Fury's Toll | MotD

On an island off the coast of Jalmeray, the Pathfinders are called to action! The Society's friends at the Monastery of Unbreaking Waves are faced with a horde of sea devils seeking to level their recently-rebuilt temple and claim it for themselves. The Pathfinders arrive just as the invasion reaches a crescendo and must fight for their lives if they hope to protect themselves and their allies!

Sylvia F Human Wizard 9 HP (106/107)| AC 25 | F +18, R +16, W +17 (Includes MA) | Perception +17 (E) <LN 17>

Art

Sylvia Dyspell straightens her long black hair before nervously adjusting her glasses.

"Hello fellow Pathfinders, I can hardly believe I've been a field agent for almost two years now... I used to work in the Mortuary in the Grand Lodge, after defending my station during the waking of the Whispering Tyrant I got promoted to field agent. It's been exciting, but scary too."

Sylvia is unarmored and has a large reinforced tome attached to her belt via several brass rings along with numerous other magical trinkets and supplies.

A smartly-dressed, middle-aged elf, clad in studded leather armor arrives at the temple. He fishes out a flask and a brandy snifter and pours himself a drink. He takes a sip and surveys the group. With an air of superiority that is almost certainly undeserved, he introduces himself. "Yes, yes. Greetings. I'm Dr. Lazarus. You may call me Lazarus or simply Doctor." He nods to Sylvia, impressed with the tome she carries.

Dr. Lazarus pauses momentarily before continuing. "I'm a renowned forensics professor at the University of Osirion. You may have heard of me." After getting blank stares, he continues, "While somewhat skilled at healing..." he pats his healer's toolkit on his bandolier, "... I joined the Pathfinders to hone my investigative skills. That's how I make my living, you see. Relying on my books, uncovering clues, solving mysteries."

When he steps back, those nearby can see an elven curve blade sheathed over his shoulder, with a hammer strapped at his waist. The well-built scholar adds, "I can handle myself in battle if needed." He takes another sip of brandy as he meets the others.

The small goblin in leather armor enjoys some good time on the boat, perhaps because he fears a bit what may happen. After all they are going to Jalmeray, an island. An island is circled by water...

For my part, I've simply a passion... I hope you have nothing against fire? I love it.

A simple male goblin in a resume...

The keleshite woman is dressed as the people of her country. Her scimitar makes her look as a warrior but her holy symbol of Sarenrae calls back to more prayer and mystical virtue.

My name's Kyra and I does hope that the power of the goddess will help us in the accomplishment of our task on the island.

Then she stays quiet as she knows that they will need all their forces to triumph upon the evil forces they will have to face. Because they won't have been sent there otherwise.

A largely built half-elf wearing full plate mail walks toward the group with no regard for who hears his approach. He wields a longsword which currently resides at his hip and a large shield which he seemingly never puts down. The shield has a brightly emblazoned emblem of Iomedae on its face.

He introduces himself as Leharas, Champion of Iomedae. Otherwise he speaks quite little. When he does speak up references are often made regarding "The One True God" and will often refer to others as "Non-believers."

Almost every time he speaks is in reference to allowing the unworthy a chance for redemption.

Fury's Toll | MotD

You are called to assemble on the deck of he Flawless Diamond, off the shores of Wavebreak Haven.

“I said keep it steady!” Captain Thernalore Vamys barks at the undine workers on the shore as the Flawless Diamond begins to drift. Wavebreak Haven is small, with only a few dozen buildings visible further inland. The dockworkers panic as the ship's hull collides with the pier, battered bushels of palm fronds failing to completely cushion the impact.

“Now look,” Thernalore leans over the rail and inhales deeply, ready to chastise the inexperienced crew, before she sees a familiar face approaching the ship. “The Society will reimburse you for any damages, captain.”

The authority of Venture-Captain Rashmivati Melipdra puts an end to the turmoil. The middle-aged Vudrani carries herself with the upright posture of a martial artist as she moves to meet the ship, though she does have trouble finding purchase with her cane as she crosses the sand. Meleeka Sanvara, a muscular monk in tan robes, runs ahead of the venture-captain with a gangplank.

“Greetings, Pathfinders. As you can see, we are in dire need of experienced volunteers. But I'm getting ahead of myself.” Meleeka helps the venture-captain onto the deck of the ship before stepping aside to allow several dockhands room to begin unloading cargo. “The Society has enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with the Monastery of Unbreaking Waves since—”

A scream from the shore interrupts the briefing. A porter claws at the blood-soaked sand as he is dragged into the sea with a trident in his chest. A battle cry drowns out the victim's screams as several scaly raiders emerge from the bloody brine, charging with teeth and spears. The shore erupts into chaos, and the Venture-Captain calls out over the din of battle to establish order..

“Pathfinders,” Melipdra turns and gestures toward the carnage. “Protect the porters! Meleeka and I will lead the monks in defense of the ship and stop the sea devils from reaching the settlement! Hurry!”

reminder that you each have a hero point. In discussion thread, please let me know if you have any glyphs or other ways to get extra hero points. I will get the map up tomorrow morning at the latest.

