Kalhoun's words cause the other azzra (yellow) to consider their actions. They draw back their bowstring, like their ally, but withhold its release giving those assembled time to talk.

With all three opponents "shaken" by your diplomatic efforts, they are clearly willing to hear you out.

I will keep the tracker up below, just in case, but otherwise, feel free to roleplay out your diplomatic efforts.

The rain of meteors seems to be more natural than magical in nature. While a halo of asteroids and debris circle the planet, the largest pieces of the remains of the planet's dead moon are locked in a geosynchronis orbit, which just so happens to be at a point directly above the coordinates provided for the outpost. As circling rock and debris collide with the larger mass, they are deflected off course and, occassionally, break off additional pieces from the shattered moon. The colliding objects that veer closer to the massive planet are quickly sent hurtling toward its surface by the planet's tremendous gravitational pull.

It would seem then, that the meteor storm is the result of random chance--some might even say, "luck".

"The azzras have shown their loyalty to me and faith to the causes of freedom and choice that their divine patron and mine, Desna, hold dear." The Exile replies. "But, can the same be said for you?"

"You claim to be followers of Desna and have shown some knowledge of the goddess, but that does not explain where you came from or why you saw fit to come to this temple," notes the Exile. "Your weapons and words suggest that you are something more than pilgrims or travelers looking for respite."

"Indeed, your words suggest that you have allied with the very elders that drove me out of the village. They feared the Starbeast for what it was--a traveler from beyond! They could not see that that was where I have been called by Desna to go--to explore." The Exile continues. "In my dreams, the visions given by the goddess, I saw the Starbeast repeatedly. I knew that its destiny was entwined with my own. When I discovered the devices here, those that allowed me to see beyond our atmosphere and to gaze closely upon the Starbeast and those things among the stars, I realized that it was the key. I was the one, called by Desna, to overcome the Starbeast. Either I was meant to destroy it completely, showing my people that we need not fear that which is beyond our world, or I would learn from its remains, harness its starfaring abilities so that I, along with my people, could venture out into the stars with it."

"But, now? Now, that calling has been denied to me! The Starbeast is dead. I can find no trace of its remains! My destiny has been stolen from me! And all this occurs just as you arrive. What would you have me make of all this?" The Exile demands. "Answer me! Or else, a few arrows will be the least of your concerns and you will see that the goddess has given me even greater gifts to use against you than those that you have already seen!"

We came here because this is a lost temple of Desna and to see what state it was in. And yeah. I can understand your need to explore - I too dreamt of travelling among the stars and now I am doing so. If you want to come with us, so can you.

She frowns. As for the Star Beast, it attacked us as we came in and we were forced to defend it. The only piece I was able to retrieve was one of it's quill feathers which got embedded in our hull. The rest of it ...

She ponders for a bit.

As for your destiny. Yes, it does seem we have ... inadvertently taken it from you. But there is another way. Come with us.

Besides. Did you have a plan to destroy the Star Beast from down here?

Come with you? To the stars?" The trollkin parrots pensively. His face bears a strange mixture of both hope and suspicion.

Vega Capella wrote:

"I can't say that I had gotten so far as to yet devise a method," concedes the trollkin with a hint of embarassment.

Vega Capella wrote:

Most of the computer files hold plentiful records, charts, and instrument measurements used to help track the stars and determine astronomical events. Neverthless, such are quite limited for a temple of the Church of Desna and it is evident that this outpost was intended to serve primarily as little more than a waystation for travelers and faithful alike on their way to other holy sites.

Among the records are references to some known space hazards in the area. One of them references the suspected presence of spacefaring creature witha long wormlike body, two appendages, and a narrowed tail, which the records indicate is a Besmaran whelp.Considered mostly for being the subject of spacer legend, the name "Besmaran whelp" is a catchall title for a wildly diverse group of immense space-dwelling aliens, which scientists are still researching if they are one species or several. For the most part, Besmaran whelps typically feed on energy their favorite meal being the power cores of starships. Otherwise, they vary wildly in appearance.

Gold-Flecked Black does the cephalopoid version of a shrug.

"Sometimes you just have to roll the dice, and let the chips fall where they may. If you don't take a gamble every so often, preferring to live an utterly risk-free existence, you will never see the wonders that the universe has to offer."

Kalhoun recognizes that his moment has come and takes up his best parade rest before beginning the recruitment speech. "If you believe your destiny lies among the stars, joining us as we leave is your best chance to meet it. We are all members of the Starfinder Society, a group of adventurers who have also found a purpose in the skies. Our motto is 'explore, report, cooperate,' and while we pursue those goals, we venture to the far reaches of the universe, discovering all the wonders that the gods have created. I serve as an ambassador for a smaller group called the Stewards, who seek to maintain peace throughout the galaxy. But there are many paths, and we can help you find the one that is right for you if you are willing to come with us."

