Torin Argentus
"I would always prefer to know if I am involved in any lawlessness." Torin remarks. There is not much conviction in his voice despite his origins as a monk. In fact, he was barely looking to Thonis as if in some discomfort.
After they have both said their piece he looks sidelong at her and comments in a low voice, "That dress is a surprise." Were it not for the man's continuing embarrassment she might think he was talking of her station.
Then, to try vainly to change the topic he looks to Shiyara. Perhaps he had already forgotten how dangerous that was. "I look forward to seeing what you'll wear to the gala." he continues in his normal level of volume, "I should augment my current outfit as well, but I have no idea what to purchase. At this point there may not even be time."

Thonis thanks Shiyara for the tea again in terms that make it sound as if the elven woman had taken in a lost and weary traveler desperate for shelter.
"Oh yes I did Miss Shiyara! It was so kind and generous of you to come to my aid, and then invite me into your home yesterday evening! I was absolutely at my wits end when you found me!"
"I did take your suggestion and file a complaint with the constabulary. I'll tell you all about it later."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Thonis is puzzled Torin bothered to comment on her dress, which she considers very mundane.
Oh? Why is it surprising Mister Torin?" she asks with curiosity.
Torin Argentus
Torin wished very much to have not said anything. Not allowed to change the subject as he intended he looked up as he thought of something, anything, to say instead that he had been looking at her cleavage.
"I'm not used to seeing... so much of you." he explains quietly with a pointed look to her cleavage. He was starting to feel like a cad. Practical lessons were one thing, but actually speaking with women was something he needed to work on.
Wasn't that what he was supposed to be doing by getting to know Thonis? Oh wait, that was to make cunning allies. Perhaps he should have focused on the former first. A pained expression came across his features at his continued social miscue.

"Zahur, would you mind if I have another helping, also perhaps something else to drink? If you would please." He politely asks Zahur.

When Thonis catches on to where Torin's eyes are focused she sighs a sigh of pitying despair.
"Where have they been keeping you honey? Here, let me help you."
She takes a finger and places it beneath Torin's chin, gently lifting his face until their eyes meet.
"Hi, I'm up here."
Arthur Stavian
Well if that's any indicator Torin should not know what is going on behind the scenes. If you don't want me involved that is fine, after all I am a Stavian." He offers and looks to see if anyone wants him to step aside.
But then he makes the decision easier on them, he gets up with Zahur to get that drink. Or if he already got it then he would take his second helping and glass to another table outside of the crickets radius. Either way he is out and won't hear what the plans are. You don't need to spoiler in on my case, though I understand if you want too.
Zahur of Crowstreet
The elf listens intently to Zahur's talk of expectations and surprise, waiting to catch his gaze before replying, "I think we are of a like mind, you and I." She takes a bite and lets that sink in for a moment before continuing. "This is not so different from Iadaran cuisine. The spices are different, but it is very delicious." She spears one of the shrimp with her fork and examines it before turning her eyes back to Zahur. "Does Grandmother think elves are too slender, that we need a larger portion?" Her tone is full of innocence, but the amused glint is back in her eyes.
Zahur chuckles. "Gramma would certainly have an opinion, as she does of everything... she has reached that age were one doesn't know anymore what is polite or appropriate to say, or she simply doesn't care!" He laughs again, taking care not to look at Gramma as the old woman would certainly get curious and intrude in the circle Martella had taken so much care to keep private. "You can ask her later if you are feeling brave! No, this was simply my way of giving you a treat."
---
As Lady Martella reveals the intent behind the meeting and the invitations, Zahur reveals himself apprehensive. "I'll share nothing of what was and will be talked in this table, but I'll only agree with my part once everything is said and explained... My mother had a hard time keeping me from throwing my life away and become a simple criminal when I was younger and I'll not disappoint her now."
---
He for once is not playing the fool and enjoying Torin put his foot in his mouth. He slows his eating and listens to the conversation as he enjoys each morsel.
"Zahur, would you mind if I have another helping, also perhaps something else to drink? If you would please." He politely asks Zahur.
"Of course, of course!" Zahur gets up, leaves the table and calls to the kitchen. "Vovó, uma caipirinha!"
A couple minutes later the granny comes out of the kitchen and Zahur quickly intercepts her, taking care for her not to come closer to the table.
Zahur laughs at the exchange between Thonis and Torin. "Torin, if you allow me to offer an advice... much like in combat, keep your eyes where you won't get distracted and defeated. You'll find that women will offer a more challenging fight than your previous opponents, and you are already bleeding. Oh, and be prepared to lose. Always."

