I will purchase 3 sets of winter clothes in total. One for me and two extra.

Yorah hears Lilyana before walking into the store. She packs two sets of clothes into her backpack for now, and leaves one in her hands. She moves out, and walks straight to Lilyana. She huffs.

"Ugh, I think I packed too much. I could be slowing us down. Can you hold onto these for me?" the half orc gives Lilyana an awkward, slow wink.

I'll use the other extra set as blankets if necessary.

With their discussion with the survivor done Ai knew she couldn't ignore what was happening. She also had a hunch she should let her family know what was going on before they left. Ai followed along to the store and said, "I don't know why but I think if we have loved ones, we should let them know we are leaving. I think this might take longer than it seems on the surface."

When they reached the store Ai went through and purchased a couple of pairs of winter clothing and some extra rations seemed a smart investment as well. "Well, other than checking in with my family I am ready. Our home is to the south, so it won't be out of the way."

I'll figure out the math for everything once I get home from work. Ai wants at least two pairs of winter clothes, an extra blanket or two, and some additional rations.

"I suppose the glory of victory shouldn't be spoiled by suffering with a chill," Maq'la acknowledges.

When Ai suggests it'll be a while until they're are back, she replies, "I don't see why we can't be back for a hot dinner at the Stoat tonight, but I'm also not selfish enough to head off to claim victory alone before my companions are ready. We will go when all are set, so long as it won't be too long a delay."

Good call to go shopping. My gear is up to date in Pathbuilder, and I have 8 GP (plus a whopping 8 CP) left to spend, if we have additional needs someone wants to suggest. I also pasted a screenshot of what I bought on Discord.

"I don't think my father needs to be alerted, Elven perception of time, and all. We can't be planning to be gone long enough to where an elf would say it's been a long time, hah," she says with some amount of derision in her voice at her longer-lived father.

After that, she turns to Yorah and winks in response, while taking the extra winter clothes and putting them on so as to keep her hands free to reload, aim, and fire whenever the time comes.

I believe the winter clothing should make me fine in terms of equipment.

Vhekk nods. "I have no family to speak of in this town, but I am waiting for... someone important to me here." At Yorah's words, he nods and follows the rest of the group into the general store. "Regardless, I am not at all used to the temperatures this far north - I almost froze to death just a few weeks ago, or at least that's how it felt, and I would not like experience the current climate without preparation."

Once inside, he reaches into his pocket, and produces his coin purse, pulling out a handful of silver pieces and proffering them to the shopkeeper. "I would like to purchase some winter clothing, please. Also..." He takes a piece of paper and a pen, writing a brief note on it in the flowing Kelish script. "If a Qadiran girl named Amestri finds her way here, could you give this to her?"

Vhekk's Letter:
Amestri,

If you're reading this, you have managed to escape your shackles in Qadira, just like we always said we would. As much as I'd like to meet you here in Heldren, I've left, and am unlikely to be back for some time - others are in need of my help. If you leave word of where you're going, I will try to find you as soon as I can.

Will also be purchasing winter clothes.

Noemy joins the others in traipsing through the town's few stores for warm winter gear. She picks up a small white fur throw and has the shopkeep quickly fashion it into a warm cloak sized for her tiny frame. She shows it off to the others with a twirl and a "Ha! Turn it inside out and I can blend in with the snow!"

Winter clothing for me. Why are snowshoes 10 whole GP??? If someone has spare GP and bulk, don't forget the time-honored 10 foot pole!

To Maq'la she comments "I do like the idea of coming back tonight! But who knows what we'll find out there. And that lady that got kidnapped is probably still waiting and hoping for someone to come along. We might be away for a while."

"And the beer!" Noemy makes sure to swing by the tavern, get a small to-go barrel and put it in Maq'la's backpack. "Are we ready? Because I think I'm ready."

Assuming there is no complaint, she looks to Vhekk to take the lead but scurries around him the whole way, full of energy.

