With Roscoe's encouragement bolstering Kokam, Damon focused his fury on the powerful enemy knight, hoping to bring him down before he landed any of those mighty mace blows! Stepping to the northwest, the young paladin took advantage of Roscoe's flank, Hallvardr's inspiration, and his divine blade's power to try and smite the evil crusader with a powerful downward stroke!

(Moving to flank to get advantage on the attack, planning to use smite and bardic inspiration on damage--unless it is needed to make the attack land.)

Sacred Blade Radiance Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 6 + 3 = 11
Sacred Blade Radiance Advantage Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 3 = 17
Bardic Inspiration added to hit: 1d6 ⇒ 2
(Total of 19 to hit Knight's AC)

Radiance Damage with Smite (level 1 spell sacrifice): 1d8 + 6 + 2d8 ⇒ (8) + 6 + (1, 6) = 21

Between Hallvardr's Inspiration and Roscoe's distraction, Damon's mighty swing slid past the false knight's defenses and drove deep into his torso, holy flame spilling out of the wound as the paladin's smite devastated the foe!

(If he counts as a fiend, add another 1d8 radiant damage.)

@Fabian, How do you see the Lucky feat working with Advantage/ Disadvantage? Could I roll a third die then pick which two I wanted to use?

I think the idea is that you can't have advantage or disadvantage from different sources (i.e., they don't stack) so let's say that you can use it to cancel disadvantage but don't use it if you already have advantage.

Questions?

Okay I can run with that. Wasn't sure if it would something like the "Super Advantage" you get with feats like Elven Accuracy but your version makes sense.

Stella kneeled as she grasped her leg in pain where the thug's sword had cut into her. Her eyes watering, she at first made a poor attempt at hitting the enemy with her conjured flame before rising and shouting "Back off!" as she shot a bolt of starlight at point blank range. Managing to hit him in the chest once again, she hoped it was enough to take him down once and for all.

Kokam winced as the thug scored two more hits on her, This one is fast, I need to end this... she thought, drawing upon her now replenished well of energy and striking out at her enemy...

using 1 ki for extra bonus open hand attack...

Attack spear , one-handed: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Attack openhanded bonus: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22

Attack openhanded bonus bonus: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Open Hand Technique, thug needs to make DC12 Dex save or be knocked prone....twice , if he's not dead that is :)

The thug easily avoided the thrust of Kokam's spear, but her the power in her punch to his chest sends him backwards. Likewise, her sweeping kick to his legs , while painful, also sends him tottering...

OOC: Actually what I forgot is to tell you is my reasoning for not bothering with the DEX saves.

Being prone and right next to you means nothing with regards to mechanical disadvantages. Standing up takes 1/2 your movement and does NOT incur opportunity attacks so it was a mute point whether the thug was prone or not.

Can you guys think when this would come into play?

Silver Crusade

Male Half-Elven Paladin 5 | AC 20 | 44 HP | Str: +3, Dex: +0, Con: +2, Int: +0, Wis:+3, Cha: +7 | Initiative +0, Perception +3, Stealth +0 (Disadvantage)

Being prone gives you disadvantage on attacks and gives adjacent enemies advantage on attacks. So, any AOO he makes while prone would be at disadvantage and any attack against him before he gets to stand up on his turn would have advantage.

(At least Damon didn't use up the smite then--it only activates on a hit.)

Thanking the Inheritor that the fallen crusader had yet to bludgeon him, Damon was nonetheless frustrated that his own attack was blocked. Striking again with the same maneuver, Damon suddenly stopped and reversed his swing, redoubling its velocity and and striking at the foe's unshielded shoulder!

Though her last blast had not finished off the tiefling as she had hoped, she'd clearly wounded him enough to where she could easily read and dodge his telegraphed strikes. OOC: Yes and I considered that but you were the last to hit (before he got up) and you hit with your last two strikes anyway.

It really didn't matter this last round, but I will take it in consideration for subsequent rounds, mainly the fact that he could be attacked while still down.

Everyone: stop complaining about the dice roller. I pay good money for it. :)

Seriously, I have been trying to hit Damon for the past three rounds so the knight can gloat a little but have had no luck. :)

I intend to recap later today.

