I'm sorry for being pokey, it turns out that it's tough having Gen Con and Gameday at the same time!
I should have warned that it would impact my posting frequency. Only signed up for the specials and one other game, but that takes some time anyway.
The PF2 special was nice, I’m eager to play the Starfinder part tonigh.
Otherwise, I’m fine with going for Down to the Wire.
GM Kate |
Down to the Wire it is!
I hope you enjoyed the linked specials, I know I sure did!
GM Kate |
Ha ha, I'm glad some of you were also doing Gen Con and don't just think I'm a slacker!
By the way, we have another aid token!
GM Kate |
I'm having difficulty engaging in all the role play while keeping up with the pace of the special, but I want you to know that I'm enjoying it a ton!
This is our first combat, since you were all so skilled before!
I use block initiative for PBP, where everyone who is up (currently bolded) should go ahead and post your actions. If you would wait for someone else before you go or want to make sure you go before someone else, just include that in your post. Something like "I move up the stairs and fire at Blue, waiting for the Envoy's Get 'Em first".
I sometimes delay an opponent or two to keep players in as few blocks as possible. I will never delay a PC for this purpose.
Denanne doesn't really have stats to participate in the encounter, but I'll have her move at the end of the round if you want her to do something or go somewhere.
And don't forget you all have an aid token!
Colthan Becknar |
The flashlight was actually to help civilians not get crushed. Your light might help with that if any remain. Colthan has Darkvision.
Does Starfinder have a way to recognize classes or abilities?
Reading the ability the extra damage is dealt on a successful trick roll but it could be relevant to know we cant flatfoot them if they are level 7+.
GM Kate |
I have no idea if there's a way for your character to know, but to make things run smoother for you the player, I have no problem with telling you that they are indeed CR 7.
Colthan Becknar |
I'm pretty sure it isn't hidden. Stealth is the skill it is using for Trick Attack but it isn't hiding.
GM Kate |
You still have an aid token, which should be used or boosted!
Colthan provided a suggested list of who is in which starship role here, which seems like a good place to start! I also need you to decide whether you are taking the Drake or the Pegasus.
Umbro-187 |
I vote for the Drake.
Is there a reason why we didn't get to finish our combat encounter?
Colthan Becknar |
Ship combat tends to take a long time.
Umbro-187 took Defender of the Fleet but I'm not sure which bonus he picked.
Sister-Maggie didn't pick boons?
Colthan took extra node.
The Tam took Automated Defenses
Drake vs Pegasus is a often debated.
Drake is slower, less maneuverable, but much better weapons.
A good pilot can increase the maneuverability if needed,
Personally I'm in favor of Drake and using Defender of the Fleet to upgrade the weapons. Rerolling 1s on high damage weapons can really add up. And we want the combat to be over asap.
Kal Maar |
I vote for the Drake.
Is there a reason why we didn't get to finish our combat encounter?
Part 3 started. Typically when that happens in specials, everyone immediately moves on to the next encounter, regardless of what you were doing.
GM Kate |
Yup, what Kal said! Don't worry, there are more combat encounters to come!
I see two votes for the Drake, and that's usually the most popular choice, so I'll assume you're going Drake.
Colthan Becknar |
On reflection it is based on tier. At lower tiers there is a divide with Drake winning out at higher tier. And the Azata being Meme tier.
GM Kate |
I have placed the ship's statistics on slide 8, along with my understanding of your current starship roles!
Colthan Becknar |

Next round Colthan will switch to Gunner unless our ship takes a lot of damage.
Umbro-187 |
Finest Engines for Umbro-187's Defender of the Fleet boon.
Umbro-187 |
I suggest we broadside with our port arc and turret weapons. Do we have a science officer that can do a lock on action? The gunner should also use all the ship's bonuses for all three attacks.
Also, do we have a list of all the bonuses we got from our actions at the beginning of this scenario? We might need to use them.
Umbro-187 |
I don't have time right now, but can someone check for me if the engine upgrade from Defender of the Fleet affects our turning radius.
GM Kate |
I suggest we broadside with our port arc and turret weapons. Do we have a science officer that can do a lock on action? The gunner should also use all the ship's bonuses for all three attacks.

