Slow to react, Damon was shaken out of his reverie when the demon attacked Roscoe. With Radiance pulsating in his hand, Damon charged up and attempted to smite the evil creature!

Roscoe rolled with the demon's swing so as not loose his head.
With a quick turn he rushed back in like water once splashed away returns like a wave. Leading the crest of this wave was the halfling's rapier. His footwork brought him but the creature had moved as well and his rapier did little against the monster.

Lol that sounds like a challenge Roscoe :)

Assuming the first bull was killed
With Damon cutting the first monster down with his sword, Stella prepared herself for the second beast that would surely appear any second. Taking a defensive stance, she readied herself to throw her ball of flame attack at the first thing the appeared outside of the maze, hoping that to keep her focus long enough to get a good hit. It shouldn't be so hard, she thought to herself quickly as it approached the exit, it's kind of a hard target to miss

Ready an action to attack the beast as soon as it appears in Stellas line of sight

Produce Flame: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 1

Round 1

Just in case...using Round 1's Reaction Sentinel strike!

When the bull-thing attacked Roscoe, Kokam was able to jab it quickly with her spear...

spear, two-handed, reaction: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

...but the demon's reactions were quicker, batting away her attack!

Round 2

If First demon dead..
Kokam sees the second demon turn the corner, and backs up to give herself some more room.

Moves back 1 space to occupy the square where the first demon fell...

Then she waits for the bull-demon to charge, guaging it's approach, waiting for the right moment to strike.

Attack, spear, two-handed: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Attack, openhand, bonus: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

But once again, her blows are ineffective against the creatures' thick skin!

Readied action, attack when the bull-demon enter adjacent square.

If the first demon is still alive...

Dismayed that the first bull-demon still lived, Kokam attackes with purpose, trying to bring it down with spear and hand...

Use same rolls a above.

Determining that it wasn't fatal, she turned to the group and stated, "She'll live but she might get a nasty scar from it. I think it might be best to camp here for a while after we make sure we're alone in this maze. I know I could certainly use some time to recover and hopefully regain some of my strength."

I think this would be a good opportunity to take a long rest here with the NPCs as previously discussed before venturing into the sewers and whatever's happening above.

We should have a healing potion left, right? The greater one I think.

Actions 1:

Damon, worried about Kokam’s grievous wound, insisted that they use the powerful healing potion they had found on the lead cultist. Anxiously, he said, “Let’s get that healing potion into her—there is no telling what the foul demon wound will do.”

(Unless someone stops him, he will get the potion and carefully feed it to Kokam).

Greater Healing Potion: 4d4 + 4 ⇒ (3, 1, 2, 2) + 4 = 12

Actions 2:

”With the cultist lair cleared out, we can bring everyone in, lock it down, and rest up before we chance the surface,” Damon suggests, ”though we do need to figure out what to do with the prisoner.”

Action 1
"It's so fast..." was all Kokam had a chance to think before the demon skewered her. First here was pain, then warmth as her lifeblood spilled down her body...then darkness fell across her mind, her nose filled with the demon's rank stench.

She woke on the hard ground, Damon's face above her, the sweet taste of the potion still on her tongue. She sat up quickly, wincing from the soreness in her side, the tear in her bloody tunic evidence of her brush with death. Poking a finger into the tear, she could feel the scar there. Looking at Damon, she said, "Thank you , Damon." then embarrassed, looks away and gets herself on her feet.

Action 2

"Let's let Onyx take the prisoner back to Neatholm for justice. Then rest. We have no idea what is going on on the surface, we need to be at our best."

Nodding, Damon helped Kokam to a seated position, then out of the maze and back into the main portion of the complex. "I'll go get the others," he volunteered, quickly making his way back to where Onyx guarded the rest of their party.

As Stella waited for Damon to return with Granite and the others though Damon could be just returning as she starts so he can join in on the conversation, she released a big sigh and said to no one in particular "I don't know about all of you but this is all just a bit overwhelming for me. I had only planned on stopping in Kenabres for a few days and now I'm discovering conspiracies and fighting fiends who are apparently resistant to fire. This was not what I expected to do when I was told to journey North and I just feel... a bit lost and out of place; and I'm finding it hard to stay as positive as I was before all this started."

