Second Annual Pathfinder Fan Fiction Contest!

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Remember last year, when a bunch of up-and-coming authors bit and clawed their way into recognition in the first-ever Pathfinder Fan Fiction Contest? Well, the good folks over at Pathfinder Chronicler are doing it again! Head over to Pathfinder Chronicler for full details, but the short version is that folks interested in writing Pathfinder fan fiction can compete for publication online and in the next Pathfinder Chronicler print anthology, plus three paizo.com gift certificates of $50, $50, and $100! I'll be helping to choose the grand prize winner from among the top five finalists, and while last year's entires were all strong, I'm looking forward to seeing some new names in the mix.

The deadline is quickly approaching, so click here for the contest rules and get writing! Good luck!

This gets posted the day before the deadline? Not a lot of time to write a 1000 word short story. =P
Guess I better bookmark the Pathfinder Chronicler website so I can try this next year!

Actually, due to the delay in getting the blog post up, the deadline's being extended by two weeks. So you DO have time!

As one of the participating members of the contest, I'd just like to say good luck to everyone who puts their submissions into the hat. I look forward to comparing notes with the each of you. And for those of you not already writing - why the heck aren't you?

Imagine the tarrasque picking roses with a magic weapon and genies.

We'll have none of that, thank you. I'm sure he was speaking rhetorically.

Thanks for the post James :D

For those unaware of what the contest brought at the end of the day you can check our Pathfinder Chronicler Anthology

So, just to be clear, if you've ever had a story or article professionally published, even in a niche market, you can't enter?

Ted might explain better the mathemathics about that, I do remember something about 5 cents per word and/or 5000 copies of your work being printed.

And no, we are talking very specific about fiction, articles and role playing material are different beast as people saw last year when Neil Spicer not only participated but also won.

if you can send the specifics of what you wrote to the contest email we would be able to give you a definitive answer.

My understandin is no more than 5 cents a word and nothing over 5000.

This is the announcement concerning the Round 1 Extension on the front page of our website.

Officially we are extending the Pathfinder Fiction Contest 2011 Round 1 until July 15th, 12:01 AM. The reason? Last year we failed to properly refine the potentially great works that came from the talent in the community. Several stories from the contest that many of us felt worthy of print (with a little more editing) were left on the wayside, never to grace the pages of our Anthology. We attribute this to the contest’s end and the lack of desire by authors to see their stories improve. I will attempt to reconcile this grievance. As founder of Pathfinder Chronicler, creator of Pathfinder Chronicler Anthology Volume I and one of the judges of this year’s contest, I wish to stress that each and every one of you can join the Pathfinder Chronicler Forums and work on your entries there with other contestants and Pathfinder Chroniclers. Not as competitors, in a ruthless contest to be #1, but as kindred spirits with the desire to lift your fellow fiction writer to their highest potential. If you wish to be published in the Pathfinder Chronicler Anthology Volume II, this is your chance to start pushing it through. Not a single story was published in last year’s Anthology that didn’t have an author's participation and the vast majority did this by registering and joining our forums.

At Pathfinder Chronicler we are a writing group first and though this contest flies in the face of teamwork in seeing your fellow writers reach their personal best, we would rather you notice the underlying intent we are trying to communicate. Reaching out to all of you to forge the strongest fiction community ever assembled. Our mission, to deliver fiction on par with professionals. As individuals, this just isn't achievable. If you truly honor what Paizo Publishing accomplishes then you must realize they do a whole slew of editing as a group for the better of their products. Therefore, I implore all contestants to work together in our forums to make their story the best it can be. Taking criticism can be hard but would you rather hear it from a judge after it is too late? If three different individuals look at your story, for sure they will find something that will add significantly to your story. I have seen it happen, over and over for the past 2 ½ years. We are allowing all entries submitted or not submitted to participate in this process. If you already turned your story in and would like a chance to participate in forums editing, you may now take that story out of submission and resubmit before the new Round 1 deadline. Still have your doubts that competing and helping each other won’t work? Read this FAQ concerning your worries. If you have any questions after the FAQ, feel free to contact us at pfcontestquestions@pathfinderchronicler.net

Thank you for your participation in being the best writers of fiction in Pathfinder!

I should be fine then. 2161 words and it was a percentage deal, not per word. I made $0.01/book.

Now I just have to write something.

I saw this and wrote out a short story I had been meaning to write for months in about an hour and a half... sadly it stands around 1800 words so I don't think I can submit it... and there is no way to trim it to 1500... gods know I tried.

bring it to the forums, someone might give you a different perspective that can help you trim some of it.

otherwise we can always consider it for the next Anthology, no promises, just hard work.

Where exactly would I post it? I just want to make sure I don't put it in the wrong place.

well if you are still aiming for the contest under the forum "Pathfinder Fiction Contest 2011", either Luna or Malik should be able to give you the password for that section.

If you prefer to keep it at that lenght and just want to get it published (either online or at the anthology) then under Short stories in the "Pathfinder Chronicler Writing Submissions" forum.
