A slight gnome with wild purple hair and a flask of something in his hands stands near the edge of the throng. He wears adventurer's clothing, patched with strange patterns and colors that clash. He's got a short staff lashed across his back and his belt has way too many pouches stuffed with herbs and sticks and things. His hair flutters in the breeze, even though there is no breeze at the moment. A disgruntled looking pygmy owl sits on his shoulder, glaring daggers at anyone near by and occasionally mumbling in Common (speech and flight) something about heat and humidity. The gnome seems amused by this.

He nods at Pathfinders as they pass, calling out to a few with familiarity and a ready smile. He's got a rough table set up, just a board suspended between a couple limbs, but he's offering drinks to anyone who looks thirsty. "Cayden's finest, from the Accidental God's lips to yours! Guaranteed to make sweating in a jungle a little more tolerable! Phineas Hatt won't let you down! New flavors coming daily!"

The small goblin arrives at point it seems.

What do I hear? Cayden Cailean provided you such a beverage? I must give it a try for sure. And let's begin this mission with the whole perplexity the alcohol may offer!

The goblin isn't really built as a fighter. He seems weak. But a kind of fire illuminates his eyes. He's wearing a leather armor and a staff helps him to walk, may without doubt help against the small animals, and may still have others functions. No, the more special and strange thing upon him must be without contest the mask he wears on the face. This mask makes him looking as a real demon, except the rest of the body. And the voice he uses at this point. But the voice may change, also.

My name's Okh. Does he simply add.

A young vudrani human with a pair of claws emerging of his handwraps arrives at the meeting point as well. He's not so inclined to drink anything. He's more concentrate upon the next mission. He doesn't speak a lot neither.

Hi, I'm Garad.

Then his claws retracted and he meditates.

Phineas nods and hands Okh a small metal shot glass with bright green liquid in it. "Close enough! Cailean's more of a 'I help those who help themselves' sort, but I'm sure he smiles on a good drink before an adventure! Name's Phineas Hatt. This fellow here, what's your name this adventure, Bird?" he looks sideways at the owl, who groans and mumbles "...you know I hate you, right?"

"Oh right, he's Belvidere this go around. Can't ever keep his name straight. Easier just to come up with a new one." He grins, as the bird mumbles "hate you hate you hate you."

For sure! answers the goblin regarding Cayden Cailean. He won't be nasty if they honor him before the mission. That's more to be considered like a prayer by the god.

When the conversation comes upon the bird, the sorcerer smiles behind the mask. Nice to meet you, Belvidere. And how are you feeling this mission?

Witch's Winter Holiday

Pathfinders hurry around the makeshift camp, packing and unpacking supplies, making repairs, and scribing scrolls. The atmosphere is excited but tinged with some trepidation. Venture-Captain Oraiah Tolal from Nirmathas takes the lead, ensuring everyone has an assignment and is working on it. A religious symbol of Alseta - goddess of doorways, portals, thresholds, and transitions - hangs from her neck, showing two faces in profile. "No time to waste," she orders briskly. "Do what you can to help out before we depart."

For each of the following tasks, each PC may attempt one (1) check with one of the listed skills. You may instead attempt to Aid another player (foregoing your own check), but remember that the DC to Aid is now 20 and a critical failure can hinder rather than help.

Inventory

Urwal, leader of the Verdant Wheel faction, lays on the ground making marks on a scroll that stretches over 10 feet long. “This is our supplies list," he explains. "Everything from rations to ammunition to the mounts needed to transport it all with us. We need to ensure that we know where everything is. I’m not letting anyone try to forage while we’re traveling.”

Can you help him with Nature, Society, or Survival?

Magical Supplies

Envoy’s Alliance faction leader Fola Barun directs a group of Pathfinders who are carefully blending magic and ingredients inside glass vials. “Come help us ensure that everyone is well supplied for this journey,” she suggests.

Show her what you've got with Arcana, Nature, Occultism, or Religion!

Mapping

Venture-Captain Bjersig Torrsen scrutinizes a map as his loyal dog, Mahki, lies by his feet. Mahki barks to alert Torrsen to approaching Pathfinders. “I’m verifying all of our maps against what we can see from here," he explains through a series of hand signs and soft words. "Landmarks can easily change over time, after all. Why don’t you see if you can find any discrepancies?”

It'll take a keen eye to do so - as well as Nature, Survival, or Perception!

Morale

Calisro Benarry of the Horizon Hunters faction waves you all over. “Some of the newer Pathinders seem a little nervous about this mission. Can you cheer them up a bit? This is exciting, after all!” She raises a mug in cheerful encouragement of her own.

Can you bolster your allies with Deception, Diplomacy, or Performance?

Repairs

Venture-Captain Khoumrock Blackthane ensures that groups of smiths and carpenters accompanying the Pathfinders have everything they need. “A lot of this gear got damaged on the voyage over," he explains gruffly. "We need to make sure that everything is in tip-top shape.”

Time to put the pedal to the metal with Athletics, Crafting, or Guild Lore!

