacies for the Adventure Card Game connoisseur. Steve Wieck of DriveThruCards has details below!

Card Creator

Paizo and DriveThruCards are delighted to announce their partnership and today's release of the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Community Card Creator. That's quite a mouthful isn't it? Even making it an acronym, PACGCCC, isn't much better. Let's call it the Card Creator.

So what is the Card Creator? It's a web application at DriveThruCards that lets you create, print, and share your own cards ideas for PACG. You can check it out here!

The Card Creator allows you to:

  • Create your own cards
  • Purchase your created cards in print for $0.50/card.
  • Keep your card private.
  • List your card publicly on DriveThruCards, allowing other PACG fans to see your card, comment on it, and purchase it.

Using the creator is easy. Just choose your card type, and then upload some card art.

We've worked with Fiery Dragon Productions and Fat Goblin Games to make an array of stock art available to you as a micro-license for $0.40. You can also upload your own art or public domain art. Then create your card text and attributes before finalizing the card.

We've gone to Herculean effort to match the card backs as closely as possible to the Skull & Shackles cards, so that cards you create and print can be shuffled in seamlessly with your existing cards. To avoid any confusion, though, all community created cards are clearly indicated as such. The traditional expansion icon in the upper left corner of the card is replaced with a Community Created Card logo.

This clearly differentiates the official cards designed by Mike Selinker and the card game team from the unofficial cards designed by the community. Speaking of Mike Selinker, now might be a great time to review Mike's post that offers a guidelines on creating PACG cards.

Then, please come and give the card creator a try or check out the cards the community is already creating with this new tool!

Errata Decks

Today we're also releasing errata decks on DriveThruCards for any PACG fan who wants to play with fully corrected Rise of the Runelords cards. There are a few different errata decks, and you'll want to check the printing of your cards to know which errata deck is for you. The first Runelords printing was manufactured in China and the second was done in the USA. The card backs produced by each printer vary a bit in color, so to have errata cards most closely match your existing cards, you should get the errata decks customized for your printing. Not sure if you have a first printing or second printing? Check the fine print on the back of your box. The first printing will read, "Printed in China" and the second will say, "Printed in the USA."

Naturally, there are more errata cards for the first printing, as many cards were corrected in the second printing. The first printing errata cards are available in three separate decks or as one bundle of all the cards. The second printing errata cards come all in one deck.

Tanis would like to add that the Adventure Card Guild cards created exclusively for the Season of the Shackles will soon be uploaded to the Card Creator, so you can play your way through that story without proxies.

We hope you enjoy using the Card Creator and updating your Rise of the Runelords collection with the Errata Decks!

I had this problem too, although I only ever tried it once, just to play with it. The Next button wouldn't take me anywhere, and I don't remember seeing any Finalize button.

In this case you just generated a overpowered card... DriveTruCards then wont let it finalize you. Just reduce card power and you will see the "Next" button will work...

Happy card designing!

Answering a genuine question with something that's meant to be funny but could easily be taken seriously is really not helpful.

I am still having this problem. I create a card and get to the Card Text page, put in all the stats / checks / traits and then when I clidk on Next, nothing happens. I can go back to previous pages, but not forward. I can't click on Finalize at the top either. I've tried Chrome as well as IE - same issue with both browsers.

Is anyone else having this problem? Am I missing something? Is there a workaround?

Are you waiting long enough? I've never made a card, but my understanding is this step can take a number of minutes.

I'm not having that problem (or at least as of last week I wasn't). Though I have experienced something where I need to click Next a few times for it to go. I doubt it would matter much, but on the off chance it is something about the card you are trying to create, try making a really simple card. Set B, only trait is Basic, one simple power, one simple check and using their artwork. And if it still doesn't work, share what exactly you put on the card and I'll try to make the same card and see what happens.

Well I just went back to IE after a few hours and discovered that the page was still open, so I don't think it's that. Plus, if it were processing something I should be able to see the next page loading. As it is, it's simply not doing anything.

Thanks Hawkmoon. I did try clicking all over the actual button and also around it as well. I just made a basic one: an item. I chose the first licensed image (a green rod), deck B, called it "Green Staff", Accessory, Dexterity 2, and in the Powers box I put "Test". Same issue as before: nothing happens when I click Next, although the link is clearly: http://www.drivethrucards.com/builder/#next

The funny thing is, if I right-click on it and open in a new tab, it takes me to the DriveThruCards.com main page. If I go back to the Card Image page and I right-click that Next button, I don't have an option to open in a new tab. That leads me to think it's a different kind of link, though I'm not computer literate enough to say that with any certainty.

Ok. I was able to get to the finalize page with that card.

The link for next is actually dynamic. The page you enter the details of the card on should be this link:

https://www.drivethrucards.com/builder/pathfinder/create/####

But the #### will be replaced with a unique number for each time the card creator is started. And after you click next, you should be at this link:

https://www.drivethrucards.com/builder/pathfinder/finalize/####

And the #### will be the same number as it was on the previous page.

Do you have any add-ons or extensions installed on your browser that might be causing the problem?

I'm not sure how much more help I can provide. I'd try contacting DriveThru and seeing what they can tell you.