Martella nods in sympathy with your sentiments, ”Very good then, I’m glad we’re all on the same page, as it were. Most of our work tonight will be concerning the vote on whether or not to repeal Primogeniture. Many guests of the Gala will be busy with last-hour persuasion, negotiation, and even coercion and we must be as well to avoid losing ground. I do have one mission that is open for anyone as one of my invitees has declined. I’m fairly confident that the repeal has enough support to pass, but I do hate loose ends. There are a few senators who have been very non-committal as to which way they will vote. It would be helpful if we knew more about their position and the reasons behind it. The senators in question are Duke Centimus and Countess Abrielle Pace. If you can suss out this information, my reward will be 150 gold pieces. That can go to whoever undertakes the mission, or I can distribute it amongst the responsible parties if you team up.”
Mission 1: Discovery (Open) It is unknown if either Duke Centimus or Countess Abrielle Pace supports the bid to end primogeniture, and while their votes will be apparent after the senate convenes, Martella wants to discover their positions in advance, as well as the reasons each noble holds that position. Divining each noble’s motivations requires a successful Sense Motive or Perception check after at least one member of the party has put the noble at ease with one or more successful Influence checks.
Martella then turns to Torin, and laughs lightly. ”Do not fret, Master Argentus. I am familiar with the monastery you hail from and would not wish to challenge you to go against your upbringing. I was hoping you would serve as my aide for the evening. There are always important messages flying around at these events and the sooner they find their way to my hands, the better. It probably seems a simple job, but I assure you that I need someone with your athletic prowess to not run them ragged in the process. It’s quite a task to move swiftly through a crowd of nobles without jostling or offending anyone. And if you wear your medal, proclaiming you as the Lion Champion, you may find favor among those who enjoyed your victory yesterday.”
Mission 2: Aide (Torin) Martella legitimately needs a senatorial aide as both a cover for her other false aides and to run communications between allied politicians. This is by far the easiest job available, but also the most time-consuming, requiring you to run messages between various politicians. Navigating the crowded senate floor to deliver messages quickly requires a successful Escape Artist or combat maneuver check.
Next she turns to Shiyara, ”You have already begun to influence the political landscape of Taldor through your art and I am hoping that you will be willing to exert it with Baron Nicolaus Okerra. He is not a senator, but his war record and general popularity make him an influential figure — one whose reputation would sway a number of otherwise neutral votes. Fortunately, I can say that he is a good man who genuinely holds the welfare of Taldor dear to his heart. Unfortunately, he is a staunch traditionalist. I have done what I can and he does owe me a debt, but I sense he is reluctant to throw his support our way. I’m hoping someone with a longer view of the ebb and flow of progress can set his mind at ease. Ismene may be able to assist you if you have difficulty determining what angle to approach with him.”
Mission 3: Politicking (Shiyara) Successfully influencing the baron will involve discovery of his weakness through a successful Knowledge(Nobility) or Linguistics check. Martella would prefer he remain friendly to your cause but he may also be influenced by or by succeeding at two Intimidate checks to browbeat him.

After a long drought of her passion fruit juice, she continues. Her features grow more serious as she turns to Thonis. ”Lady Cagliari, we are both familiar with how quickly one’s fortune can be twisted when the ‘powers that be’ flex their own influence arbitrarily. While we must always strive to bring more friends to our cause, there are some opponents who simply must be dealt with using extreme prejudice. High Strategos Maxillar Pythareus is such an opponent, as I'm sure you will agree. He will no doubt be working against us at every turn and though I regret if this should cause you distress, I need someone to keep a close watch on his activities so that we may be prepared to counter. I know you will be especially vigilant in your desire to thwart his designs and so with my apologies, I must ask this of you. Ismene may be able to assist if you discover anything... actionable.”
Mission 4: Spy (Thonis) Martella needs someone to keep tabs on political rivals and update her if they change their tactics, most notably High Strategos Maxillar Pythareus. You must stay close to the military commander, watching for unusual behavior or listening for snippets of conversation, and warn her if he takes any unusual actions, all while remaining unobtrusive. Spying requires a total of three successful Perception or Sense Motive checks, but to approach close enough to attempt one of these checks while remaining unnoticed requires the agent to first succeed a Disguise or Stealth check.
Her tone lightens again as she turns to Arthur, ”I trust you to keep eyes directed wherever you must, but you may need to make use of those quick hands as well as your 'keen wit' if you are to accomplish the little prank I have in mind. Earl Calhadion Vernisant has donated a number of historical items to the Arcade of Triumphs in an attempt to smooth over a recent embarrassment at the hands of the Pathfinder Society. Despite evidence of his misdeeds, the man has escaped justice yet again, using his wealth and influence to foist the blame onto some poor, unfortunate scapegoat. If humiliation is all we are able to serve to him, at least let it be complete.” She sighs, resignedly. ”The artifacts aren’t secured; the senate assumes anyone sophisticated enough to attend this crowded gala would never dream of stealing anything on public display. You can keep the items or return them as you wish, just so long as several of them are absent by the time they are to be unveiled, I will be satisfied.”
Mission 5: Theft (Arthur) To further undermine the influence of the recently disgraced Earl Calhadion Vernisant, Martella would like to see some of the historical artifacts that the earl donated to the senate vanish from the Arcade of Triumphs before it is unveiled prior to the evening’s vote. Stealing any single curio from Martella’s list requires a successful Sleight of Hand skill check. Martella’s list mentions five items — a buckler, a dagger, a fan, a journal, and a spyglass — but she needs only three of them to go missing to disgrace the earl. You can also appraise the items to determine value before deciding which to take.
Finally she turns to Zahur, picking up on his apprehension over potentially criminal activities. ”Do not be worried, my friend. Of all of my tasks for this evening, the one I ask from you is the least necessary. I do not wish to impugn your honor, but I do have a personal favor to ask. Since the death of my father, my brothers have done everything in their substantial power to undercut me. They are adamantly opposed to my inheriting any part of our father’s estate. To prove the point, they are donating a large, expensive bottle of 150-year-old red wine. This particular bottle was given to my father as a gift from my maternal grandmother in honor of my graduation. No one else knows the wine’s history and it would be particularly amusing if their generous donation was found to be embarrassingly undrinkable when it is decanted at the feast. To that end, Ismene has crafted a putrefying agent that will spoil the flavor of anything. Since you know your way around a kitchen and they will be bringing in an excess of staff in for the Gala, you will be uniquely qualified to gain access and destroy the wine. Be careful to conceal any signs of tampering; it must be drunk at dinner and appear to be of terrible quality or — even more scandalously — a forgery.” She finishes with just a hint of a devious smile.
Mission 6: Sabotage (Zahur) Recognizing the correct bottle in the crowded kitchen requires a successful Appraise check or Knowledge (nobility) check (I will allow a profession(cook) check instead), while injecting the putrefying agent without leaving any trace of tampering requires a successful Disable Device check.
Ismene Albus
Ismene removes a well wrapped parcel from her portable laboratory case and places it on a table well removed from the delicious food. "You do not want to get any of the substance on your skin or clothes..." She cautions Zahur with a disgusted look on her face as if she detects a foul smell. Perhaps she still does after spending her evening concocting the vile cocktail.
"I will be bringing my lab and also my scrivener's desk with me. I have prepared a number of documents in case we have need of them. Letters, memos, official requisitions, receipts of service, etcetera. If you can bring me information sufficient to discredit an opponent or even a writing sample, I will be able to supply you with fraudulent evidence to support your case." She says with a smile, enjoying the small bit of mischief Martella had entrusted to her.
Torin Argentus
Torin smiles and nods at his task. "It would be my great privilege to attend you." he answers calmly. He seems to grow more relaxed as the list of deeds is not so nefarious, but looks to Thonis (Her eyes.)curiously as a sore spot is brought up.

