Pathfinder Battles Preview: Sing, Sing, Sing!

Friday, June 15, 2012

The August release date of the new Rise of the Runelords Pathfinder Battles miniature set approaches, and you can tell by the rising sound of chittering and singing on the horizon. "Goblins chew and goblins bite! Goblins cut and goblins fight!" the chanting goes, growing nearer and nearer. Your dog begins to bark with anxiety, casting watery eyes toward the back door. Out in the yard, you hear your horse whine in fear.

The goblins are coming. Their song haunts the darkening skies.

With the first adventure in the now-classic Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path, our own James Jacobs created a brilliantly demented twist on goblins, and their haunting (and yet somehow hilarious) song about killing dogs and horses, bonking baby heads, and stewing flesh solidified goblins as the Pathfinder monster in the minds of roleplayers everywhere. That song put us on the map.

In the goblin raid encounter that starts the campaign, all the goblins attacking Sandpoint sing James's little ditty, but the one leading the song is the Goblin Warchanter, a female bard with a whip and a nasty attitude.

Here she is in all her plastic glory, screaming at the top of her little lungs. This common miniature is a great addition to the several other goblins in the set, and helps to set the scene in style with the campaign's very first series of encounters. We've even drawn out the location of Sandpoint's Swallowtail Festival on the new GameMastery Flip-Mat: Town Square, which has several perches and crannies for the Goblin Warchanter to seek refuge once the player characters interrupt her song.

But here's hoping they don't do it too rapidly. The last line of the song goes "We be goblins, you be food!", and it's always important to remind the player characters of their proper place in the world.

Don't you agree?

Awesome little bugger, even has that leader look to her. I'm sure she'll fit right in with others I snagged in the Heroes & Monsters set. :)

This mini is awesome. Love her!
Cant have to many Pathfinder Goblins. Id still love one with a torch.

I have a question though. Why are the goblin minis green? In all the artwork they have grey skin.

Still love the figure. Just curious.

Wayne's Runelords goblins started gray, but they've been trending toward green ever since (see the Bestiary, the Condition Card deck, basically almost anywhere else).

Goblin skin tone ranges from gray to green to even light purple at times. For licensed stuff like plushes and miniatures, we tend to go with green, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some grayer repaints down the road, or even a gray "Tribe" one of these days.

Another awesome looking piece!

So, are the Pathfinder Goblins limited to green/gray legally? Does "the world's oldest RPG" have actual rights to use red, orange or yellow? Just curious. I totally agree with Hobbun, you can't have too many Goblins!

I dunno. We just like 'em green and gray, mostly.

Whatever the color, just keep 'em coming!

I like Goblins from the same tribe to have a similar look. Paizo has done this so far. Bravo! WotC had a different look and style for nearly every goblin they produced. It was difficult to have a hoard of goblins that actually look like they belonged together. Now if Paizo/Wizkids do a Goblin Encounter Pack wih Goblins of a different color then that would be cool.

Later,

Mazra

So lets see, we have -

Goblin Hero
Goblin Warrior
Goblin War Chanter
Goblin Commando (on foot and on Goblin Dog)

and

Chief Ripnugget

I'd say one more set of minis and there'll be enough different goblins to do a purplish-grey repaint encounter pack, maybe with a couple goblin dogs to round it out.

I'm still waiting for the Goblin Dog by itself. I hope the Yeth Hound didn't take it's place. But all the goblins in Heros & Monsters coupled with the ones coming out in Rise of the Runelords are making for a impressive little army. We still need some archers and torch bearers to make it perfect, but it already way surpasses anything done by Wizards of the Coast. Hats off to Paizo and Wizkids. You've made the days of dungeons containIng rooms with 10 d10 Goblins come back in Vogue. :)

everybody knows that Goblins ARE green. :) (at least since GWs Warhammer arrived)

I had an opportunity to use my squad of Watch Guards and Watch Officers in a game tonight. They fit the bill nicely as Castle Guards. Any word whether a Watch Captain will be forthcoming in RotR or a subsequent set?

Sczarni

according to Pathfinderminis.com There are only 2 figures that we don't know yet, So I doubt it will be in RotRL
