All Your Map Questions Answered

Monday, September 13, 2010

I know the question on everyone's mind this glorious Monday morning has nothing to do with what you'll be wearing to the office today, or whether you remembered to put your homework in your bag before heading off to class. No, the most pressing concern for any Paizo fan worth his salt is, "What's up with that Huge Ass Map?"

Well, loyal followers, I have good news re: the HAM: we're making continual progress! Just last week we all "ooh"ed and "aaah"ed over the final, high-resolution art from cartographer Rob Lazzaretti, who deepened all the colors, added hundreds of miniscule new coastal islands, and included more detailed representations of areas like Kyonin, the Stolen Lands, and Ustalav. We've got all the tags we can fit on the existing map, and I've gone through with a fine-toothed comb to find missing locations, misnamed cities, and incorrectly placed tags. Up next? James Jacobs and I are going to go through the whole image, giving names to as-yet-unnamed rivers, mountain ranges, islands, and other geographical features.

Check out these pictures of the current iteration of the Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Poster Map Folio and I promise I'll have brand new art (not photos) for everyone later this week.

A map so big we couldn't handle it in one piece! These will all have names very, very soon.

For what it's worth, I've always felt that my hometown of Trollhättan (Troll's Hat) would make a good fantasy-name. And about 30 minutes south we've got Alvhem (Elfhome), but some crazy Oxford professor's already used that I think.

There was a place called Trollhattan in Alphatia in the D&D Known World if I remember correctly.

Will the map be available for purchase as a stand-alone product, or as part of another product? Or both?

When do you estimate it will be available?

In November, it'll be available as the Inner Sea Poster Map Folio, a 68"x44" map broken into four 34"x22" sections.

In February, a 34"x22" version—that's a quarter of the size of the folio version—will be included with the Pathfinder Campaign Setting: World Guide—The Inner Sea hardcover.

(All dimensions are approximate.)

Could we pleeeease see at least one of those as an island (or even just a landmark) in the Shackles? You can't copyright a proper noun like Scum or Melee! You can't!*

Spoiler:

I am not a lawyer and my opinion should not be taken as legal council or a guarantee that you will not be sued by LucasArts or their subsidiaries.

LOL! Well played, Wellard. Well played.

I can't help but imagine Ned Beatty's voice saying that line again.

Isle of View ?
or even better...
Isle of Lucy ?

Heh... having just re-played Monkey Island, I was amused to re-discover that every time an island in that game is mentioned in the game play text on screen, the island name is followed by a trademark notation. That, and the game's owned by Lucasarts, a company that is VERY VERY VERY aggressive about pursuing and protecting their trademarks. So as a matter of fact, you CAN copyright things like this. Or even if you can't, Paizo's not interested in going head-to-head with Lucas to find out.

And more to the point, I'm not interested in naming an island after a comedic (if however enjoyable) game. The Shackles are SERIOUS BUSINESS!!! ;-)

Rats, I tried.

In that case - COMPLETELY NON-TRADEMARKED NAMES:

Grog Island,
Rum Island,
The Isle of Gnome (if there can be an Isle of Man...)
Whalebone.

In Scotland there is a genuine Isle of Ewe.

Which I have driven past on a number of occassions. Isle of View is a title in the Piers Anthony Xanth series

Otisville also becomes a tribute to Otis the Ranger one of the Original Greyhawk Characters.

YOU FIGHT LIKE A COW!

Grand Lodge

Uccastrog, the Isle of the Torturers (from Zothique), for a small Encarthan isle near Ustalav

Cingisle (was my homebrew isle where is a tomb of an exiled king, sort of like Napoleon)

Forgotten Realms has Whalebones

Liberty's Edge

The Island at the End of Golarion.

Every sunset an enchantment over the island, allows anyone on it's beaches to experience the terror and beauty of the Earthfall of -5293 AR. Once night falls the person is left shaken but physically unharmed. (That setting idea is a freebie!)

As for a naming contest, there simply isn't time for us to organize and conduct one before this baby has to ship. That said, we've got a LOT of names to come up with in that short time, so if there's a name you'd like to see, toss it up here now. No promises that suggestions will be used, or that they'll remain in the exact form presented.

Sooooo, did any get used? Looking over the huge (and beautiful!) map I didn't see any but I could very well have missed some.

Nope. I'm kinda paranoid about someone trying to sneak something past me.

Haha, yeah I can understand that. I'd be terrified of a trademarked or inappropriate name sneaking by.

Shadow Lodge

But you can't trademark a name "Gilligan" is public domain!!

So where did Cauldron end up again?

*ducks*

Spoiler:
Already done in Second Darkness Part 3. Admittedly it's in a demiplane, but the effect is the same.

Gutted, just realised (looking over the map) that none were in.

Maybe my suggestions were not awesome enough but I think I proved I wasn't doing anything sneaky.

I liked the idea of having a few fan suggestions on the map. Ah well, nevermind