Lady Martella's request shocks Thonis. It shows that she can have he cake and eat it too; that with faith in the Savored Sting a path will be laid open to retribution.
She will have access that she could not herself obtain, to do something she would do anyway if she could, and she will be paid to do it. It is an epiphanic moment for Thonis in which she comes to love Lady Martella.

Her light tone suggests she's not particularly offended.
Resting a hand on his chin, Zahur thinks on his own words for a couple seconds before answering Shiyara. "It was not my intention to be rude and while generalizations are necessary for metaphors, they certainly have their problems. My words carry with them some old Yamasan thoughts that I'd be happy to share with you, if interested, in a future occasion, Lady Shiyara. Perhaps with some tea?" Smiling to himself, he then shakes his head. "Aside from my mother and Granny, I have no forceful women in my life."

Minor Retcon
Martella calls to Arthur before he goes beyond the boundary. "A moment, Lord Stavian. In truth, your mission carries with it the greatest danger. It is my hope that your station and reputation may help protect you from more serious consequences if something should go wrong... just a harmless prank, such as you are known for. But your opponent would not likely let it end there. It's true that the issue of Primogeniture has created a divide in the royal family, but Eutropia has faith that you support her position. That is enough for me and I hope enough for your compatriots to begin from a place of trust."Ismene nods her agreement that she trusts Arthur.

But just to be sure...
"Given what you've said, I assume there is no substance to the rumor Princess Eutropia will wed Pythareus. Correct?"
Martella scoffs and then laughs, a biting, ironic sound. "Is that old chestnut still making the rounds? Good gracious, no! The Grand Prince was in favor of such a match, I suspect he even began that rumor to try and convince Eutropia that the people favored it as well. She has never entertained such an idea. As a forward thinking, independent woman, she is trying to create a world where no woman must marry to secure her future.
Zahur nods to his task after he understands his actions, and of all the others, are not actually unlawful and are more in line with pranks than anything else. "You can certainly count with my help, Lady Martella. I can certainly move myself inside a kitchen, even if dressed like a guest. I must confess, however, that it pains me to waste such a good wine."
Martella nodded her understanding, "Yes, it is a shame. Still, better it should be ruined to serve my purposes than used against me to serve theirs. You have my gratitude, all of you. And a fair amount of gold should everyone prove successful tonight!"
Princess Eutropia is the adult daughter of Grand Prince Stavian III and has a scandalous reputation for making trouble and fighting in the streets. She is a social reformer, eager to establish schools and other public resources for the poor, and remove political or family restrictions for women and various minorities. Rumors have circulated for a decade that her ultimate goal is to overturn primogeniture —Taldor’s ancient law stating that only male heirs may inherit the Lion Throne — and become the first empress of Taldor.

At a signal from Martella, Ismene reaches again into her pack and pulls out a velvet drawstring bag and a sheet of parchment listing the rules of the Senate in her neat hand.
"You'll need to familiarize yourself with these regulations and be sure to wear one of these." She opens the velvet bag and pulls out an ornamental pin for each of you.
The Taldan senate houses many of the most powerful politicians in the empire, and while the empire enjoys drama, dueling, and shows of power, certain rules are in place to ensure the safety of visiting nobles and occasionally even their staff.
• Breastplates, ceremonial armor, and light armor may be worn inside the senate building, but no other armor is permitted for anyone except guards.
• Potions, scrolls, spell component pouches, and wands are permitted inside the senate building, and in fact, many senators are themselves spellcasters. However, spellcasting is not permitted within the building without written approval (often issued to entertainers).
• Only light and one-handed weapons are allowed inside the senate building; ranged weapons and two-handed weapons are not allowed inside the building.
All weapons brought into the senate building must be peace-bound—secured in a sheath with a length of decorative cord. Drawing a peace-bound weapon requires a full-round action. Guards do not need to peace-bind their weapons.• Animals are generally not permitted inside the senate building, excepting familiars and service animals.
Animals larger than an average member of the senate guard are not permitted within the building under any circumstances.• While guests are free to roam the senate building when invited, individual senators’ offices are off-limits and locked. No one but the senators and a single aide for each is permitted on the senate floor during a vote.
Anyone caught breaking any of these rules is quietly escorted outside by two guards.
Gaining reentry into the senate after being escorted out requires a successful Bluff, Disable Device, Disguise, or Stealth check, or a bribe of 25 gp; each attempt counts as a PC’s action during a social round.
Torin Argentus
Torin takes his pin delicately and contemplates where to lace it before he puts it away. Deciding to focus on the rules proves amusing to the monk. First his brow raises, and then he chuckles as he reads further. "I am to be bound in cord?" he asks with an amused tone.