Research

Senior Pathfinder and Radiant Oath faction leader Valais Durant oversees a small army of agents poring over books and scrolls. A few use magical methods to absorb information even faster. As the group approaches, her face brightens. “Oh good, you’re here to help. I was able to get these reference materials from local institutions. There’s information on local plants, animals, and fey that I couldn’t get at home. We’re about to face a lot of dangers. Choose your favorite topic and start reading.”

Bookworms delight in showing off their Nature, Society, or Survival skills!

What do you do?

"Exploding cocktails?! That's just perfect! It seems like you should teach me a thing or two about this drink of yours." He gives Phineas a friendly pat at the back. "Let's do our best on this mission and then we'll have all the time we need to experiment on those drinks. Ho, ho! What joy!"

As the Pathfinders help out with the different tasks, Erevan tries to see where his skill is most needed. "My, my! So many things to do, yet so little time. The research team does look interesting, but the carpenters and smiths look like they need more aid." He heads off to Venture-Captain Blackthane's group.

Upon arrival, Erevan puts down his gear and takes out his tools. He quickly concocts an elixir and drinks it. "Urgh," he groans as his legs get weaker but his mind goes to overdrive. "Really can't get used to this adverse reaction. Well, time to help out." He assists the other Pathfinders in repairing the damaged gear.

@Erevan - feel free to try the other checks too if you want - it's one skill check for each task. Apologies for the confusion!

Inventory

Urwal nods happily as the Pathfinders work, though Okh takes the lead on calling out what's what. As the goblin describes the contents of a wooden box, the iruxi frowns before smiling. "Ah, we seem to have brought extras. Please, take one for yourselves"

Each PC receives their choice of one of the following:

Magical Supplies

Fola nods appreciatively at Avonatha's work before clapping her hands for attention. "My thanks to you all - you have created more than enough elixirs and potions for the expedition. Please, take some of the surplus with you."

Each PC receives 1 lesser healing potion.

Mapping

Mahki wags his tail as Bjersig smiles. "You've got good eyes, young one," he remarks, making a few changes to the parchment with a deft hand. "I'll make sure you all get a copy of these."

The group receives a survey map for every map in the first part of the adventure!

Morale

"That's the spirit!" Calisro cheers as Okh dances and the younger agents clap and whistle. "You'd be amazed how the karma comes back around, you know."

Once during the adventure, each PC can receive a +2 circumstance bonus to one skill check or attack roll. You must decide to use this benefit before rolling.

Repairs

Khoumrock grins, though it's a bit difficult to see from under his helmet, and gives Erevan a friendly slap across the back. "That'll do it! Here, we used some of the broken pieces of cold iron to make ammunition while you were working. Take one for your help."

Each PC receives 1 non-magical low-grade cold iron ammunition of their choice from the Core Rulebook.

Research

Valais frowns. "You've been stuck on that page for a while now - why don't you try something else to clear your head?" she gently asks Garad.

Once during the adventure, each PC can automatically succeed at one check to Recall Knowledge.

With a little extra time on their hands, the five Pathfinders discuss how they can help their fellow teams most effectively.

Metagame time! Each table has 4 Aid Tokens (1 of each kind). Over the course of the adventure, we'll be passing them to other tables (and hopefully receiving some in return). Aid Tokens can be passed in a 'default' state, or they can be boosted to provide greater benefits to the recipient. However! Only one PC may attempt once to boost a particular Aid Token. Discuss amongst yourselves who would like to attempt to boost each of the following Tokens:

Allied Offensive: This token increases the damage you deal on an attack. If you wish to attempt to boost it, make an attack roll.

Burst of Healing: This token heals all PCs at the table. If you wish to attempt to boost it, make a Medicine check. Alternatively, you can automatically boost this token by casting one spell with the [healing] trait.

Timely Inspiration: This token grants all PCs at the table the benefits of a bard's inspire courage for 1 round. If you wish to attempt to boost it, roll a Performance check.

Provide Knowledge: This token lets a PC automatically succeed at a check to Recall Knowledge. If you wish to boost it, roll an Arcana, Nature, Occultism, or Religion check.

Everyone gathers around a makeshift stage as the sun starts to slip below the horizon. Pathfinders whisper to each other in anticipation.

Venture-Captain Oraiah Tolal addresses the group. “Pathfinders, our expedition begins tomorrow. We have a day’s travel to reach the site where we will find the Door of Seasons. The founders of our Society may have been unable to reach the realm that lies beyond this magical gateway, but we have something they lacked.” The Venture-Captain holds a verdant crown aloft. “This is the Perennial Crown, an artifact that will serve as the key to opening the door. I hope that Alseta will bless us as we find this doorway to a new place. From what we’ve been able to gather, there’s a demiplane on the other side. The demiplane and the crown alike are closely tied to the Thorned Monarch, Qxal, an evil fey who once terrorized this region. The Pathfinders who recovered this crown faced steep opposition from the Monarch, and I have no doubt they will defend the Door of Seasons even more fiercely. Be wary any fey you see along the way; they are likely to be working for Qxal. Stay in groups of four or more for safety and help each other. Make any final preparations that you require and get a good night’s sleep; your next few nights will be on the trail. We leave an hour after dawn.”