Ai was relieved everyone seemed to agree with being prepared to be out longer than they expected, or hoped, they would be. It saddened her to hear that so few had family around, but it was what it was, and she knew she was lucky to still have her parents. She finished her shopping in short order, 2 sets of winter clothing and a couple extra blankets were all she really needed. "I'm ready when you are, I'll show you where my home is and stop to let my parents know I may be gone for a few days, it won't take long to do so."

I added the winter clothing, did anyone find prices/weight for blankets?

As the rest of the group makes ready, Vhekk buckles on his new, heavier coat and does what he can with the laces of his sturdier boots, trying to ward off the biting chill. At Ai's words, he nods. "I have few arrangements to make in town - I have just returned from a hunting trip, in fact, so to set out again is a simple matter of not unpacking my equipment. Nevertheless, I understand that many have more... permanent ties to this town, and I will gladly help you make whatever preparations you need." Now appropriately insulated, he picks up his staff and his ghironda from where they sit by the door and walks out into the town square. "Lead the way, Ai, and once you are done, I will take you to where the ambush took place. It's a ways south, on the road to Demgazi. Bandits often use the wood to mask their approach, so caution would be prudent in that area, even without the presence of the frost-souled fey."

After some much-needed shopping, you head south along the Borders Road, the sky to the west and south so dark you cannot even make out the Three Tine Mountains to the west, normally a clear landmark.

The road nestles itself in the hills between the Gilded Vale and the relatively smaller copses of the Sedgewood. The air grows steadily colder as you approach the Border Wood, and you catch glimpses of snow-dappled trees further in the wood.

As you approach the location given you by the Ulfen warrior, a cold stillness grips the air, sending shivers not entirely composed of frost down your spines. The road ahead is littered with debris and the corpse of slain people and horses, one carriage standing adrift and horseless on the open road while the other has been tipped and broken, dragged by now-still horses to the treeline, their bodies caked in frozen blood and sweat of fear. Noises can be heard from within the tipped carriage; scratching, hungry sounds.

To the south, more bodies gave fallen around what appears to be a statue of ice refusing to melt, beyond which lies a snowy path into the forest.

She grips her staff, crouches, and slowly starts inching closer to the carriage.

Ai stopped briefly at her home when they passed close to her home and let her parents know she was going on a rescue mission with a group and she would be back as soon as she could. She had no idea just how long she would be gone and if she had she just might have backed out but it would be far too late by the time she realized just how deep the snow-rabbit's hole they would have to go.

As they approached the carriage and heard the sounds within Ai was disturbed by what was revealed. Knowing that something might try to kill them on site Ai activated her aura and prepared for battle as water and wood swirled around her.

As the group walks down the road to their destination, Lily remains a few feet or so behind the rest of the pack. "Don't mind me if I stay a bit behind you lot... I'm a sniper primarily, and I'm not really... confident close to melee!" She chuckles to herself a little afterwards.

Carriage Location
Remembering what the Ulfen man said prior, Lilyana steels herself for gunfire and stays a comfy 70 feet or so away from the carriage. She scooches around first, making sure that no one is in her line of sight to the carriage doors. Raising her firearm to the boarded carriage doors, just in case, she just coldly states "Ready to fire when necessary" She grins gleefully at the familiarity of the situation: cold weather and firearms, her favorite combination.

On the road to the ambuscade, Vhekk stays close to the front of the group, casting wary glances towards the frigid forest as his teeth chatter in the cold air. At Lilyana's words, he nods. "I believe I will be able to do what is needed when the time comes to fight, though I confess I am no warrior like Maq'la."

Boreal Ambuscade:
As the group approaches the site of the ambush, Vhekk slows his pace, his talons tightening around the grip of his staff. "Foul creatures have been here, and fell deeds performed. I barely recognize the forest anymore - it's been twisted, perverted by whatever interloper lies at the heart of this storm." He nods towards the ice statue and the corpses that surround it. "I take it the Captain perished there? As the group approaches the carriage, he readies his staff, approaching with the weapon held in a defensive stance. "The survivor reported zombies among the bandits' ranks, did he not? Let us put their souls to rest, and then we may seek vengeance on those who would desecrate the dead in such a way."