Countess Abrielle Pace Only ridiculously gauche noble clothing and fine jewelry set Countess Pace apart from any other Taldan, as far as you know.
Duke Leonard Centimus A half-elven aristocrat who lost the use of his legs in a riding accident, and while many of his contemporaries believe this makes him a less capable leader, Leonard has stubbornly refused to hire a divine spellcaster to heal the damage.
Note this is only general information at this point and does not yet count toward the discovery of your mission.
"Those are your senate aide badges," Martella explains while Ismene passes the pins out. "They will allow you access to the senate during the historic vote set to take place tonight. You likely won't recognize the heraldry pictured there, they belonged to one Senator Voritas of a Taldan noble house that died off a century ago. It's traditional to distribute aide badges of defunct houses to guests they invite to witness senate events. The guards will be aware that you are not sitting staff, so be aware that they may be more wary of you, given the ease with which an assassin could abuse this system."
Anyone wearing the badge of an extinct senator takes a –2 penalty on Bluff checks against guards. The image of the badge has been added to the slideshow linked above the top post.
"They are magical items, of course. And these have a little extra enhancement I've not found on aide badges before. They allow for two-way communication with the master senator badge, which I have here." She indicates a larger brooch version of your pins she is using to fasten a yellow scarf to her dress. "This way, you can update me or let me know if something should go wrong, as it happens."

The party passes the rest of the lunch in congenial conversation, enjoying the meal Zahur provided. Martella explains that the aide badges will mark you all as guests, and not official senatorial aides. (Although Torin will be an aide to Martella, she is not a senator.) | Zahur of Crowstreet |
Zahur readies himself for the gala, he notices the clothing he bought could be used in conjunction with his leather armor with little to no adjustments, which was a nice thing since he usually felt too much out of place when surrounded by nobleman and politicians.
The rules of the gala mentioned weapons, so Zahur took care to hide his own in his person... if there were rules, it means people would bring them and if so he'd do the same. However, his traditional weapons were not "real weapons" and would feel out of place in a gala. He decided to also buy a short sword on the way to the gala in order to keep up with the appearances, making sure to "peacebond" it.
As he was about to leave his home, he also decided to take with himself his scarf... how knows if it will be needed?

He would offer farewell as each of them leave knowing that they all are here to help. Before leaving himself he would ask Ismene and Matrella, "Should I go talk with my cousin the Grand Prince and see what he thinks about Earl Calhadion Vernisan and if he would introduce me since I am so interested in the curios?"
On his way home he would pick up a pocketed scarf, -8 gold, and a few more items for his diguise kit, 2 more uses which is -10 gp.
With Martella's suggestion he would wear that suit with the pin predominantly on his upper right chest. He would leave his glaive at home but then he had an inginueous thought, he thought about disguising it as broom. With his entertainer’s outfit upon, he would wear the disguise of a witch perhaps. Contingent on wearing his entertainer’s outfit. But then he wonders if that is the right mood?

Recently, the Pathfinder Society connected him to a scandal regarding a piracy ring that was flooding the Ridonport black market with stolen trade goods, though the allegations failed to stick despite the fact that the Earl was spotted escaping his own estate by shimmying down a chimney. Commoners are eager to tell gleeful stories about how a soot-smeared Vernisant fled with only one boot astride a stolen draft horse.
Duke Leonard Centimus was something of a ladies man before his accident, the Countess relates with light laugh. He enjoys speaking of the world beyond Taldor and has become quite the tinkerer since he has been confined to a wheeled chair. She warns you not to mention the accident, as he did not favor even the most genuine sympathies when the incident was fresh, let alone now that he has made his peace with his condition.
Martella considers before answering Arthur. "Entertainers have already been engaged for the Gala and as I understand it, they require a special permit to gain entrance. Ismene could possibly forge such a document if she saw one, but that might be difficult to acquire this close to the event. I think it best you enter befitting your station and bring along the entertainer's garb if you think you should have need of it."
"The Grand Prince would certainly be able to tell you more of Earl Vernisant, but your interest might be remembered later when the items turn up missing."
You would suffer negatives to hob-nob with the other nobles in the entertainer's outfit and while you might get the glaive past a few guards, I think it would cause a problem before long.
How would you feel about letting me use Craft:Clothing to hide a Net within Shiyara's gown instead of Sleight of Hand?
Yes! That sounds like it would work very well. Spotting the item will still involve a perception check, of course.

In truth there was little he needed to do before attending the gala. He took one last moment looking over his room, and what little he had in belongings as they were neatly packed. "Keep moving forward..." he though aloud before he turned and quietly left for the gala.
Thonis Cagliari
Thonis picks up the dress she had modified and takes it home to ready herself for the gala. She will need several hours lead time to be ready. She has mixed feelings about the dress. The alterations to incorporate stout leather as a protective measure are extremely well done, so much so they are unnoticeable. The idea such a thing might possibly be needed seems a little surreal to Thonis. But Lady Marcella had implied things could get messy. Not knowing what exactly that might mean, Thonis had decided she'd best be ready for the worst things she can imagine, like people trying to stab her.
Thonis is disappointed otherwise. It's not new, or quite up to the standards of an event of this magnitude. If she were someone else, the dress would be very good. But she is not someone else; she is a Cagliari. It is serviceable, not embarrassing, and obviously Thonis wears it extremely well. She will not be sensational though, and it pains her.
Thonis heeds Lady Lotheed's advice and arrives earlier to wait in line. She figures it's better to do any waiting inside, where she can start getting familiar with the gala's terrain until the others working for Lady Lotheed arrive. A party or event like the gala will have it's own particular texture and tone. To be successful at social events, a person must identify those qualities and find ways to blend perfectly with them. It is like adding another spice to a dish, all the elements already present determine whether one spice or another will elevate or ruin the taste. One must identify which spice to be so one's presence elevates the event.
Perception (general & people watching): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
<sigh> Obviously the crappy courtier's costume rather than a noble's costume has put Thonis off her game.

