The Cow hammer boys hadn't told Vancakerkin about their sideline business. The Cow Hammer Boys hire themselves out for petty thuggery—they ask no questions of those who hire them, only demanding a payment of 50gp per person to be beaten. Although the guards never openly admit that those they beat are almost always killed, they certainly imply that fact by offering guarantees that after they visit the mark, their client need never worry about the victim again. What they never allude to at all is how they dispose of the bodies.

It turns out that the Cow hammer boys didn't keep records. They simply accepted gold from anyone to take care of their clients enemies. No way of really tracking who hired them, or who went missing with Korvosa the way it currently is.

A search of the building turns up the Cow hammer boys stash hidden under a water trough in B5, the holding pen. You also make a disturbing discovery in B4, the killing floor. In the sewer tunnel below the grating you find a severed human finger still wearing an expensive ring.

Cressida Croft is understandably outraged by your report. Murder and cannibalism both carry the death penalty which she will apply to Vancaskerin and the Cow hammer boys.

After of course she has a long, pointed conversation with Verick Vancaskerkin about why he thought up his foolish idea in the first place. She thinks that whoever was supplying him with the cattle used to feed the populace might be behind that plan to disrupt the guard.

While you were dealing with these scum I had a clerk dig up the plans for the building being used for the Menagerie." She tell you.

Nethen takes a grim satisfaction in handing over Vancaskerkin and his degenerates to Field Marshal Croft. He takes a moment of silence to pray to Calistria that the men will get the punishment they deserve for their crimes.

"We should move on the Menagerie as quickly as possible. We don't want word getting out of our plans," Nethen suggests.

Vedika grumbles something about following a trail of breadcrumbs that may or may not lead to her sister, but goes along with the plan for now because they need the co-operation of the guard. She is, at least, thankful for Kayleigh's promise of help.

"Sounds smart," she says in response to Nethen's comment. "How do you want to tackle this one? I guess we should case the joint first and then figure out our best intrusion plans."

"Probably the best way to go. Better to have an idea of their defenses and numbers before just storming in, as much as I'd like to just kick in the door." Ariadne replies.

Having filled Kayleigh in on the situation, the battlemage is pleased that her friend chooses to join them in dealing with the bastards that would take and sell children.

Anybody mind if I... ahhh... keep this?" Iorghil asks, flipping the mithril ring over in his hand. He tries it on, and finds it fits well. "It's such a good fit!" he exclaims, holding his hand out to show it off.

Ghil's curse requires him to wear 100gp/level of fancy jewelry, this will do him for this level up along with the next four. Obviously this would be his whole share; happy to offset it against future loot if it's too much for a share right now. Otherwise, he's going to have to go shopping or he'll be sickened.

I think it's a perfect in-game opportunity to fulfill a mechanical requirement.

Kayleigh remains absolutely silent in the field marshal's office; either she's painfully shy or somewhat intimidated by the no-nonsense government official. Once back on the city streets, she opens up some.

"I'm a healer, in the truest sense of the word," she tells the others. "In my neighborhood in Old Korvosa, I serve as a physician, nurse, water-bringer, midwife, and even--on rare occasions--as a veterinarian. I even have a veterinarian's kit back in my apartment. So maybe I could offer my services at this menagerie and I could scope out the place a bit in advance."

Fidgeting a bit, the young lady admits, "I'm not the best liar...er, bluffer, though...."

"I've already got a silver weapon," Kayleigh announces, showing the others her unusually-shaped morningstar, "so someone else should claim the silver dagger. I've heard that gangs of rogue imps roam the city, though they're often invisible, so maybe...they really do exist...or perhaps they're just a rumor or old wives' tale...."

The priestess falls silent and blushes a bit. I hope they don't think that I also believe in Krampus or the Springtime Pooka!

"As for the rest of that treasure... I do like a good dagger. I'm not certain, but I suspect that Pharasma is somehow behind all this weird s@$! that happens around me." He catches eyes with the lightly glowing petromin scampering around his shoulders. "Yes; I'm talking about you! Very much you! You are one of the weirdest things to happen to me yet!" He giggles with his new pet and continues.

"Anyway, Pharasma's really into daggers; I kinda want to collect all of them that we find." He takes out the intricate one with the key-shaped handle they found earlier. "Like this! This one's a beaut! But that silver one could actually prove handy; if we ever find a door or chest this thing will open, I'll be as surprised as anybody."

