All Your Map Questions Answered

Monday, September 13, 2010

I know the question on everyone's mind this glorious Monday morning has nothing to do with what you'll be wearing to the office today, or whether you remembered to put your homework in your bag before heading off to class. No, the most pressing concern for any Paizo fan worth his salt is, "What's up with that Huge Ass Map?"

Well, loyal followers, I have good news re: the HAM: we're making continual progress! Just last week we all "ooh"ed and "aaah"ed over the final, high-resolution art from cartographer Rob Lazzaretti, who deepened all the colors, added hundreds of miniscule new coastal islands, and included more detailed representations of areas like Kyonin, the Stolen Lands, and Ustalav. We've got all the tags we can fit on the existing map, and I've gone through with a fine-toothed comb to find missing locations, misnamed cities, and incorrectly placed tags. Up next? James Jacobs and I are going to go through the whole image, giving names to as-yet-unnamed rivers, mountain ranges, islands, and other geographical features.

Check out these pictures of the current iteration of the Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Poster Map Folio and I promise I'll have brand new art (not photos) for everyone later this week.

A map so big we couldn't handle it in one piece! These will all have names very, very soon.

Will there be a blog titled 'Name an Island Contest' coming soon ?

That was a hint.

Liberty's Edge

+1 for the contest to name something on the HAM.

So wait... if I agree, does that make it 5... or does that make it 4+1+5?

Oh hell. +1

Can't wait to see how this turns out. I really hope there ends up being a web feature to go along with it, keying all the Paizo products to it to fuel purchase fever.

Smuggler's Shiv will be on the map, the version on the wall still has the old art.

As for a naming contest, there simply isn't time for us to organize and conduct one before this baby has to ship. That said, we've got a LOT of names to come up with in that short time, so if there's a name you'd like to see, toss it up here now. No promises that suggestions will be used, or that they'll remain in the exact form presented.

I grew up climbing Carn Llidi every year, it's a small mountain in Wales. Until I was about 12 my sister and I were told that it was actually Dadcu's (Grandfather's) Mountain - so either Carn Llidi or Dadcu's Mountain would make me immensely happy.

An island called Gont would be good. It's a nod to a great work but simple enough it shouldn't break immersion.

I wanna go to Pen Island, myself.

I guess I should also say that if you suggest something which is an easter egg to ANYTHING, either fictional or real, please include that as well. GeraintElberion's story is perfect, and his clarification of 0gre's suggestion helps us decide if we want to reference that work and risk any legal action that could come of using someone else's names, etc.

The Exchange

The island of Ebb (part of a homebrew game I was in).
Also, for any islands/locations with Greek origins/influences, I find the names of the sons of Poseidon quite evocative without being commonly known (in English):
Gadeirus
Ampheres
Evaemon
Mneseus
Elasippus
Mestor
Azaes
Diaprepes
Autochthon
Atlas
(Okay, so the last 2 are pretty well known, but most of the rest aren't)

How about Fantasy Isla....oh, nevermind.

I'd love for there to be a little chain of tiny islands called the Chisa Rocks on the map somewhere. My wife's name is Chisa, she's had a hard time of it this year (her mother is dying and we're taking care of her), and she's a huge fan of Pathfinder. I would love to see her face when she heard from someone in the company that she rocks (because she does). ^_^

Probably won't happen, but I thought I'd ask. =)

So will the big map include the area in Garund south of the Mwangi Expanse that was briefly detailed in Heart of the Jungle? Ie the Kaliasso Jungle, the Kaz'ulu triad, the Shatterfield, and the Parinarsus Wall?

The big map does add a few features along the north edge (If you look close to the picture, you'll see that it no longer has a strip of ice running all across the top), but it doesn't add any new features to the south edge.

Mount Daromyr!
Kaile Point
Lake Fayne
Vylnerral Peninsula/Islands/Peak/Swamp/etc etc

All completely open source names :-)

You better make sure to draw a kraken enveloping a ship at the edge of the map, and label it "Yer off the edge of the map, matey - tharr be monstars !"

What kind of format will the map be in? Meaning, will it be folded, or a huge roll? I assume it is probably going to be folded, but would be nice to have it as a roll because I would like to matte (sp?) it.

Folded. Shipping maps unfolded makes them MUCH more expensive, both to ship to us from our printers and to ship to you.

Ok, that's what I figured. Would be nice if there was a way to take out the creases.

Thanks James.

Mp Packs are traditionally available as a PDF, so if you take that to a company with a roller printer...

Note - I believe that this has been said to be ok for other products, if for personal use. If not, I apologise and please ignore this advice.

Yes, I did think of that. However, and of course if it is allowed, but not only would I be paying for the PDF, but also to have it printed, which I know would be quite expensive for this size map.

Finally, I hear the paper being used for the hardcopy version is going to be nicer than usual, so if I were to use similar quality paper (which I would like to do so) it would be even more money.

I'll probably just deal with the creases, not a huge deal. Maybe they won't be too bad.

Thanks, though.

So you're saying Giligan's is out?

If you are very careful you can actually iron wrinkles/creases out of a map. You need to lay the map paper (of good quality) between two damp-but-not-too-damp cloths, and then gently iron over the upper cloth. It is not 100% perfect, and you need to be careful the map uses a synthetic, heat-resistant ink, so test a corner first to make sure it won't discolor. I did that once for some papers I got wrinkly and it worked okay. If you have LOTS of time you can just lay the creases under a heavy press...but who has time for that?

Framing galleries are also really good at decreasing things, as they did to an old movie poster I got framed. When the Rise of the Runelords Map Folio came out all those years ago, I took the two poster maps in that (Sandpoint & Varisia) to Kinkos and had them laminate them back to back so I just had one sturdy map to take to the game I ran. In that case, there isn't even a hint of a crease, but I have a feeling this map will be too big to get laminated, at least all in one piece.

Will the map be available for purchase as a stand-alone product, or as part of another product? Or both?

When do you estimate it will be available?

The poster map will be available as a standalone product in the Pathfinder Campaign Setting line. If progress on it continues apace and there are no delays in printing or customs, it is currently slated to be in sometime in November. You can preorder it now, in fact, right here.

I'm sure Kassen will be included now along the Tourondel, but will there be anything developed near it in the Fangwood (or added to the Fangwood in general)?

Here goes nothing:

"Ella's Isle"

Background:

I played in a 3e campaign in the early 2000s and my character, a halfling rogue named Ella, got it in her head during an expedition to a newly discovered chain of islands that one of them should be named after her -- Ella's Isle. Through bribery, trickery, and a bit of halfling charm she managed to get in good with the royal cartographer and came *this* close to getting the island named for her when her subterfuge was unmasked and she had to flee in the night.

I will be purchasing this the nanosecond it is available. I still proudly display my world of Greyhawk map (in fact, no joke, that map got me to buy dungeon which I hadn't done in years. That issue: temple of Demogorgon, got me back into gaming. so, thank you Paizo!)

This is something I am thinking about having done. If I have to get it done in two pieces, that's ok. Probably don't have the wall space to hang it up as one big piece, anyways. But a flat, laminated map(s) sounds really good right now.

Anyone have any idea on the actual dimension of the map?

oh oh, can you name one of the islands Ulguland? eh? eh?
