Tobias "Toby" Wraithborn |
No kiss from Sandara? OH MAN!!
Voice in the Maelstrom |
Actually I forgot that.
As he tries to garner a kiss from the ladies, Sandara leans back and says, "Maybe if you hadn't just spent the day in the bilges." Not that anyone on board smells great (except Jacques), but the bilges smell the worst.
Day 16
The ship's bell ring, waking you all and everyone quickly climbs on deck to report. Master Scourge sorts out all of the swabs jobs and Rosanne is sent to the galley.

Day 16
Swab-Repairs
"FINALLY! A day out of the bilges!" Tobias celebrates. "And we get to work as a team, Jacques! What an awesome day!"
Profession (sailor) DC 10: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Daytime Activity - Influence
With all his work on the repairs, Tobias tries to bring his happy disposition to other, particularly fellow swab, Shivikah, with some song!
"Good morning, Ms. Shivikah! I hope your day's going well!"
Perform (sing): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
Torgal Cailean |
Sneaking today!
Actobatics vs DC 10: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Constitution vs DC 10: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
”Ah, ‘it’s good t’ stretch th’ legs!” Torgal easily makes his way around the decks, but he does pause every so often to comb through the messages he’s delivering for any hidden communications or hints of something just over the horizon.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Rosanne |
profession cook: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Rosanne is too distracted today, hopefully Fishguts can save the disaster she's made of the meal.
She ties to have a chat with Conchobhar to calm him down from Torgals efforts, but maybe her day is meant for disaster. "That's a nice outfit you're wearing. Where did you find it?"
influence: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
This dice roller is killing me!
Voice in the Maelstrom |
Your efforts to befreind Shivikah and Conchobar both end badly, no positive outcome happens from those interactions. still both hostile
Fishguts is not worried by the failures of the Cook's Mate and easily picks up the slack, not shouting or berating or promising punishment.
Torgal learns that the route that the Wormwood is currently taking is a shipping lane and they're expecting to find a merchant ship any day now.
Jacques?
Jacques Lacrimoisi |
Jacques smiles crisply at the charming godling. Despite his dislike of most people, Tobias's enthusiasm is infectious. He finds himself working with him and enjoying it despite his disdain for the conditions of their work.
Profession (sailor): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
Jacques does nothing to conceal his dislike for Shivikah, and when his reaction to Tobias is outright hostility, Jacques takes a moment to menace him. "Do not choose the wrong side, or surely you will regret it," he threatens. "Stay out of our way and you may survive. Cross us and suffer the consequences. You understand, oui?"
Influence Shivikah as daytime action: Intimidate: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
Voice in the Maelstrom |
Jacques sails through his job with ease. Even the toughest repair jobs are no problem. While he works he interacts with Shivikah, the ex-slaver. She seems to take his threat seriously and tones down her attitude for now. Jacques has intimidated her from Hostile to Unfriendly.
Yes, as well as Diplomacy, Intimidate(to cow) and Bluff(to feign friendship) are options for influencing attitudes.
All the swabs succeed at their jobs, Master Scourge watches everyone closely and points out the few tiny mistakes he can find, but nothing worthy of the lash. The day ends as the bell rings and dinner starts again with Fishgut's soup and Grok's rum rations.
Everyone can take a night time ship action
Tobias "Toby" Wraithborn |
Nighttime Activity - Entertain
Tobias enjoys his grog and turtle soup around his friends and shipmates. After the meal, the young sailor takes his normal place a top a nearby barrel and begins the evening activities with a singalong.
Perform (sing): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Torgal Cailean |
Torgal joins in the song, but this time he's not trying to overpower the young man's voice with his own hoarse roar. Rather, he's trying to get the crowd on their feet and singing louder themselves!
Perform (sing) to Aid vs DC 10: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (3) + 0 = 3
XD
Jacques Lacrimoisi |
Jacques uses the backdrop of Tobias's singing to speak quietly to the dwarf known as "Narwhal". "I don't like you either, but I am advising you to stay out of my way. When things begin happening on this ship, you would do well to make yourself scarce, instead of opposing me, oui? You understand?"
Intimidate to influence Narwhal: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Rosanne |
Rosanne will try to influence Ratline. "Must be a hard days work up there on the lines?"
influence: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Really need better skills, and a better dice-roller.
Voice in the Maelstrom |
The crew enjoys another round of Tobias' singing and Rosie adds to the entertainment with her fiddle. Torgal is mostly ignored by the crew.
Rosie Perform (String): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
Toby gets +2 on influencing the crew for 24 hours
Meanwhile, a little chat between Narwhal and Jacques sees a change in attitude. Narwhal goes from hostile to unfriendly.
"Ya think! Must be nice hiding down there in the Galley all day. Ha." Ratline goes from unfriendly to hostile!
Voice in the Maelstrom |
Day 17
Again you sleep and awake with the ship's bell. Something is different today, those you are not friends with seem more hostile, intimidation done by Jacques seems to have been reversed. The crew is becoming more polarised. You and your friends are assigned the least desired jobs, while those friends with Mr. Plugg and Master Scourge get the better or easier or more interesting jobs.
Jacques: 3 Swab the Decks: Automatic success due to previous successes.
Backbreaking work mopping the decks and scrubbing them with sandstone blocks called holystones.
Tobias: 2 Rat Catcher: Automatic success due to previous successes.
Catching rats and other vermin belowdecks.
Torgal: 1 Man the Bilges: DC 12 Strength check and DC 10 Constitution check to avoid fatigue
Vile and sweaty work cleaning out the bilges.
Rosanne: 1d6 ⇒ 1 Cooking: DC 10 Profession (cook) or Intelligence check.
Kroop assigns you to help him cook.
Everyone can take a daytime ship action
Sandara speaks quietly to those that bump into her today, "Looks like they dropped the subtlety. You're not the only ones that's been trying to influence the crew. It will be almost impossible to make their allies in the crew change sides now."
Rosanne |
Daily action is to keep her head down and work diligently. Rosanne has influenced enough people to the other team.
profession Cook + 4: 1d20 + 6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 4 = 16 Edible.
Tobias "Toby" Wraithborn |
Day 17
Swab - Ratcatcher
"In The Before Times, there was a fearsome legend among the vermin of The Wormwood. A nameless fear that had a name! And that name was Tobias the Ratslayer!! His name would bring fear to the rats of The Wormwood. Mother rats would tell their children to behave or Tobias the Ratslayer would take them in the middle of the.. day, I guess. And they would obey their mothers, for the mere squeaking of his name, brought naughty mice into line!!" Tobias would tell and retell the tale of Tobias the Ratslayer all over the ship, whether those around him wanted to hear it or not, keeping the ship clear of vermin throughout the day.
Daytime Activity - Influence
In the face unyielding common sense, the young sailor would try to strike up a conversation with the tight-lipped among the crew, particularly Slippery Syl Lonegan.
"Good morning, Lonegan. Scutterbutt on the Wormwood says you took sail to get away from a murder charge. Who'd you killed? And how?"
Diplomacy (plus Entertain Bonus): 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 8 + 2 = 19