The sun sinks slowly from the sky, casting a rosey glow on the white stone edifices of the capital city as it dips toward the horizon over the Porthmos River. The evening sky deepens into night as pink fades into purple and finally indigo as night's curtain drops over the Oppara stage. No stars are visible tonight and the moon hides her face behind her inky cloak, as if she would not compete with the beauty of the shining gem of Taldor.
For all across the city, hundreds of thousands of dazzling lanterns and brilliant street-lights activate like a cascade of fireflies, causing the darkening streets to, instead of sinking into shadow, glow as if lit from within by the brilliant network of illumination. The polished cobblestone streets of Senate Hill shimmer and shine in the magical light, and bejeweled senators and gala guests stride confidently through the decadent avenues. Though the less wealthy and influential occupants of the Gilded City have slunk away indoors to spend their last night of festival, vowing to outdo the fancy folk and their Grand Exaltation Gala, the highly organized walkways of the Senate Hill are even more crowded than at it's busiest hour.
Numerous laquered stagecoaches painted in the colors of the hundreds of noble houses of Taldor dominate the streets, occasionally stopping to spill out nobles clad in everything from cloth of gold to soldier's dress uniforms and everything in between. In the distance, immediately adjacent to Imperial Square on Senate’s Hill, the Senate House stands tall and imposing, reflecting back the illumination of the many countless lights. The striking hall of governance is carved from such pristine white marble that the stone seems to catch and hold that radiance before casting it back. The structure has existed in one form or another for millennia, though natural disasters, sabotage, and war have partially leveled it several times in the empire's grand history, leading to many large-scale repairs and revisions. Ostentatious columns carved with glorious scenes of the nation's history surround the building on all sides, while a pronounced flight of precisely 100 stairs ascends to the main entrance.
Dozens of carriages and many more minor nobles and gala guests stand just outside of the massive fence encircling the Senate House while members of the official Taldan Constabulary stride from carriage to carriage, pulling some people aside seemingly at random to ensure that the Rules of the Senate are enforced before the gala guests are allowed entrance onto the Senate Grounds.
Martella did not jest when she warned you of the line. While senators may enter the senate building with a minimum of fuss, the process for aides, staff, and other attendees to enter is long and tedious. You are shuffled into an expansive line dedicated to senatorial aides, minor noble attendants, and various others deemed as "people useful to people of import." The line progresses ponderously, and it seems likely to take several hours to finally reach the front. Dozens of overeager merchants attempt to hawk a variety of wares to you and other staffers — mostly novelty Taldan flags and phony pieces of historical memorabilia, others selling last minute accessories, likely featuring glass or paste stones. Several others in the line begin to bemoan the wait, touting their respective level of importance based on association with their affiliated nobles and senators.
The entire affair is quite tiresome. The waiting is nerve-wracking, for the Taldan Constabulary are notoriously thorough, yet despite the feelings of anxiety some may feel, an air of excitement runs through the crowd like an electric current. Nobles and gala guests animatedly talk politics and gossip, or offer insincere compliments to each other with barely concealed sneers, as is often customary for the nobility.
You are halfway through the line and beginning to have a hope that you will make it through unmolested when an inspector approaches you. "You've been selected for a random inspection," the Vudrani woman says. "Follow me, please." And she leads you off to the side, next she collects one of your compatriots, even though you were not standing together.

Thonis makes no protest, cooperating readily with the inspection. She's not going to get in if she does make a stink, and she carries no prohibited items in any case.
She expects the senate badge on her collar, and the matching ones worn by the others in her team, are the means by which they were searched out in the crowd. The only other items she carries, aside from a small and essential grooming kit in her purse, are a dagger in an arm sheath under her sleeve and her grandmother's xiphos. The xiphos is peace bonded and the sheath tied to a pair of ribbons attached to her dress at the waist.
Thonis knows how to use the small sword, roughly speaking, but considers it less a weapon than an objet d'art, a beautiful and interesting accessory perhaps worthy of comment or some conversation. She has paid far more attention to the beautifully crafted bronze handle than to the steel blade since it has been in her possession.

Torin notes Thonis pulled out ahead of him and this draws him from a conversation he was trying to start up about some of the different aide pins people in the line were wearing.
As he himself is pulled from the line he seems altogether pleased. He was well within all the rules of the gala and dressed expertly. He even had the medal on him personally bestowed by the prince. Looking to the Vudrani woman with a smile he does his best to be polite about this.
"I suspect you are not appreciated as you should be by most waiting to enter." he begins with a slight bow, "At the very least, take what time you need with me and know I value the security and decorum you ensure inside."