Actions 1:

Weary and injured, Damon responded to Lord Gwerm's inevitable whining, saying, "Yes, I know we are close to the surface and could reach it in just a few more hours of travel. We are injured, though, and have no idea what the condition is above ground. This place is now defensible and we can rest here while Onyx returns the prisoner to face proper judgement."

As Damon guided the noncombatants to their resting area, he spoke quietly to Onyx. "We are in need of a strong ally in these tunnels below, given the activity of cultists and fiends. Would you be willing to return with the prisoner to Neatholm? Perhaps team up with Lann to protect the mongrelmen until we can establish a line of communication with whatever remains of the forces of good in Kenabres?"

Spending time with Aravashnial, Damon described the demon attackers in detail, trying to learn more from the experienced wizard about the special abilities of the fiends and how best to combat them. He even brought the body of one of the defeated creatures close enough for the elf to explore with his hands if he wished, hoping to learn something about the foes he would undoubtedly be fighting in the coming days.

Hearing Stella's words, Damon spoke encouragement to the overwhelmed nature priestess. "I do not know why we were spared by the dying dragon, but my heart tells me we have the opportunity to do some good yet in this world. Yes, the situation is dire, but we have each other and a clear path back to the surface world in the morning. Let us hope that being back under the open sky lifts your spirits as wielding this holy weapon has encouraged mine."

Level 3 is pretty important for Damon. He gains 8 hp, Divine Health (immune to disease), and chooses the Oath of Devotion. This gives him Protection from Evil and Good as well as Sanctuary as oath spells, and he receives channel divinity he can use for Sacred Weapon and Turn the Unholy. Lay on Hands increases to 15 hp, and he choses a new spell since one of his previous ones was filled by an oath spell -- Purify Food and Drink.

In the morning before they broke camp, Damon used some ritual magic to diagnose the infection in Hallvardr's leg (Detect Poison and Disease). If it still looked bad, Damon used holy power granted by Iomedae to remove the disease from the Ulfen warrior before it could progress any further (5 hp from the Lay on Hands pool). Once Onyx and his prisoner were well away, Damon also prevailed on Kokam and Stella to free the lizard, luring it away from the former cultist lair using magical smells as it had worked so well before.

I too just arrived in this city but I came to fight demons... so I am not displeased. I am 'signed up' already, he says slumping down against a wall for a breather.

I worry for my friends... as well as my band leaders Lief Longarm and Asa Sturldottir. We were separated when the attack came.

After a fashion something prompted him to rise to his feet. Intuition? Inspiration? The iron hand of Gorum steered him none the less and he made his way back Through to the cultists lair as their band of refugees were recovered, both to give the enemy fallen Gorumite last rites, abbreviated to be sure but performed none the less, and to recover a suit of armour and shield...

Hostillia had a shield, correct? And I think there was some scale mail iirc?

He'd be happy with the leathers he'd worn on his long journey but it was time to wear something a bit more enduring. He'd adjust the fit in the morning and look forward to getting something better in the future.

I'll try this lot later... I am bone tired. We have done good service I think... I think my fate aligns with yours. If my band leaders are missing, dead or have no need of me, I will continue with you.

3rd is big for me too... like getting decent armour at last, and expertise. I have no HD left to spend unless I level before I rest... how will rest affect me and will a medicine check help healing, assuming someone has it?

When the group was reunited he entertained them all with a song and saga of Erik Halfhand, who despite being crippled with a maimed hand at birth, went on to great fame as a warrior because of his tenacity and bravery.

Kokam was oblivious to any shared embarrassment with Damon, looking down at her bloody clothes with dismay, "How am I going to clean these..." she heard muttered to herself.

At Stella's admission of feeling of inadequacy, Kokam nods, "I too have felt overwhelmed....and I've been training to fight these demons most of my life." she said with a smile, "But I, you ....we all did what was needed to survive and help our charges to survive. I think that is all one can ask."

Looking down at her hands, "My training has revealed abilities that my Elders at the monastery had hinted at, but never fully explained. Understanding will come with experience " she intones, initiating the measured tones of her Elder, smiling at the memories.

