Koba 5’ steps and plants three into orange to finish what Kast started, or tries to.

Well, there are a myriad of spells about - continual lights, illusory peacocks, etc. But Kast finds nothing else of value.

Searching the room will take a little time due to its size, and of course the mirrors make it harder too. I assume you start with the centerpiece, searching around the illusory peacock, and then go to the walls after that.

Seamus will, eventually, find a secret door in the eastern wall. One mirror will gently swing aside at a touch. He finds no traps. Figure it's been 5 minutes for spell durations.

Seeing the last of the non-people drop, Seamus does a little jig. Smiling as Kast heals his wounds, he adds, "Now we get to look around right?"

Searching the room, Seamus eventually carefully checks the mirrors. Finding a secret door, he makes sure it is free of traps. Calling to the others, "Hey, there's a secret door over here." Smiling, he adds "Let me know when you want me to open it."


Val leans on the wall next to the secret door. ”Let us go on then. See whatever is hiding behind the door.”

I know! The map is all pock-marked and pitted, but all the descriptions of the main hall talk about its beauty and mirrors. Silly map.

You touch the glass and it swings silently into the next room.

Bookcases full of tomes and scrolls line this cozy chamber’s walls and a reading table with several matching chairs sits atop a thick rug in its center. A peacock made of gold sits upon the table, holding a single stick of incense cleverly positioned in its tail feathers. It is lit.

A heavy wooden door exits the room through the wall to the northwest. A figure lies slumped in the chair in the far corner - the body of a man wearing rich robes and a cloak made of peacock feathers. An elegant mirror is clutched in his hand, and a book and quill sit on the table before him.

It can be none other than Vraxeris the arch mage!

You all deeply inhale, in anticipation of sword and spell - but you see Vraxeris is not breathing! So you change your plans, ahhh, a lich is it? OK then! You pull out different weapons and prepare different spells - but he doesn’t move in anticipation of your threats. You pause and he continues to lie still.

He’s really and truly dead. With the Runeforge preserving things as it does, it’s impossible to know when, or even how, Vraxeris met his end. He’s still fresh.

Alarmed at first, Kast moves in to smite Vraxeris, and only really calms down after a few moments of quiet.

"Izo? Is this really him? He looks...less dead than dead, you know?" Kast asks Izo, also assuming this might have been a past (life?) kissing partner, but really doesn't know the details about any of that.

He does cast Detect Magic and looks for things of interest on the corpse and in the area.


Val moves into the room after the others and gives the corpse a suspicious look. She stabs it a couple times in the heart and once in each eye, just to be sure it is not simply a particularly possumic Vraxie. Once she is satisfied he is dead, she places a hand on him and concentrates to try to figure out what happened.

She is using the occult skill unlock for Appraise: psychometry. I have copy-pasted the relevant text in the spoiler below

Psychometry:

Check: Once per day, you can concentrate for 1 minute while in physical contact with an item or location, during which you receive flashes of insight regarding the subject’s nature and ownership. After 1 minute, you attempt a DC 15 Appraise check to decipher the visions. You gain one piece of information about the historical significance or the last previous owner—such as a glimpse of the last owner’s appearance or its emotional state when it last used the item—determined by the GM. You learn one more piece of information for every 10 by which your check result exceeds the DC, as long as you concentrate for 1 additional minute for each piece of information. If you fail the check by less than 5 or the item has no significant psychic imprint, you don’t learn any information. If you fail this check by 5 or more, the item appears to be psychically significant even if it’s not, and the information you gain is wildly inaccurate. If you attempt to use psychometry on an item affected by charge object or implant false reading, you automatically learn all information imprinted by the spell. You must also attempt a Will save. If the item is affected by an implant false reading spell, on a success, you realize the information was false, and can determine the true information as well. On a failure, or if the item is affected by a charge object spell, you believe the information is true.

Action: Reading an object requires at least 1 minute of uninterrupted concentration.

Try Again: Yes. Multiple readings on an object or place always give the same results unless its circumstances or ownership have changed, but additional checks might reach further back into an object’s history. This all seems a little too anti-climactic for Rastaf. He examines the corpse to determine the time and cause of death.

Mildly confused, Seamus watches the dead man, expecting him to jump up at any moment and attack. Nodding in agreement with Kast, he looks towards Izomandakus to see what their friend says. Not generally squeamish, he watches as Val stabs the dead fellow in the heart but squirms a little when she stabs him in the eye. Raising an eyebrow as Rastaf 'touches' the corpse with Val's dagger in its face.

Deciding he doesn't want to see what they do to the dead guy next. he turns towards the double doors to the south and begins checking them for traps and such. Once he makes sure the doors are clear, he interrupts the lobotomy, "Let me know when we're ready and I'll open the doors."

It probably goes without saying that he's taking 10 (39/46) on perception and 19 (41/48) on disable device.

Valena stabs the poor man a few times before touching his cold body and trying to get a glimpse of the before time.

Valena:
You see a man, utterly and completely mad. His eyes are completely vacant and of course, there’s drool. He clutches his journal but doesn’t seem to know what to do with it or even what it is. He looks about as if seeing something that isn’t there briefly, and then sighs, sinking back into his chair into the scene you saw when you entered - dying.