Jacques Lacrimoisi |
Noting Tobias's unwillingness to give up, Jacques decides to back his friend's play with a one-two strike. After the clever godling softens up Lonegan with some pretty words, Jacques acts the heavy to keep her from changing her mind again. "Your best course is backing me and my friends, which includes Tobias. Is not so bad, oui? You would not like to happen to you what will happen to the others who stand against us."

Constitution vs DC 10: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
”I knew it...” Torgal grumbles as he works the pumps. ”But ya can’t keep a dwarf’s spirits down - or keep him from downing his spirits, hah!”
As he washes the stink of the bilge off (or at least dampens it with the smell of ale), the priest spots Tobias and Jacques speaking with Lonegan and decides to add his own two bits - in the form of a pint, of course! ”Thirsty work, eh?”
Diplomacy to Aid Tobias: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14
Voice in the Maelstrom |
Nice teamwork. I will take Jacques' 22 and let Tobias and Torgal add 2 each for a 26. Slippery 'Syl' Lonegan goes from Hostile to Unfriendly.
"Hey c'mon guys," she says nervously, "Everyone's just trying to do what's best for them. We're all on edge. Once we take our first quarry together everyone will calm down I swear."
Torgal is yelled at again. "Get it right or get the lash! Next time will be your last slip up."
The bell rings at the end of the day. Tensions seem high as the rum rations and soup is served among the crew.
You can all take a night time ship action (cannot influence Syl again today in case you were thinking it).
Torgal Cailean |
"Aye, go stuff yerself in the bilge," Torgal mutters under his breath after his "performance review". "Ye'll fit right in wid th' rest o' th' slime."
Perform to Aid Tobias vs DC 10: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (4) + 0 = 4
Torgal relaxes that evening by drinking and singing loudly. The rest of the crew might be thinking by now that he wasn't shipwrecked so much as tossed overboard in that barrel.
Rosanne |
Rosanne will find a spot on deck as far from Torgal as possible. Since she's had a quiet day she'll wager 2 gold on the gambling. "Someone's going to try knifing him in his sleep." She remarks to those around her, "It might be worth letting them." As he hits a particularly unpleasant note.
Tobias "Toby" Wraithborn |
Nighttime Activity - Entertain
Tobias gets on his normal barrel and talks to the crew before beginning the night's festivities.
"Well, boyos, you don't have to be a samsaran shammy to feel that tensions on board today were tighter than a barnacle's bunkhole. Just remember, loves, we're all sailing in Besmara's wake. Have faith in the brighter horizon tomorrow!"
Perform (sing): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Voice in the Maelstrom |
"Aye, enough o' yer fancy words and get ta singing." Tobias makes the night musical, not helped much by Rosie or Torgal.
Toby gets +2 on influencing the crew for 24 hours
Rosie Perform (String): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
"Bloody hag, it must need tuning. Sorry Toby." Rosie apologises for the below average noises coming from her fiddle.
Rosie makes a wager on Shivikah who is arm wrestling Fipps. Unfortunately Fipps came out on top and she loses her gold.