OOC : Hmmm, so I guess I'll have to live with the fact that while Kokam may put someone on their butt, she'll never get to attack them down there unless they decide to stay there.

But , our format makes this problematic.

Kokam hits with her Flurry, and attempts to knock an opponent prone, they have to roll a save, but we won't know the result of that until the next update...so no one else will know whether they can attack that round with advantage until then, but what if you also post the enemies' saves, that way in case like this we can roll the save? Just an idea....

/OOC

Kokam merely smiles at the thug's insult, "Iomedae watches over me, scum...what does your lord do?", then she strikes...

Attack=spear, onehanded: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Attack=open hand, bonus: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

..her spear striking his side, sending a spray of blood through the air. Spinning around, the back of her fist strikes the thug's jaw, snapping his head to the side...

OOC: No, you will be able to take advantage if he's prone (i.e., attack with advantage). I didn't roll for you last time because both attacks had already hit anyways. On hindsight, I should have rolled because you may have scored a critical hit. My bad. :(

Feel free to attack with advantage in case the foe does fail his DEX save. Lots of people do that, attack with advantage assuming flanking for example. I'll correct things as needed. I rather not have you guys roll for enemies.

And don't forget that there are unforeseen things that could happen like the knight parrying Damon's attack last round.

BTW: Hallvardr gave you bardic inspiration in case you want to use it.

@Stella: was your second roll your 'star attack'? Did you attack with flames twice with the lucky feat and forgot about your star attack?

Sorry forgot to change the text for the second attack roll; that was for the Bonus Action "Star Attack" so Stella whiffed completely this round. I didn't use Lucky this time around as I hoped someone might kill it if I missed and I wanted to save a couple uses in case we have more battles in the city before our next long rest.

Stella was once again able to read the the movements of the thug as he flailed about in desperation, trying to hit anything in sight. Asking Desna to help her finish him off once and for all, she attacked him one more time with her magical flames. Though he managed to dodge her first attack, her second blast hit true and struck him once again in the chest. This time though, instead of absorbing the hit, the blast of star fire actually shot straight through him, leaving a small hole where his heart once was. Looking down at the spot was all he was able to muster before falling to the ground lifeless.

Once he was down, Stella turned to heal the fallen monk but was happy to see that she was already back on her feet. Knowing that she could handle herself for the time being, Stella then began to make her way over to the group of hostages at the back of the room, making sure to stay out the way of Damon's fight.

Kokam felt the blow to her middle as if it were happening to someone else. As darkness narrowed her vision , she could see the gloating tiefling's mouth moving, but the ringing in her ears made his words unintelligble.

She felt the ground greet her roughly, thinking How did he best me? He's demon worshipping scum....Elder would be so disappointed...

Then her vision cleared suddenly, as the familiar rush of Roscoe's healing hit her in the stomach, as if she'd just downed a large flagon of ale, the tingling warmth spreading out to her injuries, knitting them, soothing them.

Kokam sat up in time to see the thug who'd beat her down get burned to death by Roscoe's flame, "Good, back to the fiery pit for you!" she muttered, then gasped as another wave of healing hit her, this time as if a bucket of freezing water has been thrown at her...no comfort, just cool, intense burning sensation where the magic healed some more of her wounds. "Hmmm, Stormbrow's magic, I think!" Kokam thought with a smile.

The proximate threat eliminated, Kokam got herself to her feet, then saw that Damon still fought the leader.

Leaving her spear for now, Kokam leapt to assist her friend, drawing upon her inner power to fuel her attacks...

I'm going to go move ahead to actions after the fight as it looks like either Damon or Kokam finished off the Baddie

Medicine: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Making her way over to the group of survivors just as her comrades defeated the final foe, Stella said to the group,"Everything's going to be alright, we're here to help. Are any of you injured?" Stella will then take out a knife and cut free the former hostages while waiting for the others to join her so they can question the group together.

@Kokam, Hal's Bardic Inspiration can now also be added to damage rolls or your AC since he's now a Valor Bard :)

FYI: I'm going away for the weekend so my time will be limited. Don't be alarmed if you don't hear from me until Sunday evening.