Hey, the curse is covetous, wanting all the things is 100% in character, lol

Also, hope he's not too light of a character for this grim storyline. I can adjust if he's breaking the mood.

"Then it's yours," Nethen says with a smile, surprised at how pleased Ghil seems with a simple silvered knife.

"Scouting the place seems like the best plan," he states, turning back to Ariadne and Vedika. "There's probably all sorts of defences and guards waiting for intruders in a place like that, we don't want to go in blind and get our arses kicked."

"Looks like there's only one, well-guarded, way in," Nethen says after their initial scout around the Menagerie. "I'd be very surprised if that's true though, a dodgy place like this must have a back door somewhere. If we try to walk in the front gate I doubt we'll get very far."

He thinks for a second before making a suggestion. "What if we came over the roof? Get some rope, some climbing gear, and come down from above?"

GM - are there any taller buildings/structures around from which we could look down on the Menagerie to see if there are any windows or doors in from the roof?

"Given that they're also into a lot of evil activity, it's likely to have a number of secret ways to slip out as well." Ariadne adds.

While not outright saying "no" to Nethen's plan, Kayleigh points out that--especially when wearing her armor--she's not very good at climbing or sneaking. The new girl also reveals that she's got some of the characteristics that are often a bane to successful adventurers: a conscience and a sense of honor and fair play.

"We should probably try to take the guards alive if we have to battle them," the blonde teen suggests. "Vancaskerkin was seemingly unaware of the crimes going on in the butcher shop, hard as that may be to believe. It's much more likely--though not certain--that hired guards wouldn't necessarily be privy to the child trafficking we know is happening here along with the more legitimate business."

Unfortunately, the priestess admits she'd not well-prepared for taking prisoners, though she could always stabilize or heal unconscious guards before they expire.

"Doing a little research is always a good idea," Ghil notes; he reaches out to his own network in town to see what he can learn about the place.

After sharing what he learns, Ghil joins Kayleigh's hesitation towards a rooftop assault. "Yeah, I'm not much of a climber myself," he can't hide a nervous glance at the finery he's dressed in. "But finding a back door and any secret exits could be key. It's definitely helped our last two operations. Let's say that I don't go in charms a-blazing this time, though...." he adds, sheepishly.

The area around the menagerie has been kept clear, leaving the building standing alone with no others pressing against on any side. Talking to the East shore locals also brings no result. The workers at the menagerie keep to themselves, are very tight-lipped and don't drink in the local taverns.

Covered wagons show up to deliver supplies or new beasts for sale. Guests show up to peruse the selection which are then delivered to their mansions also by covered wagons.

Crossing the bridge to East shore you can see a number of large, barred sewer outlets draining into the Jeggare river and you can also remember that keeping the sewers clean is usually left to the many Otyugh's that live there.

Kayleigh asks Vedika for a detailed description of her younger sister. Not sure she fits the bill as 'hired muscle' and blushing at the thought of acting as Ghil's paramour, Kayleigh suggests sticking close to the truth: She'll pose as a sort of veterinary expert who'll check on potential purchases to make sure they're in good health.

She's voting for the 'potential buyer' ruse to gain access to the compound.

Just before they arrive at the Menagerie, Ariadne takes a moment to prepare, tracing a small square of steel that looks to be cut from an actual shield through an arcane pass, until it is suddenly consumed by the magic emanating from her hand, and spreading to wrap her body in invisible layers of solid force.

I'm starting to think trying to find our way in through the sewers might be a better play if something nefarious is going on inside right now.

Assuming the party (eventually) moves out of earshot of the guards, Kayleigh reports that she thinks the guards were lying about the reason the Menagerie was closed. She crinkles her nose a bit but says she's willing to try the sewers to find a secret way into the compound.

entering the sewers isn't as easy as it seems. The outlet pipes are all barred to prevent the inhabitants getting out. Eventually you find a manhole cover to the south of the Menagerie.

You slip in and trudge northwards, holding your noses and your breakfasts.

Kayleigh casts a light spell when the party enters the sewers (either on her own morningstar or a weapon of someone in the front). When the group hits the ladder, she takes a moment to grant Milani's blessing (a guidance spell) on whoever goes up the ladder first.