Tobias "Toby" Wraithborn |
Day 18
Swab - Rat Catcher
Tobias has turned The Tale of Tobias the Ratslayer into a song, which can be heard when he's rat catching below decks.
Daytime Activity - Influence
Tobias finds 'Slippery' Syl again during his duties. "Hey, Syl. Thanks for the kind words the other day. I sure needed them. Hope your day is going well?"
Diplomacy (with Charming): 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 8 + 1 = 26

Strength vs DC 12: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (18) + 0 = 18
Constitution vs DC 10: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
"Hah! Joke's on him!" Torgal's voice can be heard echoing from belowdecks. "There ain't been enough time fer these t' get clogged again! Unlike someone's arse-hole..."
The priest spends the rest of the day on the deck cleaning out his mug - alternating between scrubbing with soap and flushing with water over the railing into the sea below. Once he's satisfied with his work, he offers anyone passing by a drink.
Diplomacy to Aid: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13
Jacques Lacrimoisi |
The previous night, Jacques sees Shivikah lose to Fipps in the arm wrestling contest and approaches her afterward. "That Fipps, he is not your friend. When he goes down, it would be wiser for you not to go down with him."
Intimidate to influence Shivikah: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12 Ha, luck ran out!
The next morning, he focuses his attention on the dwarf Tam "Narwhal" again, standing nearby him menacingly and cracking his knuckles. He summons his unseen servant and commands it to poke Tam every few minutes. "We are watching you," he says quietly, "me and my invisible spirit friends."
Intimidate to influence Narwhal: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15 Boo! No dice.
Rosanne |
Day action Work Diligently.
profession Fisherman + Work Diligently: 1d20 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 1 + 4 = 10
Nice being able to screw up and then add +4. :)
Rosanne imitates a storm cloud as she drags the nets to the ships railings and begins fishing. "This is what happens when no one on this f%@!ing ship knows how to do their job!" She mutters to herself.
Voice in the Maelstrom |
"We're just playing a game, ya fool! Fop off and stop threatening me. You're the one should watch yourself." Shivikah retorts at Jacques the previous night.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
After being poked a couple of times Tam has had enough and grabs Jacques by the collar and has his knife out. "Now you cut that out! Or I'll jam this dagger where the sun don't shine. Stop pretending to be a big man. You're the one being watched. I'd sleep with one eye open if I were you." He releases you and goes back to work when he notices the Captain's eyes on you both.
Nearby Rosanne is struggling to catch just barely enough fish to feed everyone tonight, muttering under her breath all the while.
Tobias encounters Syl again and speaks to her. "I don't remember any nice words. Who told you about me murder charge?" Syl goes from unfriendly to indifferent.
Torgal has Master Scourge come down and check up on him regularly. He has a dark look, disappointed that you are doing much better today. Still, he finds something to yell at you for. "Worthless sod, only doing a job properly when yer being watched. Perhaps you need constant supervision."
After work is done, the bell rings and more rum rations and fish soup is handed out. Tilly Bracket seems to be acting less friendly than she normally does.
You can all take 1 night time ship action.
Torgal Cailean |
Perform to Aid: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (6) + 0 = 6
Torgal belts out a reprise of his best song. Or perhaps his “least-worst” one. Regardless, the dwarf is as free as a keg at a wedding with his conjured ale and beer.
Jacques Lacrimoisi |
Jacques has adopted Shivikah as his pet project, and continues to try and influence the woman with his menacing presence.
Intimidate to influence Shivikah: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24