Ismene finished her own preparations for the evening with Naevia hammering on her door. Oh how she wished the woman would learn that she should not be disturbed when working at her laboratory. One of these days, such a disturbance was likely to end in an explosion!
She considered whether to bring any bomb catalyst to this event. They weren’t expressly prohibited but she suspected that the spirit of the rules implied they would not be welcome. Perhaps it simply did not occur to most people to discourage others from carrying bomb reagents in your pocket. Well, she would bring only a few. They were not likely to be necessary if things went well tonight. And they were certainly not discreet in any way. ”I shall have to research if a silent bomb is possible.” She mused aloud to herself. Naevia’s pounding knock came again, and she quickly tucked her reagents, infusions and her prized cognatogen in the black and gold beaded bag that Martella had loaned her for the evening. It was strung with a long gold chain so that it could be worn across the body with the chain resting on one shoulder and the bag on the opposite hip. It coordinated well with her dress and she was quite pleased with it overall.
Finally, she let Naevia in, the woman glaring from the hall when she opened the door. ”Do you see the time, girl? You’ve got to get going and I have better things to do than faff about with your hair!” She scolded, waggling a stout finger under Ismene’s nose.
”Yes, yes, I know. There is simply too much to be done. Besides, I know what a quick hand you are. You’ll have me looking splendid in no time.” She beamed endearingly at the disgruntled housekeeper, which nearly always served to temper her ire. It did little just now though.
”If you wanted splendid, you should have let me in half an hour ago. As it stands now, you’ll have to settle for adequate.” But she quickly helped Ismene to dress and fashioned her hair into an elegant twist that accentuated her long neck. She wore the matching emerald jewelry, her gift from Arthur and handed up a few of her favorite hair ornaments to Naevia while she worked, including a jade lion’s face, depicted in mid roar. A similar motif decorated the beaded bag she wore to top it all off… and carry her more suspect items.
Just as she was about to set out, Naevia handed her a long box wrapped in simple brown paper and tied with a green ribbon. She recognized her father’s hand in the style of the gift at once but was surprised at the heft of the box. He never saw the point of decorative wrapping paper, the ribbon tied in a bow was his one conciliation to the idea that a gift should be pretty. Inside, she found a braided leather sap, with gold tooling on the looped handle. She raised an eyebrow at Naevia and she merely shrugged. ”Your father knows more what to expect at these sorts of events. I suggest you bring it along. It’s not against the rules and clearly your father wants you to be prepared to defend yourself if someone were to get too close.” So Ismene tied the ribbon through the handle in an attempt at making it work with her outfit at least and pocketed the weapon.
🜍 🜕 🜉
She was growing weary of standing in line. Women’s dress shoes were clearly not made for long periods of standing still and she dearly missed her well broken in, tailor-made boots. She did not seem overly concerned when the Inspector pulled them out of line. At least walking was less tedious than standing. She even yawned delicately behind her hand.

"Well hello Torin, Ismene, Zahur, Shiyara. This saves some time looking for you inside. It's all very exciting isn't it?"
Thonis wondered for a moment whether or not it would be better to stay silent and not acknowledge the other pulled out of the line. But she decided it would be more likely to seem strange than not. After all they're all wearing the same badge.
Torin Argentus
"Very exciting." Torin replied casually, "It's my first gala. I'm trying to take it all in now. Nothing is ever as exciting the fifth or sixth time."
Looking to how everyone was dressed though he smiled at Thonis. "Although, it seems I am mistaken." he admitted, "You ladies look absolutely stunning every time I see you."
Shiyara

Shiyara arrives alone. Her lunch outfit was clearly a sneak preview of things to come, likely made from spare material used for the main attraction, her gala gown. The sunrise ombre returns in the bodice of her ballgown, cinched tight around her inhumanly slender waist with no obvious seams. The gown hangs off of her shoulders, material turned over at the moderate decolletage to wrap around and form short sleeves, to which her aide badge is pinned. A stylized sun in glimmering citrine is framed at the center of her torso, over the bottom of her ribcage. Dark ruffled skirts cascade down from the bodice in a midnight blue highlighted with roiling gold lace and citrine. The bustled skirts billow around her as she saunters, perhaps betraying a hint of the threats held within. Her hair has transformed yet again into a voluminous golden Galtan braid hanging down between her exposed shoulder blades. A faint scent of fresh sea breeze accompanies her, completing the impression of a calm, clear sunrise over a dark, angry sea. The statement is not meant to be subtle. A bluebird flits about her, occasionally coming to rest on her shoulder.
Overall, the outfit is intended to be the equivalent of a noble's outfit with 100gp worth of jewelry. Also using Craft:Clothing to disguise a folded net within her skirts. There is an inner pocket also used to hide her spell component pouch.

She doesn't make a fuss as she's pulled aside. Once with the group, she smiles and nods at everyone. She curtsies at Torin's compliment, and responds "You look quite handsome yourself, Master Argentus, although you appear to be overdressed. I expected to see you adorned only in cord."

