Henrika Karthis |

Henrika looks startled by Juliana's introduction. "Magdh, the Eldest? I don't believe I've ever heard of a holy knight in service to one of the divine fey. Would you call yourself a Green Lady? In any case, welcome to our band."
When the arrow flies out and strikes Tychus, she raises her sword as if to deflect a blow and glares in the direction of the speaker, but does not continue moving forward. "We would prefer not to fight, if a conflict can be avoided," she says warily. "Will you treat with us? Show yourself, and we will speak with you."

Falchion Jack |

Jack frowns, not knowing anything about the fey or the divine. "A Green Lady, heh! Our group keeps getting greener," he laughs, referring to his skin's olive tone.
He steps up to stand beside Henrika, but with a quick glance at her implacable demeanor he also goes no further.

Tychus Marcaius |

Tychus stumbles backwards from the shot, chiding himself for missing such an obvious. He grabs the protruding fletching, ripping it from his armour with a grunt. He throws the snapped fragments to the ground and aims at the assailant, waiting for the order to fire.

Trevor Kastner |

"That WAS RUDE!" Trevor shouted, as he walked over to Tychus and cast a healing spell on the slayer.

Xallis Livara |

Xallis frowns as the cleric moves to heal his ally, though the spell goes off before he can say anything. "Careful. If she doesn't understand magic, even a simple healing spell may set her off."
"Pardon me, but that was my friend that you shot." Xallis calls out, hands raised in a gesture that's half peaceful and half out of frustration. "A little excessive, but we got your warning loud and clear. We would like to talk. From here, at a comfortable distance if that's alright with you."

Trevor Kastner |

"To my knowledge, no one has sent us", Trevor calls out, his hands initially up. "But others have taken notice of you. Some think you are a fey creature. I don't think you are, but my nature lore isn't very strong. Considering how Tychus is not full of arrows might means you likely have a good head on your shoulders. Luckily for you, Tychus's best friend is a cleric of Cayden Cailean."
Trevor slowly and deliberately unhooks his tankard from his belt and casts create water, filling his vessel with cold ale. Taking a sip, the caydenite offers, "Want one? Cayden has more than enough for fellow thirsty adventurers."
Diplomacy (charming): 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (11) + 21 = 32

Henrika Karthis |

Henrika narrows her eyes. "We have never met Jaliessa," she says, "But we followed her trail here from the manor house where several of her cohorts were turned to stone by a medusa. We defeated the creature, and discovered the lieutenant's mount, which missed its mistress. That is what brings us here. I take it from your tone that you and Jaliessa are not friends? Do you know where she is?" She hesitates, and then explains further: "We have been sent by the merchant council of Yanmass to discover what has happened to Jaliessa's cavalry unit. While it seems many of them were petrified, the bulk of these soldiers are still missing. If you can help us untangle this riddle, we will be grateful."

Some think you are a fey creature. I don't think you are, but my nature lore isn't very strong.
”Fey creature? What are you on about?”
Taking a sip, the caydenite offers, "Want one? Cayden has more than enough for fellow thirsty adventurers."
”Absolutely not!”
In response to Henrika, she says, ”The Council sent you? And you say you defeated a medusa at Orvestikar Manor? I thought it was a powerful spellcaster.”
The woman cautiously steps into the open. ”I’m Lieutenant Gallindra Jonrek. Commander Jaliessa Staubel leads the Taldan Cavalry in Yanmass. Or led, I should say. Jaliessa has taken the cavalry and defected. I didn’t know at the time, but she sent those soldiers who loyalty is unwavering to the ruins knowing it was a trap to dispose of us. I’ve been forced into hiding and feared she’d send others after me if she discovered I survived.”
”The bandits assaulting the caravans and the Taldan Cavalry are one in the same. I’ve discovered where they are encamped, but can I trust you?”

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23

Tychus Marcaius |

Tychus places a hand on his friend's shoulder. He winces slightly, his mind still fresh with the pain of his now cured injury. He addresses the cleric in a hushed tone:
"It will take more than a bolt to take me out. Let us at least see what we can get out of her."
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32

Henrika Karthis |

Henrika looks a glance at Trevor and Tychus, confirming that they are willing to negotiate (or at least partially mollified) before continuing. She answers Gallindra, "I assure you that you can trust us, but spies abound in this region. I do not trust that you would be safe if you returned with us to Yanmass, for there are others in town who I am certain are working against our efforts." She looks around the forest, her nose wrinkled. "Yet I am reluctant to leave you here, where you may be found by their forces who dog our steps. Perhaps you would be willing to disguise yourself before joining with us? It may be best not to reveal our hand to all until we have dealt with these mutinous soldiers that you describe. What do you say, my friends? Do you agree? And you, Lieutenant Jonrek?"

