Karsh'e turns around to put his back against the railing. His hand drops to the handle of the whip wound around his stomach just above his belt.

As everyone is posturing Lia puts the journal inside her cloak and steps back from the body, hoping the tense situation will help hide the action...

The whip is treated as a melee weapon with 15-foot reach, though you don’t threaten the area into which you can make an attack. In addition, unlike most other weapons with reach, you can use it against foes anywhere within your reach (including adjacent foes).

Karsh'e walks to the far end of the bridge to make sure there are no more foes in hiding. Then he returns to the party, and drifts closer to the elf, Lia.

You and Beren find that the Warforged was carrying one battleaxe, sling with 15 bullets, traveling cloak, and a backpack. The goblins had short swords and leather armor.
Kaine looks about for any telling clues, but seeing nothing peculiar (besides the blank journal), he looks up at the group.
"A lot of effort for a blank journal, don't you think? And she was quite glib of both her intentions and outlook. Such confidence is telling in itself." He quirks an eyebrow at the rest.
"Her sneers seem to confirm her claim that she is a follower of the Lord of Blades. Now what would they want with this old man? Perhaps we should focus on identifying him. I also think that our possession of that journal, if that possession becomes known, will make us some powerful enemies."
Lia takes a close look at the journal to see if it has a hidden catch or pocket or similar.
"Perhaps there is a magical or naturally hidden message in it. It is apparently important enough to kill for. "
Usgar thinks for a moment. But thinking is quite hard.
"If we cannot figure out how to read the message, we will need to be careful who we consult." he muses, "With the motif on the cover, it could be house Cannith. Which means it could be concealed magically or alchemically."
Lia looks up at Escher and a second later smiles.
"Ah, I have access to people the rest of you do not who are less inclined to worry about local politics. We can find a quiet place to look at this ourselves and if we cannot figure it out, I can query one or two of my people.... But for now, do we report this incident or would that be more trouble?"
Usgar grunts.
“ I do not really care much about authorities! If this house, whatever knows more than maybe we can go there and actually get some gold for this book!? But maybe people will think that we actually killed this person so maybe the guards are the right place after all?!“ he says scratching his head.
Two males and a female, wearing the green-and-black studded leather of Sharn’s City Watch, emerge from the rain-drenched night. The leader, a powerfully built bald dwarf with a close-cropped beard, steps forward, leveling his crossbow in your direction. The small ball of arcane light, hovering just above and behind his left shoulder, illuminates the area. To each side, a human male and female stand with halberds at the ready.
“Olladra’s bloody nose!” the dwarf curses. “By order of the Watch, drop your weapons and explain yourselves!"