The Inspector smiles at Torin, "Well, aren't you a breath of fresh air. Well met, I am Kathann Zalar. I'll start with you then, let the others see how it's done. Don't worry, I won't take up too much of your time. Now then, please let me know if you have anything sharp on you. You wouldn't want me to cut myself and bleed all over your fine clothes now." She runs her gloved hands over Torin's shoulders and down his sleeves, first. Then the same along his chest and down his abdomen, she follows the line of the belt around behind him and then does the same down his back. She sweeps along the sides of his hips and down the outside of the legs first, then up along the insides. It's a very thorough search really, and she seems to be making a show of it, though she does make an effort not to offend anyone's modesty.
"Alright, you check out. And congratulations on your victory, Lion Champion." Next is Thonis, who also checks out. She pats down Zahur next and soon finds the bulk of the knife, secreted in his scarf. "Hmm, what's this now? That's a good bit of concealment work." She complimented softly, with no attempt to relieve him of the item. "But if you wrap it at a bit of a jaunty angle, like so, people will be less likely see the shift of the weight when you bow. Trust me, you're going to need to bow." She added with a wink.
Next comes Shiyara, she receives similar treatment, "You've made this gown yourself, haven't you? Beautifully done! You'll want to be aware of the floor-lights inside. Walk over one of those and the shadow of that net would be cast for all to see."
She tut-tuts over Ismene's completely obvious reagents with no attempt whatsoever to conceal them. "And what were you hoping to pass these off as?" she asks. "Cosmetics?" Ismene answers without conviction.
"Sorry dear, that won't do it. Here, let's see what we can do." She motions Zahur over to see the tragedy of Ismene's bag. "Now, used cosmetics are rarely so neat. There's always a smudge of color here and a smattering of powder there. That's passable. We wouldn't want to disappoint our mutual friend, now would we. She's counting on you, you know."
The guard is actually assisting you to better conceal your contraband. You get a +2 to your DC to spot your hidden items. Zahur, you should probably aid Ismene in concealing her alchemical goodies as she has no ranks in disguise or sleight of hand. Also Zahur should have the syringe for his mission to conceal.
When she is satisfied, the Inspector waves you to the entrance, giving the guards standing there a thumbs up to signal them to let you through. "Have a good time tonight. And good luck, all!" She said as she bid you farewell with a subtle wink and you begin your one hundred step journey up the gleaming white marble stairs.
Torin Argentus
"It broke." Torin replies with a broad smile. Curling his arms in and pressing out his chest before splaying his fingers and letting his palms out to either side to pantomime the act. Looking over Shiyara's dress he has to marvel at the complexity involved.
I actually had to look up more than one or two words reading that description, and I have spent significant time on wikipedia studying medieval fashion!
"Mrs. Zalar?" Torin asks coyly before he feels her clutch at his half cloak and his bare arms. He flinches like an unbroken colt at her touch but settles.
After being her demonstration piece he gives her another polite nod as she congratulates him.
Arthur Stavian
Once he was about ready to head to the gala he left his room and went to see his parents. In his fine livery of a nobleman with all the frills, including his signet ring and all his jewelry, he was pronounced by the major domo of his presence and his parents saw what they hadn't seen in years. He shined like the jewel they thought they had prepared years ago. With smiles and hugs they accepted him into their drawing room. "Wow, Arthur... you look great," his dad complimented him as his mother was speechless just looking over it all.
Then he became very diplomatic, "Father you will be proud, I am going to the senatorial gala, to rub elbows, meet new allies, and perhaps find the one. Of course once I have found a suitable woman, I will bring her for you to approve before my foolery gets the better of me. I would ask that I could have one of your ceremonial swords for this occasion." His words seem to have an astounding affect on them as their wishes swirl before them in their imagination. He lets his father pick out the best weapon and lets him peace bind it after it is attached to his belt. He stays long enough that they hear of his aunt stopping by for a quick spot of tea before going to the gala herself. When she arrives they all accept her with bows and curtsies. Her entourage of mostly women gossip to each other and about Arthur. After exchanging pleasantries for the small visit Arthur asks, "Aunt it seems luck has kissed me today. I was just going to head to the Gala as well. Would it be possible for me to join your entourage?"
Soon after they were off and by carriages were at the gala itself within minutes.
Upon entering he would make a grand bow to his aunt until she was gone with her main entourage. Then he began his work. Looking for the curios and their owner. For him to alter his image he would need to stalk his target, Earl Calhadion Vernisan.
He turned on his halo for it to glow and make him that much more obvious. He had several plans to change his appearance. With the pocketed scarf as a sash over his chest and concealing the parts of his disguise kit he would need to change appearances. Also some of the larger pieces remained in the belt pouch at the small of his back. His sap hung on the opposite side of the weapon his father loaned him.

Missed that Zahur already had the syringe.
Zahur smiles as the woman compliments his hidden knives, doubly surprised in fact: first for her having been able to find it and secondly for her to be on their saide... actually on Martella's side.
Once asked, he moves towards Ismene to help her. "If you are disguising whatever this is as makeup, I believe you won't want to actually hide it too well, or otherwise it will be suspicious... who hides makeup, right?"
Aid Another - Sleight of Hand (Ismene): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13 If Ismene's clothing is specially bulky, she probably should receive +4 in her check. Adding the Aid Another from Zahur, the aid from this NPC and her own Dex, we are talking about +10... not too awesome but as good as it can get!
Sleight of Hand (syringe), bonus from NPC, pocketed scarf: 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 9 + 2 + 4 = 33
The DC for Zahur's itens are 27 for his thieves' tools, 38 for his knives and 35 for the syringe!