Yes, two attacks per round made him very dangerous. ‘I get by with a little help from my friends.’

Reaching out to Kokam, Damon said, ”I am glad we survived—I’ll have your back any time.”. When he touched her, healing power flowed through his touch as divine healing power flowed into the injured monk.

Cure Wounds: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Turning to the body of the fallen crusader, Damon picked up the shield with Iomedae’s holy symbol emblazoned on it and sighed at the senseless waste. He tried to clean the grime, symbolically cleansing the shield. He also searched the body for any items that may be of value or use in their ongoing struggle against the demons.

Investigation: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (8) + 0 = 8

Roscoe called back to Aravashnial, "Well I hope we found some of your friends. Its safe to say this isn't a safe location."

Aravashnial is the blind guy I think.

Roscoe moves outside and guides the wizard in to the ruin. "Its quite the carnage. It is good not to see. Thankfully it is mostly foes. Though the site is damaged."

Kokam moves toward the evil knight, in her mind seeing what she must do, her fists heavy with that inner power that had recently welled up within her.

But, when Damon all but cuts the head from their adversary, she takes a single step, then lets the energy drain away, smiling at Damon, "That was well struck! "

Then as he approached, nodded and answered in kind, "I too will have you back, Damon!". When he touched her and passes his healing into her, her eyes closed for a moment. The feeling was similar to Roscoe's healing, warm and comforting, a feeling she thought for a moment what it might feel had Damon embraced her....

Her eyes flew open at that thought, her cheeks flaring with embarrassment, and after a stammered thank you , Kokam went to help Stella with the prisoners...

Perhaps we can gather in the library and deal with the books, find out what is going on with the Riftwardens, and take a short rest if it looks safe enough? Damon could use some bandaging up, a song of rest + a HD, then could top up anyone a few HP down still with his Lay on Hands ability.

If we choose to take a short rest:

Spend 1 HD: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

A short rest works for me. I could also heal people a decent amount as well with one spell if anyone needs topping off (using Healing Spirit for 3d6 healing and I can shift to the healing star form for an extra 1d8+1)

Valor bards can use it to add damage... Combat Inspiration - Also at 3rd level, you learn to inspire others in battle. A creature that has a Bardic Inspiration die from you can roll that die and add the number rolled to a weapon damage roll it just made. Alternatively, when an attack roll is made against the creature, it can use its reaction to roll the Bardic Inspiration die and add the number rolled to its AC against that attack, after seeing the roll but before knowing whether it hits or misses.

Least the wizards could do is let us rest up a bit, it seems, waiting for someone to bring in Aravashnial, and sees Roscoe do just that...

"Aravashnial, I worry this is not the homecoming you wished for, but hopefully you can salvage some of your work from the remaining tomes," said Damon as the elf wizard got settled in with his librarian friends. "Do you plan to stay here, or do you want to travel on with us after we recover?" he adds.

(Hallvardr, do you have a song of healing for us? Damon may top people up on hp with Lay on Hands once we all rest & spend hit dice.)

Speaking with the others, he asked, "What should we do next? Anevia, do you still want to go to Irabeth's home to see if she is still there?"

I had accidentally posted this in the gameplay. Saddly I did not have the option to edit or delete.

Roscoe looks around, "Not sure anyplace in the city is defensible. This place is a target and now there are forces on mission who won't return." He points to the fallen foes. "We need to rest. Do we risk it here?"

Short Rest seems like a good plan even if we don't pull a long one.

Action #2

"I'm glad that we were able to find some of your friends Aravashnial." Then turning to the entire group of Riftwardens, Stella asked "Also could you let us know what you were researching before the attack? Maybe it could help us while we're in the city."

I'll save Kokam's hit dice for now...
Action 1

Kokam rests a hand on Anevia's shoulder, "We promised we'd see everyone home , and that's what I intend to do, not matter how long it takes..."

During their brief rest, Kokam listens to Hallvardr's song with delight. The Kellid have similar songs, with similar melodies, so the music brought back fond memories. She claps and actually sings along a few times, thoroughly enjoying the lightening of the mood.
