Love the picture of Hendregan! This is very much how I picture him as I read the story. Just finished chapter 7. Present tense takes some getting used to, but I'm getting used to it.
Now I can't help but picture him looking like Trashcan Man in the Stand Mini-series.
And yes, present tense is jarring.

I love the present tense for certain kinds of stories, including this one. It lends an immediacy to events, and once you've read a good book in present tense, it's no longer the least bit jarring.
Some years ago a writer friend mentioned to me that her book, which I'd read, was present tense. Only then did I realize it was true. I'd read enough hardboiled detective fiction that present-tense just seemed right for the story.

The further I get in the book, the less I notice the present tense writing. "Lends an immediacy to events," this eloquently states what I was trying to wrap my head around as I get further through the story.
Another observation on writing style for this book. I have noticed that the description of what characters are doing/ facial experession is sparse. Not missing, just sparse and minimalistic. I like it. It forces the reader to pull emotion and expression out of dialogue. It is reminiscient of reading plays. It allows my imagination more license to fill in the expression and mannerisms of the characters.