You ascend the hundred marble steps to the senate of the Taldan empire. Hundreds of nobles, senatorial aides, and visiting dignitaries mingle within and without the grand halls of the senate. The parade of colorful clothing in all manner of cuts and styles, the cloud of clashing perfumes and cologne, and the sounds of gossip and chatter coming at you from all sides is nearly overwhelming. You spend a few minutes getting the lay of the land.
A1. Arcade of Triumphs
This entry gallery celebrates Taldor's abundant military and political glories. Banners and trophies line the halls of the arcade, some displayed openly while others rest behind intricate glass cases, while armor stands and display cases present countless artifacts belonging to great heroes and soldiers. A score of Taldan Phalanx troops stand at attention, acting as both ceremonial honor guards for the senate and guides to some of the military assets on display.
High Strategos Maxillar Pythareus is here, a muscular man in his early forties with weathered skin and close-cropped silver hair. He wears a blue-and-green tabard emblazoned with Taldor's official coat-of-arms. Also here are the five items donated by Earl Calhadion Vernisant for the night's ball--an elaborate silk fan, a brass spyglass, a leather journal, a fine buckler, and an ornate silver dagger. The artifacts appear to be shielded from view by a curtained enclosure which has been raised temporarily for the Gala.
A2. Courtyard
Breathtaking gardens surround the senate building. Catered patios segregated by short iron fences, coordinated military displays, and even a makeshift zoo of imported animals and magical beasts fill the few open spaces here, even including a small hive of bees busily pollinating the exotic flowers and making the honey used by the senate kitchens. Many of the senior nobles enjoy the breaks between ceremonies in this open space.
Lady Gloriana Morilla is here, sporting the finest of Absalom's fashion. She greets Princess Eutropia warmly and a small crowd is beginning to gather around the pair.
A3. Emperor's Hall
This gathering space before the senate chamber is set aside as the property of the emperor, and features countless statues and portraits of previous grand princes. While formally these chambers are for the use of the emperor, no grand prince has ever maintained an office within the senate building, and the space is understood to be public meeting rooms by silent agreement.
A4. Gallery (Note that this area doesn't appear on the map.)
The second floor of the senate building acts as an observation deck to the events of the main floor, with offices for various senators lining the outer walls. This area of winding passageways is typically open to noble observers and senatorial aides. Much of the gallery is dedicated to entertaining the children of various nobles, with extravagant performances occurring throughout the upper balconies of the senate building.
Countess Abrielle Pace is here, dressed in ridiculously gauche noble clothing and fine jewelry. Also here is Wyssilka the Fantabulous, a halfling jester entertaining the children.
A5. Imperial Archives
The Imperial Archives could have been Golarion's greatest collection of transcribed knowledge, had any care been invested into its upkeep. Centuries of redirected funding and senate-sanctioned pruning of "sensitive information" has ruined the once immaculate reputation of the archives. This vast library now acts as a repository of haphazardly curated books, senate minutes, and genealogy records left open to the scrutiny of uncaring nobles. During the Grand Day of Exaltation, a host of rising aristocrats and aspiring courtiers here tout their knowledge of Taldan history.
Duke Leonard Centimus is here, a round-faced half-elf seated in an elaborate wheelchair.
A6. Senate Floor
Normally closed to non-senators, the vast, circular senate floor is open to special guests during the Grand Day of Exaltation, and myriad would-be nobles take the opportunity to duck in and live out a few moments of power fantasy, issuing mock legislation or engaging in lively debates.
Baron Nicolaus Okerra is here, a handsome man standing a head taller than the rest of the crowd. Also here is Kalbio of Breezy Creek, the intended recipient of the noble elevation from Grand Prince Stavian. He uncomfortably wears clothing of noble finery, constantly fidgeting with the cuffs or scratching at his neck.
A7. Servant Area
While several hidden corridors crisscross the senate building, allowing servants to come and go without disturbing the assembled politicians, this area houses most of the storerooms, workshops, and kitchens where the building's small army of servants bustle around to maintain the facade of opulence. Even this area, never meant for noble eyes, is of exceptional quality, though the gilt has worn thin on most corners, and here and there cheap repairs mar artistic furniture.
Each of the people of import are currently predisposed with sycophants and senatorial matters, considering the coming deliberation. You'll have to wait to try to influence them, but in the meantime, you can do your best to work the crowd.
A PC can attempt an appropriate skill check with a set DC for one of the areas of the senate, hobnobbing and impressing the general crowd in that area. Each area has two thresholds, which represent levels of influence over that area. Every point by which the PC's result on one of these skill checks exceeds the DC is added to a pool of points specific to that area. When the number of points earned by the party as a whole exceeds the threshold of an area, then the GM provides the PCs with the information and story award associated with that area's threshold value.
You can each make one check now. These are the skills associated with each area:
A1. Appraise, Knowledge (history) or (nobility), Perception, Spellcraft, or Use Magic Device.
A2. Handle Animal, Knowledge (engineering, local, or nature), or Perform (keyboard, percussion, sing, string, or wind).
A3. Has no threshold or story reward.
A4. Acrobatics, Disguise, Perform (act, comedy, or dance), or Sleight of Hand.
A5. Knowledge (arcana, geography, or history), Linguistics, Profession (librarian or scribe), or Stealth.
A6. Bluff, Knowledge (local, nobility, or religion), Perform (oratory), Profession (clerk or barrister), or Sense Motive.
A7. Craft (alchemy, carpentry, jewelry, sculpture, or stonemasonry), Heal, Intimidate, Profession (baker, butcher, cook, innkeeper, or porter), or Sense Motive.
You can also make an argument for using a different skill than those listed, but it should have good synergy with the area or event.

Zahur moved through the arcade of tryumphs and then crossed the courtyard. While beautiful, he doesn't spend much time there, not really liking animals and questioning the wisdom of having a bee hive in the place. What Zahur is really curious and eager to see, however, is the kitchen and as soon as he can he start to look around, talking to some cooks, chefs, waiters and so on. He looks for inspiration and new trends, smells and spices!
To those who ask, he tells he is also a cook and doesn't hide his interest of the place, knowing that for him to complete his mission it would be easier if his presence was not suspicious in the place.

Some of it might even hold a grain of truth. She emphasizes her soft elven accent and liberally slips elven words into her speech. As she makes her way around the room, she makes eyes at Baron Okerra over the sea of heads.