Xallis Livara |

Xallis sighs. "Would she promise not gift them with a new hole to breathe out of?"
"I've no love for traitors, and even less for those who would lead their allies to a serpent's den to meet their demise. If there is a defection within the military that's causing problems for the people, please help is in rooting it out before it can cause further harm."

GM Peachbottom |

Gallindra points at Trevor. ”Back off! I was defending myself. You would do the same.”
In response to Henrika and Xallis, ”If you freed the other officers at the manor, I have no right to hide out here. I will return to them. I won’t take up a disguise. If Jaliessa sends someone after me, they’ll get an arrow in the eye. And if you plan on dealing with that traitor, I have even less to worry about. Her and the rest of the cavalry are encamped in an abandoned caravanserai located a few miles outside of Yanmass called Tallgrasses. I’ll give you directions.”
”You didn’t happen to free my mount as well did you? I thought I heard her call outside the forest. If that was you, you have my thanks. And I apologize for shooting your friend. Besides information on the Taldan Cavalry, I have nothing else I can offer you. Hopefully, that will be enough.”
Those who did sense motive feel that she is being truthful.

Henrika Karthis |

Henrika gives Jonrek a crisp, military salute. "We are much obliged to you, lieutenant. We shall see about reuniting you with your elephant. One more thing: can you tell us why Jaliessa turned traitor? Had she always been disloyal, or did something happen to make her decide to betray you?"

GM Peachbottom |

Gallindra says, ”I’ll find my way back to the barracks if you need to call upon me again. Good luck.”
You make your way out of the forest and head to the southern gate. At the gate, you find a merchant to rent horses from. The merchant shares a bit of information about Tallgrasses before you depart.
He says, ” Tallgrasses is a large caravanserai about 15 miles east of Yanmass* on the Whistling Plains. Catering to Qadiran travelers coming from the east and merchants leaving Taldor from the south or west, Tallgrasses has always occupied a tense position between the two nations. The original owners of the caravanserai were the Douniette family, Taldan aristocrats able to trace their noble lineage back for several centuries. For decades, they operated Tallgrasses with keen diplomacy. In the end, though, the caravanserai was doomed not by politics or violence, but by weather: a particularly hot series of summers 20 years ago caused the caravanserai’s wells to dry up. The baron at that time seized the opportunity to drive out the “horselord sympathizers” by raising the price on exported water. The Douniettes had no choice but to close the caravanserai and move back to Yanmass. When the rains returned, the two primary legal claimants to Tallgrasses killed each other in a duel, leaving the caravanserai’s ownership unclear. The site has remained shuttered since then.”
(*The book says “15 miles west of Taldor” but I think that’s a mistake. East of Yanmass makes more sense.)
Tallgrasses is situated in a shallow valley between high, rolling hills covered in vegetation. But before you arrive, you have an encounter along the road.
(I’m going to say this is about 3-1/2 hours since your encounter on Hedge Hill. And the sun is setting, making the area dim light. [I’ll assume you all have a light source if you don’t have darkvision, but enemies further than 40 ft. away will have concealment.])

(Then Tychus, Jack, and Xallis/Navia can get a single surprise round action (standard or move). Since Navia is an extension of Xallis, I’ll let Xallis act in the surprise round too.)

Henrika: ▲False Life (14 hp, 3.5 hr)

Falchion Jack |

Can we assume that Henrika has re-cast dancing lights and message every seven minutes while she is traveling? Also, Henrika has implanted her Mesmeric Mirror trick in Jack today, but she has to be within 170 feet of him to trigger it as a free action.
Jack whispers to Henrika through the message spell, "There's two large groups of enemies ahead on either side of the road, about ten human-looking people and four big animals. I don't think they're elephants. They're not really hiding, but I don't think they're our friends. We're just outside of easy longbow range, which makes us all sitting ducks if we stay back here. If we abandon the horses and charge the foe, they might get only two or three shots in, and there's a chance the horses will stay put. I'll try to draw their fire while you get ready."
He shakes the reins and rides forward, and as he dismounts he calls out in his best drill sergeant voice, "All right, form up! Form up! Move! Where's your commanding officer? Inspec... SHUN!" He also narrows his eyes and activates his special martial trick style. (Standard, move, and swift actions)
Profession (soldier): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23
He slaps his horse on the flank with the flat of his blade to encourage it to run back towards the others, or at least to get out of the way of the inevitable combat. (Standard action, surprise round)