Sylvia:

You think that these are Sea Devils. They are medium amphibious humanoid sea devils. They are typically very good swimmers, and can commune with sharks.

Okh cannot target red and black. They are not quite within a single 20' Burst. I have put down a template to show this. It could get black and teal. I will hold resolving the fireball until I have a decision, either from Okh, or from a party consensus.

Teal save DC21: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26
Black save DC21: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29

Both of the Sea Devils manage to avoid the worst of the damage.

Clarification on fireball:

Okh is a level 5 elemental (Fire) sorcerer, so his dangerous sorcery adds adds +3 status to his fire damage for the spell (which is equal to the spell.

Then Burn It! adds a +1 status bonus to the damage, which does not stack.

For now I am assuming that the damage is also fire, not bludgeoning.

Teal takes 13
Black take 14

Black moves forward into the water, then swims forward. It then throws its trident at Okh. The trident hits the side of the boat, just missing Okh.
trident (w/ cover): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20

Then teal moves forward as well.

The gangplank goes down 5' from the ship to the dock. We'll call that a trained balance check

The dock is level, just above the water. The depth of the water varies, in a gradiation, dropping off about 5' per 15' from the shore. It will be an untrained check to climb up out of the water onto the dock[/ooc]

Leharas, can you please put your stat block on your profile? This will slow down the game. Again, a template is here

Venture-Captain Malipdra thanks you, and awards you two lesser elixirs of life. Additionally, one of the dockhands thanks you profusely, offering you his scrimshaw whistle made of dragon turtle ivory.

“Only one? You’ve been bested, Meleeka,” Melipdra finishes dressing a wounded porter while gesturing toward her assistant. The martial artist drops the smoldering remains of a sea devil’s torso into the sand and returns to the pier to rummage through the scattered crates. The venture-captain continues the briefing. “Like I was saying, the Society has enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with the Monastery of Unbreaking Waves. The local undines have made great strides in rebuilding the monastery since we defeated the undead responsible for the school’s disappearance.

Maleeka supplies four potions of water breathing to each of you. She also unpacks a pair of swim fins for each of you. "Please make use of these, but also please return what you haven't used when you return."

See slide #4 for under water combat rules

"But the tradition now faces a new threat. An incursion of sea devils is attacking the monastery. You might know them as sahuagin. I was told that the monastery needed our help, but to see a shiver of this size make it to Wavebreak Haven means the situation must already be dire. We must come to the aid of the Unbreaking Waves, now!”[/b] She gestures to the surf, where a short figure is soothing several half-horse, halffish creatures. “Rirzik here will escort you by hippocampus to the underwater monastery, where Grandmaster Remendi is organizing the resistance.”

Rirzik steps forward, smoothing his turquoise eyebrows, and takes a deep breath, “I have enough hippocampi for everyone. They were a little spooked by all the noise, but I calmed them down.”

“And the Society came through with the supplies!” Meleeka interrupts, hauling several large bags across her shoulders as she rejoins the group on the beach. “There are enough potions and fins for each of you. I wish I could join you, but as my fire burns brighter on dry land, I think I’ll be better off seeing to the defense up here.”

Melipdra rests a hand on her agent’s shoulder in reassurance. “There is more to a battlefield than the front lines. Support our allies on the shore however you can, and remember to not lose sight of the bigger picture. Helping our allies means helping to preserve a still largely undocumented tradition. We must not let the Unbreaking Waves become another casualty of this senseless violence.”

Leharas looks down at the heavy suit of metal downing his body. After a moment of quiet contemplation he looks up at the Venture-Captain.

This will certainly be interesting. I usually sink to the bottom of water. Regardless, I will do my part and put and end to these devils' insurrection.

Impressed with his companions' effectiveness, Dr. Lazarus nods with approval. "Well done, well done, lads and lasses." He looks around to see if anyone is injured. Seeing the party remarkably healthy, he offers to help Melipdra tend to the wounded porters.

After the healing is complete, Lazarus cries out, "Brandy all around!" He fishes out a flask from his pack, and pours a round in several mugs for whoever is interested. He then pours some for himself into a proper brandy snifter, and savors a long sip.

When Maleeka speaks of the sea devils attacking the monastery, the Doctor pulls out a writing pad and takes careful notes. Lazarus asks, "Yes, yes ... do you expect them to be similar to the two types of creatures we just fought?"

Lazarus Pursues a Lead on the sahuagin. He can have 2 leads. If we believe we'll see more of the Impalers and Scouts, he'll Pursue a Lead on each.

Lazarus graciously accepts the water-breathing potions and fins and mutters, "All that underwater training may finally pay off...." He then follows the group to the hippocampi.

Who wants to claim the Lesser Elixirs of Life? Maybe our Wizard and Sorcerer?

You would need to be using a specific sea devil, not a type. In fact, "impaler" and "scout" are just labels for a given skill set. That would be like "human cleric" or "dwarf champion of Torag".

You would have to pursue a lead against "Fish Breath the Sea Devil Scout" or the like (where Fish Breath is the Sea Devil's name).