"Yuck." Noemy picks her way through the site of carnage with careful steps. "There's our zombie carriage. Definitely not wolves." She brandishes her tethered needle. "While they're all still trapped, let's stab that carriage a few times. Make sure the zombies are double dead, before anything else comes by to see what we're doing here."

She leads the way toward the carriage, more brazenly than Yorah.

Depending on the size of the carriage and the strength of the wooden walls, I could see us starting this by stabbing through the walls to skewer a few of them to start with. Depends on the specifics though.

The carriage lies on its side, its front axle broken and the back bent. The exposed bottom of the carriage, which is where the scratching seems to be heavily concentrated, is the sturdiest and most reinforced part of the carriage. The door to the carriage now lies on its top side, away from the ground, and indeed has an object shut in it. With the driver's seat in the front/facing the wood, you'd say that side is also fairly secure. The weakest point of the carriage at this time is likely to be the top of the carriage, made of canvas stretched over a frame. Perhaps fortunately, your approach was from the opposite side (the bottom) so the zombies have not tried clawing their way out that way yet.

If you're going to poke the zombies while they're inside, it would be best to circle round to that side and attempt to slash them through the canvas. Through the structure, the zombies are concealed and have greater cover.

Someone could also climb on top and open the door, enticing the zombies to try to get at them and calling their positions, which would reduce the cover to standard cover at some risk.

At Noemi's suggestion, Maq'la looks over the carriage. "Hmmmm, while that's not the path to glory, I'm not opposed. That said, it looks like we'd be poking blind, and I suspect as soon as we start poking through, they'll bust right through that canvas.

"What if we stand back a bit. I could throw a dart or two–maybe I'll get lucky–and then we can be ready to clobber them when they bust through that canvas and run toward us."

Headshots, torso-shots, and so on!" (i.e. I don't want One Shot One Kill to miss)

Regardless of the answer, she pools all her focus to the firearm in front of her, focusing on where the zombies will likely burst out, trying her best to remain hidden and calm. "Sure is good zombies are dumb enough not to go through the cloth side to get at us." Noemy chirps "I like the idea Maq'la! How about we circle around to the side with the cloth covering, keeping far away so they don't sense us coming. Then we run in and toss what we've got - logs, needles, darts, and bullets, whatever those are. Since the coverings not going to protect them much, we'll probably get to soften them a bit before they get out."

It appears as “X persistent [type] damage,” where “X” is the amount of damage dealt and “[type]” is the damage type. Like normal damage, it can be doubled or halved based on the results of an attack roll or saving throw. Instead of taking persistent damage immediately, you take it at the end of each of your turns as long as you have the condition, rolling any damage dice anew each time. After you take persistent damage, roll a DC 15 flat check to see if you recover from the persistent damage. If you succeed, the condition ends.

In order to simplify basic and simple combat such as this, I'll have you roll your initiative and if it's before the zombies, simply resolve your actions along with your initiative roll. If you go after the zombies, wait until they've gone to resolve your actions. Finally ready to fire, Lilyana first loads her arquebus before then firing with a loud BANG and a flash from her muzzle, before continuing to back away from the Zombies. Being in the cold with her firearm (her favorite combination), if you look carefully, you can see a smile on Lilyana's face as she fires.

I confused the ranges of the Musket and the Arquebus, so I'll continue striding further away still to keep distance between the Zombies and her

Vhekk takes aim at one of the undead flanking Maq'la and fires off a shot from his bow, but seeing the warrior surrounded, he quickly unstrings his weapon and rushes up to her side, attempting to provide what aid he can in melee range.

When the undead appear in the open, Yorah quickly pulls a thorn out of one of her pouches. Gently holding it between her fingers, she focuses on the undead and extends her will into the thorn itself.

A whip-like vine appears as she lashes into the air to slash at the nearest undead.

Lilyana's shot drops Alpha with a clean head shot, and Yorah's spell slices Gamma neatly down the middle.