Henrika Karthis |

Henrika nods in response to Jack's whispered message, and relays it to the others. As he rides forward she slips off of her mount and silently (psychically) casts displacement on herself.

Henrika Karthis |

(By the way, the dancing lights are with Henrika, about 20 feet ahead of her, and not with Jack, so Jack is in dim light, right?)

Xallis Livara |

The idea of rushing into battle on the back of a steed briefly pases through Xallis' mind, but these beasts are resources to be spared for the ride back. Not spent in a fantastical idea of glory. And Navia simply prefers the sensation of her own two feet. Perhaps she could pester Xallis to turn her into a quadruped sometime...
Both the summoner and the eidolon dismount.

GM Peachbottom |

Can we assume that Henrika has re-cast dancing lights and message every seven minutes while she is traveling?
Dancing Lights only has a 1 minute duration. (Not 1 min/level). So that’d get exhausting casting every minute over the course of 3+ hours. But she can have it active at the beginning of combat.
and activates his special martial trick style.
What is this special martial trick? I tried looking on your character sheet but I wasn’t sure what you were referring to.
He slaps his horse on the flank with the flat of his blade to encourage it to run back towards the others, or at least to get out of the way of the inevitable combat.
That works. The horse runs in the direction away from the enemies.
They're not really hiding, but I don't think they're our friends.
They are hiding. I had to google search a map for this encounter, but this area is like a savanna with tall grass a few feet high. They are laying down or crouched in the grass with stealth. Well, not any longer because they are going to act, but they were. I’m not going to bother figuring out if the grass provides additional cover or not. Just assume once they come out of hiding that it does not.
I’m going to assume Trevor and Malphene want to dismount too. If Trevor wants to have cast a spell, let me know and I can always add it on.
The bandits see your group dismounting and casting spells and realize that they’ve been spotted. They rise out of the grass and holler loudly.

A rain of arrows flies from the group to your right but none hit their mark. The nearby horses rear up and whinny, spooked by the sudden attack.
Taldan Traitors #1-#5 target Tychus, Henrika, Icabhod, and Jack x2 and all attacks miss. They are using composite shortbows which have a range increment of 70 ft.

Then a terrifying dire lion, much larger and muscular than a standard beast charges out of the tall grass and pounces upon Henrika. It grabs Henrika around the neck with jaws as strong as an iron trap and rakes away all of her mirror images with its four claws.
Dire Lion #1 charges and pounces Henrika which lets it get a full attack (bite and 2 claws) plus rake (2 more claws). The bite hits and deals 11 damage and the lion successfully grapples Henrika. The next two claws, because they were attacks that missed by 5 or less each destroy one of her mirror images. The last two claws are also both misses.
Dire Lion #2 – Bite, charge vs. Jack’s AC 20: 1d20 + 12 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 12 + 2 = 20

A second lion charges at Jack. Mirror images spring into existence in his defense but the lion shreds them to bits and then badly tears up Jack with three more claw strikes.
Dire Lion #2 charges and pounces Jack. All five attacks are potential hits. The bite and 1 claw destroy Jack’s two mirror images and the remaining three claws hit Jack for a total of 34 damage. Because dire lion’s have low-light vision, it doubles the radius of the dancing lights spell for itself so it does not have a miss chance for dim-light where it is.
On the positive side, after a lion charges, it can’t rake again unless it can manage to charge again.

Henrika Karthis |

What is this special martial trick? I tried looking on your character sheet but I wasn’t sure what you were referring to.
Jack has a feat called Kitsune Style. Once activated with a swift action, it means he can perform a dirty trick at the end of a charge. Probably won't get used since the enemy came to him, though.
(I was kind of hoping those rocks on the map made it difficult terrain between Jack and the lion, but I guess not.) :)

Falchion Jack |

Jack attempts an all-out defense against the dire lion and the other foes behind him. He steps back towards his friends, raises his arms to shield his exposed face with his armor, and crouches slightly to give himself more maneuverability. "Yep, definitely not elephants!" he shouts. "And these soldiers have a really poor sense of discipline! Why, I'd wager they are all traitors!"
Total defense is a standard action and gives him a +4 dodge bonus to AC. The big cat should also give him cover against further arrows, and he is still technically in melee if the soldiers don't have Precise Shot.