Vega removes her holy symbol of Desna and gives it to the trollkin.

This is the symbol of the Goddess. Keep it. I'll get another when I get back to Absalom Station - where we come from. Wear it with pride and humility in the Faith of the Goddess. And there are many Desnians among the stars that you can learn from.

The trollkin accepts the offered gift, holding it up to his ear for a moment. "You would have me go and travel with you?" inquires the trollkin. "I--I would like that."

Once the party has managed to get the exile to agree to clear out of the outpost, they are able to secure the site, access the command-center computers, and retrieve all relevant information requested by the hiring organization. There is no concrete information on the system indicating a reason for the abandonment of the colony. Some extrasolar force may well have come over the colony but there is no concrete information on what this force was.

Vega knows, however, that many Desnans are carefree and prone to impulse. For them, the call of the stars can act as an overwhelming force and engagement in spontaneous travel is common.

Using the map of the outpost, the party is free to explore the remainder of the complex.

If you check out the Office:
You find that this tight room contains little beyond an imposing plastic desk and an nearby chair. A single exit door leads to the northeast.

This room was once the private quarters for the outpost’s commanding officer; the exile claimed the room as their personal lair. Inside, you discover items the exile has stolen or hoarded over the years, including journals, electronic postcards, souvenirs, and maps left by past travelers.
The value of the items is 400 credits.

If you check out the Armory:
You find this ransacked room contains supply lockers that line the walls of this thirty-foot-wide circular room. Varied pieces of equipment are visible within some of the open lockers, while others are piled on the floor in front of hastily cleared units. Doors exit this chamber to the west and southwest.

If you check the lockers here, you may open the spoiler below:

Spoiler:
The lockers here contain four incendiary grenades I and a set of squad defiance series armor.

If you succeed at a DC 16 Perception check, you notice a hidden compartment behind one of the lockers.

If you check out the Mess Hall:
You find this room contains an L-shaped plastic table and accompanying chairs, which are haphazardly shoved or carelessly overturned in the northwest area of this circular space. Doors exit to the south and east of this otherwise empty chamber.

What would you like to do?

The trollkin listens intently to Vega's words. He looks relaxed and, for the first time, somewhat at peace beleiving he has finally found a kindred spirit.

Anyone who has attempted a Perception check in the Armory may do so.

"I was exiled by the village elders. I suspect that I would not be welcome there." The trollkin laments. Vega ponders that. And I don't have the appropriate magics either. I'm a wizard, dealing in arcane magic rather than a mystic like you ... and my mother. I wonder what sort of mystic you are? My mother is a Star Shaman. Maybe I should take you to meet them. They live and work in a temple like this one but ... much more modern, and it also can fly from star to star. This one is over 200 years old and ... well ... it could use some work.

She checks to see if any of the remote telescopes are still functioning and, if so, returned to the 'park' position with the domes closed. She also downloads as much of the accumulated data as she can to take back to the Society and the Church of Desna.

I'll give them a call when we get back to our ship. Maybe they'll take you on as an astronomer-priest acolyte.

"I believe I am what one might call an 'overlord'," replies the trollkin. "I think--or at least thought--that I had to become a dominant force if I was to live a life that was free of the oppression of others. I believe it my calling to lead others to the stars. A 'Star Shaman', eh? It would seem that I still have much to learn. Perhaps, I should begin anew as an acolyte."

Rule of Two

Honoring the future-potential-acolyte's wishes, the party returns directly to the Pegasus and returns back to Absalom Station.

Upon arrival, Guidance debriefs the Starfinders.“Welcome back, Starfinders. The contracting organization, the Church of Desna, is eager to review the data you have recovered. I’ve prepared a list of subsequent missions that might appeal to you, once you’re properly debriefed. There are a multitude of other lost outposts in Near Space, and with your experience, we hope you will take these assignments into consideration. Now, what have you to report?"

As far as I understand it ... an Overlord mystic doesn't have to truly dominate, but they sometimes make great leaders, and emissaries. But, it's up to you what you want to do. Train as a Starfinder, attend the universities, go work in a Desnian Temple ... whatever you want.

Vega Capella wrote:

"Hello to Guidance." The trollkin parrots, showing there is still much he doesn't quite understand. "As for my given name, it is of no longer of any concern. I have travelled--I am travelling--forward. That part of my life is one I wish to put behind."

The trollkin looks ponderously for a moment, then posits, "I should allow myself to be called something, I suppose. Perhaps, one of you could suggest a name for me?"

We are at the end of the adventure, though feel free to continue to roleplaying if you wish. This group has been a lot of fun, brought some great characters for the NPCs to interact with, and really encouraged me to try to make this table of a repeatable as memorable and unique to play as possible!