Tobias "Toby" Wraithborn |
Tobias encounters Syl again and speaks to her. "I don't remember any nice words. Who told you about me murder charge?" Syl goes from unfriendly to indifferent.
"Well, like I said. Scuttlebutt: ship gossip", Tobias gave a short shrug, not going to give away who he spoke to about Syl.
"And last time we spoke, despite palpable fear of the officer, you addressed me as a person, not a shipmate. Or at least, that was my feelings on the matter. Either way, I appreciated it."Nightime Activity - Entertain
Now almost as as if on cue, Tobias finishes his grog and turtle soup, then goes to his favorite barrel and starts a singalong with the crew.
Perform (sing): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
Rosanne |
Rosanne will gamble again, and stay away from any influence attempts going on. She's had one or two successes, and a lot more failures.
Which is odd considering how sweet and caring she is? :)
Voice in the Maelstrom |
Rosie Perform (String): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Rosie tries to help Tobias but doesn't manage to sound very good. "Blast it. My game's off. This ship is getting to me." Tobias still entertains the crew but he receives less adulation than usual. need a 20 to get the social bonus
Jacques spends his efforts intimidating Shivikah again and feels like he is making progress with her. She goes from hostile to unfriendly

Day 19
As you all scramble to get on deck again, several of the more hostile crew eye Torgal. You and your friends are again assigned the least desired jobs, while those friends with Mr. Plugg and Master Scourge get the better or easier or more interesting jobs.
Jacques: 3 Swab the Decks: Automatic success due to previous successes.
Backbreaking work mopping the decks and scrubbing them with sandstone blocks called holystones.

Vile and sweaty work cleaning out the bilges.
Rosanne: 1d6 ⇒ 4 Turtle Hunting: DC 10 Profession (fisherman) or Survival check provides enough food.
The Captain demands turtle meat today and so you must hunt leatherback sea turtles with harpoons, treble hooks, and nets.
Everyone can take a daytime ship action
As you head towards the bilges, Master Scourge and two of his toadies catch up to you. "Since you can't be trusted to work properly alone down there, Syl and Aretta here are going to show you how its done. Now hand over your weapons. I'll have no fighting each other." He holds out his hand, expecting you to give him your rapier and shortbow. "You can see Grok for them after after your shift." Syl and Aretta smirk. The women don't seem to be bothered with being assigned bilge duty.
Rosanne |
Day action - Work Diligently. Which is needed as Rosanne had no Survival or Profession Fisherman.
survival + 4: 1d20 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 1 + 4 = 13
"Why not get someone who's trained to do the fishing? Because that makes too much sense. Better to get someone who doesn't know how to do it. That way I can have a b~!#~fit over it!" She mutters under her breath. Her feelings on the Wormwoods officers managing to get even lower.
She does catch some Turtles. Imagining certain people being her target makes the harpoon fly straighter.
Torgal Cailean |
This "use a tankard as a weapon" fighting style has been coming in very handy so far. XD
Strength vs DC 12: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (15) + 0 = 15
Constitution vs DC 10: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Torgal keeps a watchful eye on his companions in the bilge as he works. Only a matter of time 'fore one of 'em tries t' shank me in the back, he thinks to himself. Lucky Drunk, make it a good ale tonight at least.

The shift starts well, the women don't really talk to you, working the bilges makes for fast work initially. Until Aretta calls you out. "Hey stop slacking Dwarf. You think coz we're women you can make us do all the work?"
Rosanne does a great job at turtle hunting. Pirates aren't usually fisherman either. The Captain will sure be glad that he managed to press-gang you.
Jacques spends the day intimidating Narwhal, seeming to make a little progress. Goes from Hostile to Unfriendly
Tobias hears some sort of disagreement going on down below in the bilges as he hunts the rats. Though his successful hunting has made them sparse and his job of finding enough to satisfy Master Scourge getting harder and harder.
Torgal Cailean |
Voice in the Maelstrom |
Aretta's face goes red, "You hear that Syl, ugly over here likes to talk back. Trying to make us sound like fools. It's usually only once that anyone ever does that to me.
