I don't see anything in the item that suggests you can't use it mid combat.

Maruta is flying prone. If you rule he must stand first, instead he will fly up to the same spot, and use 1-action Faerie Dust (Will DC 20) against the king, which gives maruta Concealment due to his Blood Magic...

There have been a LOT of crits in this combat.

I am attempting a couple "lethal" d6 attacks while the king is near full health.

With Infamy on the line, and no clear way to talk our ways out (we did, um, rob the vault...), I will shift to non-lethal attacks (-2) later.

If I survive!

The king used a lightning bolt and wall of thorns.

I'm hoping he doesn't have fireball.

I too will switch to nonlethal attacks after this, but I guess I'm holding the line for now.

Desmond healed everyone, so we had at least 1 10-minute break, probably more than 1.

That was a particularly hard fight, mostly because of the dice roller favoring the baddies and tilted against you guys.

You did take time to do healing so you also had time to refocus if you need to.

Despite the narrative, there's no mechanical consequences for taking your time.

I'll post tomorrow - I'm having internet issues again at home (my ISP sucks)... I can get text (like the forums) but seeing the map can be problematic. I'm using a pocket wifi 5G hotspot which sometimes has a problem grabbing the maps.

Perfectly understandable. Both obstacles were displayed so I can see why it would seem like both could be attempted.

I’d roll right now, but those are not my strong checks.

Since you might get to roll for the next obstacle, a little strategery is not a bad choice.