Vhekk and Noemy gang up on Beta, with Noemy scoring the killing blow.

Almost as suddenly as it began, your first encounter as a party is over. Taking quick assessment, you realize you were able to dispatch the undead without a dingle injury on your part.

The corpses of the zombies quickly freeze over as the icy cold within them overtakes their inanimate corpses. They easy shatter to the touch in this state.

Boom, headshot.

Lilyana strokes her hands together after seeing the last zombie fall, and approaches the statue of ice. She wonders what could have made the statue of ice so... icy, for lack of a better word. "Anyone knows what causes this, exactly?" Walking around, she pokes the zombies with the butt of her arquebus to make sure they are well and truly dead.

As the zombies fall to the group's concerted attack, Vhekk nods approvingly, grinning. "It is truly an honor to fight alongside you all - I see that I am among skilled warriors indeed. I have little doubt that we are capable of finding the truth behind this crisis." He spares the carriage barely a glance, opting instead to examine the bodies of the zombies. "The carriage likely had little of import to begin with, and the claws of the twice-dead were likely unkind to it. Still, our former foes may prove more forthcoming." He peers at what is left of the zombies' clothes, attempting to discern where the corpses would have come from - unlucky caravan guards, isolated hunters, erstwhile bandits, or the like - in the hopes of getting a general idea of where the necromancer is operating.

At Lilyana's question, he glances over to where the half-elf stands by the statue. "The survivor said that the ice demon froze the Captain solid, yes? Like as not, that's him there." The horned hunter returns to examining the dead zombies. "We'll make funeral pyres for the dead once we're done here. It is right that warriors should meet their gods with the observance of the proper rituals."

"I can agree it was an honor, and you lot certainly are capable. Speaking of rituals, has anyone ever had to do a funeral pyre for a frozen solid captain like this? Is there some procdure? And it was a winter-touched fey, we're dealing with Irrisen, not the Abyss!"

The half-elf laughs a little before continuing, and saying jokingly, "Hopefully we DON'T have to deal with demons as well."

"Woo!" Noemy stabs the zombie she finished off and shatters it far more abruptly than she expects "That's fun. Weird, but fun." She scurries over to the frozen icy statue once she's done, walking around it to inspect it more carefully.

"Maybe if we melt him, he'll turn out to be okay. I've heard a story that goes that way, at least. We could use the wagon to build a campfire." She refrains from touching the frozen captain in case he'll shatter too, then sets to gathering the driest pieces of wood nearby. Even if a campfire doesn't do any good for the captain, it would be nice after the icy zombies.

"Well, that was easier than I thought it would be." Yorah relaxes a bit once the undead are dispatched. She looks around the scene as others start discussing pyres. "Uh - maybe put that fire on hold? Smoke is visible far and wide. Let's see if we can find anything useful first? Tracks or such?" she looks at the snow to find disturbances from entities previously present.

"You think so Yorah?" Noemy retrieves her weaving needle with a tug and stows her bladed needle. "If there's any ice faeries or ice zombies close by and they come to check the fire, that'll make things a lot easier for us, probably."

Ai was quite relieved to see the zombies go down as easily as they did and equally disturbed that they began to freeze solid. She took several minutes to gather her wits after the fright of the fight and was just back in touch with reality as they spoke of fires. "I think fire would be useful if we find a way to get some to use during a fight with these things. I think maybe I should start trying to learn how to call forth fire..." she looked at the frozen corpses, "...lots of fire..."

"Fire would definitely be useful," Lilyana says as she just embraces the cold, and paces around the frozen man.

The Aiuvarin turns to the Dromaar before saying, "Definitely easier than I thought it would be as well!"

Yorah looks around the group, thinking. "No, you are right. A small fire will help. But not the wagon, please. We need to search that thing."

Noemy waves her arm in agreement, then returns to scurrying around, grabbing broken bits of wood and piling them up near the icy statue in the slim chance he's just magically frozen and will revive upon the use of a little heat.