Rastaf finds nothing else in the chamber, and suggests the man died of old age. There is some drool, so maybe poison could be a factor. It certainly seems like natural causes though.

Kast is nearly blinded by the magical auras. Vraxeris was indeed wealthy. On or about his person, you find.

"Vraxeris, what have you done old pal..." Izomandakus observes the dead wizard as surprised and astonished as the others, shrugging when Kast asks him directly and negating, not having a clue on what happened for the man to die apparently of old age within the plane prison.

"Oh, wait Valena, why... why did you do that?" he is even more astonished by the eye stabbing and produces the mirror shard he collected from the broken opposition mirror "How are we supposed to make him look himself in the mirror now?"

While he asks the questions though, he is already retrieving the ring from the dead arch-mage corpse, while looking through the books to find out which ones store the most advanced magic.

Only then he pays attention to the journal the wizard was working in "Look here, it seems he has been writing something in this journal as of recent... maybe it explains what happened..."

"Psychowhat?" Izomandakus seems astonished to not know about this strange field of studies, he does though present a short note to Valena "Oh, the reflection thing was in the list" the dragon kind of laughs embarrassed by his previous reaction, not knowing how to deal with the situation.

"Well... let's sit later to read then... perhaps we are lucky enough to find Varexis left a clone of himself or something similar..." the red shrugs and steps next to Seamus so the elf can proceed with the door work.

Not entirely sure about Val's and Izomandakus' conversation Seamus smiles as the dragon shaped Izomandakus steps near. His eyes sparkling, Seamus pushes the door open.

Once a fine library, the books held in this large chamber - along with the bookshelves that once held them - have been destroyed by fire and force. It looks like a meteor swarm hit it. Maybe more than one.

The devastation seems complete - although it’s possible something may survive somewhere under all of the ruin. It’ll take some time to search - even with Seamus’ skill, he can’t see through rubble. The main library of an archmage, totally in ruin.

Kast declines of the not-lich's possessions, not thinking any of them will fit him in any, many ways.

"Yeah, we're going to want some of those mirrors then, aren't we?" Kast grabs some reflect'd mirrors, breaking them for parts as needed.

And when the party is ready, he will move to the first set of doors and wait for others to open it.


Retired to Taldor?

Not really sure what the broken pieces of glass would be for, Seamus moves with Kast into the hallway of the once fine library. Pausing at the door Kast is hovering near, Seamus looks up, glad that his friend had given up wearing kilts. Focusing on the door, Seamus quickly inspects it and then attempts to open it.

Still taking 10 on everything, but I guess you knew that :)

Izomandakus and Pachemu move into the library, heart taken at the destruction "Why someone sane would destroy such a trove of knowledge?"

The dragon uses detect magic to investigate before following Seamus. At the least it should penetrate a few inches of rubble.

Izomandakus finds nothing in a quick sweep of the magical eyes. But many of the piles are deep enough that they would block the spell. So you’ll need to take some time.

You open the two side chambers to find them both stacked with dead bodies - all identical. All archmage Vraxeris. His former clones, all dead and kept by him for some reason known only to himself.

It will be noted that the more recent bodies are also younger. In other words, he switched to his clone at a younger and younger age as time went by. There are over 200 bodies stuffed into these two rooms.

Kast cannot answer, though he does know the answer: it's evil necromatic stuff that should never see the light of day again.

Kast will check the other clones for magics with Detect Magic, trying to hasten the search.

Chuckling at Izomandakus question, Seamus answers sagely as he opens the first door. "Maybe ol' Vraxeris figured out it was all just vanity!"

Staring in the room of dead clones, Seamus is repulsed by what he saw. But as he realized they were piles upon piles of potential enemies he steeled his nerves a little. Turning to Kast and then Izomandakus. "Since these didn't dissipate after they were killed, I assume they are not the same as the things we fought."

Turning he headed towards the door on the far side of the wall, pausing, he turned back and asks, "What's to say that the dead one in the other room isn't the same, and another version of Vraxeris isn't waiting for us?"

Not liking the thought, Seamus turns and carefully inspects the door on the far side of the room. But waits until everyone is done with their investigations and is ready to proceed. If it takes too long, he will take out his lute and play.

Kast finds no magics upon them. Just rows and rows of stacked naked dead men, all looking largely the same.

Seamus' lute playing is pleasant, nay, enjoyable - as always. Though it's a bit macabre with all the dead clones lying around the place. Eventually you close the doors on the odd scene.

There is but one door left. Do you chance it? Or retreat?

Kast moves to support Seamus on the last door. When everyone is ready, he will open the door.

Seeing Kast head his way, Seamus smiles, assuming his friend was coming to listen to him play. About to ask Kast if he has any requests, he realizes his friend is heading to the door. Mouthing a silent 'oh' he puts the lute away and joins Kast. "I think it's clear."

Drawing his rapier in his right hand, he reaches towards the door with his left; looking towards the door, waiting for someone to give him the 'go ahead.'