Going to follow the traditional Path of the Open Hand...

Later, as Hallvardr, accompanied by Damon, sang of heroes and their accomplishments, Kokam sat a bit apart, so that she had all of her new friends in view around the fire they'd made. Taking out her drawing supplies, she quickly sketched them, trying to capture Hallvardr in full performance, Damon's concentration as he leaned over his lute, Stella and Roscoe in earnest conversation...Her friends, her comrades...

After listening quietly to the Ulfen's story of the Halfhand - and a little less quietly as she debated the merits of releasing the potentially hostile lizard - Stella through sheer exhaustion, managed to fall asleep. As she dreamed of flying through the cosmos, she swore there was an eerily familiar looking lizard accompanying her for part of it before fading away. She was certain of one thing though, as her dream seemingly came to a close, she heard the familiar voice of Desna speak to her once again reassuring her with Let the night always be with you

Waking up the following morning, she felt more at peace than she had the previous night, and though unsure why, had a surprising change of heart and agreed to safely release the creature back into the wild (swearing to the party's disbelief afterwards that the creature...nodded to her & Kokam as she did so)

"What? The demons still attack the city three days later?" thought Damon, distraught that the city defenders hadn't rallied better than this. "The demons are more powerful than your pitiful defenders hiding behind their wardstones and defeated dragons," the voice whispered in his mind again, but Damon was too busy to pay it much heed.

"Does anyone have a map of the city?" asked Damon, adding, "If we can mark the locations of the three cultist safehouses and the locations to which Anevia, Aravashnial, and Lord Gwerm wish to be escorted, we should be able to figure out which way to go next."

When he looked at the citizens they had been able to rescue, Damon warned, "Be cautious, the city seems much different, and the locations you might have thought of as home may no longer be so hospitable." As an aside to Horgus, Damon asked, "You must know all the ins and outs of Kenabres having served nobly so long here, Lord Gwerm. Could you lead the mapping effort so that we may benefit from your wisdom in getting everyone where they need to go?"

"This looks more like I'd imagine the abyss than any city. Not sure were in Kanebres anymore." He looks around strangely, for him, somber.

"This place don't look safe. There is safety in numbers. I think we'd be wise to remain together. Not splitting up. Shortest distance is usually a straight line. Where are all of these separate places? Which is closest? And which will we be near enroute to the farthest?"

Just one question...did we get an additional hd for leveling up, then recover one after the long rest the next morning? Or does the level up not give us the HD, just increases the maximum HD allotment and we only recover 1HD between leveling and resting?

OOC: I went with leveling up just increases your maximum HD but I suppose I could have gone with an increase to the maximum HD and a also a HD (like I did and should do with hit points).

Since I like PCs to survive (no PC means no story), let's grant you all 2/3 HD at the start of the day. Remember that you can spend HD at the end of a long rest with 'our rules'.

Kokam stood, slowly turning around, looking at the ruined city all about them, remembering walking through the crowds of people, laughing, arguing, dealing....living. And now this...at the distant shriek she starts, all of sudden thinking, Oh...the children...the children...". A tear makes its way down her cheek, and she absently reaches up to brush it away, just now hearing Horgus' demand.

She waits for Damon's diplomatic response, then adds her own brusque reply, "Whomever is closest...that will where we go first."

Then she turns and looks back over the ruined city...

Action #1
Stella's relief at finally returning to the openness of the surface turns to horror as she not only sees the destruction that the initial attack caused but also realizes that the danger never left. We need to do something... anything to make this right she thinks to herself as she takes in the scene in front of her

Action #2
The voices of the others snapping her back to reality, she waits until everyone has spoken before responding "If there's a spot in the city where people would've attempted to bunker down, we should go there first to try and help anyway we can as well as try and gather information. If one of the other locations is on the way, then it might make sense to quickly check it before moving on.

OOC: magic items (again)

I have proposals from Damon (two items), Stella (two items), and Hallvardr (one item).

I still need to review powers and make sure they are comparable to similar powered items.

However, I aim to 'present' at least one item in this first book (of which we are 3/5 through) so please get me at least one magic item. This is you Kokam and Roscoe. :)