Trevor quickly dismounts with the others.
The cleric ducks down and cast bless on the group.

Dame Malphane Trant |

Malphene secretly thanks Cayden that she and her betrothed didn't ride out from.
The lore warden ducks down as well and unsheathes her longsword.

GM Peachbottom |

Gave Jack 13 hp back. He’s at 28/49 hp.
Tychus fires two bolts at the dire lion grabbing Henrika. The first hits its flank and the second pierces its heart. It let’s out a pained whine and slumps to the ground. Henrika can breath a sigh of relief as 3,000 pounds of cat falls off of her.
Tychus hits dire lion #1 twice and crits once for a total of 60 damage and kills the lion. Since the lion died, the third attack can go to the second lion.
With one lion down, Tychus fires his last shot at the lion near Jack and manages to stick a bolt in its hide.
Tychus hits dire lion #2 for 15 damage. I took 1 damage off because I think the original had point-blank shot factored in.
Sorry, Jack. He’s the only one the lion can reach.

Another dire lion charges Jack. Even in his defensive stance, he can’t hold off the ferocious beast and he goes down under the lion’s claws.
Dire Lion #3 charges Jack. It’s bite misses then it hits with 3 claws for a total of 31 damage, which puts Jack at -3 hp. After Jack falls unconscious, the lion does not make its last claw attack.
The last lion charges in Icabhod’s direction but can’t quite reach him yet.

Icabhod, Julania, Henrika, and Xallis go.

Henrika Karthis |

I feel like I should wait until Xallis, Navia, Julania, Trevor, and Malphene take their extra pending actions, as they could have a dramatic impact on this combat.
Can I confirm that since she is no longer grappled and the lion is dead, Henrika can charge lion #2?

Julania Livara |

After seeing an ally fall in a bloody heap, Jilania looks back at her brother with an expression of steely determination. Then she inclines her head towards the front.
Julania is delaying her turn until after Xallis.
Lay on Hands: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 5) = 9
She will also try to get a solid look at the beasts to see what she can recall from her adventures.
Knowledge (nature): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12

Xallis Livara |

Seeing his sister look at him through the darkness, the summoner understands what has to be done. He rushes forward, letting Navia and Julania place hands on his shoulders. Then, he places two fingertips on his forehead and concentrates. In a sudden whoosh of magic, the three find themselves right in front of the lions!
Casting dimension door on the two allies he can get to in a single move action.
Navia shakes her head to shake off the minor disorientation before looking at the lions with a grin. "Ohhh, what are these? I like them! I want to cut them up and let Pupa see how they work!"
Navia's Claw (power attack): 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 9 + 1 = 25 damage: 1d4 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10

Henrika Karthis |

It must be annoying that I keep repeating this, but Xallis, you are aware that you had two other standard actions that you could have used before this one? (Saying "the two allies he can get to in a single move action" says to me that you aren't.) Round 0 everyone had a full turn, and it was a move action to dismount; Trevor, Malphene, Xallis, Navia, and Julania didn't use their Round 0 actions. Then Tychus, Jack, Xallis, and Navia had a single standard action as part of the surprise round. That's when Jack sent his horse back, but I'm not sure what everyone else did. It seems like most of us didn't do anything, or maybe that's when Xallis and Navia dismounted?
GM, am I wrong about this? I wonder if folks aren't sure if this is so, and are honorably playing as if the turns are lost because they were skipped or didn't happen. But eight unused standard actions at the beginning of a difficult fight are tactically important enough that I feel like I shouldn't just shut up about it. That's a lot of buff spells we could have cast, or even just moving closer to the battle!
Henrika charges ahead, attacking the injured dire lion and placing herself next to Jack to try and get some of the predatory animals off him. The soft glow of the dancing lights follows her.
I would have her use her hypnotic stare on the lion, but she doesn't have a swift action because she used her immediate last round.
Charge attack (Koriana's blade), bless, charge, Power Attack: 1d20 + 12 + 1 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 12 + 1 + 2 - 2 = 14
Damage (magic, slashing), Power Attack: 1d8 + 7 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 7 + 6 = 16
Sigh. Guess I should use her last hero point to reroll that attack.
Reroll charge attack (Koriana's blade), bless, charge, Power Attack: 1d20 + 12 + 1 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 12 + 1 + 2 - 2 = 24
If one of the dire lions attacks her next turn, I think it might be fun to try Shadow Splinter instead of Mesmeric Mirror for her Reflexive Trick if the conditions are right. This would make one of the lions think that the other one had attacked it, which could be useful.