Ooh. I don't have any plugins (pretty sure) but I use Chrome so that I can turn off Flash because Flash = eww. Is Flash required for the card creator?

It's nearing the end of the work day here in London and I need to get on with other stuff, but when I get home later I will try it with Flash turned back on. Failing that, I will try manually typing in the address in the finalize/#### format. I will let you know what happens. Thanks for your help.

Hmm... That might be it. I don't see any signs that it is running Flash, but I'm not digging too deeply. There is some javascript in it.

I couldn't wait. I went into my Chrome settings and discovered that Flash is actually turned ON, so I switched it OFF and it seems to have worked! Voila! Now when I click Next it takes me to the Finalize page. Unfortunately all I have so far is a lousy Green Staff :-P

If anyone else is having that problem and is using Chrome, I suggest disabling Adobe Flash Player in your Settings and seeing if that helps. (Go to Settings > Advanced Settings > Content Settings > Manage individual plug-ins)

You might want to make sure you have the latest version of Flash Player... and if you do, you might want to try reinstalling it anyway.

Will do, thanks. I try not to use it much anyway, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was out of date.

Any word on when characters, roles, and tokens will become available for creation?

Is there an option to buy PACG RotR/ S&S/ and/or WotR as a complete set in PDF format, i.e. the base set and all adventure decks, not just the errata cards?

If not, can we get one. Please take my money. Thank you. :)

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

We have no intention of selling the card game in PDF form.

Any chance of seeing something to purchase on the Roll20 marketplace or through Tabletopsimulator? I understand if the agreement with Obsidian prevents such things or if it doesn't fit the business model that you are going for.

I can (and honestly am working on) scanning the cards myself to play with friends and family who are remote, but I would be happier to have the opportunity to pay Paizo for a more professional solution and would feel a lot better about the use of the IP.

I could wait to see if Obsidian provides a solution, but I am concerned that multiplayer is not a guarantee, and even more concerned that the timeframe of any /possible/ multiplayer could be six months, a year, two-years... or who knows (see the Ultra Pro adventure storage for an example of something that was high on my wish list that has dwindled to "meh" because of way too much of a delay). My final concern is that EACH player will have to purchase the Obsidian product, which depending on price point could get very prohibitive for 6 players. Compare this with the tabletop version where I am the only one required to pay for my addiction of all things PACG. I would not get even 5% of the play time that I do with friends and family if they each had to own the tabletop versions to play.

I am starting to feel more than a little myfly-esque with my persistence and passion on this topic, so I will take a break on the issue for a while unless there are questions. However, I would like to add that I am very happy that the development team does listen and consider these requests, even when I don't always get the answers that I hope for. Thank you for all that you do!

For now, it's just the regular printed game and the Obsidian version in the works. (And I can't tell you anything about Obsidian's pricing strategy yet.)

Anyway, finding this Community Card Creator just now on the DriveThru website nearly a year later, I still have to ask:

- Can I recreate official Adventure Paths into homebrew full-fledged card sets with this Card Creator?

I don't work for Paizo, so take this as fully unofficial. But, I think the answer depends...

1. Do you want to do this just for your own benefit and have no intention of making them available to the larger community? Then sure, Vic has basically said before that if you aren't distributing stuff to others, what you do is your own business.

2. Are you planning on making it available in the community cards section? Then, no. That would be a violation of copyright.

See this comment.

When does the Wrath of the Righteous errata deck and cards for Season of the Righteous come out?

Ad 1.)

"Distributing"
Means distributing the original files! That means you may only take a picture with your camera of your project and put it in the image section of BGG (creative option).
If I am wrong, please let me know.... I got several creative project running. Not for distribution, but showing a snapshot by camera is OK (to get feedback from the community).

We are still waiting for the Skull Shackles Errata deck. That one is first hopefully.

Legal answer: in copyright law, a photo of a thing can be considered a derivative work, and copyright holders have the exclusive rights to distribute derivative works of their materials.

General answer: If we've told you what we allow and what we don't, trying to work around it so you can do whatever you want is not going to make you any friends.

Errata card 1st edition complete is 23 USD and USPS first class shipping to germany is 18 USD.

Come on! This sucks!

USPS first class international envelope is usually 6.50 USD...

Why is the shipping here so expensive?
Please use standard envelopes and NOT Golden ones.
:-(((
... And adjust international shipping to reasonable values.
Thanks!

I will add my voice to the screw USPS. I am really getting sick of their international fees. If you think 18$ shipping for a 23$ order offensive, think again. Yesterday I tried to order a 39$ [Non-collectible card game] set yesterday and I was rewarded with a whopping 50$ shipping to France from USPS. 150$ for priority...

I remember fondly the 2000s when it cost less to ship from the US than from France. At the same time I can't help but notice that these days my orders from Japan coming through DHL (I don't care which company) never rise above 20$ shipping anymore (9,90 on my last order). I remember (not so fondly) a time not too long ago when a 15$ book got 30$ shipping + 10$ tax + 15$ downright thievery from the transporter (chronopost iirc). The point being if you want to put in some effort you can work out better deals...

The big thing that changed is that in May 2007, the USPS eliminated international surface mail, meaning the (literal) "slow boat" option went away. All international mail from the US is now air mail.
