A Kuthite with a conscience. I was sold already, but now I'm solder alreadier.
Especially like the hero's internal displacement of responsibility for his actions. It seems like he's going to be a lot of fun to see develop throughout the story.
Also, strix eyes are even stranger than I had imagined. Oddly, those details make them feel more alien to me than wings and dark feathers. Imagine the firelight catching in a bunch of pairs of those eyes looking down from the treetops at night.

I have to confess that I've never actually read Wolfe beyond a couple of short stories. The spousal unit LOVES the Book of the New Sun but I have yet to read it.
I know, my SF/F cred is officially revoked forever. Woe, woe.
Well, I read the first two books and then stopped. That's probably worse, because I know what I'm missing out on!
Seriously, it's gotta be about the best-written SF I've ever read.