I added a list to Slide 12. Your science officer scanned the drones this round.
Sister-Maggie |
I haven't been a gunner in well over a year so let me make sure I have everything correct before I actually roll. It is my understanding that I'll be rolling piloting (6) + Dex (3) + 2 for the computer for a total of +11? Also it looks like I should fire the Heavy Antimatter Missile Launcher in the turret?
Colthan Becknar |
+2 from the node technically. There is a separate bonus to Computer checks for the science officer. But otherwise correct on the bonus. As for the missiles we have 5? I think. Possibly we should save them for higher bonus gunners.
Umbro-187 |
Do we have any higher bonus gunners other than, Umbro-187?
I suggest we fire as many weapons as possible every round with either our best gunner doing a broadside and taking the ship's bonuses to negate or boost their rolls. The science officer can also do a lock on action to negate the -2 penalty.
If we are going three gunners that is fine also, but let's fire our best weapons every round. The antimatter missile only has a speed of 8 hexes, so when we are up close to them let's use it, but when we are more than 8 hexes away I suggest we don't. Even if we run out of missiles we still have the persistent particle beam.

There’s only 5 missiles. They only have a speed of 8, so aiming them at enemies in that range is better. Using the best modifier when shooting them, so avoiding having any penalty, would be preferable.
The Tam to hit bonus for gunnery is +7. far from the +14 of Umbro, and less than the +9 of Sister Maggie.
If you still have fame, you can use it. You have until December 31st 2021 to use it, after that it goes away.
https://organizedplayfoundation.org/Lorespire/sfsguide._.Factions-and-Reput ation#Basic_Purchasing_Plan list Restoration costing 2 Fame.
Colthan Becknar |
Umbro has 8 BAB +5 from dex so +13 then +2 from the node.
Colthan had 8 ranks in Pilot +6 Dex for +14 then +2 from his own node.
Also Umbro is +18 on piloting while Colthan is +20.
So fairly close on both. If we don't need Engineering for repair but are close enough to fire the missiles then one of us can pilot and the other can fire.
GM Kate |
Yup, you can still use your fame! You had days before this starship combat, so there was lots of time.
If people swap roles, please change the role assignments on Slide 8 so I know who to prompt when.
Also, you still have an aid token!
GM Kate |
For my sake, would anything have changed Maggie's 1s on the damage roll? I know there wasn't an engineer last round, but was there a slotted boon?
Umbro-187 |
Can we have Umbro-187 pilot this round and Colthan pilot next round so we can take advantage of his higher piloting bonus for initiative?
I suggest we let Colthan take all the bonuses and do a broadside action this round and all the other PC's switch to other roles and try to aid his gunnery.
If we don't take out purple with the broadside and we lose initiative next round I suggest we go for a fly by on purple and broadside again and that should more than likely destroy that drone.
Umbro-187, actually has a +14 in gunnery, but since Colthan has his own node he can use the other three bonuses and broadside all four of our forward arc and turret guns without the penalty.
Colthan Becknar |
This round Colthan scanned and Umbro piloted.
I can either Pilot next round or do gunnery next round. The node bonuses don't stack by the way.
The ship has
+2 to computers Only helps the Science Officer
+2 to 3 different checks Can help 3 different PCs.
Since Colthan has his own node he can add +2 to his check without using one of the 3 +2 bonuses.
I'm fine with whatever role you want but even Colthan can't be in 2 places at once. Yet.
Umbro-187 |
We are in round 2 now, so you can switch to gunner. No one, but Umbro-187 has acted yet. In round 3 you switch to pilot and roll initiative.
If you broadside you can take all three bonuses and apply them, one each, to each weapon you fire. You can also use your node bonus to apply to the fourth weapon. Each attack is an individual check therefore there is no stacking.
Colthan Becknar |
I think that is the plan yes. With the idea of providing any bonuses to the rolls that are possible.
Umbro-187 |
So we have them in our forward and turret arcs so we can broadside with all our forward arc and turret weapons. Those would be the antimatter missile, persistent particle beam, coilgun, and light particle beam.
Unfortunately, the dice decided to screw us this round.
We are not in their forward arcs so hopefully they can't fire on us.
Our luck will turn for us next round. Rolling a 1,3,7,1,3, on five out of six rolls is just really bad luck.
Maybe our GM will give us a chance and say the first 4 rolls we made are the ones that count so at least we hit with the coilgun.
GM Kate |
We still have an aid token and need to pass it along! Does anyone want to attempt to boost first?
Also, nicely done on the starship combat, everyone! I appreciate everyone posting promptly and putting up with some blurring of phases so we could complete the combat.
GM Kate |
Not really. If you think you have a good chance at one of the options, go for it.
Kal Maar |
I don't know what I was doing when I set up this character sheet, but I entered the ACs, SP and HP were far lower than they should have been.
I had EAC and KAC at 21 each when they should have been 24 and 26, and 48 SP and HP instead of the 64 and 62 that it should have been.
I've updated the sheet now.