Day breaks, and the excitement around the camp is too high to allow any Pathfinder to oversleep. Agents perform morning rituals, eat breakfast, and take a final look through maps and plans. Venture-Captain Oraiah Tolal gathers everyone together one last time. “I know that we’ve prepared well. We’re going to stop this Thorned Monarch. I have a small gift for each of you: a signal whistle with an engraving of the Perennial Crown. Use it to signal your fellow Pathfinders if you need help. And now, into the wilderness!”

"Much obliged, sir! I hope we don't have to use it, but..." Phineas shrugs.

We can send one of each kind and we can only send it once per part, so which one do we want to send first?

We'll go ahead and pass the Timely Inspiration token to another table. Unfortunately, Okh didn't manage to boost it - but it still functions, so no worries! And if someone wants to try to boost another, we can send it on its way after a day or two.

A dwarven man in armor reminiscent of a metal diving suit sets his helmet in place as a half-orc woman in a tricorne hat lends a hand. She ponders, “I like your style, Blackthane, but isn’t this a little more suited to underwater?”

Khoumrock Blackthane responds, “It’s good armor still, and I’ve made a few adjustments so it works better on land. I’ve come out of retirement for the sixth time, and I’m going to be comfortable.”

Calisro Benarry grins. “Can’t argue with that," she answers. "Then again, I’m always comfortable.” She turns to address the gathered agents. “Pathfinders, we’re setting out. Our goal is a horizon that no one of this world’s ever seen. But Qxal is aiming to make sure we don’t get there. Everyone, stay sharp and work together.”

“And mind your equipment!” Blackthane adds.

------------------------------------------------

After what seems like hours of hiking through the jungle, Khoumrock Blackthane puts a finger to his lips and then speaks quietly. “There’s things here that aren’t what they seem. Some of those fey are real tricky...looking like things they aren’t. Don’t trust your eyes.” A noise catches the venture-captain's ear, and he waves at the group before stomping off through the underbrush. As the sound of his passage fades, the sound of running water fills the air - as does the sound of frantic neighing!

Pushing through the dense vegetation, the Pathfinders emerge from underneath the canopy to a narrow riverbed. A bit further downstream, a magnificent horse tosses its head and tries to pull one of its front hooves from under a rock. It continues neighing frantically as it spots the Pathfinders, three legs splashing water vigorously.

Will: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

That's the most amazing horse you've ever seen - you've got to free it, mount it, ride it!

Mechanically, you are fascinated and must spend each of your actions to move closer to the horse.

We're dropping into initiative because there's some time-sensitive stuff going on here. Feel free to look in the Initiative spoilers (I use them for consolidating large numbers of rolls), but please don't look inside any other spoiler unless it is labeled with your name.

Initiative:
Avonatha Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Erevan Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

Okh Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Phineas Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17

@Avonatha, please update your stat bar with information such as AC, saving throws, hitpoints, etc (see other PCs for examples). If you want assistance configuring that, just let us know in the Discussion thread and someone will help.

The Vudrani isn't sure what to do because he doesn't know animals very good. But he steps forward and tries to calm down the horse.

We don't want to hurt you. Calm down and we will help you to go away from this river.

Witch's Winter Holiday

@Garad - unless you have a way to speak with an animal (such as speak with animals), you cannot use Diplomacy to influence them and must instead Command an Animal using Nature. That being said, you can use that action even if not trained in Nature - so I'll swap the modifiers and use that sweet roll to resolve the turn.

As Garad speaks, the horse slowly begins to calm down. Its eyes are still wide and it shakes its head every few seconds, but the frantic neighing and splashing have died down.

"Still hate you, boss." the owl mutters.

"Not helpful, owl. NOT helpful." Phineas stops and draws out a harmonica, clearly thinking to sooth the savage beast.

Witch's Winter Holiday

@Avonatha - In 2nd edition the Recall Knowledge check is secret, meaning the GM rolls it without showing the players the result. If you want to use one of your actions to Recall Knowledge, just let me know and I'll let you know what your character remembers in a spoiler.

@Erevan - No, you just feel the overwhelming urge to stand there.

The horse whinnies, but it sounds less like a cry of an animal and more like an evil chuckle. It shakes its mane, and the golden hair falls away to reveal matted green fur and long, vine-line tendrils instead of its mane. Its transformation complete, it bites at Erevan!

Red Bite vs AC 19: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (1) + 13 = 14
Bludgeoning damage: 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (2, 4) + 7 = 13

The elf slips slightly on a wet rock, and the creature's jaws bite the air behind him. Enraged, it bites again!

Red Bite vs AC 19: 1d20 + 13 - 5 ⇒ (15) + 13 - 5 = 23
Bludgeoning damage: 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (5, 2) + 7 = 14

This time it connects, leaving a deep bruise on Erevan's arm.
