The group pools their knowledge and experiences and learn some things. The damage to the bow of the Hydra's Fang combined with the standing water even in the middle of the hold and the living quarters, the water damage to the crates, suggest the water has been in the ship for some time.
Andros's inspection of the swollen-shut front hold door indicate it would have been difficult to open and likely has not been opened for days.
Pip is a bit hazy on the distances involved but he approximates the ship, in its damaged condition, took at least a week to travel to Diobel. With as much water as the bow has taken on that section has been flooded.
Avi draws upon his knowledge of surviving in the wild that, given the time that has passed, humans in the hold are doubtful to have survived all they've endured.
Nails the Unbreakable |
Nails grunts as all the information is discussed, ”Whelp. Can’t do much about it now. Let’s finish the mission. Hopefully the tablets are in a box here.”
He starts looking.
Perc: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Nails the Unbreakable |
In the room with the zombies poor dead slaves?
Nails starts beating on the door or trying to break it open or something, if the group agrees to that plan.
GM Shadow Dragon |
In the room with thezombiespoor dead slaves?
WHAT?!?! I've never and I mean NEVER seen the author hide the McGuffin in a 'guarded' situation...
Nails starts beating on the door or trying to break it open or something, if the group agrees to that plan.
So it's "swollen shut" but there's no Disable Device DC, Strength Check, etc. listed. So I guess just 'untie' the chains and pull real hard?
After turning up no tablets in the other sections of the hold Nails asks the others if they are ready for him to open the door...
Avi Solrem |
Avi sighs and nods.
Yup, ready. Push it open...
Pip Muzak |
Pip puts the key away and holds his already loaded sling, "We got this."
Nails has nothing else to do yet, if you were waiting for either of us to post.
Avi Solrem |
Avi's prep:
- Cast shield on self (Duration 4m/40rds)
- Cast gravity bow (Duration 4m/40rds) on any teammates wielding a bow or crossbow (no seriously, please take it if you will, it advances the arrow damage die, e.g., 1d8 -> 2d6)
Nails the Unbreakable |
Literally none of the other three of us have bows or crossbows, sorry!
It’s also a personal only spell.
Avi Solrem |
@Avi: If you could add in the Mage Armor and Shield spell to Avi's AC at the end of his stat line where 'Active Conditions' are that would be great.
Yeah when I get to my laptop today I’ll do that. Editing profiles seems to have been disabled on mobile.
Literally none of the other three of us have bows or crossbows, sorry!
It’s also a personal only spell.
Ah, that’s right. Forgot it was personal, my mistake.
GM Shadow Dragon |
Sounds like everyone is prepped!
As Nails flexes his beastly, bulging muscles on the door it resists, creaks, and then flies open. But lurking behind the door are three creatures who rush out into the hold!
Andros remembers these creatures from his studies at Sarenrae's temple - they're lacedons, a type of ghoul that favors aquatic environments.
@Andros: Your Knowledge (Religion) check allows Andros to know one bit of information about ghouls; what would you like to know?
Ini Avi: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Ini Nails: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Init Pip: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Init Andros: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Init Lacedons: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
The Dice Roller Curse! (tm) strikes again.
Two of the lacedons race out of the hold and one attempts to bite Nails while the other thinks Avi looks tasty!
Bite, Cover Nails: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 3 - 4 = 161d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Bite, Cover, Partial Cover Avi: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 3 - 2 = 51d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
And Nails was bit.
@Nails: I need two Fort saves please and mark off 6 HP. I believe Andros healed everyone after the last combat so Nails should be at full HP at the start of this fight.
Round 1 - Lacedons
Lacedons
Avi
Andros
Pip
Nails
The entire party is UP!
Nails the Unbreakable |
Ok, so Nails has Combat Reflexes and it appears that Blue and Red would have provoked. However, both of them are attacking through cover and cover negates attacks of opportunity. Does Nails get one or both AoOs? I’ll roll those first, if I get them, then the fort saves, then my turn of actions. Let me know. Also are either fort saves from spells or poisons? I assume not but figure it can’t hurt to ask while asking the first question.

Nails token was on the side of the door so I assumed he would open it towards him. By the cover rules the lacedons movement would be behind cover so they would not provoke. Unfortunately neither save is from a spell, SLA, or a poison. Roll the save for 'Effect 1' first; I'm sure you know what it is but that way if the curse strikes again you can use a re-roll.
Nails the Unbreakable |
Ah, ok. Please post an image of the door’s location so I can plan my movement (if any) to get into a better position.
Fort 1: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Fort 2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
Fort 2 Reroll + GM Stars: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 9 + 2 = 22
Nails the Unbreakable |
Also, are the enemies medium sized? If so are they taking up two spaces or one? Or are our images too small for the spaces on the map?