Trevor Kastner |

Round 1
Both the cleric and the lore warden move up to shoulder Ichabod as the raging dire lion comes closer.

Round 1
The lion turns to Henrika as she charges forward. The large animal can’t move out of the way and Henrika carves a gash into it.
Henrika hits dire lion #2 for 16 damage.
Xallis teleports his allies forward and Navia scratches the surprised lion again.
Navia hits dire lion #2 for 10 damage.
Julania heals Jack for 9 hp putting him back up to positive 6 hp.
Knowledge (nature): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
A dire lion’s type is animal. “Dire lions, known locally as spotted lions or cave lions, are immense predators. Although they are merely animals, these large creatures seem to take an almost sadistic glee in playing with and tormenting their prey before eventually devouring it.” You’ve seen basically all a dire lion can do already. It has a bite and two claw attacks. If it charges, it can make a full attack with a pounce ability and can also rake with its two back claws during a pounce. If it hits with its bite, it can attempt to grab. It has low-light vision and scent, and a bonus to stealth in undergrowth.
At the end of the round, the horses safely flee away from the enemies down the road.
They won’t go too far. You’ll be able to retrieve them.
Round 2
The traitors don’t have precise shot so each get a -4 penalty shooting those next to a lion. Noting here rather than writing out multiple times.

Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
The archers remain in place in the distance and fire a second volley. Navia, Henrika, and Julania duck out of the way. But Xallis without his magical protections up, takes two arrows to the chest.
Taldan Traitors #1, 4, 5 miss Navia, Henrika, and Juliana. Taldan Traitors #2, 3 hit Xallis twice for a total of 15 damage.
I was going to say Tychus’ could use the reaction with Dignity’s Barb to block one of those but I looked it up and it only works within 30 ft and Tychus is too far back. Oh well.

Damage: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Dire Lion #3 Will save vs. Shadow Splinter DC 16: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
The injured lion lunges at Henrika and once again she finds herself clamped in a lion’s jaws. With her mesmerist trick shadow splinter an illusory lion also bites at the adjacent lion (#3) who roars in surprise and turns angrily at the attacker. Henrika is then violently shaken while the beast claws at Navia while maintaining its hold.
Dire Lion #2 gets a critical hit on Henrika for 26 damage, which is reduced to 20 damage from shadow splinter and 6 damage is dealt to dire lion #3. Henrika is also grappled. Navia gets hit with 2 claws for a total of 23 damage.

Falchion Jack |

Jack comes to lying on the ground between two lions, and he blinks several times to register where he is and what is happening. He notes Julania's hand recede from him, and guesses that she has healed him. He briefly considers playing dead, as he is only barely conscious, but he is heartened by all the figures around him and decides that he can at least try to support their fight. He stabs upward at the underbelly of the lion grappling Henrika with his falchion.

Tychus Marcaius |

Tychus hits dire lion #2 for 15 damage. I took 1 damage off because I think the original had point-blank shot factored in.
That is correct :)
With the relentless onslaught of feline foes, Tychus huffs as he furiously reloads his crossbow. With Henrika once again in the jaws of danger, he takes aim at the Lion and hopes to Abadar he can free her once again.

Taldan Traitor #6 and #9 are blinded. #7 and #8 passed the save.
Navia grits her teeth at the sight of Xallis having arrows embedded in him and decides to rush towards the remaining soliders.

Julania smacks the lion hard upside the head but it only makes the lion angrier and it clamps down harder.

Taldan Traitors #2 and #3 miss. Taldan Traitor #4 hits Navia with a sneak attack for 15 damage. They have the feat Shadow Strike which let’s them sneak attack in dim light and in addition, they have an ability called Brutal Beating where they can forgo 1d6 of sneak attack damage to cause the sickened condition for 1 round.
