Toko considers letting the tiefling expire naturally, but has second thoughts.
I'm stabilizing him. We can interrogate him, turn him into local authorities or let him go, but letting him die like this doesn't feel right.

Roran Alderfell |
Roran searches through the gear left by the foes. "If no one objects, I'd like to claim these masterwork arrows, a thunderstone, and I can hold onto the gold for the group until such a time that it is needed. I concur with our two most-wounded taking a potion each. That still leaves two tanglefoot bags, a thunderstone, plus weapons and armor. But we must hurry."
Roran gathers what he's claimed and moves for the cave.
Roran Alderfell |
Roran dashes for the cave, but attempts to lighten his steps as he approaches. He peers inside, unsure of how far in he will be able to see, with an arrow notched in his bow.

Grimwald Farmer |
Concerned about the conflict coming, Grim decides to wait on using the resources they may need in the very near future.
However, moving forward, he touches Xildania's blade, infusing it with good energy for the next minute.
Blessing of Good, one minute duration, additional 1d6 good damage
He then follows Roran into the cave.
GM Nowruz |
You all move to the cave entrance.
This rock face towers nearly 30 feet and is punctuated in the middle with the dark opening of a cave mouth.
As you enter, the dank scent of moss hangs heavy in the air as the gloom in the cave thickens. Some daylight filters in to the mouth of the cave (the entryway is in low-light), but the caverns receding deeper in on either side are completely dark.
How do you want to deal with light, and what is your marching order/algorithm as you proceed into this cave?
---
These cramped corridors smell like fungus and rot.
You can hear a violent thudding sound as well as muffled roaring coming from deeper within the cave.
Ridges on the map represent sloping passages downward. Squares that are sloped are difficult terrain. Are you taking your time and exploring the area, or moving quickly to find the creature?
Xildina |
Xildina follows the party after thanking them for the healing deciding to drink an additional potion just to make 100% sure they are prepared for what comes next.
Potion of Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Perception: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19
Upon listening carefully, for once, Xildina looks to the others with worry, quietly readying their dueling sword.
"We should proceed carefully."
Roran Alderfell |
Roran, not wanting to take a hand away from his bow, brings himself directly behind Sirani, in order to see with Sirani's lamp. He peers into the cave.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Roran whispers to the others, "Do you hear that? Some sort of... thudding and... is that roaring I hear? It's coming from deeper inside. We should proceed, but with caution. But... not too much caution. There was that scream earlier. Keep your eyes peeled, I mean."
For marching order, this would put Roran directly behind Sirani, but is otherwise fine with being toward the front.
Grimwald Farmer |
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
"That sounds ominous, everyone be careful and on guard."
A little slower than Sirani, Grimwald casts light on Xildania's gauntlet to help light the way. He then spends his movements alternating blessings on each of the companions.
Guidance lasts for one minute, six seconds to cast, gives +1 to attack roll, saving throw or skill check
GM Nowruz |
After a minute of moving through the caverns and exploring, you hear the loud *snap* of a chain breaking, followed by a bellow of triumph and loud, thudding footsteps.
Suddenly, a large, two-headed beast comes into view, wielding a nasty-looking flail in one hand and holding the dead, crushed body of an aged woman in the other hand.
The two-headed giant is wearing a large pendant that you clearly recognize as the pendant that was granted by the dragon to the town of Highdelve.
But you also see that strange cords are attached to the amulet and it is blood-covered.
+++++++++
All over the Ettin’s body strange bloody runes are carved into its skin.
These are diabolic runes which could be used to protect giants from draconic beings with the right focus. And the amulet could serve as exactly that focus. Essentially, you assume that Aureliax would not have been able to protect the town as it would not have been able to harm this Ettin.
Please note that it is dark in here. I know you have a light source but those without low-light vision have problems due to concealment 20% at range because of dim light.
This is the an weakened Ettin! A large, two-headed humanoid (giant), this one seems to be in a weakened state. For every 5 by which you beat the DC you may ask a question about it.

All over the Ettin’s body strange bloody runes are carved into its skin and Roran’s arrow hits for another bloody scratch!
The giant roars angrily and drops the body of the broken woman that was in his hand.
“You are dead already! I’ll eat you!!!“

Oh man, these dice rolls are cruel. I’m sorry!! :-( Please everyone don’t forget that ranged attacks provoke from the Ettin within 10 ft (his reach). In case you don’t have precise shot you suffer -4 to hit for shooting into melee. Also note that soft cover can give AC bonus in case an ally is between you and the Ettin when making ranged attacks.

Grimwald recognizes the problem facing them. This thing can beat his comrades, nay his friends... into oblivion, chasing them around the cave. While Xildina was the most qualified to face the beast in hand to hand combat, she fell in the beasts lumbering initial assault.
I need to buy them time! Sirani and Roran are lethal if they just have the time they need!
Instead of fleeing, Grim tosses his longbow to the side, drawing his hand ax and readying his buckler.