Avi Solrem |
Avi grimaces in disgust as a lacedon lunges at him.
That was close... can't let that happen.
He backs up a step and incants a fireball onto it.
[5ft step] N
[standard] Cast flaming sphere on BLUE
Fire damage BLUE, DC16 reflex negates: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 5) = 13
And for good measure...
[move] Draw light crossbow
GM Shadow Dragon |
Perception DuMoire: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
"What's going on down there? Let me go and I'll help you!"
Escape Artist with ACP: 1d20 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 - 2 = 16
Avi asks the blue lacedon some burning questions:
Reflex: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Which the lacedon can't handle and gets hot under the collar!
Blue takes all 13! Nails, Pip, and Andros are still UP!
Nails the Unbreakable |
Moved Avi back.
Nails, seeing a better spot open up, steps over and unleashes a combo of strikes, ”Haha! Take that slimeball.”
IUS Flurry 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 for B: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Pip Muzak |
Pip pulls out a wand and tries to heal the dwarf, ”Gotcha buddy.”
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
GM Shadow Dragon |
go with defenses
They don't have DR but they do have Channel Resistance +2.
The two remaining lacedons act. Red grabs the lantern providing light and smashes it into the floor, setting the ship on fire! Yellow skirts around the burning flame that cooked his friend and tries to bite Pip!
Reminder: I didn't write this scenario I'm just running it. I'm going to consider the oil lamp being grabbed as a move and thrown down as a standard (basically a thrown weapon). That would normally provoke an AoO but the door is still there/open so Nails does not get to take one.
Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 61d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
But misses the little guy completely! Maybe gnome doesn't taste as good as dwarf?
Round 2 - Lacedons
Lacedons [2 left]
Avi
Andros
Pip
Nails [-4 HP]
The entire party is UP! Reminder: There is a fire on the ship that needs to be extinguished.
Perc Avi: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (15) + 0 = 15
Perc Nails: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Perc Pip: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10 (low-light)
Perc Andros: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Nails estimates the fire needs to be extinguished within one minute to keep the Hydra's Fang from becoming an inferno.
GM Shadow Dragon |
Andros tries to extinguish the flames, regardless of the danger.do i have to move to the fire square? that would give Pip a spot to move to...then I can get behind it next round...
Andros can stand where he is and push water onto the flames since the PCs are standing in "a foot of brackish bilge water" from the box text earlier.
Nails the Unbreakable |
Nails and Pip are waiting for their turn, hoping that nasty fireball moves.
Avi Solrem |
Moved Avi back.
Huh, my slides edit must not have stuck last night :/ Thank you.
Avi directs the fireball lateraly to begin consuming another lacedon.
[move] Flaming sphere onto RED
Fire damage RED, DC16 reflex negates: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 2) = 10
[move] Reload crossbow
Nails the Unbreakable |
Nails steps closer and flurries at the enemy nearest his allies (yellow), ”Dirty bastard undead, here is some fist!”
IUS Flurry 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22 for B: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
and
IUS Flurry 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19 for B: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
GM Shadow Dragon |
Pip moves back and Nails fires a left jab followed by a right uppercut on the Yellow lacedon!
Red sidesteps the fire to attack Nails:
Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 161d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Scratch: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 91d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Scratch: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 231d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Scratch, Crit confirm?: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 91d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
And managed to land a bite and a scratch.
Nails will need to make 2 Fort saves please.
Yellow is not happy with Andros's attempts to extinguish the fire and attempts to stop him:
Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 181d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Scratch: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 181d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Scratch: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 121d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
And it also lands a bite and a scratch.
Andros will need to make 2 Fort saves please.
Round 3 - Lacedons
Lacedons [Yellow -9]
Avi
Andros [-5]
Pip
Nails [-14]
The entire party is UP! I'm going to assume Avi moves the flaming sphere so I'll make the Reflex save now:
Reflex: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Avi gives a lacedon the hot foot!
@Avi: Please roll the damage and I'd suggest burning the one that Nails beat up. ;)
Nails the Unbreakable |
Fort 1: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
Fort 2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
And he punches more enemies!
”Punchnpunchnpunchin!”
IUS Flurry 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 for B: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
and
IUS Flurry 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19 for B: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Attacking either the injured enemy if still up or switching to the other one.
GM Shadow Dragon |
Since we're close to the end I'll bot Avi's attack since Nails will:
Nails delivers a massive body shot and the Yellow lacdeon crumples to the ground and no longer moves.
Avi directs his flaming sphere of DEATH onto Red Which already failed its Reflex save above:
Flaming Sphere: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 5) = 9
And gives it a nice sear on one side.
Andros is UP!
