Before you submit post, take note near the bottom a section that says "How to format your text""Show" for the simple coding on these forums. If you have any out-of-character or out-of-game questions please post them in the discussion thread. LET'S DO THIS! WOO!
Post here when you see this.

Alright folks as you check in, I'd like this (the italicized) information in your character's header. This goes in the "race" section on your character's profile. It doesn't have to be in this order, just make sure that all of the information is there. If you like to include more, go for it. This is the minimum.
race class (specialization and/or archetype) level | HP: X/X | AC X | Fort +X, Ref +X, Will +X | Perc +X | Spells 1st: X/X |
Also, if there is any unusual mechanics that you are using (i.e. you had to go over it with GMs in the past) then lets go through it now, before the game begins.
I am happy to answer any other questions.

A haunting melody fills the air. It's melancholy, but calm, like the cry of a far-off wind through the valley of some distant, lonely planet. The robed figure, seated back to a wall, draws a long final note, then lowers the peculiar-looking instrument it holds in its four hands.
Without looking up, a voice emerges from the figure's cowled visage...
Well met. It pleases me that you enjoy my song.

Hmm, it appears much more difficult to protect oneself from the cold in Starfinder than in Pathfinder. There is no winter clothing option, no mention of protection from cold in the Environmental Protection section of armor (even though it mentions vacuum of space).
The Thermal Capacitor upgrade
Level 1 (120 credits) only protects mild cold and heat
Level 6 (1800 credits) to protect from severe cold and heat
takes a valuable armor upgrade slot, and for brand new, or nearly new characters even the level 1 is very expensive.

Environmental protection is worded to say it "protects you from the vacuum of space for a few days." Seeing as the vacuum of space has a temp of ~-455°F, I think environmental protection should be able to cover cold weather.
It expressly says environmental protection does not cover "smoke inhalation, inhaled poisons, toxic atmospheres, or corrosive atmospheres" which would need greater protection to endure.
From my understanding the thermal capacitor protects from extreme Temps and offers resistance to temp related environmental damage (depending on level of uograde) which is why it costs more than just a suit with environmental protection.
To me, it sounds like "if you are going somewhere, make sure you have armor and that it's charged" since duration seems directly linked to armor item level (1 day per level). I know that basic armor is level-0, so I would assume less than 1 day at continued use at that point.

Though reading about how temp works in space (just briefly last night), it appears that one doesn't actually cool off quickly due to lack of transfer other than radiation.
Either way, we'll deal with things as needed.

The context of 2e environmental protections is that 1e environmental protections protected against tons of environments that were intended to give the location a dynamic feel via hazard consideration. So, with 2e they want the environmental protections to protect from less. What they've run into is a problem of nerfing too hard and consequent consistency issues.
My goal is to find somewhere where the environmental protections do something while also leaving room for meaningful dynamic environments.
As of now, I am ruling that environmental protections in a non-space environment shift the severity of a temperature environment by 1 step toward normal. Thoughts?

I think that's sensible.

I'm also doing a bit of google-fu here: our (Ant)arctic temps average a solid -44°F, firmly in the "extreme cold" category. That's a polar region on an otherwise ideally-habitable planet.
Something like Europa on the other hand, a more fitting analogue here, is more than -250⁰F at its equator. Definitely some "incredible cold."
In the ideal case then, we're looking at minor cold damage every hour ― more likely, minor cold damage every 10 min.
I think we'll have to stick this one close to the ship, what with exhaustion possible on top of the damage. This will be tricky seeing as there's not a good place to land close by. I'd also recommend we err on the side of being ready to flee. Combat is going to be extra dangerous here.

Okay. I am going to rule that the tent in the camping kit behaves the same way that the environmental protections do except 2 steps instead of one. This will not stack with the environmental protections of armor.
Happy Thanksgiving all!
If you want to post about the trip to the ship and the ship please feel free. If you've got a hankering, feel free to describe the ship. It is not a combat oriented ship. It is about the size of the millennium falcon. And, it is not raggedy.