Had one of the attacking sea devils left, and you had seen him leave, you could have pursued [i

"Sorry, Okh. If I knew how to do that, I would be joining you," replies Maleeka.

In reply to Dr. Lazerus, Remendi says, “Our intelligence has confirmed sea devils and sharks. But the exact details of other threats are difficult to confirm given the variety of sea life in the region and unpredictable cunning of our enemy.”

"To help you, we'll be feeding you information as soon as we receive it. As reports come in, Zulfibha will dispatch animal messengers to your location to keep you informed. Once we eliminate the sea devil threat, I will be more than happy to share our order’s secrets."

Going to keep us moving, but feel free to post any preparations

The sea is calm as the hippocampi diligently follow Rirzik’s lead, diving beneath the waves. The temperate waters are clear enough to see the monastery only minutes after leaving the shore, a sprawling complex of over two dozen buildings flanking a precipitous bubbling trench. Impressive gardens of colorful seaweed and coral dot the landscape in labyrinthine paths. The pristine trails are ominously deserted. All signs of life are concentrated around the tallest structure at the center of the monastery—the great hall, carved out of twisting stone accented with glowing sapphires. About fifteen minutes after leaving the shore, the hippocampi reach the doorway, where a trio of undine monks stand watch. The youngest swims before Rirzik’s hippocampus and holds out his hand. The mount bucks as the guard refuses to step aside.

"Friends, these are the Pathfinders that are coming to help." says Rirzik. The attitude of the guards immediately and visibly shifts as they bow and gesture you to the central building. Rirzik departs with the hippocampi, while the guard leads you past the foyer of the school to meet with Grandmaster Remendi and her wife Zulfibha, both being human undines.

A sprawling elliptical arena has been converted into a makeshift war room. A swirling roil of bubbles and currents fills the center of the fighting pit, flanked by a pair of undines meditating on its churning eddies. Within the confines of the sphere float numerous colorful coral figurines in a three-dimensional map of the monastery and surrounding areas. A school of tiny, colorful fish swims into the room. The figurines on the map begin to move as the fish whisper to the undines, several of the coral lumps are forcefully ejected into a half-filled net near the ceiling.

“Pathfinders,” a stern voice calls out from the other side of the arena. Grandmaster Remendi takes only a moment to look away from her work before returning to watching the sphere. “I wish I could properly receive you, but I’m afraid we don’t have any time to spare. Excuse me.”

Remendi turns to Zulfibha with a raised brow, muttering to her wife while focusing on the movement of the coral. In response, Zulfibha raises a religious symbol of Gozreh, and a small cod zips to her shoulder. After a few short words, the fish darts out of the room. Remendi turns to an anxious merfolk on the other side of the arena. “And you can send the supplies to Afmari!”

“Excuse me,” Remendi says as the merfolk glides out of the arena. “I’ll try to make this brief. The sea devils are beginning to converge. We’ve been able to hold them off on the open waters, but our forces are stretched too thin to handle concerns away from the front lines. We need an elite team capable of responding quickly as the silt clears. Your performance at Wavebreak Haven has proven your skills.” A cuttlefish speeds past and whispers a message directly to Remendi, breaking her train of thought as she pounds her desk with a clenched fist.

“I’ve received your first mission. Rirzik will guide you and we will keep in contact. Please, for the sake of our school and our students, help us defend the Unbreaking Waves!”

Without making an expression to give away his feelings, Leharas looks around and is taken aback by what he is experiencing. Yes, we must defend your people. Please lead the way. Let us make haste!

Remendi directs you to a field hospital set into a series of canverns in a nearby reef. "“Someone has disrupted the magic keeping our central field hospital from flooding. Investigate the disturbance and fix the wards. Do not let any blood spill into the sea.”

Remendi hands Sylvia a magical pearl containing magic to repair the ward. Rirzik explains that the field hospital is located in a series of old eel caves, kept dry with magic to minimize the complications of underwater surgery and make it more difficult for oceanic predators to enter. The hospital also houses non–water-breathing allies from shore who are put at risk by the failing wards.

Rirzik leads the way down a steep crag toward a shimmering reef. Blood red coral grows on the side of an underwater ridge spotted with cave entrances. A large, magical air bubble forming a film around the largest opening. Past the bubble’s film, a tunnel strung with bioluminescent algae stretches into a series of caves, and though the air is breathable, water streams in from several points, forming a wet layer on the ground. Injured monks and rescued sailors lie in makeshift cots throughout the ward. Supplies are strewn across the floor. Three exhausted medics run from patient to patient, taking readings and performing triage.

Odru greets you. She explains that the coral that anchors the air bubble magic has begun to bleach, and she suspects foul play from one of the other medics. She explains that you have five main activities here.

a. Investigate the hospital *
b. Repair the wards
c. Question Ordu (female undine elf surgeon) *
d. Question Sythi (male elf nurse) *
e. Question Rahla (female undine half-elf pharmacist) *

Each character should pick on of these activities, and I will address each person in turn. Please move your tokens to the location you are investigating.
* Dr Lazerus may choose to pursue a lead on any of these.
