Maggie looks confused and hurt that Torchie 1 has attacked her for no reason.
"My old friend! Is that you? Don’t you tell me you don’t remember me, because I sure as heckfire remember you! Stop attacking us and we can sort this whole thing out. Am I right or am I right or am I right?"
Maggie casts Charm on Torchie 1 and then casts Shield.

You make quick work of the remaining two devil-worshipers. You can interrogate one of them who's left alive, but he doesn't;t know much. Boss paid the city guards to avoid this area, an' told us to not let anyone inside — no matter what.
He shrugs when you ask more. Don't know. Dat's above my pay grade.
✥ ✥ ✥
As you heal up and interrogate this pathetic guard, you hear shouts and chittering outside the gate.
A tiefling with spikes sticking out of his leather armor crashes through the front gates. Beyond is a large contingent of imps, zebubs, babaus, armed mercenaries, and more. They are led by a giant spider-devil whose iron helmet spews hellfire like an engine. This small army was clearly chasing the tiefling, and clatters to a halt just beyond the Delvehaven walls.
“Nine Hells, I thought I’d lost them!” The tiefling slams the gates closed. The doors both fall off their hinges, clattering to the ground. "… Huh." There is a moment of silence as tiefling and devil-army assess one another. An instant later, the air seethes with projectiles and rays of fire; the tiefling catches an arrow and snaps it before ducking and rolls rolling out of the way, miraculously avoiding death. He leaps to his feet and makes a fist, then sticks out his index and pinky fingers and brings his hand to his throat. It's clearly some kind of vulgar gesture. It's rewarded with another salvo of projectiles.
The devil-giant rumbles, YOU ARE SURROUNDED.
More arrows fly! The tiefling shouts: HA! You think so!? I got you right where I want you, you bastards! He's forced to duck as even more arrows pincushion the ground.
He glances back at you and chuckles. You haven't tried to kill me yet… I hope this is some good news because — he catches another arrow just before it goes through his eye— I could use some right about now.

Pugsley 'Ruff-ian' Higmor III
|
Pugsley looks back and forth between the tiefling and the small platoon of devils at his heals. "Shut the doors before I change my mind." Pugsley slams the doors shut certainly wanting to kill any man who brought this many devils to him. He turns to the tiefling in anger. "Explain this and quickly or I shih tzu not you will be as dead as William over there."
William hovers in the air with a look of pure mellon-Collie as he waves.
Flint Thunderstriker
|
"OI! Ye greedy tiefling! YOU SHARE!" Flint rushes over to help. The clear smile splits his beard.
Morgan Titchwillow
|
Morgan scowls as Flint rushes forward to fight the devilish menagerie with the stranger. "You want good news? I don't know that we can give you any without knowing just who you are or what you care about."
The necromancer nonetheless looks ready to release more magic.
| GM Doug H |
Look — I think we're here to rescue the same person, my best friend —
He notices at the dead guards. He watches Flint recklessly rush forward to fight the devils and grins. — Yeah. You must be the Pathfinders. Nobody else but me is stupid enough to be here AND ask for more. What in the Nine Hells took you so long!?
Pugsley, Maggie, and Alonzo see him flash some complex pathfinder signs. Venture-captin. Kidnapped. Inside.
Benedet mentioned you'd be coming in hot. This motley crew — he ducks — were waiting to ambush you. I led them on a merry chase — he catches another arrow - or, thought I did.
He yanks Flint down, saving the champion from being impaled on a javelin. Well?
I can keep these You gonna go save Jeggare or what? I can keep these fools occupied. He lobs something over the wall; there's a flash, a boom, and screaming.
Haggra the Hobgoblin
|
Haggra replies "Yes, we are Pathfinders, and we are here to safe Count Varian Jeggare.
"What are your orders, Sir?"
| GM Doug H |
Call me Radovan. He flashes a big smile.
I don't do orders. Not my style, buddy. But if you can get in there and save the Count, I'll hold these devils back to buy us time.
Alonzo Tamarisk
|
Alonzo chuckles aloud. Not sure our Champion will willingly let you fight fiends on your own, he says, but something tells me he'll not have a choice. We have our orders, after all. He leans to the side as a volley of arrows narrowly misses, then grabs Flint's arm. Another time, Highlander!
Flint Thunderstriker
|
"Aye. Aye. Me grandpappy once said that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country, he won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country!.... errrr something like that."
Flint nods solemnly, "Aye, we'll get him or I'll die trying." There isn't a single mote of doubt in the dwarf's promise.
Haggra the Hobgoblin
|
"Yes, sir, Radovan, sir!" retorts Haggra, only happy to have been given what sound like orders. "We will volunteer go get in there and save the Count.
"Do you need anything else from us before we head in? Some healing, equipment, or anything else?"
Are we all healed up?
| GM Doug H |
You are all healed. There was a decent 20-30 min narrative time before the enemies got here; you interviewed one of the torchbearers and healed.
"Aye. Aye. Me grandpappy once said that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country, he won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country!.... errrr something like that."
Radovan flexes his arms. Yeah. Sounds about right. He shrugs. A whole lot of them are about to die. Maybe me too, but I'll make 'em hurt first. Those elbow-spikes are sharp.
""Do you need anything else from us before we head in? Some healing, equipment, or anything else?"
Naw, I don't need anyting except my best friend back. You do that, and we're good.
Flint nods solemnly, "Aye, we'll get him or I'll die trying." There isn't a single mote of doubt in the dwarf's promise.
Radovan nods back. Go get him.
You open the old doors to Delvehaven, briefly noting that they are beautiful and have an ancient motto inscribed upon them: “To liberate the Past for the knowledge of Today; to live the maxim that fortune is earned by the bold; to prove there are no boundaries.”
Just before you close and bar the doors, somewhere outside the walls a wolfhound howls…
| GM Doug H |
Inside, it's surprisingly quiet. The walls are thick and the doors are quite heavy; all the windows are boarded up. You're in a moldy-smelling vestibule that has motes of dust drifting in the air. One of the wooden stairs curling around the room has a section that has collapsed into a pile of rubble. Cushioned chairs line the east and west walls, all facing an empty display platform in the center. Defaced paintings, each six feet tall, hang on the walls, though one of lays on the floor. Dust covers most of the surfaces, showing footprints around the room.
The painting on the floor depicts two hunters overlooking a slain horned beast but recently someone has kicked through the middle before discarding it on the floor. Several backpacks are set on top of the cushioned chairs, and one has a bronze plaque sticking out of it. The plaque reads: “Triceratops slain by Donatalus Bisby–4599 ar.”
Pugsley and Haggra note that the other stairway will collapse if you step foot on it.
Inside the backpacks you find a silversheen and a lesser healing potion. Added to Loot slide.
Alonzo, tracking, notices footprints going further in.
Slide 1 is updated with an overview map of the estate with a token on it denoting the party, and footprints marked for as long as you track them.
Morgan Titchwillow
|
"If time is of the essence, let's focus on the tracks. Alonzo, if you can keep on the trail then the rest of us will look out for danger," Morgan says, urging the group on.
Unless we spot something I think we're good to keep moving. Maybe pause at any doors long enough to find traps and listen for noise beyond.
